Evening all,

Karina, having just re-done my site, I have a new found respect for all of the hard work you have done here on our behalf. Some of the margins are quite right yet...but I'm working on it. Also, there is a link to this page, if that's ok? So, everyone, come and take a look around, sign my guestbook, as I am always open to suggestions from other 'maniacs!

Thanks,

Brenda :-)

I have waaay too many movie posters for my 1bedroom apartment ,so if anyone's interested I have a 1-sheet of An Awfully Big Adventure. It has head shots fo Rickman, Grant, and Cates. It also has 4 nail holes in it and has been covered with contact paper so it's a little more rescilent and won't tear as easy. If you are interested just e-mail me. Also, I live in Des Moines and am beginning to wonder if I'm ever going to see the Winter Guest. It will be at least spring if not later.

I need someone to explain this to me....... I put a video clip of Alan on 'The View' on my website. I also put up a clip of Emma and Phyllida's appearance on the same show...... According to the counter more people are watching Emma & Phyllida than Alan.......... WHY??????? Yours in confusion, Kel

I thought that TWG was going to be at the KOIN cinema beginning this weekend, but it wasn't in the paper, and when I called they were clueless about when it would arrive. It is going to have to be retitled "The Spring Guest", or maybe "The Summer Guest"? if it doesn't get here pretty soon. Anyone understand the marketing of this film?

Thank you Renie and Stezi for your advice concerning TWG screenplay. I will see the film before reading it.

In an old guestbook, I found a phone number for Judy Hofflund, which is close, but off by one digit. The company name is Hofflund/Polone; phone: (310) 859-1971; fax: (310) 859-7250. I couldn't find the exact address, but it is in Beverly Hills, CA.

Karina: You may want to add the above info to the FAQ. Thanks.

A fellow 'maniac (hi Raffaella!) mentioned that in the story Murdr,Obliquely Annie's 10 years older than Dwight. That struck me as particularly interesting, and could imagine a play/movie with AR & say, Judi Dench. Does that mean I'm getting older, I wonder?

Off topic, but Liam & KBranagh fans must buy March's GQ. Ken looks particularly yummy.

Oh dear, just got a look at the cartoon on Claire's page. Not too flattering to say the least, but do we loyal Rickmaniacs really care? We know he's gorgeous! Does anyone know when Judas Kiss or Dark Harbor are going to be released? I can't seem to find any mention of these films anywhere in the newspapers or magazines. I'd love it if someone could post some info. I feel like I'm going to go into withdrawl if I don't see Alan in a new movie soon!

Claire, I love the new pictures thankyou... I do hope that Brandon will return at some point though. It's lovely to see the smile.. Don't steel yourself to get rid of Sinclair he"s too lovely...unles you have another Sinclair to replace it with.. How about atop the workbench as the dishwasher overflows, or sitting on the floor in the supermarket. Saw Rastutin on Tuesday as it was released in Aus. Love it.Well actually I'll need to see it again as I only watched HIM the first time so I have no idea whether it is good . At least the newspaper headlines were authenticly written in old Russian. Some of the symbols are no longer used. Again keep up the good work Claire and of course Karina.

The cartoonist who for years has done terrific caricatures of theater people for the New York Times (his name is on the tip of my tongue...begins with an H?) did a great caricature of AR and Lindsay Duncan in LLD on Broadway. I'll look it up and see if anyone could post it here. He went right for the curling lip and the nonexistent eyes, too--just dark horizontal lines.

I had assumed that the photo with the conspicuous wedding ring was taken on the set of Dark Harbor, with AR in costume as the onscreen spouse of Polly Walker. I've also assumed that Rima Horton (as a Second Wave feminist) was marriage-averse. Then again, I read recently that Helen Mirren (age 51) and her partner after cohabiting for twelve years recently married in Scotland. Go figure.

