I just saw TWG in Atlanta. The pastels were striking on the beach and the jewel tones were great in the house. I feel like I ate an exotic dish in some Moroccan port, but I don't feel like a saw a film. I feel like I just bought something fabulous in a museum gift shop, but not like I just saw a film. I think The Winter Guest is more like a painting than a film, too bad you can't hang it up somewhere, add it to your decore in some way. Very pretty but very delicate, like a dream half remembered. Butterfly cacoon, not oak or rock (though there were quite a few of those in there) How can you manage to make rock seem as insubstantial as human life? Bravo. I still want to hang it on my wall.

At the risk of raising the ire of some guestbook denizens, I have to agree with those who have suggested that we give to local theatre companies. It was an interesting cooperative effort last year and I'm sure the Almeida was grateful for our response but there are other theatres both in London (the Bush) and in the US (Delia has kindly offered to supply us with names) that could be supported as well. I'm sure Mr. Rickman doesn't confine his energies to the Almeida either. Perhaps we could find a way for us to post our names and our theatres of choice (but not the amount of our donations) on a separate page as our birthday tribute for Mr. Rickman. (Aside: Delia...can I have the list for my area?)

Christine in Germany, a word of encouragement: by all means send AR your novel. I'm about to send him one myself, and I believe others on this page are also writing with him in mind. He may say yes to one of us! If he says no -- well, I've got lots of rejection letters, I may as well have one with his name on it. And if I don't hear back, I'll choose to interpret it as an eloquent silence.
Thanks to all for the links and article reprints, and especially Chris in NJ for the wonderful Atlantic Monthly article.
Anne, I like the Bush Theatre idea.

To Anne (welcome back!), Melissa, Bonnie--and everyone else:

I realize that the GB is an international event, and I am certainly not out to discourage the support of theatre (wherever one finds it). I did mean to present the option of contributions in our own back yard(s). However, since this contribution is a GB project (I'm not certain I realized that, initially), please accept my apologies. Truly, I didn't mean to spoil the festivities.

Of course, if anyone does want that list of regional theatres in their area....

A personal note to those of you to whom I owe e-mail: another week and I'll be out from under here. I promise a full report as soon as possible.

I can understand and I agree with Delia that there are many deserving local theatres which should receive our support. In fact, I do support several in the DC area. I was checking the Bush Theatre, which is also near and dear to Mr. Rickman's heart. Their address is :Bush Theatre, Shepherds Bush Green, London, W12 8 QD, and their 'phone number is (from the US,) 011-44-181-743-3388. If the good folks on this page wish to donate to this theatre, I can call the Bush theatre and see if I can arrange a similar set-up, where we can donate as a group, so the money gets pooled regardless of source. It would be a great way to celebrate the anniversary of this page and Mr. Rickman's birthday. I, for one will be happy to donate to this theatre also. If anyone wants me to contact The Bush Theatre and pursue this line of enquiry, or if you have strong feelings against such an idea, E-mail me. Anne

Thank you, Kari, for the tip! I had a little trouble getting to it, so I tried getting to the page from the main page. Try the productions page again by clicking on the link here. I think it's because it was missing the final htm in the address. If you still have problems, just go to the main page and scroll down to click on productions.

Oy, so much to say - OK here goes. Tonight on Bravo 9:30 EST "At the Angelika," don't know if it's the one with Alan on it, but I'm hoping it is.

I've been giving the charity contributions some thought and here's my two cents. I applaud Delia's message and feel local community theatres/charities should be supported. I'm sure that many of the contributors to the GB also contribute to their own pet charities/causes, I know I do. My understanding is that the contributions to the Almeida were to celebrate the anniversary of the GB and to pick a cause that is near to AR's heart. I, therefore feel it would be nice to either continue giving funds to the Almeida or as Mandy suggested the Bush Theatre. Of course, all contributions are strictly voluntary and no pressure should be put on anyone to do something they are not comfortable doing.

I recently wrote to AR and asked him to send an autographed picture to a friend of mine as a birthday present. I received a lovely note from Melanie Parker of ICM ("for and on behalf of Alan Rickman") and an autographed picture of him. She apologized for missing my friend's birthday and included a picture for me even though I hadn't asked for one! BTW, it's the 'sneer" picture from Karina's photo page and it's signed in a silver pen and it IS his signature. The address is listed on Karina's homepage. I wrote in late Dec. and received an answer last Sat.

