The Flights of Fancy page is still running of Hypermart's old server, they haven't fixed the problem on the new server yet.

I have tried trying to retrieve the week of lost posts, by going into their file manager system, which is connected to the new server, but that page is empty, so I'm presuming it was lost in the crash.

No word on when normality will be restored, so I'm backing up FOF every day.

If you are having problems accessing the page, it may be that your internet service provider serves frequently requested websites from their own cached files. The could have done this while the page was down, hence the problem accessing it. I'm not sure how to get around this problem.

If you have problems with the website, please contact me, rather than Suzanne at the moment, as she seems to be out of e-mail contact. Thanks all for your patience!

I may watch The Two Towers again today if I have some time - just to take another look At DW. (I may balance it with a little "Mesmer") I'm not accustomed to fancying other actors, most of the "film hunks" might as well not be there. Although I miss Fabio terribly - he was so funny. So it's Alan Rickman, David Wenham, and I do like Mel Gibson in "Bounty" - the shirtlessness, combined with the long hair - wow. He's not aging well, though and since "Braveheart" I haven't been thrilled. I liked Jason Issacs in "The Patriot" he's like AR's evil twin.
I read "Cold Mountain" a few years ago and cannot see Rene Zellwinger anywhere in it although I think I know the role she will be playing, and I agree, you couldn't find a more American book.

Loesje, thanks for posting in Dutch! I tried to teach myself the language some years ago and am thrilled that I understood you. I think you said that you think Stezi's website is one of the best you've ever seen and that you're jealous that she's seen and spoken to Alan. I don't know what weggelegd means, but are you saying that you don't think you'll be able to do the same because you're afraid to fly? But that maybe you'll go to London on the train and you ask Stezi to keep you updated as to when Alan will be appearing again? Does op prijs stellen mean to appreciate? Sorry this is so off topic, but I got excited.

I can't get on Internet Explorer either.(The page will not display.) I'm on AOL. How about you, ACC? I tried Reload. I tried Control + Reload. I tried F5. I tried Control + F5. Nothing. Nada. Zippity-doo-dah.

I don't have a new computer to blame it on, so something is going on. Is anyone else getting a blank page at FoF, or is it just me and ACC? Please speak up so we can try to figure this out. Is this an AOL problem? I have never had a problem getting to FoF before the last few days.

There is no problem with FOF . those with slower connections or who still cannot access, force a page reload:

Hold down the control (Ctrl) button on your keyboard (Option key on Macintosh) while clicking on the Refresh button on your IE toolbar. This will reload the entire page, capturing the most recent file.

Chandra: I am a member of a yahoo group devoted to AR/Snape. One of the recent discussion that popped up on our list was who would make a suitable Remus Lupin besides David Thewlis. David Wenham's name came up a few times. It seems you are not alone in your admiration. I for one find him quite lovely. A beautiful nose. Not as impressive as AR's but admirable nonetheless.

Hi all, Thanks for the fantastic links to Love Actually. I'll have to get a babysitter for the evening when this comes out! In our small town big things are happening here too at the PGA golf Tournament with Tiger Woods and more celebrities. I read that Michael Eisner from Disney was playing there today too! We take rides by the place to see if we can find anyone "Famous". Wonder if Alan plays golf?? Now that would be a great story! As if this isnt enough, we also have Jimmy Buffet at the Tweeter Center next door and all the parrot heads are hanging out at the McDonalds pakring lot with all the fun cool beach stuff on their vehicles..Come Sunday night, we will just be a nobody town again and back to school next week! I see that Anthony Minghella has penned the screenplay for the movie "Cold Mountain," currently in post production. Set during the American Civil War, it's starring Jude Law (I can never figure out why Hollywood uses American actors to portray English characters, and vice versa. The character of Inman is distictively American. Or perhaps it's being shot by an English film studio? Didn't research it closely enough). Anyway, it also stars Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger.

I highly recommend the novel for those of you so inclined for a good read. I read it some years ago and was truly impressed. Like TMD, a rather bittersweet ending. Possibly a movie to look forward to.

Could someone in charge please tell me why the "yam" posts from a poster named Whipped or Mashed? -- who is not me and I'm not sure who it was -- and my answer to that person disappeared last night? Was it a server glitch, or were they really removed for sexual explicitness, as BTW states? Because they were not sexually explicit. And can you tell me why the Sonoma post to me about something completely different -- a thank you for answering an AR-related question -- is gone as well? As is my brief, completely innocent acknowledgement of Sonoma's well wishes?

Everyone is so much cleverer that I! Carole, any ideas how to get that job of wiping his brow? And yes, many of us AR fans noted David Wenham in Two Towers, his nose isn't as imposing, but there is a resemblance to AR that is marked.

I've been viewing the "Love Actually" trailer when I can get a break. I'm on a four-year old computer, with an older version of Quicktime. I've seen as far as Bill Nighy quipping "Britney Spears." I like it.

Question: the guy who plays Laura Linney's new love: is that Greg Wise? Or some guy who looks like Greg, with a great tan? :)

Alan has some great reaction shots. Must go: thunder in the air.

Apparently there is going to be a tribute to the late Richard Harris on 21st September at the Strand Theatre, London. Cast members are going to be present from the Harry Potter films, it being the last film that Richard Harris was really involved with........wonder if AR will attend/contribute, he often goes to these sorts of things? It's out of bounds to members of the public, according to the newspapers only close friends can attend.

"In the end, bad-guy actor Isaacs finally gets the girl" by Michael Kilian in "Chicago Tribune" August 28, 2003.

"'I was doing a Shakespeare workshop in London with Ian McKellan. I was debating whether or not to do ["Dragonheart"] and Ian at that point hadn't done films. He said, "Oh, God, if I could do it all over again, I'd bloody do films from the start. I'm flat broke. I'd just grab it, if I was you, love." And I did, and I've worked in films ever since.'

"He has followed a parade of great English actors who've come to the U.S. to make bucks as dastards, including Lord Laurence Olivier ('Marathon Man'), Alan Rickman ('Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves') and Jeremy Irons ('Die Hard With a Vengeance'). 'They're great parts,' Isaacs said. 'They're really the best parts. If you're lucky and you play it right and don't take too many of them, there's a longevity in it. Those poor romantic lead buggers. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to carry every film you're in. I get to come along and chew up the scenery.'"

[The interview discusses his appearances in "CSI: Miami", the new indie "Passionada", as well as the new version of "Peter Pan" (Isaacs is Capt. Hook/Mr. Darling) which is being released in December.]

Hi Sonoma. AR gives a nice throaty laugh at the end of the "Painting with Light" thing from Turner Classics. I think Tami's got it on her site. AR characters laughing? Hans at the end of "Die Hard," P.L. in bed with little missy in AABA, when she tells him she's getting the hang of it. TMD: Jamie under the piano after he and Nina sing, and also when he surprises her in the bathtub. Sinclair in CME, when he goes to drop off a letter to a business colleague and we hear them laughing in the office (also laughs in bed with incest girl when she asks him if he still loves her because it's "only" her). I know there are more, but I don't want to look too geeky here.

Kit, Martine McCutcheon played Tiffany who was married to Grant Mitchell (foolish girl!!). She regularly fell downstairs etc and finally met her fate outside the Queen Vic after being knocked down by Frank Butcher whilst running away from Grant one New years Eve!!!Not that I ever watched Eastenders !!LOL She must have left at least 5 years ago then had a couple of hit pop songs. Then to everyones surprise she was a huge hit in My fair Lady on stage, but only ever managed to work about 3 nights a week, due to illness and all sorts of things and dropped out after a few months. She was more or less pilloried in the press and everyone was amazed when she won an Olivier for the part. She has got a good singing voice and I guess this film will be her make or break in the movies.

Gial!! We always thought Maggie had the hots for Ronnie LOL(Maybe she was a little minx after all!!!)

I watch Eastenders, but don't know anyone's (except Dot, which is June something) real name. What character was Martine McCutchen? I've had company for 10 days and have had a lovely morning all by myself to catch up on the Guestbook. I think everyone in England needs to go out and stand on corners looking for AR. Sue, thanks so much for pointing us to that delicious, and crystal clear, trailer for Love Actually. Maybe my biases are showing, but I think the old geezers, Alan and Bill Nighy, are knocking the socks off the younger competition - well, I will except Colin Firth - in their brilliant facial reactions in those snippets of scenes.

And that little postscript featuring Hugh Grant and the portrait of Maggie Thatcher reminds me that at the time of the demise of the Soviet Empire it was rumoured that it was largely due to the fact that Gorbachev fancied Maggie, and vice versa. In some of the old news footage she looks quite flirtatious with him.

A question for everyone and possibly a nice thing to do for our favorite actor: Does AR has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? It is maintained by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. There are web sites about it. I could not find information on nominating people, however. But, in the past I have heard that stars have received their "star" because of fan nominations. They have several categories and AR qualifies for two of them -- theatre and motion pictures. He may not have an Oscar yet (although we all know he deserves one), but wouldn't it be nice to show him how much folks care by getting him nominated for the next year for a star? Does anyone want to pursue this and find out the process then get back to the rest of us? Just a thought.

From the UK Daily Telegraph today

Hugh Grant's romantic comedy will have No 10 in a spin By Michael Paterson (Filed: 27/08/2003)

It is a spin doctor's nightmare. A bachelor Prime Minister arrives at 10 Downing Street and falls in love on his first day with, of all people, the tea lady. Even worse, they are spotted together at a Christmas pageant.

This is the basis of one of the many plots in Love Actually, the next romantic comedy from the team behind Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Bridget Jones's Diary.