Is Mr. Rickman finally married? I saw a ring. If it is true, perhaps it will calm down some of the journaliists that seem preoccupied with sex. Asking if he would replace his sweetheart with a twenty year old starlet. AS IF! I'm rather glad that I didn't see Dangerous Liassons, as some people apparently have'nt gotten over it. Why would anyone ask if he is sexually voracious, as if it is anyone's business. I mean this in the nicest way,but he is fifty two, and hopefully has learned some self control by now. If only some journalists would. I admire his lady-she must be incredibly patient-I would not like my husband to travel so much and live in a different place. I like him next to me at night, even if he does snore, which is something else men do when they pass fourty!

I rather liked the cartoon. Now I fully understand the attraction. It's not the hands, the voice or the slide -- it's the nose, that PHALLIC nose. How subtle! That look -- scornfully narrowing those eyes down that probiscus -- how tantalizing. He could give Cyrano a whole new prospective.

And now for something completely heretical -- this guestbook is still under construction, right? Everything else about the page looks great, but I miss knowing who the writers are and where they are from. And there is no link to the comments page. And the text, well this is about an artist isn't it? My apologies to Empress Karina (isn't that what we voted her?) for the complaints.

There is an article in today's Electronic Telegraph which surveys a "list of actors with the most star power" or the "most bankable" stars. Tom Cruise is #1, AR is 250th... just above Lauren Bacall and Helen Mirren, as it says. I don't think I can manage a link, but the article is in the International News section and is titled "Sean Connery dubbed Britain's most bankable star by film executives". February issue of Dazed and Confused includes an interview with Ang Lee, beginning:

Edinborgh Film Festival 97. Ang Lee the Taivanese director of such aclaimed dramas as Pushing Hands, The wedding banquet and eat Drink Man Woman is in town to promote his new film The Ice Storm. hearing that his Sense and Sensibility star Alan Rickman is down the road he locates and finally ambushes the usually dourfaced thespian thereafter erupting into a lengthy and endearing fit of gigles...

Regarding the Ice Storm am I the only one to notice the similarities with The Winter Guest frustated parents, confused teenager and a lot of frost and exsyensialism and freak death accidents.. Very nice indeed but could we have something like S&S next time, please!!!!

Karina, just a quick two question note:

1. I'm trying to back up some months and find that September - December 1997 are not available. Are the urls working?

2. If you're thinking of fine-tuning this format, you may want to consider returning to the January 1998 format. The font is darker and the data are presented in a more-compact fashion. Less lines used and it is easier to follow.

Thanks for looking into this and thanks for continuing this site!

Here is my best effort at translating the French Article. ----Barbara

Première, March 1998

In films, English actor Alan Rickman is sometimes evil but often nice. For the Winter Guest, his directorial debut, he is more philosophical.

ALAN RICKMAN S'INVITE EN ECOSSE

interview: Eric Libiot

photo: Steffen Thalemann

Even if he would rather we didn't speak of it, Alan Rickman became known as the vicious Hans Gruber in Die Hard, or as the over the top sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood with Kevin Costner. But those who have seen Truly, Madly, Deeply, Closet Land or Michael Collins know that Alan Rickman is an actor who is better than just exhuberant. And The Winter Guest, the first film he has directed, will not say the contrary.

PREMIERE: This film, intimate and close to the characters is very different from the ones for which you are known.

ALAN RICKMAN: If you look a dozen of the films I have made, there are really only two that are like that: Die Hard and Robin Hood. These films were successful, but the roles I played don't have much to do with other characters I have played. One film of which I am the most proud is Truly, Madly, Deeply by Anthony Minghella (The English Patient). I have a lot of affection for Anthony, which is not the case with all the directors with whom I have worked. Some films are more like a battlefield. And they leave their scars.

What is the theme of The Winter Guest?

For Sharman (MacDonald, cowriter of the film with Rickman), it's death. I would rather say it is the hope of a new life for a young adolescent and his two friends. I wanted to film these little moments that have a great importance for all of us.

The film is taken from a play that you once directed. What is different on screen?

The relationship between the mother and daughter is stronger, because for a film, one of the four stories must be more important. Filming these stories is a little like a piece of music: you have to find the rhythm, the harmony. We were also more explicit about the love and sexual relationships of the two adolescents. Finally, the atmosphere of the play was tragic, while on film it is optimistic.