I thoroughly enjoy the international 'flavor' of this group and it's wonderful harmony. Reading it each day is something I always look forward to and hope to continue doing for a long time to come!

Re: Almeida. The '97 donation was lovely and heartfelt. It arose spontaneously and enthusiastically on this page. Those of us who were here and remember may well choose to honor Karina, Alan Rickman, and our own history by keeping up contributions (if we can) and the personal ties that some of us have established since then with the Almeida. Loyalty to friends is a Rickman quality. -- It ought to go without saying that this was, and is, entirely voluntary. The issue of "local vs. foreign" contributing is beside the point. We chose to make this particular donation, possibly in addition to whatever local benefactions we also made. Very likely others might choose differently--but that does not invalidate our actions in 1997 or subsequently.

OK - here we go. Excerpts from review of TWG from today's Globe and Mail (crossing my fingers here as I've never attempted any form of HTML punctuation before - but relying on Karina's notes):)

Among all the formulaic, feel-good movies released in the post-Christmas season, there's not likely to be one more entertainingly written and exquisitely acted than The Winter Guest. Never sentimental, this visually arresting film explores the most fundamental passages of the human heart with wit and sensitivity. It is the sort of touching parable of foregiveness and reconciliation that stirs an audience's deepest emotions. ......this film adapation (of the play) by Alan Rickman is rendered more potent by the natural intimacy of the film's two stars....it is unlikely that they've ever been able to inform their roles so completely with the nuances that their relationship in TWG affords them. (Some story line follows.)

Thompson has the more difficult and less rewarding role here because it is essentially a reactive one......Frances and Elspeth reach a sort of graceful detente with their demons and with each other........

To his directorial debut Rickman brings an unusual depth and understanding of the material, due in part to the fact that he commissioned the play and directed its first staging. Understandably, he is a little intoxicated with the power of the camera to magnify the changing moods of the emotional landscape, but the results are equally intoxicating for the audience. Together with the cinematographer and art director he creates a gorgeous, topographical tapestry from the wintry setting so that the landscape itself becomes a character.

The Winter Guest is a Channel Four film...it's the kind if indigenous film that, like the best of British television, only seems to get started with public money.

TARTS - it's at the Carlton from today. When shall we go? E-mail me privately.

Hallo Donna, it was a while ago that I wrote to AR. The first letter was in January 1996, the second in January 1997. I will, though, write another one soon. This time my request is so big I have doubts it's such a good idea, after all. But you never know ... The point is that I'm a writer and my latest novel has been highly inspired by HIS acting (it's a crime novel with a Detective Inspector who is an amalgam of AR's most interesting characters). I thought he might like to have a look at the manuscript. I hope he'll not feel bothered. I'm still working at the right words for my accompanying letter - it's not easy to attract the attention of such a busy man whilst avoiding to be a nuicance. Any encouragements (or discouragements) are very welcome.

I adore Mr. Rickman! He has such extraordinary talent and range! One of my favorite movies of all time is Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. (I know, it's not a very deep, moving movie that makes a statement, but I love it!) In fact, I know the entire script! My sister knows most of it, and every once in a while we'll act out scenes. Stupid, huh? But oh well...it's fun. She even brags about me to people, saying what a good imitation I do of Alan Rickman! (Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?)Of course, I'm always the sheriff! Gosh, that's so embarrassing! I hope this doesn't get posted for all the world to see! We (my sister & I) also really loved Sense & Sensibility! Rasputin was a neat one, too, but my family though it was a bit "dark." Anyway, basically I really love Mr. Rickman and his movies! As long as he keeps on makin' 'em, I'll keep watching!

I wholeheartedly agree that we need to support our local arts organizations, but the argument for contributing as well to the Almeida (or ?...Mandy is our on-the-scene expert here) is that it's a project we can participate in collectively from wherever in the world we live. It was initially conceived as a way to mark the date of Karina's launch of the page, but works just as well as a Rickman birthday gift. In any case, I'd hate to see any coercive or sanctimonious flavors creep into it. We can drop the whole idea right now.