It promises to have many of the winning ingredients of previous productions from the Working Title stable and, on the team's previous form, the project, with a cast of major names, is likely to be an enormous box office success on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hugh Grant stars as the Prime Minister, with Martine McCutcheon, formerly of EastEnders as the tea lady who captures his heart. The twists and turns of their romance are interwoven with other characters in 10 separate stories of love in London which merge into the film's Christmas Eve climax.

The Prime Minister's sister Karen (played by Emma Thompson) is married to Harry (Alan Rickman), who is pursued by a German colleague (Heidi Makatsch).

Meanwhile, Colin Firth plays a jilted writer who moves to the south of France and falls in love with his Portuguese housekeeper. Andrew Lincoln (This Life, Teachers) is besotted with Keira Knightley (Bend It Like Beckham, Pirates of the Caribbean), who marries an unsuitable suitor.

Liam Neeson is devoted to his stepson, played by Grant's real cousin, Thomas Sangster. The two have their own issues with unrequited love. If this is not enough to satisfy star spotters, Billy Bob Thornton, the grizzled ex-husband of Angelina Jolie, has a cameo role as the US president.

Publicity material for the film, to be released on Nov 21, describes the many love affairs as "sometimes romantic, sometimes sad, sometimes stupid - all funny in their own way".

The film is the directorial debut of Richard Curtis, who has also written the script. His screenplays have gone a large way towards giving British screen comedy its best reputation since the heyday of the Ealing studios.

Four Weddings, made for £4 million, took £150 million worldwide, Notting Hill, made for £27 million, took £230 million, and Bridget Jones's Diary made for £18 million and took more than £100 million, according to the Internet Movie Database.

LOVE ACTUALLY PUBLICITY MACHINE churns into action ..

LONDON (Reuters) - Hugh Grant will play a charismatic, bachelor prime minister who falls in love with a tea-lady in a romantic comedy due for Christmas release, its makers say.

"Love Actually" reunites the team behind box office hits "Notting Hill" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and is the biggest Brit-flick hope in years.

Grant stars with Martine McCutcheon, little known outside Britain where she is famous for appearing in the top-rated soap EastEnders.

She is joined by Hollywood names such as Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson. Comic actor Rowan Atkinson, who plays the bungling Mr Bean, makes a cameo appearance.

Set in wintry London around Christmas, the film intertwines the premier`s unlikely love for the woman who makes the tea with nine other love stories.

Grant`s character has been compared to Tony Blair, the youngest premier since 1812, although its makers deny any deliberate comparison.

It was made by Working Title films and United International Pictures and is due for release on both sides of the Atlantic on November 21.

Newspapers are predicting it will be one of the biggest British hits in years, but it faces tough opposition at the box office from the latest Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings instalments.

Beth, the reason you didn't see a trailer for LA is cos that one is more or less the first one out yesterday. Doubtless they will be showing it at cinemas quite soon.
Here is latest US release info:
North American Release Update
And in what is possibly the strangest release pattern of the year, Richard Curtis's "Love Actually" will sneak in select major markets on November 8, then open on 150-175 screens on November 14, followed by a second round of sneak previews in 800 theatres of November 22 and a wide expansion release into 1800 theatres on November 26.

Sue - thanks for the Love Actually Trailer. Finally a good reason to look forward to November which can be a pretty dreary month. BTW Sue, it's none of my business and I feel weird asking but would you care to explain the "persuing Alan" comment and why Ali-Pat is ROFL? True Sandy, but then I don't think "Shut Up You Twit" is very medieaval , either LOL.
I was beginning to think no-one wanted to see the picture;)))))Here is the Love Actually Photo

Here is the story that went with the pix:
London Evening Standard 26th August HUE AND CRY
"A maze of love matches make up a movie that is set to be this year's smash hit. But the plot of romantic comedy Love Actually is not going to be the easiest to follow. Hugh Grant leads a cast that also includes Martine McCutcheon, Alan Rickman, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and Keira Knightley. And what a tangled web they weave-not surprising, when the film comes from the same team that produced Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary and Four Weddings And A Funeral. Grant plays a young, single prime minister. His love interest comes in the somewhat unlikely form of his tea lady, played by former EastEnders and My Fair Lady star McCutcheon (love match one). The prime minister has a sister, Karen-played by Emma Thompson-and she is married to Alan Rickman's character Harry to provide love match two. Harry is relentlessly pursued by an office temptress played by German beauty Heike Makatsch, which makes love match three. Firth plays a writer jilted by his love who moves to the south of France to start anew, only to land in the arms of his Portuguese housekeeper, played by Lucia Moniz (love match four). Liam Neeson's love-not the romantic variety this time-is for his stepson, played by rising star Thomas Sangster, who in real life is Hugh Grant's cousin. Confused? We're only halfway there. In the film, even young Sangster has a crush on the prettiest girl in the school. Neeson, by the way, also has a crush on Claudia Schiffer. One love match-or mismatch in this case-involves Keira Knightley's character Juliet, who marries Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Their wedding proves that the power of love can be as wild as a tornado. If Love Actually-directed by Richard Curtis and out in November-sounds like Notting Hill, Four Weddings, Sliding Doors and Bridget Jones all rolled into one, that's because it probably will be. But, if a formula works, why not stick with it?"

Stick your own paragraphs in!!

ML and Jeannou, Alan learned to ride a horse before he filmed Quigley Down Under, but his horse-riding scenes were all cut before the film was released.

Continuing on my leisurely stroll through the AR films in alpha order, I watched the new DVD of RHPOT last night with the second audio commentary (Pen Densham, John Watson, Morgan Freeman, and Christian Slater) and learned many more interesting things about the film. Most interesting for the readers of this page is that apparently Ruby Wax supplied one of the Sheriff's most famous lines ("And bring a friend!). I know about Peter Barnes's input on the Sheriff's dialog, but I had never before heard about input from Ruby Wax. Still, makes sense.

More interesting things (at least to me). In the waterfall scene where Robin meets Little John, they were both wearing wetsuits under their costumes because the water was freezing. Also, this movie was blessed with excellent riders--Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, and Michael (oops--forgot his name but he played Guy) are all accomplished riders and did all of their own riding. They also comment on Alan's riding lessons for Quigley and in general give him kudos and laughs every time he appears on the screen.

Finally, here's a quiz to get your brain in gear for the week. In which two films does Alan's character utter the phrase, "No doubt..."?

Oh, joy, the AR guestbook still exists. Sorry, 'been on another planet for a few years, Hi-ee! (Only kept up with the News Page, just in case.) Glad to see the latest post is about Congo. You're quite right to worry: Congo, alas, does not have the second largest reserve of oil in the world and does not lie in a particularly world-domination strategic position either. The chances of a Superman (GW and Blair with their underpants over their pants) à-la-B52 rescue are slim. Well, come to think of it, there's a silver lining to every underpant, hey? ;) The world doesn't want yet another breeding ground for terrorists. Maybe the UN will be allowed to do its job there. Yes, please, give, give, give. OK, politics over! (says she as Suzanne chases her off the GB waving a rolling pin;)

Anyway, what I was really logging on to say was... I was watching the Arena programme on BBC2 right now, in celebration of Richard Attenborough's 80th and they went to RADA where he showed off his name on a Silver Medal board. The camera wandered and focused on two other names: Kenneth Brannagh and... ta daaaa, Alan Rickman. Couldn't see if the board was a gold, silver or bronze medal one (they had one for each medal) or what the award actually was, but the year was 1974.

And while I'm here, I thought I'd mention that if you want to know what's going on outside ze man's front door on this hot, stuffy and humid weekend in London, go have a look at the Notting Hill Festival report on the Notting Hill Carnival Site . No, I didn't think this would work... Try: http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/carnival/ :)

I beleive he rides just well enough to "fake it" for the camera lens. That is why we see him preparing to mount the horse, the camera cutting away, and next he is actually on the horse. It takes time and dedication to master the grace of a proper mount and dismount.

Re the Congo: I work in a suburb that is full of Congolese immigrants and refugees, to the extent that European French now sounds strange to my ears. I've found them as a group to be polite, serious, friendly and very interested in theology. To realise, reading newspapers, and watching TV, what these guys are refugees *from* is a shock. Re the photo of AR: does anyone know if our favourite Englishman can ride? I know he rides in Robin Hood, and in Sense & Sensibility, but those stunt horses are so well trained it's impossible to tell if he's actually riding, or just sitting.

OT. Most people are aware that Alan Rickman and his partner are very interested and involved in protecting human rights and helping the working class. For this reason I ask you, and I can only guess that he would do the same- to sign a petition which could in some way help the people of the democratic republic of the congo. The situation is serious and if AR fans aren't up to doing even the smallest things that could affect others' lives, I don't know who would. Sorry for posting something this off-topic (doubt i'll ever do it again), but some voices in one's head cannot be easily dealt with. re DIE HARD- I believe that in one of his interviews of the time that Mr. Rickman discussed his knee injury-happened the first day of shooting, if I recall, on the set of the roof scene where he has to climb around the roof with the steam vents? -checking the wires...he also said that he got the part because he was "cheap" and undoubtedly anxious to prove himself, which would explain the twenty foot fall, wouldn't it. Also he showed up at film festivals back then too. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to show up at the Toronto film festival. Most of them seem to skip such things anymore, don't they? BTW, accolades to Tony Shahloub for "Monk". If you haven't seen it, he's fantastic....

Remember, Angel, when you rent the DVD, to watch the text commentary - that's where they talk about the fall. It's fun - Alan also gets lots of quotes. It's fun because you can watch the movie and read the comments at the same time. He injured his knee in the fall? Didn't he also injure himself in AABA on the motorbike? (how do you know this?)