Was it your idea to get Emma Thompson and her mother to act together?

No. Emma was not in the play, but wanted to be in the movie; it didn't pose any difficulty, because she is old enough to have a 17 year old son. And This made the production and distribution of the film easier.

Did she cut her hair before the film or for the film?

For the film. I found that she never looked so beautiful. During the rehearsals I asked her to think of certain French actresses, such as Stéphane Audran or Isabelle Huppert. These actresses have a very subtle manner of keeping their guard or keeping their secret in silence. In England, actresses are much more expressive. I didn't want that. I asked her to think French, and she did it well.

Did you know exactly what film you wanted to make?

Yes, I had everything in mind and I spend a lot of time on the locations before filming. I had to find a balance between what I wanted to do and the exterior constraints. The element to which I paid the most attention was the weather. There was a character with very definite opinions, but also very changeable.

While directing actors, did you learn anything you can use as an actor?

Not really. But afterward I was very happy to rediscover the animal pleasure of playing.

What sort of animal?

A deer. An animal that is nervous, attentive, always on guard, and who can jump all around if necessary.

Like any good Englishman, do you have a desire to direct a Shakespeare play?

Maybe. I'm thinking of Troilus and Cressida. It is one of the few plays Shakespeare wrote without thinking that someone would try to adapt it for film.

Would you act in it?

No. I have always refused to do both. But when I saw Happy Hour, with Steve Buscemi, I told myself that it could be possible. But it would require, as was the case for Steve, that the role was very close to who you really were. If the character were a composition, it would seem to me to be very difficult. In any case, I'm not ready for that.

Have you been influenced by directors you like?

No. Given the theme of this film, the only references I had were on the subject itself, the way in which one can construct one's own life, as when one looks out a window.

What types of films do you like?

If I went to a deserted island, I would bring Nashville, by Altman. And I really liked The lce Storm, by Ang Lee, and not only because I worked with him on Sense and Sensibility. Look, there's another film where I wasn't a villain, you see! I like films where we talk about human beings, and we don't show them either too black or too white.

Your future plans?

Dogma,a satirical comedy with Kevin Smith (Clerks Méprise Multiple) I am a good angel who likes to drink tequila in bars. I am happy that Kevin Smith wants to work with me. Maybe he has seen my eccentric side.

When are you filming?

In March. Before that I am travelling to promote The Winter Guest, and I will take 15 days of vacation--some time to let my wings grow.

Ciao Raffaella, anche io vioglio un scan di questo articolo (con photo naturalmente). Grazie e includo il mio E-mail: Stezi@wxs.nl I've seen Mesmer, January Man an An Awfully Big Adventure now. Great movies, great actor. Indeed, it's a shame, Alan appears only halfway the film in AABA. In Mesmer he was really fantastic, I could almost feel his hands...... As Ed in JM he was a painter, very close to his original profession. He 52 years now and still the best! I hope we'll be able to enjoy his films for many more years.

Yes, Raffaella I would like a scannerized! (Such an appropriate word). Computers are so much fun, how else could one be totally silly 2,000 miles away! Happy Birthday to the man who makes all other men look somewhat.... wanting for something. If you know what I mean. It is 1:30 am on Sunday in the naked pueblo, as Tucson is known and I have dutifully celebrated, as I am sure all AR's fans have. May you have many many more!

Maxine: I also loved Mesmer, although I have only watched it once. I truly am a sucker for clothes like that, but to see him in a leading role, and really his performance was very commanding and yes, mesmerizing...I was enthralled by it...and the kiss...so tender... those hands...those eyes...

Alright, enough, maybe I'll try my hand at IRC...hope everyone enjoys this special day...cheers!