Wait a minute. I'm confused. Last night someone told me that Mesmer was going to be on one of the movie channels next month but I said there was some problem with us getting this movie here in the States. Now Andrea from NY says she watched it. Please let me know, IS this movie available here? Is it going to be on one of the movie channels? As a side note, I have long been an admirer of Ciaran Hinds and have often wondered why no one has thought to cast the two of them (AR and Ciaran) in something together. Thanks, Rickmaniacs :)

Thanks to Delia & Valerie for responding to my query -- I had a sneaking suspicion it had to do with marketing. Although why they couldn't have used Ciaran Hinds in full naval uniform is beyond me. But then, I'm not really a Ciaran fan except for Persuasion so maybe it does make sense after all. As for Almeida donations -- I like the idea of contributing there because we do have a history. However, I became a subscriber for the first time this year to the Shakespeare Theater here in DC and berated myself for spending so much money -- but its been worth every penny. So Almeida or regional, I'll abide by the majority opinion.

To BC: I own two copies of Persuasion, both covers. I believe Delia(?) hit the nail on the head. One is more provocative to capture attention to the passer-by. Ciaran Hinds is another actor who uses his whole body to convey a message.

Delia, Thanks for your comments - always thoughtful and informative. As a long-time supporter of the Almeida ,I must admit to (selfishly) being slightly vexed by its huge success. It is a small auditorium and has become increasingly difficult to get tickets and it is particularly noticable that seats seem to be filled with parties who seem to have no interest in the theatre except as a place to be seen (I've got the t-shirt mentality). I know this sounds incredibly churlish but as you say - there must be hundreds, if not thousands of local theatres in the States that could do with support. Failing that there is always the Bush theatre in Shepards Bush in London which is obviously equally dear to Mr Rickman's heart having so recently done a benefit for them and quite frankly they are far more in need of support than the Almeida. Bottom line is always do as you see fit and ignore the churlish rantings of the aggrieved.

Dear Christine, Thanks for your note, I could not e-mail you, so pardon for answering here. When did you send your letters? I sent mine when AR was filming, editing and marketing TWG, and also when his mama died, so I think I might have had bad timing. Also he had an assistant vacate the position. Have you written recently and gotten a response? I may try again if that is the case. My only fantasies are about chocolate and pepperoni pizza, so there is no reason to throw my letters out due to content! It was sweet of you to respond. Thanks. Donna

I too will be happy to send another donation to the Almeida Theatre. I think it is a very worthwhile cause. I found Breda Daly to be an absolute delight when I met her in October, very thoughtful and absolutely delighted with the response from this guestbook. As of October the great folks who contribute so much to this site had given over 2,300.00 pounds to the Almeida. If Karina would re-activate the donation page we could give Mr. Rickman a great birthday present this way. We are already patrons of the theatre, due to the amount we raised. Let's extend that patronage again! Anne

Say CHEESE! It *is* possible to work with someone closely over a long period of time without becoming pregnant by them. Even in this business.

As for the music and art used on vids--sometimes the actual music from the film is unavailable for the trailer and the trailer is then bedded with music in a similar style or period. Happens ALL the time. Unfortunately, when the film's score is available, it's not cost efficient to go back and re-track the trailer. So....

I can't explain the art except to say, as with many videos, the releasing company uses whatever they think will draw people to it on the shelf. I've seen many videos on which the art was skewed.

And a question for Melissa, etal re: The Almeida. With no disrespect to Rickman, or the Almeida, or any of the GBs--wouldn't it make more sense to support theatre in your own area? There are PLENTY of American theatres struggling to keep their doors open--theatres that produce wonderful theatre, but who aren't a name brand (or don't feature the star power)...and they need the support.

I'll be happy to collate a list of regional theatres for anyone who'd like to supporta regional American theatre.

Should I duck and cover *now* or wait?

This is off-topic, but I'm curious about something and wonder if any of you can explain. Last night I rented Persuasion, starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. I'd seen it before, so I knew what the cast looked like. However, the actors depicted on the video box are definitely not Root & Hinds. And the pose is too sensual for this film. In fact, I believe the actress on the box is actually the person who played Annabelle in . Why would this happen? Its the only time I've ever seen a video cover with the wrong actors depicted. And to make matters worse, the trailer for S&S was included, but with the music from Little Women. This one of those niggling things that really annoys me . . .