This is my first time here but please tone it down a little. After reading this, I am going to the Video Store tomorrow morning and try to find the special DVD edition of Die Hard. I really want to see the interview where it explains the making of the film and how he had to jump and land on the mattress. On my trip to London last year, I actually got to meet him and his lovely companion. They look so happy together and make an ideal couple. Keep up the good work on the GB and please try to keep it to AR related subjects. Thanks

About the FoF page, would somebody kindly please delete the post about Joan's posts being unwelcome, I did not post it BtW.

I always thought AR's expression when falling out the window in "Die Hard", was not quite right. Real emotions don't always register what the script calls for. Nowadays, I doubt they'd do it, insurance costs are soaring. Poor Alan, in this movie he also injured his knee in a fall...better let the expert stunt people do it, Alan honey.

Actually, if you rent the Die Hard Special Edition DVD, the director in the "text commentary" explains how they dropped AR from the building. I will try and remember what he said... They had him drop from some sort of crane, with a bungee cord, and he landed on a big air mattress, like you said. They told AR on the first take that he would hear "One, two, three, ok!" and he would be dropped when they said, "Ok!" However, the director secretly told the crew to drop him on "three" instead, and AR was genuinely surprised. They shot it a couple times, but this is the take they used.

In my mind's eye I can see Alan in his school play raising his little arms up and acting. When my kids were little they were so into acting on stage in front of all the moms and dads, wearing costumes and having scenery all around them. There was a lot of jubilant arm waving and dancing even when it wasn't in the script. Those were sweet times.
In high school I had a totally unenlightened English teacher who pushed her students ("for your own good!") into her plays - Shakespeare no less. Despite the pleading and the rash spreading on both my arms, I was expected to "perform". What a nightmare! I don't understand the absolute terror that comes over me at the thought of performing and wonder how anyone manages to do this kind of thing for a living. Anyway, I'm glad they do, and am especially glad Alan doesn't let a little stage fright get him down.

Sonoma. in my copy of DH there's a little book that explains how Hans made his fall, it say's; Rickman made a fall of about 19 feet in a huge blue aircushion on the stage from Fox. At the beginning of the shot he was very nearby the cameralens , then he'd let go and fell on the cushion . He did the stunt 5 times in spite of his backproblems, perhaps that was the reason why he had that real fear on his face.i.ve never heard of letting him fall at the count of 1, that would be very dangerous indeed

Jeannou, I saw a "pop-up" version of Die Hard once (during the movie they give interesting little notes about it) and it said that for the scene where Hans falls, they told Rickman they would drop him on the count of 3, but then dropped him on the count of 1, so they could get a genuine fear response. I don't know if it's true, but if it is, I think that was dangerous. I don't remember how far he was dropped, but if he panicked he could have tensed up and been injured!

Please let us show respect for those suffering from mental illness or are struggling with a emotional disorder.

For all we know, AR could be a very anxious person and suffers from stage fright, I'm sure some of his friends do during these stressful times.

Labels like "crazy, moron, idiot, retard, nuts," can not give any of us support, those who actually have these problems, as well as those those love and care for them. Some of these people you would never suspect the agony they go through, and some have yet to be helped due to the prejudice. They too, are part of the community. Thank you for your consideration.

Regarding what loesje wrote about difficulties being in public, I have found that science fiction conventions are a great place for people to get together without being judged by other people. One isn't made fun of because of appearance (or even slightly eccentric behavior). I'm sure there are many similar clubs of all sorts (especially religious organizations) that will have no trouble welcoming you. Of course, you may be sick of explaining and waiting for people to adjust. But I find, as one gets older, one starts caring a bit less about what people think. I suppose I'll become another self-absorbed senior (just let me tell you about my operation....) Interestingly, I was struck once by something actress Barbara Hershey of all people (David Carradine's old friend) said about shyness in an interview, that it is a form of selfishness. And it is true that I tend to go to a gathering thinking about whether I'm dressed okay, acting okay, etc. instead of thinking about the interesting people I can meet, perhaps help. Food for thought. A fan site for Colin Firth confirms Georgiana's note that Love Actually will screen at TIFF on Sept. 7 - sadly, I will still be away so will have to wait till the release. Rather odd timings, according to the same website.

'And in what is possibly the strangest release pattern of the year, Richard Curtis's "Love Actually" will sneak in select major markets on November 8, then open on 150-175 screens on November 14, followed by a second round of sneak previews in 800 theatres of November 22 and a wide expansion release into 1800 theatres on November 26.' Remember the scene: Colonel Brandon sits with Marianne reading her poetry in the manner she cherished. All is well.

I just can't get excited about the usual crop of 'so called' heartthrobs.Cruise, Costner, Bloom etc....That's why i love this guestbook, like-minded people, who have what i call taste ie. liking Alan Rickman. When i compare the above names to AR they seem dull. They are shorter in height, have monotonous voices in comparison, and do not make for compelling viewing. I simply cannot move on from admiring AR whilst no-one better is coming along.

You can access a trailer for "Love Actually" from the IMDB movie site. It links to Kineapolis ".be"--which I assume is a Belgian site. The trailer has lots of Colin Firth (kissing nearly everybody), a good bit of Hugh grant, brief glimpses of Mr. Rickman and Ms. Thompson, and I have no idea who that person in purple is behind the 'no entry' doors.

To FastFilm: Yes, I do know that the Santa Barbara County, where I reside, has been a popular area for shooting films. The Santa Maria Airport area to the North has been used for 'The Rocketeer' (1991) and 'The Spirit of Saint Louis' (1957). The new Tobey Maguire movie, 'Sea Biscuit,' was filmed in Los Olivos, to our East.
The pronouncement of the "oc" in Lompoc is that in "poke" (note: the common tourist mispronouncement of "Lom-pock" and teenage disrespect of "Lom-puke" are wrong and really get on my nerves!). Then, in Lompocian, the "i" has an "e" sound. I have also lived for a short time in Irvine. That is pronounced "Er-vine", and Irvinian as "Er-vin-e-an". Anything else that I can help out with, just let me know.

Hi I've just found this in my net travels and was wondering what people here thought of it, or if you even knew that it existed? It's an abstract of a paper that was presented at the 4th Popular European Cinema Conference: Methods and Stars, Stockholm 11 - 13 July 2003. ‘I touched Alan!’: The Role of Touch in Female Fans’ Reception of Male Stars One of the ubiquitous images capturing the phenomenon of stardom is a male star surrounded by a myriad of outstretched arms of female fans wanting to touch him. It is surprising that this aspect has never been systematically addressed in analyses of stardom. In my paper, I would like to deal with the role of touch in female fans’ reception of male stars, using British cult-star Alan Rickman and one of his Internet fan groups, the Rickmaniacs, as an example. The special importance of touch in human interaction for women has been examined from a variety of perspectives, e.g. psychoanalysis (Luce Irigaray), semantics of body language (Nancy Henley), sociobiology (Money and Ehrhardt). These frameworks help us understand how female fans react to the fact that touch is usually denied in the parasocial interaction with their favourite stars. Sight and touch are not antithetically opposed as male and female ways of perceiving the world. Women enjoy looking just as much as men, but their looking is of a different character. Mainstream movies, whether from Hollywood or from Europe, rarely cater to female ways of looking. Metz’s and Mulvey’s theories of cinematic reception are critically re-examined, using empirical studies from the social sciences on gender differences in the reaction to erotic images. It is explored how female fans compensate for the lack of haptic experience of stars with their fan activities, such as fantasising, creating fan art, writing fan fiction, talking with other fans. For example, female fans’ verbal descriptions of Alan Rickman frequently use words related to touch. Fan fiction, from romantic to explicitly pornographic, elaborates and re-writes Alan Rickman’s roles, in which - in accordance with the Hollywood stereotype of the English character actor -, he usually plays the asexual villain instead of the romantic leading man. The rare moments in which fans actually do get to touch their favourite star are analysed. Alan Rickman’s recent stage appearance in Noel Coward’s play Private Lives is used as an example. Fans experienced London’s West End production as much more intimate than the Broadway production. Thus, while there is necessarily always a distance between star and audience, this distance is variable. Ligensa Annemone Dept of Theatre, Film and Television Studies University of Cologne; Germany ligensa@Smail.Uni-Koeln.de The original can be found at http://www.film.su.se/anita/l-p.html - just to prove that I'm not making this up. Has anyone read this, or participated in the research? I would have loved to have had a haptic experience with Alan Rickman when I met him in London last year, but I have the distinct feeling I would have ended up in the back of a police van! Yours in displacement of parasocial haptic desires, Liz

Kate, it was Ciaran Hinds (who has a vague resemblance to AR) who was in The Mayor of Casterbridge.

Pam--Blow Dry is one of my all time favorites, mainly because it is so full of sheer goofiness! And it is one of the handful of films which I always play clear through to the end of the credits. Hi, I watched Blow Dry for the first time this weekend and loved it! What a wonderful film and so funny too. I loved AR's feet at the end of the movie (Wont say what I mean in case not everyone has seen it!) The actor that played the part of his son did an extremly good job portraying his character and the story line was good as well and very touching. Over the weekend, we had an Elvis impersonator come to the Library and put on a performance. What a show-he arrived by limo and sang all the good Elvis songs, and threw the scarves to the audience etc. He sounded just like Elvis, especially when he sang the ballads. Thanks for the boggart picture also, it is quite amusing-can't wait to see him in the actual movie of POA... Good night all and take care, Pam

About the Boggart pic, if he's playing a completely diffenent character, for example, Snape's mother in this photo, it would be logical for him to be made up much more differently than Snape. They look like arthritic hands to me, not the usual smooth, silky AR hands. Well, show-biz is supposed to fool us. If it's Snape wearing women's clothing, it really does look like a fake pic. Snape's hands were not withery looking but AR's usual nice hands.