Found this GB about AR and am now happy, happy, happy -- so many others out there who share my overwhelming interest (okay, maybe a little, teeny, tiny addiction) to that man and his films, particularly TMD and CME. Alas, am new to cyperspace and haven't a clue about IRC, IRZXQPP, or whatever -- or much else for that matter -- so unless I can con a son (very difficut) into a few lessons by tomorrow in time for birthday bash, I'll just have watch TMD and eat cake. Not a difficult task though. At the risk of offending anyone: thought Rasputin was okay, but found Mesmer, well, forgive me, anything but mesmerizing. So found the recent New Yorker article an eye-opener. Aside from TWG (which I haven't seen, I live far from big city lights), anyone have any word on anything else of AR's that may be out later this year? Next year? Ah well, am enjoying all the info at this, Karina's, site. Lin (sorry this is so long)

Pam, the book is small, thin, and paperback, and it has several good b/w photos from the movie and behind the scenes. I have to say, at the risk of sounding incredibly ungrateful, that I agree with Rebecca that this new incarnation of the guestbook is hard on the eyes. I don't miss the blue sky & clouds of the earlier design but I do miss its compactness and its dark, bold, clear font.

But, there's no grayscale whatsoever, I'll have to work on that one...

Anyway, a question...has anyone gotten TWG screenplay yet? I can order it from the local bookstore for $13... I was wondering how big it was, if there were any photos or notes by anyone involved in the film???

*************** AR:

It is an old cliché "the older the violin the sweeter the music" but it is as though it were written for you. Each year that passes, every new role, brings a new dimension to the person the we here perceive as Alan Rickman. It only stands to reason that it also brings a new dimension to the person you are in real life. With this in mind, I want to wish you all the love, and happiness, and continued success and whatever else it is that makes you such a special person. Happy Birthday.

OK. So there. That's as mushy as I can get. Now go eat cake!

Renie, I agree Hamlet is a dangerous subject... I have had hours of drunken debate with friends over it (we had a lot of fun though!). I did not see AR's Hamlet, but I did read that his Hamlet was 'hated?' (something like that) and sold out. I took that to mean he portrayed Hamlet as a character who was hated. Maybe I'm wrong. Any lucky slobs out there actually get to see it? I would love to hear a first hand review. <p>jabernat@u.arizona.edu (aka Joy)

In the review of "Close My Eyes," I read: "For Rickmaniacs it features the earliest of the on-film Rickman bedroom scenes." He does bedroom scenes?!? Be still my heart! My keyboard will short out with all the drool. (I'm still a newcomer to his films.)

Way to look into it, Andrea...;-) Claire's right, of course, it wasn't *me* that was in London and saw AR--I was merely relating Chris's story. (I did mention that fact earlier in the week.) If it had been *me* it would have been a very different story...with a different "telling" (go on, it's okay, use your imagination and write it in your head...)....Maxine, I haven't gotten my copy of TWG screenplay yet from Amazon, although I ordered it ages ago. It just hasn't arrived, I assume. . . . ljabernat, I don't know why your Hamet comment touched such a nerve with me...Hamlet does have his moments of cowardice, depending on how it's played. And he does make some poor choices. But there is a lot more to hs character than just being a "coward" or a "jerk"; and I don't think AR played him as either, although I wasn't lucky enough to see it. I've kept this short, although most of me wants to post a huge dissertation...:-)

AR played Achilles in Troilus and Cressida the same year he played Valmont. I read somewhere that he was intrigued by the play, because he felt Achilles was mentally disturbed. I agree it is not one of Shakespeare's better plays, but then it is a tragedy. AR seems to enjoy playing characters with strange twists to them, and if they don't already have them, he gives them one (ref: Hans Gruber) It would have to be why he chose to play P.L. O'Hara. Charming but dysfunctional. I wish I had seen him play Hamlet. Everyone but AR has tried to turn Hamlet into some kind of hero when he was actually a coward and a jerk.

I noticed in Eva's recap of the French Premiere article that AR would love to direct a film version of Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida". I found this interesting because I personally think that play is one of Shakespeare's worst efforts. Of course, I'm not sure how much I'm influenced by the particular production I saw - the RSC's 1996 version with Joseph Fiennes and Victoria Hamilton (Henrietta Musgrave from "Persuasion") - which I really didn't care for. I won't bore you all with all my reasons for disliking the play, but the lack of explanation for Cressida's actions certainly stands out. Is there anyone out there who likes "Troilus and Cressida" and might want to shed some light on why AR might want to direct it? -Whitney

I think I can explain my obsession:

1. He does not act, he "becomes." If you've ever seen him in such diverse roles as those he played in "Truly, Madly, Deeply" and "Closetland," you know what I mean.