I don't know if I'm alone on this one, but I think Mr. Rickman would play a superb Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. He sings pretty decently (if anyone noticed in Truly, Madly, Deeply) and he would have just the right mixture of good-guy,bad-guy to make the role his own as he does with all his performances. Ever since I saw him in TMD, I thought he would be great in the role. I,for one,am not interested in Mr. Rickman's genitalia. I'm more interested in the talent lying beneath the skin. I would also love to see him in Taming of the Shrew for the same reason as My Fair Lady. Hopefully, I can take a few minutes out on Wednesdays and join the frenzied chatroom of the Rickmaniacs

Debora, I think the Academy Award nominations are announced February 10. I can't wait! It's so wonderful and cheesy. Then I see ALL the movies so when my friends and I get together on Oscar night we can feel even more self-righteous when the right people don't win! I think the awards are nuts but I keep on watching them. Apart from anything the fashion-critiquing is a laugh. Christine: you're so right, AR is a gent, I sent a request for an autographed photograph a couple of years ago and sure enough a couple of months later there it was. Plenty of actors don't bother to even have a secretary/management reply to say thanks but it's not their policy. Gail: if I read another TWG review without being able to see it I think I'll implode!!!!

I know it's been a while since Donna wrote that she has given up hoping for a reply to her letter to Alan Rickma. In case she's still waiting: Donna, don't despair. I wrote twice. The first time with two questions. Three months later I received an answer by his secretary. Thus encouraged, I sent him three photos with the rather complicated request to autograph and personalize them for three different people (me and two friends who are also admirers). Again, I had to wait for three months, but then I held them in my hands, signed according to my request. I was sooooo moved. AR is really very caring with his fans. (Please excuse any strange or wrong sentenses, since I'm German). Oh, by the way, the adress I used to contact AR was: Alan Rickman c/o ICM Oxford House 76 Oxford Street London W1N OAX England Christine

Hi, everybody. I've been enjoying the fan page and guestbook for a year now and it's about time to thank you all for your wonderful entries and your gorgeous sense of humour. Most of all I like to read about personal encounters with AR. I'm very pleased to learn that he's charming and charismatic and looks even better in real life than in his films. Dear Jean in Leeds, PLease write to me at the E-mail address shown. I really must thank you for the wonderful gift you sent, but the E-mails I've written just keep bouncing back at me. I want to thank all the DC Rickmaniacs, and of course Jean for all the gifts and mailings. Noel, bless you for the TWG soundtrack, It's so wonderful! I think I'll be up to sitting through the film soon, so any local Rickmaniacs who have seen TWG and want to see it again let me know. I would dearly love to see it before it vanishes from the local area. Are we sure AR "bares all" for 'Dark Harbour'? Oh my! Thank goodness I have still have my fan from the tea-party. I have a feeling it's going to get a lot of use if the rumour is true. Anne

Is Ebert's star system out of 4 or 5. A bizarre review: he wrote about it beautifully, and then in the last sentence said it "left him feeling hollow, maybe it was supposed to?" and only gave it two and a half stars. He had already explained it was a piece concerned with feelings and emotions rather than narrative, and then seemed to penalise because of it. It reminds me of a interview I have (thankyou Suzanne) with AR and a Canadian radio announcer, when they were discussing 'Tango at the end of winter'. AR said that he would like an audience to rethink their definition of play (in this case - film) and allow themselves to react in the way they may to a song or a picture. Oh god, I can't wait to see it!

The Jan. 26 issue of The Guardian has an article on the Almeida--mentioning scads of actors, artistic directors Kent and McDiarmid, but not AR. Interesting, though. "One of the most internationally famous theatres in the country"--someone ought to write to the Guardian and tell it just how internationally famous . . . .

I assume the article is online, but if you need it, I can e-mail it to you.

Re: "Cinema"--Well, there is *still* a show with an AR/TWG interview, since the Sunday show included it, though the Mon. show was different.

Have faith, those who don't have access to TWG yet. I ran across the latest box office figures and TWG increased its viewership by 311% in one week.

I have a question though, that may be best answered by our British posters: Alan was tentatively scheduled to recite portions of Wilde's De Profundis, in London for a one-time-only performance. It will now be performed by Corin Redgrave at the Cottesloe in April. I'm curious as to the change. Has anybody come across any information on this?

Valerie - you are right, Mrs. Brown *is* about Queen Victoria and her relationship, during her widowhood, with her Scottish manservant - which has been a subject of speculation for a long time. Lovely movie with a bunch of the usual British stalwarts in it, filmed at Balmoral (exteriors not interiors I am told) and Osborne House on the Isle of Wight (interiors and exteriors). Anna and Gianna - settle down, settle down! TWG will have to show up sometime - won't it?