Love Actually is featured in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. Rickman is the "cheating" husband of Emma Thompson. Must be another of those middle aged man/young thing stories. EW reports that with 10 interconneting plots, no one had to work more then 10 days.

With the power outage now traced to Ohio,(Ali-Pat, were you surfing the net looking for AR links)Canada and NY can now stop blaming each other). Thanks for sharing the picture, I can always use a laugh! But, umm...(Umbridge-like cough), I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm not entirely certain that picture was real. Those don't look like Alan's hands (and this is from someone who has spent a good share of time staring in awe at his wonderful hands. But I digress). It looks to me like someone has taken that head from a picture, and pasted it on to another image. If you look at the head, it does look a bit disproportionate with the rest of the body. If it is fake, whoever did it was very skilled. But who knows, maybe it is real! Let's hope! Even so, it gives us a good preview, right? I'm with Ali, that scene will be hilarious.

Oh, and the director for GoF was recently confirmed. (Rubs hands eagerly) I can hardly wait to see Alan playing THAT Snape. But then again, I would be enraptured seeing Alan on screen as anyone because he would play them deliciously.

A million thanks for that photo, Kimberly! I have been living for that scene from POA (although I think we might have gotten a preview of it in Michael Collins).

What's this about TSFJG being out on video (ears prick up)? Is it true? Where? When? What format? (panting sightly). How much longer can this film languish "in the can", anyway? I mean, it was made two years ago--you'd think the producers might like to get some return on their investment by now.

I'm relieved that all our members in NYC and Toronto and other affected areas appear to have endured the blackout unharmed. I still ponder the fate of the folks sitting at the top of the roller coasters at Cedar Point amusement park, however...

Oh, Anne! Haagan-Daz in an emergency! The horror, the horror!

On another note, AR has contributed his name to a fundraising effort for the British Heart Foundation. If anyone wants to buy a celebrity quilt, you can place a bid for it in an on-line auction.

Magda - Relax, Canada's blaming New York right back - plenty of blame to go around, I'm sure.

I was without power for 26 hours exactly - nasty in this heat with no A/C, but it could have been worse. Some of my co-workers had to slog down 47 flights in the dark and then walk home. Last time the lights went out in NYC - summer '77 - my sister and I were in a train underground. I've carried a pocket flashlight ever since and always have batteries in the apartment. Wish I'd thought of sugar cookies. Had to settle for a pint of Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream instead - I couldn't just let it melt, could I?

ANNOUNCEMENT: I just found out that my HyperMart server is/was migrating accounts from one server to another and in the process, managed to "lose" my account, which is why FOF and the News pages aren't accepting new posts. But they are in the process of investigating the situation and will notify me again tomorrow, so I'll keep you all posted.

And I seem to be having a run of bad luck, for I also found out today that, although my e-mail (Suz@mail.usa.com) is working again, they have lost ALL of my messages from the past two years (including many I hasn't read yet)!! :-( So if you e-mailed me prior to two weeks ago and haven't received a reply, please send again.

Hope all you rickmaniacs in the blackout area are ok. I heard USA blames Canada and Canada blames USA... And some places are still in darkness... What could be the real cause? I wonder if we´ll know someday. I know hot weather is bad, but I was thinking, what if it had happened in winter, people stuck everywhere diying of cold... The posters to LA are nice, liked the first more. Just saw the trailer to "The Search for John Gissing", is the film as hilarious and strange as the trailer? Is it good? It's a pity Mr. Rickman doesn't do more comedies. Not that I'm sad to see him in other kind of movies!!

Actually, the blackout went all the into Canada, from Toronto to Ottawa and all of Eastern Ontario, which is most of the populated part of the province and holds approximately 6 million people. I had just got home and had it been 15 minutes earlier I would have been trapped underground in the subway and had to walk the lines with TTC employees with flashlights. It just came back on now and the first bit of news we heard was that NY is saying it's Ontario's fault. Thanks, George and Michael.

Hello,
I had a few minutes to spare and wanted to come and thank everyone for their nice condolences on the death of my brother in law. It was so nice and very appreciated. You guys are the best.
Also, to Mary from Easton-I inadvertenly gave you the wrong name of the video store in Norton. It's Massive Video not Hometown Video. Sorry about that.
Once again, many thanks and have a nice weekend. Maybe I'll have a chance to come back sometime next week and see what the latest news is for AR. Take care and all the best,

Hi everybody, I´ve just a question about AABA, because I watched the Video again and found out that there is one scene missing. There is one scene, which you can see on the back side of the Video, where P.L. is sitting behind Stella, arms around her and with this really big sweatshirt or pullover or whatever in a green colour.... The Video shows the scene with him besides her in bed, after they ...you know what I mean : ) ....the green pullover ,too. But only besides, not behind. And now I´m asking if it was possible that this scene isn´t in it anyway?! Or do I have a very cheap Video ? ; )

AR and Hackney Empire (re possible H&Q mention in October issue)- he attended the Centenery celebration back in March/ April 2001 and there was a big picture in Hello magazine with Tom Hollander.

Will look out the picture for CPP today

Can confirm nothing in the H&Q September issue except a mention (no picture) of his attendance at Hitchcock Blonde party - in a subsiduary magazine on best parties.

Sonoma, Mr. Rickman's radio work is wonderful. "Rope" is my personal favorite, and the speech you reference is superb--all moody and misty. All the actors in this BBC drama are quite fine. Unlike in the Hitchcock (it was his birthday yesterday) film, the character of the sister is eliminated from this version, with a number of minor additional changes as well. I know this piece so well as the BBC play, I was quite surprised to realize that it was actually based upon the University of Chicago murderers, Leopold and Loeb, of a 14 year old boy, "for the thrill of it.

I think it is a common thing in some British schools for people to wear robes over clothing, or at least it used to be! such as: Check out pictures (somewhere) from when Prince William was a Eton...robe over clothes. I love Galaxy Quest; it is a commentary on the silliness of Hollywood and the life of an actor as well as a send up of one of my fave shows (Star Trek, any version, but especially the original.).I heard on CNN that Mike Newell is already working on HP4, so they may already be filming!

I'm not sure whether I should be posting this or not, since I don't want to be the source of further disappointment, but I got a response from H&Q saying it would now be the October issue, Hackney Empire, whatever that means.

I read "Rope" by Patrick Hamilton last night. AR played poet Rupert Cadell in the BBC Radio adaptation back in the 80's. Cadell is an interesting character. I love the little speech he gives about five-and-twenty to eleven, "the hour when London asks why--when it wants to know what it's all about--when the tedium of activity and the folly of pleasure are equally transparent." Anyway, I really enjoyed it!

Lee, there were four years between "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" and "Tango at the End of Winter" as Mr. Rickman launched his film career. There were six years between his "Hamlet" and "Anthony and Cleopatra." He told me that, yes, there would be more live theatre in his future when I asked him at "Collateral Damage II" in March. But not immediately.

Sue
- Thursday, August 14th 2003 - 07:06:05 AM (Pacific Time)

It has occurred to me more than once, that Alan Rickman is overdue for a play. He has said in numerous interviews that he doesn’t like to stay away from the stage for too long a time as to keep stage fright and “muscles gone soft” at bay. I hope he hasn’t gotten comfortable with his film roles enough to think he doesn’t need to do stage work any longer, or he would rather not, or he cannot due to time constraints of his film work. I can imagine the longer one stays away, the easier it would be to not go back, and any play worthy of Alan would certainly run for a very long time. Maybe he likes the freedom that film work offers. It would be a shame if stage door Alan was a thing of the past.I guess it is anyone's guess at this point.

Fashion Police - When I first read the Potter books I imagined everyone in floor-length robes, the way wizards are traditionally pictured. Was surprised to see academic robes worn over trousers in the movie and think they might have been a concession to male actors who found it difficult to move around in longer robes. In Goblet of Fire, a wizard named Archie wears a woman's nightgown to the Quidditch World Cup because he likes "a nice breeze around [his] privates," which suggests that Rowling wasn't thinking trousers, either.

And I've seen at least, the DVD of Sense and sensibility... Just a problem with my nerves... I find absolutly unbearable to listen these audiocommentaries... is it possible to speak about "period ship" (or sheeps ? I don't remeber and I haven't got my dictionnary ?)with or without wool on their back when BRANDON is on screen ? It only gives me the furious desire to take the TV set and shaking it , barking "I DON'T CARE ABOUT SHIPS... tell me about him !"...no actually... this is my last audiocommentaries of a rickman's movie... until the next one of course !

Wise words Cynthia ! I could take them for myself too... but I've no time to tell you more sorry... I'm just not surprised to read that from you... there is always so much sensibility when you speak...or write.

Dick Clark maybe could pull it off but AR—No way. They will need a Tybalt type body. Has any one besides me often wondered why the young Snape was wearing robes over pants? Where on earth were his trousers? Think of what that must have looked like with skinny white legs sticking out of black robes with black socks and shoes beneath. I know even Snape would never do that.

I just discovered this web page -- very nicely done. I wanted to ask if anyone knows of what Mr. Rickman might be doing professionally next? I know he has a movie coming out in November and I saw the information about the next Potter film beginning to film in April of next year, but, given that actors book well in advance -- is he currently filming or on stage before April?

Second (and last question) -- does anyone know why he did not do the film the Actors and was replaced with Michael Caine? The trade publications last year (Variety, etc.) all said that AR had signed to do the picture. Perhaps time commitment problems? All the best to everyone, Mary in Massachusetts

Of course, Mike Newell, to direct HP4, also directed my favorite Rickman film, "An Awfully Big Adventure." As Claire has suggested to me, let's hope he treats Snape as lovingly as he did P.L.