2. He is absolutely beautiful!

3. His voice . . .

4. The way he speaks . . .

5. The way he moves . . .

6. Something in his eyes . . .

7. He has an intensity . . .

Hey, maybe you're right. Maybe it's not possible to explain why he stands out.

My name is Augustina. I surfed in here today after watching S&S, needing a fix. I got it! This is a great site, and I loved the pictures. I haven't looked at the sounds yet, but I can guarantee that they'll be somewhere on my desktop sometime soon.

I read a lot about "slides" in the GB. I have never seen AR do this, but I wasn't looking. I'll have to rent all of his movies and look for them. What a hardship!

He was born in '46? And I thought Jason Carter was old! (He is if you're still under 20. I have unusual taste for someone my age. Good taste, but unusual all the same.)

I was thinking about renting Die Hard, but when I read that AR's character is much like Gary Oldman's character in Air Force One, I wasn't so sure. Is he recognizable as AR?

Also, what did people think of Mesmer? I haven't seen it, and I would like to know if it was good, or if it stunk, before I see it. Seeing AR in drech would be too painful.

Thanks for listening to my rantings, Augustina

Hi everyone!

I can't believe that after all the fruitless web searches for ~anything~ about Mr. Rickman, I finally found a site this extraordinary. I had been convinced that my friends and I were the only people on this planet who obsessed over his performances the way we do. Lo and behold, there's a whole clan of you out there in cyberspace!

My name is Trish, and I live in NY. I saw The Winter Guest at the Paris Theater a week and a half ago, and I'm still in awe. My friends Lisa, Cindy and I are having an AR video marathon this coming Saturday, and you all know why. *s* I've been lurking around here for about a week now, and I'm still amazed that there are other people out there who have watched CME over and over again!

Well, I just wanted to comment on how wonderful this web site is.

Wow, Claudia, that picture of Sinclair is great! Actually it looks more like Alan in Sinclair's clothes; I think Alan might be a moodier sort than Sinclair! Anyway, thank you for that picture! I'm wondering if it was a candid shot during the production rather than from a scene, because he didn't have that attitude in any scene that I can remember... unless it was one cut out. Any info on that? THANK YOU!!!

French Premiere (tel + 33 1 41 34 91 11) has a feature on AR in relation to The Winters Guest or as they call it in French L`Invitée de L´hiver. The inteview is illustrated by a full page colurphoto of the typical magazine type. Rickman in a corner, dressed in black, looking gloomy at the photographer. The interview is much about AR preference in films. Trolius and Cressida would be his choice if he were to direct a shakespeare movie (also my own choice) His Desert Island movie would be Nashville (one of my favorates as well) and he is very impressed with The ice storm , and not just because he knows Ang Lee.. H also expresses great fondness for Anthony Minghella who did not like other directors turned the set into a warzone.

The magazine also includes feauture on forme and upcoming Rickman co stars like Kate Winslet, Kevins Klines and Costners, Affleck and Damon, a postcard from The Winter Guest and a review. I short value for money.

Renie- I applaud you and thank you for behaving so admirably in the face of such temptation! You (and, I gather, everyone else) allowed A.R. and his party to enjoy their evening out more or less as ordinary folk. It's one thing to ask for an autograph backstage, or at a booksigning or etc., when the man is wearing his "professional hat". But when he (or any other notable) is trying to live his own, private life, he deserves courtesy, respect, and privacy. Bravo for you!

And thanks for sharing your breathtaking adventure.

omigod! omigod! omigod! Renie don't tantalise us like that. We want more, MOre, MORE! What did they talk about? Did they gossip? What was the demeanour of the conversation? By 'his' lady, do you mean Rima. I know you are much more polite than I, but do you mean she looks 51 and not quite as attractive as one may expect? God I'm a nosey b..ch! And I'm intrigued by the 3/4 brown silk coat, sounds a bit pooncy? You've got to set me straight. My mind is racing at a hundred miles an hour. By the way how was Cyrano? I'll be there in a month, will it still be playing do you think? Did you catch his eye just once?