Thanks for the "good news" Nancy, that he wasn't on the show.

I got my copy of TWG soundtrack today. I was stunned that Sam Goody had it, but it was the only one. $15.99, but its worth it. Haven't played it yet, but judging by the times, it appears to be rather short. Better than nothing, right?

Just for the record, Noel, Liz Fraser does indeed sing the final track "Take Me With You", which, incidentally, AR wrote the lyrics for--an interesting note that I thought you all would like to know. That's all for now...the soundtrack awaits!

Oh, one more thing, does anybody know anything else about Dark H other than him playing an American lawyer, and his choice of wardrobe, or lack there of it???

Gianna, "Internet undesirables" is a perfect definition of trolls. They're people who post on sites like this for the sole purpose of making mischief (or worse). Renie & Pam, I taped the "Cinema" that was on KQED at 1 a.m. and have just FF'd through it. Two talking heads (male as usual) and lots of clips, but no sign of AR. There may have been a glimpse of TWG and AR may have been mentioned, but he certainly wasn't a guest. So I guess the good news is, you didn't miss anything.

Was AR on that Cinema show last night? It was listed on a PBS network in my TV paper, but I don't get the channel. Suzanne: There is an Anjelika in NYC, but TWG is playing exclusively at the Paris, that's what all the ads say anyway. And Noel: I specifically checked on the music at the end of the film, Michael Kamen did the score, and as for the end song, it was Elizabeth something I believe, perhaps Frasier, as you asked. I hadn't heard of her, but I knew MK, and with the film knocking me out as it did, its a wonder I can remember that much. I can't wait to get the soundtrack. Cheers!

Hello! I'm gazing at my pinboard at work - I have a luscious picture (from an old copy of Vanity Fair) of AR in a pose from Les Liaisons Dangereuse. He's lying on a chaise, looking moody and magnificent. I have yet another question as I explore the website: in FAQ "trolls" are mentioned. What do these refer to? Re: The photo of AR holding the bust. It's a full page picture (!!!) in the 8-9-91 issue of Entertainment Weekly. It is accompanied by several other pictures from his various movies (some of which you can also see on Emma's page) and the wonderful article, "Tough Actor to Follow" which Karina has posted on her Article/Interview page.

I, too, saw TWG over the weekend and loved it! :-) I went all the way to downtown Houston (2 1/2 hour drive) where it was playing at the Angelika Film Center. A very nice place with a cafe/restaurant/bar.

Emma! I am extremely embarassed to say that I have only just made it to your Rickmanista Page. Oh why did I wait so long? It's fantastic! And OH!!! that photo of him on the set of TWG in the jeans and anorak is beeaauutiful. I'm thinking of blowing it up and putting it on my sons' bedroom wall in the guise of a 'growth chart' (much better than the giraffe). What a figure for them to aspire to! By the way, while perusing my cable guide for February, I found hidden away at 3 in the morning, 'Fallen Angels - Murder Obliquely" on Showtime. Ahhhhh! Well, its been an eternity since I've posted, and an eternity since I've been here. The past few months have been quite hectic. I miss it, believe me. I just had to come find out what's happening....What is Dark Harbor about, and when is it coming out? I can't believe some of the things you all are reporting....woah. Any date on The Moon and Sixpence?

Anyway, I went to see TWG today...playing at the Paris in NYC, the ONLY place around that's got it, and I've been in a daze. I don't know how I got back to Port Authority from the theatre. The film was absolutely exquisite, so beautiful, I was so moved. The performances were incredible, and we can all agree that the way HE shot it, was beyond belief. I just marvel at it, and am thrilled that the piece is so wondrous, truly a success. I just wish he'd get the recognition he deserves for it. Both the writing and the music were also very affecting, and hopefully I'll find a copy of it somewhere. Also, I'm sure this has been discussed, but someone please verify: that was HIM who bumped into Lily and Chloe on the street while PL was looking through the telescope at the beginning, right?

Anyway, I just had to share my thoughts on the film, with all you out there who understand, and I had to say hello because its been so long. Gilda and Ellen: How are you doing? So sorry I missed the tea back in September. Take care all...