Hey Sonoma! If I remember correctly, you once said something to the effect that you'll never get to see Rickman in person. And, as I recall, I said something along the lines of "Oh, Sonoma, don't give up. Wonderful, surprising things happen every single day!" Have a fantastic voyage and prove me right, okay? lol

Alan Rickman would wish for his fans to actively enjoy and appreciate his work, to have a little fun with it if desired, and to remember him fondly when he is gone. He would not wish for anyone to use him as some sort of idol to worship everyday and fixate over. No one deserves that level of responsibility.
Going back to lurkdom now.

Sonoma--thanks for volunteering to "test the waters" while in London! I will provide a fishin' hat and an ole cane pole if it will help, but you have to dig your own bait. Hope the weather cools down a bit before you get there, or else those little fish will just hang around on the bottom of the pond and you'll never get a bite. Seriously--hope you have a wonderful trip and perhaps have a chance encounter with a certain velvet-voiced actor.

I'm finished with "self-improvement". No more women's magazines with long lists of contents on how to improve every aspect of life. No more TV commercial pointing out what is wrong with us and the product we must buy to "fix" it. Not even will I try to make myself a "better" person. It's working! I had to share this, it's freedom to see yourself and say, I'm fine, thank you!

Thanks for the wisdom about finding one's inner worth instead of seeking affirmation from someone else's value. when I make a comment, it gets lost for several hours, and doesn't make any sense, because the post referred to is a number of posts down the page. Someone posted awhile ago about the dream of Alan knowing them and feeling alive due to his recognition. Then I posted something depressing in response about how if you didn't get the feeling of being 'seen', valued and respected as a child, you look for it all your life but can never fill that emptiness. Recently I read the following, and it changed my mind about having to live with that empty feeling....."We have all given our power away to something and our lives have sucked for it. We have bestowed undue power to lovers, movie stars, gorgeous men and women etc. The list goes on. If you do not value who you are, you will seek to borrow worth from the outer world. You will look for validation from people whom you believe know or have more than you. But since everything you need is inside you and no one can know more about your path and purpose than you do, any power you ascribe to external people must explode in your face and leave you feeling worse than when you started. Unsucking your life is an inside job. You do not need to import power, for you were born with it; you just need to plug the holes in your bucket through which it is leaking. The quest is about peeling away the lies and illusions you have been told-and went on to tell yourself-that have kept you living smaller than you deserve. When you elevate others at your expense, nobody wins. When you source your life from inside out, everyone wins. Idols always fall on those who worship them. Yes, there are people who can help, support and teach you. No, there is no one out there who can save you." The rest is in the book, Why Your Life Sucks and What You Can Do About It, by Richard H. Cohen

CA: That last scene where AR is running, he had been on a motorbike without the wind/cold protection of his jump suit left hanging in his flat. He was wearing a business suit (brrrr!), that's probably why he was "running funny". Stiff from cold, not to mention wet paving, I'm sure it affected his sense of balance and that's why he eventually slipped.

I found this in the Leaky Cauldron:

Mike Newell Confirmed to Direct GoF

It's official (and just hitting the wires): Mike Newell is confirmed to direct Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The franchise's first British director, Newell directed the hit movies Four Weddings and a Funeral and Donnie Brasco. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is very tentatively scheduled for late 2005 - which would be a rush, considering when PoA is slated to debut.

I had an unexpected surprise on my travels today and wanted to share them with you. Upon arriving at the plaza for some mundane grocery shopping, I came upon tables of video tapes for sale in front of the local video store. I actually found Blow Dry for $3.00! As if this wasn't enough as I entered the store, a man impeccably dressed was standing there and resembled AR. My heart dropped even though I knew it coulnd't possibly be him in this small Northeast town! I wasn't the only woman giving him glances either!! (He must have been a manager or partner of the store). As if the day wasn't sunny enough!! It really brigthened up after that. SPOILER AABA: Please forgive a couple more comments. I played the volume extra loud so I could understand the accented English. At the end, after Stella walks away from the telephone booth, without showing where she went, I heard a distinct splash. I think it was her.

It's easier to re-read what a character has said while reading the book. The twists in the plot are also easier to verify while reading. In a movie, miss one piece of information and it could cause confusion and make the movie seem awful. With so much going on, we're so lucky to be able to rewind! In an interview, AR said in effect there are some stories that need to be told and that's one reason he makes his choices. Stories about the 20th century and what took place during those years. If I can find it, I tell you where to go to read it. Over and out!

Hi everyone, Just a quick note to say hello. We arrived home early this morning from our trip to the White Mountain area in New Hampshire. While the mountains are quite majestic looking, there is also a sadness whilst looking at what used to be the natural formation of the Old Man of the Mountain. To those of you not associated with New England, it was a natural rock formation that looked like a face perched atop the mountain that came crashing down this past spring. Thank goodness we were able to capture his image last year. One of my stops was a small shop where of all things, I spotted a Snape T-shirt and Snape Tote Bag!! What an unexpected delight. I obviously bought them both and will be using them in good measure. I didn't get a chance to listen to the Return of the Native tapes as my husband and son thought they were "boring"-so will listen myself and absorb them myself. Have a wonderful day everyone-the sun is shining and the sky is blue. Time to catch up on the many tasks I left behind before going on my trip. Take care and cheers, Pam

Okay, all you Rickman maniacs (of which, I admit, most humbly to be a member of such a group of intelligent people with EXCELLENT taste), I have a question. I'm not sure if it's been answered before...so, if it has, don't reply to the post, just privately email me so we don't tie up bandwidth with answering this... Some years ago, the Scottish rock group Texas made a video for their song "In Demand". I remembered seeing it once or twice on VH1 (back when they and MTV actually played music videos!) and I have found the streaming video for that wonderful piece of art on another web site. Does anyone know exactly what CD/DVD that video is on? If I knew the CD/DVD title, producer, etc. it would make finding it sooooo much easier. Thank you all so much for your help. Servina

Zel-Anne, that is an old COS photo of Snape. I remember it well!

Skeptic--I agree with everything you say about GC! I really do love that film, and I think he really got his props for that one. He is included in every single bit of publicity, along with Sigourney Weaver and Tim Allen. So often he is relegated to the background in all the publicity, but in the GQ publicity, he is everywhere. How nice! Wouldn't it be great if that were always true.

Also--Ciaran Hinds has been favorably compared with AR before, and I agree that there are similarities. Loved him in Persuasion (did I spell that right? Sunday morning fogginess...), and have enjoyed hearing him attempt to recreate AR's part in the BBC recorded version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

Okay, one more thing and I'll quit. Does anybody out there have a clue about something on a TV show (or series) called Arena that was about George Orwell? I have seen AR credited twice with appearing in this show, and I know nothing about it. Any clues, anyone?

While you feel free to be creative, silly and have fun, some people feel free to be crude, cruel, viscious and obscene. Things seem to have moved on (I only had 3 days off from reading the GB!), but I'm another lurker who really enjoyed GQ! One of the things I really liked about it was the way it allowed AR to (very gently) send himself up. Clearly he is an extremely successful actor (unlike the character he plays). But the film allows him to play up that whole 'British Actors/artists, American Actors/hacks' thing - eg sample dialogue (probably not accurate, because I'm quoting from memory) SPOILER As the Captain is attacked by rock monster, other crew members give advice on how to beat it Dr Lazarus: You need to work out what its motivation is ... Captain: It's a rock! It doesn't have any motivation !!! Dr Lazarus: That was always your problem. You were never serious about the craft. Of course it is much funnier when AR actually says it! There are lots of funny moments, but I think my favourite is the point where he is comforting the dying alien, and manages to infuse so much emotion into his formerly despised catch phrase ("By Grabthar's Hammer ...) that it almost makes me cry. What a great actor! BTW - I notice that a lot of people have commented on how AR 'should have been' cast as Mr Rochester in Jane Eyre. I'm not sure which version you are thinking of. I saw a made for TV version a couple of years back, with Ciarin Hinds as Mr Rochester, and I thought he did a fantastic job, and was pretty darn sexy as well. He's also great in the film version of Austen's 'Persuasion'. In fact, I think that in many ways he is like a slightly younger version of AR (eg talented Brit actor who's also really hot!) - if that's not totally blasphemous!

This ex-TART is now a CART - well, at least I didn't move to Fenelon Falls! And, of course, we had made arrangements to be away for part of the TIFF time period. So I will have to cross my fingers that 'Love Actually' plays during the latter part of the festival, or else I will just have to read the reviews from the lucky folk who made it.

One thing I'd note. I understand that the folks who control the distribution of films like to use the Toronto Film Festival to gage the possible success or otherwise of their product - apparently the TIFF audience are seen as very good prognosticators. So let's hope for very appreciative audiences in Toronto.

Chandra, ACC, I was writing fiction. The characters I made up and the movie characters...what they did at the Downtime Bar and what they said was pretend. What the Downtime Bar "Joan" did and what she said to other characters did not take place in real life. Someone mentioned Snape, so I added to the idea of what he was doing or saying. BTW I was never "in love" with any AR character. Some people do this, but not me. When I was using an AR characacter, I was writing from the characters' point-of-view. For example: Sheriff of Nottingham, a character NOT Alan Rickman, would say something lustful to a new comer, like Pam H. My "House Elffie" character was a hostess and welcomed people and said good night . Sometimes Les would include "House Elffie" or "Anxious House Elf" in her posts to keep her story going. ACC, if you came to DT Bar, I would have the Sheriff say something typical of what he would say to you.

Chandra, thank you for your considerate post. I hated how they picked on you weeks ago! I thought the poster behind "Snape" with the short circuit was a guy and that was creepy to me. I kept that idea going 'cause I didn't run out of things to say. However, when I'm accused of very serious disorders, the poster is accusing me of what the character is, obviously the Sheriff is a sadistic, power player and sexually disturbed. The constant complaining by some posters, was not in the spirit of fun, I believe. What I did was "hold up a mirror" of what they were doing by imitating them. Now people think I'm crazy and I am not. Don't borrow trouble, I (Joan), am quite healthy mentally, but the characters have the extreme behavior.