I hope you all had a Happy Valentine's Day. Here is the Rickman sighting post; sorry to keep the e-mail requests waiting. It wasn't me in Mr. I disguise (no, really!). Apologies, too for the lack of paragraphs--the return key rarely works for me for some reason. Imagine that, me, chanting for the speedy return of HTML...___I'm in London at the moment, and my first theatre of the trip was"Cyrano de Bergerac" at the Lyric Shaftesbury on Thursday night. I wentto the theatre at 7pm and got into the long disorganised queue to pickup my ticket. A familiar (dark and stormy) face was coming out of thelobby, headed for the queue. He got in line directly behind me, with afriend and his lady. For the next 15 minutes or so I stood in line withAlan Rickman 6" behind me. I couldn't turn around, of course, but Icould listen to that honey and molasses voice for the duration and myknees were weak. Extraordinary that he waited in line like the plebstopick up what were undoubtedly complementary house seats.I can't remember his partner's name, but it was she of the curly darkhair, glasses, looking her age. For those who live for details, he waswearing slim black trousers and a brown cloth 3/4 coat (silk ormicrofibre, I think). Blond and to die for. In the theatre he wassitting in the row behind me, at about H10. During the interval he andhis party hid out in the corridor rather than stand in the bar. Butreally he seemed to pass utterly unnoticed.I went to the stage door afterwards to catch Tony Sher and Greg Doran. They took forever to come out (and were very kind), but of courseRickman and party came to the door as well. They spent a lot of timestanding outside talking with various friends like Ken Bones and Raymond Coulthard (there's your Fiennes/TEP connection). It was extraordinary. And all I could reasonably do was ignore him, look in the otherdirection, but prick up my ears to catch every syllable of that voice.___Re: Sliding. One of my favorites (besides those already mentioned) is in MO, where Dwight (*sigh*) is grabbing the doorframe (with his hands, of course) having slid into the hallway in pursuit of Annie, who now faces him at the end of the hall. Then he says, "Goodnight, Annie."

The knees I notice most are MINE--as in, getting weak at the knees when I see him!

Thank you Karina for all the .wavs on your sound page! I used to love hearing the "amazing" .wav when the GB came on, but now I have changed every beep my computer used to make into you know who's voice! It is great! If you have any questions how to do it, contact me and I'll try to walk you through it. It's a riot when I walk away from my computer for a few minutes and suddenly hear Alan's voice coming from my office, as my screen saver has come on and his voice with it! Love it!

BTW, my favorite slide was always the one in RH where he grabs his servant's coat as he slides past him. And then the Die Hard one when he slides out of the office, and shooting the gun and yelling for everybody to go up to the roof; and grabs Bonnie Bedelia's arm and turns her around and looks at her (ooh, mama!).

The slide down the bannister in Mesmer is adorable!

Let's not forget the most memorable slide of all---the slide down the bannister in Mesmer!!! Wonderful, heroic. Actually AR does slide quite a bit as we can see from all the comments. I wonder if that is part of his acting philosophy of movement not to mention his regard for Fred Astair? TMD all, Noel (off to sign up at Arthur Murray's Dance Studio!)

Most of the slide examples are exactly the ones I've noticed. Other honorable mentions include the scene in Closet Land where he has on the combat boots and is holding the rubber hose?, slides over hits the table and demands to know 'How?' Madeline Stowe is meeting with the rooster. My definition of the slide is that both feet have to on the ground. That is what makes it a bit unusual, its not a move most actors make consistently. I could not tell if he does it in Micheal Collins during the scene with Liam after he has signed the treaty, could anyone else tell? I am pretty sure he does it in Murder Obliquely when he asks to have concert tuned in on the radio.

I'd almost forgotten about it, but for those ladies who were at the Borders signing... could you again describe the book he was signing. Please let us know. Thanks.

There is a short slide in S&S when they are all waiting for the Dr. to come out of Marianne's room, Brandon gives a quick slide.