May I echo Sandra's well-said sentiments. TWG was indeed a lovely and moving film. It is one that stays with you long after you see it. Of course it was great to link up with my fellow DC 'maniacs but we missed all those who were unable to attend. All I can say is Heaven help us when it comes out on video! Alexandria, VA USA - Mon Jan 26 10:18:31 EST 1998

Good morning all! Noel, Brynne, Gillian (who is non-computerized) and I went to TWG last night. We are all stunned. We stood on the street afterward, doing a fast and dirty review of it, and realized we couldn't honestly think of anything bad to say about it. AR had fun with this film. I don't mean it's lighthearted (not by any means), but that he played extensively with color, light, texture, timing, point-of-view, all that good stuff! The film feels black and white, with all the ice and snow and the extremely bleak landscape, but AR suddenly gives us tasty morsels of color, suddenly showing us a bluebird painted on a yellow bus, or a girl wrapped in red brocade. The film is highly symbolic: young boys fearfully exploring a dark tunnel, broken picture frames, candles at funerals, ET's bath and especially the boys out on the ice. We were quite drained but not depressed when it ended. Don't miss it if you are near a showing. It's a strong film that I would have enjoyed even without it be shaded by my loyalties!

Regarding the Poe CD: It's called "Closed on Account of Rabies," produced by Hal Wilner, who does odd tribute albums. I saw it in Barnes & Noble Saturday, and the Washington Post reviewed it Jan 14. AR is NOT on it. Chris Walken is, as is Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithful, Gabriel Byrne and one or two others. Looks interesting, costs too much for a novelty CD that one might listen to once. I can send the review if anyone is interested.

"Alan Rickman is to bare the full length of his acting talent in his next movie. The TWG director strips down for full frontal shots in Dark Harbour in which he plays an American attorney. /---/ Rickman says: "I'm afraid the clothes have to come off for that role. The only training I did for that role though was to stop eating. I could star in a comedy like The Full Monty but after my experience the clothes would be staying on."

Hello, Rickmaniacs. I heard a rumor that AR was on a collection of Edgar Allen Poe's works on cd. Does anyone know about this? It's the first time I've heard it so I thought I'd check here since I know this is the place to find the answers. :) Thanks, Katrina

Maxine, I have done everything possible to see it, and I still get the red line across it . . . Yes, Andrea and Michele, those are absolutely five-star examples of hand instances...*especially* Tango.

If anyone missed getting a copy of the huge book "Shakespeare in Performance," mentioned here (with well-deserved praise) many times, I can put you in touch with someone who can get one for you. Drop me a line.

Well, I FINALLY downloaded Internet Explorer 4.0 for free and was able to see that TWG video on the Fine Line Features website. It was really good... it was that "older Jamie" look, with a moustache. Still curious to know if he wore a moustache for Dark Harbor... no further comments on that!

Yo ladies, calm down. Did not mean to come off as being so crabby about the hug thing. I am more concerned with AR's current attitude toward his fandom. It is nice he is so gracious about it all. The reason I felt I must say what I did is that here in Tucson we get a few celebs due to a lot of filming in the area. There is a local bar (pub) known as Club Congress and most celebs drop in there. I have been a regular for about 10 years and I have seen sooo many people act so stupid around some of these people. I have also seen the reverse, celebs who are REAL jerks. I know how excited we can all get about AR. Believe me, I would be lying if I said I wasn't dying to see Dark Harbor and haven't noticed AR hands...

Apologies to all offended.

The Winslow Boy filmed in 1949 A highly moving drama based on a true incident in which an innocent schoolboy was accused of theft and summarily expelled from school. When the case was taken to court, the boy's brilliant defense lawyer unraveled a mysterious and surprising chain of events.