It's too tiresome to build a "house of cards" just to have a "bully" knock it down. It wouldnt make sense to keep at it. I don't want to write for people who simply don't appreciate my style. Thank you for your compliments, but you'll have alot of fun amoung yourselves, I just don't have the "toughness".
Joan

When one has freedom, then there is a possibility of license. While I appreciate Claudia's generosity in offering the Downtime Bar without any "policing", I miss her gentleness and respectful tone. Perhaps the banner to the Downtime Bar should be "abandon hope, all ye who enter here" Overall, I personally do not feel that it honors Mr. Rickman and I hope he doesn't access it or think that all of us are like that. I am talking about the "lowest common denominator" here, not the folks who just want to be frisky. All it take is a little bit of viciousness to taint the whole place....If you ever see my name there, then know it is not me.

I don't like the unauthorized book because it is badly written and tedious. Of course, I had access to good interviews and articles about Rickman thanks to Kel Clancy and Suzanne, and also had seen many of Rickman's movies, so I had an idea of his personna and his opinions of his work. The book didn't have anything of "him" in it-the closest thing was interviews by his friends. Maureen Patton had very little information to work with, so she attributed characteristics and motivations to him that she couldn't have known, and sometimes seemed to get him mixed up with his characters. That and the amateur psychoanalysis, and a few unkind comments, ie Ms Horton's smoking, which I thought were cheap shots turned me totally off on the book. The pictures were worth it, though. I also bought Ruby's book which I thought depressing -an ungodly childhood upbringng! Good pictures though.

None of the DoCs monitor that place or pull submissions. They'd never get their real-world work done, if they did!

Poor AR. Now I know why he doesn't read what the critics have to say. I wrote some things in the Downtime Bar (Flights of Fancy page). It's like giving someone a gift and they throw it back in your face. Pam H., I understand why you don't want to go back for a while!

Maybe being famous is like starring into a mirror for hours a day. I would be exhausted by all that atttention and love and praise given to me.

If anyone wants to know about the characters I made up or what they said, please ask. I could not distinguish from the posts what is considered "fun" and what is "no good". I have no idea what to write at the Downtime and I don't want to have so many people unhappy, I don't even know when I'm getting it right! Good night, God bless.

I am new to this site, so maybe I missed something. I have read the Rickman biography and I don't think it is so horrible. It's not very well written, but there is nothing in it that is damaging to his reputation, professional or personal. I don't know why he is so upset with it and why people here are so put out by it. Just my two cents.

Carolyn dear Carolyn, thanks for the web site information, I plan to visit ASAP. Rock on girlfriend!

Pam, Thanks you very much. Tell us the juicy bits in the book and do rent the Return of the Native tapes from the library, I am planning to listed to them again as I need a second go round to truly appreciate the nuances contained in Thomas Hardy’s writing. (Unlike CdC, who I’m sure got it all the first time) Alan is superb in this venue, and I am now in pursuit of Blind Corner. (Sadly, it is only six tapes long)

M.V., I loved Rasputin, when I rented it from the video store, I watched it three times in a row. Alan IS Rasputin. I read about the real Rasputin later, after watching and Alan surely became him in every way. What phenomenal acting, he suspended reality in the film for me.

Okay, here is the Toronto International Film Festival schedule information where Love Actually will have its premiere. Nothing at the moment but it will go up on August 19. The Festival runs from September 4 to September 13, 2003.

On a more disquieting note: previous PR bumpf about Love Actually indicated it was supposed to be a major 100-million-pound profit movie. Restricting its appearance to the top 25 movie markets and premiering it at a film festival doesn't sound like a vote of confidence to me.

Hi, I took your advice and called the Library. Guess what?? They have the book about AR and I am going up to get it later. Should be an interesting read, Ill let you know what I think. The tapes also came in of the Return of the Native and read by AR. These should be pretty good to and will make a nice listen to as we ( my family) are taking off for the mountains this weekend. I'll have to catch up on Lee'e story when I return..it's so good Lee and you are an excellent writer. The Library also accepted my Ginger Snape cookie recipe and is going to be published in their cookbook, isnt that great? What a wonderful day-enjoy it everyone-cheers for now...Pam

As to THE BOOK: I have both editions. I know he is unhappy about it. It is incredibly badly edited. It appears to be a series of articles written at different times and never edited for chronological consistency. The speculations she writes are entirely irritating. It is armchair psychiatric psychobabble. She misses key features in his films and draws factually wrong conclusions. However, there are quite a number of nice quotes about Mr. Rickman from people he knows and with whom he works. I assume, since she is actually a journalist (is she not?), that these are relatively reliable statements, and, for that reason, it is worth reading.

They are still flogging August issues of Harpers in Sainsburys today so I picked up HotDog instead as it had a pic of Bruce Willis in Die Hard on the front cover and a big *Movie Classic* Spread on Die Hard. There were the usual Hans pix but a large B&W one of all the Die Hard Baddies that I hadn't seen before. YES!!!!!!! Love Actually will Premiere at the Toronto Film Festival!!!!!!!!!!!

According to a number of news outlets today, including the Toronto Globe and Mail

"The 28th annual Toronto International Film Festival has announced five more Special Presentations today, and leading the list is the latest from the man behind Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill. Director/Screenwriter Richard Curtis helms an all-star cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, Keira Knightley, Martine McCutcheon and Rowan Atkinson in the Special Presentation of a work-in-progress, LOVE ACTUALLY - the ultimate romantic comedy that weaves together a spectacular number of love affairs into one amazing story."

Great news for the TARTS and anyone in driving distance of Toronto.

Pam H.--why don't you borrow a copy of the Paton biography from your local public (or academic, if you are permitted) library and read it before deciding to purchase it? If they do not have it, they will probably be able to get you a copy through interlibrary loan. Even if they can't get the newest edition, they should be able to get the original 1996 edition. The book is not particularly well written, and has several glaring errors, however it is still the largest single source of biographical information on AR, and is a fairly good chronicle of his early years on the stage. Plus the photos are interesting.

THE BOOK
I confess, I bought it, too. In a bout of Alan-nothingness, nothing new anyway, I thought, I'd at least have that one. but it turned out to be simply unreadable. At least to me. It is a made-up piece of all the interviews one can read at Claire's page and jumps through AR's life in a way that makes one dizzy. Plus, the way she draws conclusions out of thin air is not so much funny as it is enraging. It is a silly book, and rather unreadable. And I tend to get lost reading the phone book, mind.

Hi Sue! I always love to "hear" you in here, too (give her a hand, she's British!)! Hope all is well and you're surviving your heat wave - I feel a bit guilty because I think our absolutely beautiful Midwestern summer this year may be because you all ended up with the humid, steamy days. Not guilty enough to take them back, though....:-)

Quite seriously, I feel GQ is just about the most underrated of Himself's movies, framed as it is within the sci-fi and parody. But watch it again (like you're going to Pam. What a wise woman!) and it becomes very clearly a morality play, and a rather profound one at that. Each character seeks and eventually finds a personal redemption on this long, strange journey. If you can look through the inspired lunacy and get past the sci-fi angle (which is difficult for many people - what's up with that?), you'll find - or at least I did - an honestly moving story of the ghosts of regret that gather about you as you age, whispering of vanished youth and lost chances forever disappeared. About how the weary conviction of failure grinds you down and grinds you down, until you're diminished enough to fit into a tiny little box. And how the eyes of another, seeing greatness in us, may be enough to help us see it in ourselves. Only when you reach up for redemption can you find it reaching down for you.

Yes, I know I'm a bit bizarre about this (quelle surprise); but I find all this in GalaxyQuest. It's just that it's so funny and so completly the opposite of heavy-handed that I think the beautiful message is easily missed.

Well, now I've waxed poetic all over myself (and y'all) and I'm embarrased. So I shall return to my lurking like a toad in a garden hole, and not be heard from again for a while.......for a lo-o-o-o-ng while...................

Thanks for the continued appreciation of my site--visit often!

Mary from McHenry--I agree completely that GQ was a triumph for Alan in many, many ways. And I particularly agree with your reason #5 (yum).

Now I have a story of my own about the reaction of a spouse to an AR addiction.

I am lucky enough to have a co-worker and dear friend who is also a Rickmaniac. (In fact she is even crazier than I am, but that's for another day...) Anyway, her husband displayed amusement, then puzzled tolerance as her addiction grew, and when she announced to him that she and I were going to NYC to see Private Lives I think he actually felt a little bit betrayed, but he raised no protest. The trip went well and we had such a marvelous time that we agreed we simply had to come back and do it all over again. Only, how the heck was my friend going to tell her husband, she wondered. Once she could get away with, but TWICE? To make a long story a bit less long, hubby picked us up at the airport, made some polite conversation, then said, "You two have some 'splaining to do." Then he pointed to the back of the Jeep at two long, narrow boxes and said, "These were on the front porch this morning--one addressed to each of you." Inside each box was a dozen red roses, and attached to each box was a note (in hubby's handwriting) which read, "It was great having you at the performances! Looking forward to your next visit. Love, Alan." My friend and I looked at each other and said laughing, "how did he know?" It still makes me chuckle to remember it--my friend's husband was not only understanding, but psychic as well!

I'm emerging from my lurking to proudly stand with my sisters MV and Pam...or I guess it could be one sister and one brother...or maybe two brothers, one with an unfortunate name for a guy...