I'm not sure these qualify as slides, more in the 'leap' category: Jamie's leap from the chair to the piano bench in TMD and Dwight's leap across the room to ask Luther to find the concert on the radio [also involves dangling over a railing].

I've noticed he covers a lot of ground quickly in his movies. I'm sure there's other examples.

This interesting use of space really makes me *long* to see him move on the stage!

Gail, I think the reference is to actual physical sliding, which he does do. The best one is in RHPOT, where he's running after Robin Hood through the church just after their first meeting and slides right past his turn towards the door. There's also a short slide in "Rasputin" when he returns to the palace after being exiled to Siberia. And although not on his feet, there is the GREAT slide down the bannisters in "Mesmer". Hope this is a correct interpretation of the earlier comments. Anne

Jabernaut,

As far as the preponderance of "slides" going on in ARs work, I do think they are there. Looking particularly at Die Hard (which, I know, we've all seen a million times....but still). AR's presentation of the overall character appears to be based on a lionine/sliding countenance. Especially in the scene when he runs and utilimately SLIDES as he hoists the telelphone to have John McClaine hear all the screaming people. Also, the beautiful moment when he, as "William Clay", confidently SLIDES as he raises the gun to shoot McClaine. And ultimately, when he SLIDES over to Holly Genaro/McClaine, and states: " I am an *exceptional* thief, Ms. McClaine; and now that I am moving up to kidnapping....you should be MORE POLITE!"" ...and slides back again to continue loading the treasury bills. (Sorry, guys, I've seen the movie over 50 times...what do you expect from a fellow Rickmaniac!) ok...that's it for now. (ha, ha) :-)

In relation to a review of a biography of Rasputin, The British Sunday Times has included a publicity shot of AR s Rasputin. The picture is taken from abowe and AR stands in a half Messias/diabolic posture. The quality of the photo is very good. You could almost read his palms, so clear is the picture even in newspaper quality. Great eyes as well.

From the Toronto TARTS post-TWG discussion- The setting and photography were gorgeous, some of the shots a bit contrived. No, that was not AR as the man who bumps into the two women - too fleshy if you compare with the shots we saw of AR as director on location. Law was a marvel as the mother, ET more cast to type but still great. The 'no gloves on a cold day' controversy - a split here - the Canucks thought it odd, the Brits thought it usual - Brits are pretty cavalier about gloves, hats, scarves etc. The 'bath/almost seduction in front of the fire' scene - Canucks had no problem, Brits wanted to know where the goosebumps were in a large room with a pathetic fire and the heating off! The end - the Canucks worried about the boys, the Brits worried about the kittens. Conclusion - we enjoyed it but hope our next few outings will be to films with AR as actor, not director. Gail

Hiram, I bought the TWG soundtrack. And was terribly disappointed in the singing of Liz Fraser as the vocalist. She has done a fine job of swallowing and slurring AR's lyrics to the point where I cannot make out some of the words. It is an awfully sloppy piece of work on her part, and I cannot understand why Rickman let it through (if he did, in fact, have control over this part of the project).<p>

From what I *can* make out on an all-too-short track, his lyrics are lovely and reflect the film well. Nothing terribly profound, with the few lines he did write being repeated - sometimes thrice. I just wonder if the song would have had more strength to it had a more-disciplined singer been attached, say, a Mary Chapin Carpenter, a Mary Black or a Maireid Sullivan. All in all, I'd have to hear more of AR's lyrics to be able to give you a considered opinion.

I agree, I like the old one better. This has all the comfort of a pick up truck bumper. You know me I say what I think. And too, I have a suggestion, lets have a bulletin board for AR news: 1.TV 2. Interviews. 3.New projects. so that one does not have to read pages and pages and GB for facts. But, having said this, I'm sure Karina did this with much hard work and the fact that she does it at all is so wonderful.

Oh....drat it all anyway. I was in a Drs. office yesterday, reading a review of TWG.. I just could not bring myself to tear the page out of the mag with all the other people in the waiting room. The mag was called "Entertainment..something" (perhaps even Entertainment Tonight)....had Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson on the cover.