ANYWAY, I'm standing proudly with my non-gendered siblings to declare that GALAXYQUEST IS THE BEST MOVIE ALAN RICKMAN HAS MADE IN HIS CAREER! Yes, pipe down all of you; it is! Here are my reasons:

1. If you loved the original Star Trek this movie wins no matter what,
2.There's no terrible accent (Naaaawrlins, y'all?),
3. His character does not fall in love with other characters that have all the charm of a 3-legged newt, such as Kate Winslet, Norman Reedus or a very soggy Juliet Stevenson,
4. Alexander Dane makes what is actually a very profound, Ozian journey from neurosis and failure to victory, self-acceptance and friendship, and does so both humorously and beautifully,
5. What great biceps in that t-shirt!
6. He smiles and/or laughs in this movie more than any other,
7.He has at least as many quotable lines in this one as in Robin Hood, and probably more (I submit that "Oh right! Of course it's always about you, isn't it!" is as good or better than the "Cancel Christmas!"),
8. His reaction shots are priceless,
9. His co-stars are superb, and
Even wearing a badly-tailored jump suit and a lobster on his head, he STILL managed to look utterly sexy.

I could go on, but frankly, the truth here is self-evident. Oh, certainly there are elements of other movies that can set hearts a-swooning; Alan dueling, Alan crying, Alan naked, Alan carrying Kate Winslet without incurring a hernia, Alan in a cod-piece (possibly to help recover from carrying Kate...no, the timing wouldn't work...)Alan singing, Alan dancing, Alan walking on water, and so on and so on. But for the movie that works most consistently on every level throughout the entire length, the very best is GALAXYQUEST.

Pam H. Thanks. Someone over there thinks I have mulitiple personalities cause I have more than one character talking at the DT Bar. I grew up in a neighborhood that included many, many different people, all so unique. Languages, religions, race, economic class, etc. etc. And our parents were good examples of tolerance. Everybody counted. So, I find it easy to make up different characters and it's fun. I've been around many different styles of talking, too. The ridiculously heavily worded post was a snap to write because of a job I once had. But, I'm not too happy with descriptive writing, I'd rather show a picture. Dialog I love! And that is why, I go to the DT Bar, just to make comments. Anybody can do it!

Juliet writes: "Bit of a non-story in the Daily Record today (Scottish paper) about Prisoner of Azkaban film, www.dailyrecord.co.uk and follow story link, no mention of our man. I don't remember Harry and Hermione being chased by the werewolf through the forest in the book..."

::Spoilers:: Very end of the book, kinda happens twice. Once is when they come out of the Willow and the moon is out so Lupin transforms and they have to scurry as Lupin runs off into the forest. Next, well, it's the same "time" because of the time-turner, but they are sitting in the forest waiting and realize that they are in his direct path and they have to scurry again to make sure he doesn't see them. Hope that's right, it's my least favorite of the five books thus far, and I've only read it once.

Juliet-I am not sure, but maybe the scene they were referring to in POA is when everyone was coming out of the Whomping Willow entrance (with our dear Professors Head bobbing along and hitting into everything!-poor guy) and it was dark and Lupin turned back into the werewolf...Ill have to look through the book again but that is the only thing I can think of that they were referring to. Today, I brought my Ginger Snape cookie recipe to the Library where they are making up a special cookbook with recipes from books we have all read over the summer. Should be kind of cool to see it in a cookbook.. Have a good one everyone. I think Ill watch AR in Sense and sensibility tonight. Pam

I'm really enjoying this website! My hubby thinks that my newfound AR crush is WONDERFUL, since he gets the attention! Any fans of "Galaxy Quest"? In my youth, I was SUCH a fan of "Star Trek", and I went to see it for the satire, and I'm addicted because of Mr. Rickman! Malys

Bit of a non-story in the Daily Record today (Scottish paper) about Prisoner of Azkaban film, www.dailyrecord.co.uk and follow story link, no mention of our man. I don't remember Harry and Hermione being chased by the werewolf through the forest in the book, either the journo hasn't read it or Alphono Whats-is-face is taking "artistic" liberties. My present squeeze doesn't seem to mind my AR obsession (fellow Piscean, therefore dead sensitive and understanding) but my 12-year old son thinks I'm pathetic! Off on hols tomorrow until 25th Aug, going to the deep South (Isle of Wight), hope nothing exciting happens while I'm away.

Kate, I love Rasputin. I think it is his all round best production because so much of it is first rate: the cast, the writing, the direction, the sets, the costumes, and HIM. One of the things I admire about AR is his willingness and ability to be another person in a film. The character doesn't have to look, sound, and act just like AR as so many other "actors" seem to demand. He even plays bad guys, and as adorable as he is in those roles, they are bad guys! He deserved the awards he got for this film. Noreen, my guy is a little jealous, so I keep quiet a bit. However, lots have people have given me Snape stuff, and my DH tolerates my "shrine" near my computer. I put his pictures on my calender, too!

Oh what a relief to view the GB again. I really miss this place now that I can't access it at my local library. Terrified I miss something! Ali-Pat - love your website, I must have a look at some of your suggestions for AR roles in various books, they seemed very interesting. I agree that he should have played Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre, that would be worth crossing quite a few moors and mountain ranges for! Rochester is one of my all time favourites. Have finished HP&OotP now, really enjoyed it, but I don't think the Snape/Harry hatred thing has been fully explained yet. Maybe it'll all come out in Book 6. As to the "gay" thing - no I don't think he is, he's just one of those glorious men who just happens to be comfortable in female company and doesn't feel threatened at all (except perhaps, by "overheated" ones - CDC lol). Anyway off for my Rickman fix for the day with Die Hard on the telly - heaven!

To Noreen and “Ditto’s” to Carolyn dear Carolyn, I have noticed that many Alan Rickman fans have stable relationships. I have been married for twenty-three years. My husband is not jealous in the least and that’s a good thing. I think AR fans naturally know a good man when they see one and appreciate him when they have him. After all, we were all bowled over by Alan weren’t we?

Noreen: I don't think my DH worries about AR a whole heck of a lot. He and I both live in the real world. After almost 27 years, we both know why we're still here...together.

Maybe that's how Rima deals with the thought of overheated females at the stage door. On the other hand, maybe she avoids the temptation to smack some women upside the head with a brick by not putting herself where she has to see it any more than necessary.

Thanks to "just a lurker" for all that info. It must have been hard not to follow him that night ! That bit about how well he and Rima interact with each other gave me just a little pang of jealousy! They have had close to 40 years together! Wow hard to imagine being with HIM all those years. I wonder how she feels seeing so MANY female fans waiting for him night after night. I am glad you had a good time at the play. Thanks Viv

NY, - Tuesday, August 5th 2003 - 02:36:39 PM

Viv--

You asked if Alan seemed to have male friends, and I would have to say yes, most likely other people who are in the industry as well.

A friend and I saw PL in London several times between Christmas and New Years the year before last. Most times Rima was waiting for Alan at the stage door or just inside, but one night after he finished signing (Rima didn't show up--obviously knew he had other plans) two other men joined up with him and headed past the Albery and up toward the Dr. Martens store by Covent Gardens.

Yes, of course we were dying to follow to see where they were going, and no, OF COURSE we did not. We're fans, not stalkers, darn it all.

I think the discussion of his sexuality is kind of silly--he's a straight guy who is in a committed relationship, if you ever see them interact together, it's pretty darn obvious.

Also while I'm on a roll here--someone alluded to Rima's retirement. She retired from being an economics lecturer (what we Yanks'd call a university professor) but is still active in politics. Back to lurking~

Hiromi, thanks for letting me know, I really hope you get positive feedback from Mr. Ninagawa :0) That could be so great. Just been reading the latest in the guestbook. About suspecting Alan gay, seriously, - and with all my heart, I really don't think so. Yes, he has a lot of friends who are women, but I think he probably have friends who are guy's aswell. I think the reason why he probably have most female friends is bcause, he in away is in deep touch with his feelings, you know. It's difficult to explain, but I think he attracts women by the comforting a calm way his nature is. Maybe Alan is a bit to complicated (in a nice way) for many guys. And well, maybe he just feels more comfortable around women. I can see where some of you are coming from, with him and Rima that it's a special relationsship they have. - I don't want to make any conclutions, the only thing I can say is, if they are happy about it, I certaintly am too. And I don't think Alan would stay in a relationsship if he wasn't happy with it, he is to "pure" for that. Is this crap? Well, have a nice evening everyone :0)

If you are ever in northwestern Ohio with a little time on your hands, I urge you to visit the Popular Culture Library at Bowling Green State University. In addition to many other interesting film-oriented things in their vast holdings, they also have presskits for these films:

The Winter Guest
Quigley Down Under
Michael Collins
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Galaxy Quest
Blow Dry
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The press kits are fun to look at and contain interesting background information about the making of the film. I particularly enjoyed the press kit from TWG as it has a photo of Alan I have not seen before. They also have back issues of Mad magazine, and I amused myself between press kits by giggling at the RHPOT spoof.

Netflix is a great option for DVD rentals in the US (I'm not sure about anywhere else)

http://www.netflix.com

You pay a flat monthly fee on your credit card and have a list of dvds you want online - no late fees, their packaging handles the postage to and from - (postage paid) they're very fast to send, too. Thousands & thousands of titles. When they get one back, they send the next. You have three out at the same time. I've found lots of AR stuff and reviews and they're adding more titles all the time. - Good stock of new releases too -

I could have used a spell to make the work go faster, but alas did it the muggle way. One long section hopefully tomorrow will get done too. Does anyone know when the trailer at the movies will be shown for Love Actually that is being released in November? Also, for people trying to locate some of the AR films such as Mesmer, Rasputin, I found mine at Barnes &noble.com. I think Amazon may have them too. The Columbia DVD club has quite a few too. They also have some VHS specials on quite a few of his movies too. (I also saw one by Oliver Reed-another wonderful and very sexy actor in the Lonesome Dove series) To bad he died-he had that magnetic personality like AR- Maybe AR would take on the role by Oliver Reed in the series..especially where he carries the young bride upstairs to the bedroom...That A/C may be going colder in a few minutes. Dear loeje, Love = I ask God to bless AR every night. If I met him, I was afraid he would walk away from me. It would feel like he saw me looking in one of his windows at his home.
I had only one dream of AR. He had a squeaky voice. It was a nightmare! His voice is deep. I knew someone with a deep voice, but lost it to cancer.
Thinking about AR is more fun than thinking about my failing eyesight.
We all can have AR as a favorite actor. No one can take away our favorite actor, Alan Rickman.

Darn, I can't find Judas Kiss here in Atlanta. Do they have it where you guys are? By the way, i think girls should celebrate being tall. I'm 5'8" and love it, but also like men who are taller than me. Yea, short girls can wear high heels, but my friends who are below 5'5" are always jealous of me - saying I can eat whatever I want because my body is longer. I don't think alan should disguise his height - 6'1" is perfect.

I must wear low heels and even preferably no heel, because of ten years of ballet I can't stand even the tiniest discomfort in my feet, I'm that sensitive about what is on my feet.
I think maybe all the time I thought AR was of medium height is because he usually wears long suitcoats that give him the illusion of being smaller than his 6'1" height. When I found out how tall he actually was I was disappointed because I never felt comfortable around tall men. I don't want to feel like a "little girl" around a man!

I hope I didn't come off as anything about height. I really don't like being so very tall. I passed 5'3" in 4th grade. I had always wanted to be a child sized child - the heels thing - heels look stupid on tall women and I really like shoes - I just can't wear the high ones. I was commenting on Rima's diminutive stature - it's very sweet, and She must feel very feminine next to AR.
I was once paired in a wedding with a 6'8" tall groomsman and it was nifty to feel petite next to man - I just don't get that very much. my husband is the same height as I am.
Also Joan on the gay sex issue - a gay male friend of mine has been celibate 10 years now as he finds the gay social scene to be in such poor taste. We've (his friends) all made speculations - "it's just an excuse to be a hermit", "He's just too picky - no-one will ever measure up" but he contends that even though he's attraced to men, he finds the act offensive....

Chandra, being 5'3'' for the past eight years has never been a problem for me. Loving to goto dance parties or functions at school, my partners' heights have ranged from 5'1'' to 6'3''. I also wear shoes for comfort's sake, not for compensation, and my favorite dancing pair happen to be black dress flats. Besides, I adore looking up into their glimmering.

I read in the paper today about a new audio CD set of every Shakespeare play (98 cds), each one unabridged and directed by Clive Brill. Four hundred of the "best actors in the country" were involved, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if Alan Rickman was involved at all? Just curious--I doubt I'll ever be able to afford the $600 price tag, though maybe my local library can?

Nope, I think he is gregarious as all get-out and loves to travel and socialize for personal and professional reasons. Rima probably keeps herself extremely busy with her many areas of expertise and passionate sense of justifiable causes and may be camera shy. Alan’s work must attract such attention that they can both gladly do without at times.

Frankly, to see AR out with so many women other than Rima (and there appears to be only one picture floating around of the two of them out together) and to hear he is often out with other men, leads me to believe AR is not the wonderfully monogamous hetero man all of you would like him to be. (See all the pictures that show he is not with Rima???? Anything else is just conjecture and speculation.) But that's just my opinion. P.S. I believe I read somewhere that Rima has retired from politics, so she can't be all that busy.

None of this matters, he's still a fabulous Snape.

Dito Lee. As A.R. is a person who stands up for his beliefs (protesting the war) I do find it strange that people would think him hiding in a closet. I think he would have kicked that door down ages ago. I do think (although I am not pointing the finger at anyone here) that sometime people like to think someone is gay as this may abate their fantasies as to why they themselves are not fulfilling their own lives with a relationship with the poor man. (maybe they will "save him " lol). Now Australian men (and some women) always think softly spoken artistic (and Englishmen) are gay. So that make most of the world a bit sus(picious) in the eyes of Australia..a very homophobic place. Me, I think the poor man is a great and talented actor who has a wonderful relationship with his muse Rima. He is old enough to have figured out what works for him and we are all lucky that as part of his public persona he is happy man who is nice to his fans.

Thank you for the photo of Alan and Rima. I'd be proud major to be standing with him like that (and dressed up too!) and she's just so tiny!
I'm built like Nicole Kidman (not nearly as stunning - I've a snapey nose) I've always been a bit green about the tiny ladies - I know they are with me, too, but I assure you petites - a big woman cannot wear heels well. And it's harder to feel terribly feminine when you can look a 6-foot tall man in the eyes and you're looking down at the rest of them.
And to stand next to AR - I'd probably be like a mother tiger in the possessive department.
He told an interviewer that she was patient and very tolerant with him. He made it sound like you might need the patience of a saint to live with him.

I'm not being offensive, but why does the 'Is He Gay?' issue always come up on the guestbook at least every month or two? Each time it's resolved with a resounding 'No', anyway. I think it may be something to do with a glitch in society which says if you're not married with kids by the time you're forty there must be something different about you. I strongly believe that he isn't, and even if he is, who cares? is it any of our business anyway?

CA, USA - Saturday, August 2nd 2003 - 11:44:38 PM

Not that it's any of our business, but as an actor, Rickman has periods of free time. As a teacher, now retired, but having a full time job as a councillor, with being on something like ten different boards, Ms. Horton does not have the free time during the day that he does. So probably they plan on being together on the weekend, and he hangs out with friends, a lot of them women. I think that when they are childless, they have more time to go out and about, but when they start with the childbearing, then he finds someone else to hang about with that has the time. Ruby Wax, Juliet Stevenson, and Emma Thompson have all been his "free time mates" in the English sense of the word. He does hang out with men too. I saw him go to dinner with a photographer friend after Private Lives in London. Anyone that has met him knows that he is not gay. He and his lady just have very different schedules, and since they have been with each all of their adult lives, it seems reasonable that they might give each other a bit of space.

I did not mean for my question to get derailed with the gay issue. I don't think he is gay (not that there is anything wrong with that -as Jerry Seinfeld would say). I was just wondering what his fans who frequent this GB think about why he is so often spotted by Londoners either alone or with other women friends. Is it because Rima is so involved with Politics that she is so often elsewhere?

I think he is NOT gay, and has a monogamous relationship with Rima, even if they don’t live together. Emma Thompson alluded to it in an interview, and it seems to fit. Our man is just special in that way too.

Sorry I did not mean to suggest that he is gay. I don't think so. I don't think their relationship would have lasted close to 40 years. Especially now-a-days when just about everyone is coming out of the closet- a' la Richard Chamberlin. I think Alan would have come out of the closet also by now. I am just puzzled because as I said I would want to spend more time with AR if I had the chance. I don't mean the "joined at the hip" type of thing, but it seems to be SO RARE to actually see them together. He is so often alone or with someone else. As I said before Rima is a better woman than me because I would tend to be concerned with him always out with beautiful actresses etc.

Could't it be he's gay???, i know Im on thin ice here, but i wouldn't be surprised at all, 'cause he's together with so many women as if to hide his gayness, i know many gay men and they all are putting up the hetero hat, just because they don't want their friends and other loved onces to know about it, so i can imagine that Rima thinks : allright , i have a very attractive , hansom man, but we go our own seperate ways, because he's gay, and believe me , there are lots of women who live together with a gay man, i don't want to embarrys you, but it could be. forgive me my boldness.

I'm so excited there is a place where people talk about Alan Rickman. I first saw him in Harry Potter, and I loved the movies and the books. I found his character very intriguing, so I looked up the actor. So, in the past few weeks, I've seen Sense and Sensibility, Blowdry, Dogma, Truly Madly Deeply, and that King of the Hill episode. Which is your favorite movie? I couldn't find the movie Mesmer. The bathtub scene in Truly Madly Deeply is very sweet. Although, I really loved Blowdry. I liked his character in that one a lot, and I like the blonde hair look. I also just found this site with interviews, but I'm sure you guys have heard of it: http://www.nd.edu/~tchapman/voice.html

I'm wondering about their relationship too. It looks like an arrangement of some sort. But they have been together for so long that sometime old couple needs space to breath. It's only one theory it could be something else. I keep telling myself it is his private life after all (not my business at all) and whatever he decide to do with it, it will never affect my admiration for his outstanding work. Who’s got an another opinion on this touchy subject?

Set the video alert! If you haven't seen it/don't have a copy of it, UK TV are showing Die Hard on Wednesday, ITV1 at 9pm, with a break for the News at 10. Why do AR and Rima do so many things separately? Perhaps because they've been together so long. Being joined permenantly at the hip seems to be more a young/new love kind of thing to me, I think a mature, long standing relationship would embody trust and freedom, me and my present squeeze (just got the first 25 years under us belts!) seem to work that way. Just a personal view.

Just like Joan from PA I have often wondered why Alan is so often out on his own or with female friends instead of Rima. Does he have any male friends? I can understand why Rima would not want to go to movie openings or to places where photographers would splash her photo all over the newspapers. But on this GB there are so many sightings of Alan at restaurants or art galleries or parties or plays or at flower shows etc and he is either alone or with another female friend. I guess it is hard for me to figure out because if I was lucky enough to be his partner I would want to go more places with him. I also have to admire Rima because she must be very secure. I would have a very hard time if I was his partner knowing that he is so often in the company of other women. Why do you think they do so many things separately?

So I probably couldn't add anything you didn't know. But now I just had to let you know that there was another human being out there with "a heart belonging to Alan" :0) I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to the "Love Actually" release.