In a nutshell, the review stated that it was a good film, chronicaling the "icy" relationship between a mother and her daughter. Elegantly filmed, while giving AR a LOT of credit for his directorial debut. (which, as we all know, he richly deserved!) No pics of AR, but a nice two-shot of Emma and her mum.

Just thought I'd pass that on. :-)

Some Dogma info (sorry if you've all seen this before .. I haven't seen it posted):

Apparently AR *loved* Chasing Amy (Kevin Smith's last film) so much that he contacted Smith to tell him so. As a result Smith showed AR the script for Dogma and AR just loved it...and we all know what happened next.

Also, according to K. Smith, AR will be using his "fantastic" accent in the role as Metatron .. the word "fantastic" was Smith's own .. he referred to the accent as such when he was asked by someone if AR was going to disguise it.

Well, that makes *one* Dogma fact that I'm happy about! :-)

I just received S&S in widescreen (bought it from www.amazon.com) and it's like watching it from the first time. All the Brandon moments are INTACT.

I have a request to ask of as many of you as possible. The History Channel (sister of A&E) has shown several HBO made movies (Gotti and Truman) that came out at the same time as Rasputin. Since HBO costs and they treat Rasputin shamefully (putting it on in the middle of the night!)... maybe we could get enough requests in to the History Channel so that they might think of showing it. You can get to them via www.historychannel.com and go to the underlined phrase "Please use this form to submit your comments"... and press that one until they get you to the feedback page that has the place to write your request. Let's see if we can get them to show it! Thanks! Maxine

I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean it in a ...art..kind of impression way. By the way, Maxine, my e mail says it corrupt..so its not working. Perhaps if I offered it a bribe..

Glad to see these pages are back. The site looks very nice Karina.

For those who check the newsaskew pages for the latest Dogma info, the site was shut down last week. It is resurrected at www.newsaskew.com. Found at this site: Kevin Smith is now in Pittsburgh. Most of the cast will arrive in a couple of weeks. KS plans to ask cast members to come online at his board (www.viewaskew.com/wwwboard). KS checks this board almost daily to answer fans' questions.

Re: Helping Karina out with expenses.

Many service providers charge webmasters by the amount downloaded. If you are always accessing the front page just to get to the guestbook or have set the guestbook as your Netscape default, you may be running up Karina's bill unnecessarily.

Since I access the guestbook almost every day, I try to keep charges down by bookmarking the guestbook directly. If people mention other new things on the page or I feel like surfing, then I play. Trying to help, not criticize - Laurie P.S. Karina -- Stylish new look!

Well, I've got the Guestbook working again. The text should be okay on everyone's screens now. FoF should be working fine now too.

I still need to find a better GB template that will allow the HTML codes to work. I'm not sure why they don't. ON the up side, however, you don't have to use HTML to format the guestbook entries anymore. But, italics and links won't work yet.

There are 3 or 4 new articles on the articles page. I have some snappies that I have to put together into new picture pages (actually, I want to re-install the old snappy software, it was much better than the "new and improved" version 2.

Check out the What's New page from time to time. Using Front Page to edit the site makes it easier both for you to check stuff out and for me to update stuff.

From this week's Stage.

Misunderstood Rickman makes his intentions clearer.
"The latest round of cuts to the arts would suggest extremely poor timing on my part if my intention at the NFT/Guardian evening had been to attack the RSC per se (January 15, News, Page 2).
Your reporter misses the point. I am very aware of the debt I owe to the company, and whether or not my sympathy for Adrian Noble is "unsought", it is genuine- born out of a long personal friendship and deep professional respect. I was trying to point out the dichotomy between continumal underfunding and real artistic freedom, but I am happy to take this opportunity to apologise for not knowing of recent actor development programmes within the company and to applaud all such measures wholeheartedly.

Hi Karina

Looks like you've been working hard. Sorry I can't be of any help with your layout problems.

I'd suggest a change of font for the GB text as the Arial/Helvetica text is hard to read and would help if it was smaller font or darker.

Don't hit me! I know the hassles of using new software. I'm only trying to be helpful.