From the Independent: headline Alan Rickman says RSC is wasting young actors' talent. The RSC has been condemned by former star AR for neglecting young talent. Its young actors are "dropping like flies," he claims.
The company has a history of nurturing numerous future stars - from Diana Rigg, Judi Dench and Helen Mirren to Ken Branagh and Ralph Fiennes. Rickman rose to fame with the company's production of LLD before pursuing a film career - he has just directed a film, TWG, starring ET.
In The Stage magazine Rickman says it is a miracle that young talent comes through the RSC system.
He also criticised the company in a talk he gave at the National Film Theatre. "It's a factory. It's had to be. It's all about product endlessly churned out - not sufficiently about process," he said.
"They don't look after the young actors... People are dropping like flies, doing too many shows at once. There ought to be someone who helps them develop." He went on to express unsought sympathy for the RSC's artistic director Adrian Noble: "I remember when Noble was a young, fresh talent. Now he's weighed down by running buildings and financial concerns."
... An RSC spokesman said Rickman was "out of touch...AR's premise is entirely false. Over the years, the RSC has had a marvellous record at moving on talent. Nearly all of the great artists on stage and sometimes in film - I'd include AR in that - have been through that 'factory' that is the RSC. It's not an accusation that holds well. It's fashionable to take that line, but it's patently untrue."
(My daughter bought the Stage of 22.1.98 but it was not in.)
From the letters page in Independent Saturday 24.1.98
Rickman says sorry
I should know better than to be led into a discussion of contentious issues where there is the possibility of its being reported ("AR says RSC is wasting young actors' talent, 21 January).
I have nothing but admiration and support for Adrian Noble, and know only too well of my debt to the RSC. I was merely trying to point out the strained connection between continual underfunding and real artistic freedom. I was also talking mainly about a period of time which takes no account of recent major Actor Development programmes within the company.
The NFT session was held before the latest round of cuts to the arts. I can only apologise for my lousy timing. ALAN RICKMAN, London W1

Re: Alfre Woodard's hug, Joy, I only said I envied it, which I think is a reasonable statement. I wasn't planning on ever accosting Alan. However, the hug did strike me as the kind one gives to a friend. I'm still curious as to whether they know each other and, if so, how.

I don't think this has been mention (if it has sorry), but Die Hard is being shown on USA at 8:00 EST on Saturday. Re: His hands. (Apologies to those who have heard this all before..."Forgive me, forgive me.") Besides what's been mentioned (and I've not had the pleasure of a handshake myself), it's what he does with them--He uses his hands in delightful and pointed ways in both the characters he inhabits and in his own storytelling. There is not a wasted movement. Watch any (watch all!) of his films and look at his handiwork (sorry!) the way he crumples the blankets in TMD, or runs his thumb along the cracks of the wood floor, the way he grips and handles the back of a chair in S&S ("No, I must go further back...") or MC, the way he pulls on a bit of leaf from a hedge walking in a garden in Mesmer, the way he admires a car with his hands in CME, the way Rasputin grabs the cabinet, the way he walks his hands along the panelling in Mesmer and S&S, the way his hand dallies on a doorknob in MO . . . He is very aware of his hands, and I'm not a painter or visual artist, but I imagine that as an artist, he is doubly aware of his hands. For those of us who are (ahem) interested in his hands, they merit very close attention indeed . . .

Umm--think I'll have to get back next door after all...

Oh, Good Lord, let me clarify about that "manipulating" comment: I DID NOT play with the logo itself (infringing on Alan's artowork). What I meant to say by manipulating was that I pulled out from the poster, added background color to match the background and added a drop shadow to it to give it some depth. Whew! Hello! I'm a friend of Gail - another member of TARTS. Gail put me wise to this guest book and it's been great fun reading all the news regarding AR. Here's a cute AR story: A few summers ago, just before "Mesmer" was released, I was at work and a friend of mine who had taken the day off telephoned me and enigmatically asked "Guess who I met today on Centre Island?" [Centre Island is a park-like island just of Toronto's harbour - very nice] I had no idea and insisted she tell me and she YELLED down the phone "ALAN RICKMAN!!! ARGGHHH!!" The story was that she was out with her friend and her friend's children and they spotted AR at a distance. She was sure it was him and approached him - very discreetly - and said: "Excuse me, aren't you Alan Rickman?" He replied "Yes" very slowly. She continued "I have a friend [yours truly] who's just your biggest fan. She'll be thrilled to know you in Toronto. Are you visiting?" He told her that he was en route to the Montreal Film Festival (where Mesmer was about to be shown) and he was visiting his friends and little god-daughter in Toronto. Well, my friend wished him well with the film and said goodbye, not before getting a picture of him!! You can imagine my squeals of horror and delight at sitting there at work when my friend was galavanting all over Centre Island running into people like Alan Rickman. Anyway, she said he was very polite but also a little grumpy - I imagine in that sexy way he has of being surly. By the way WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH HIS HANDS? Everyone keeps mentioning them...

FYI: I added a couple of more plays to my site (Rickman in the Round), in case any of you are interested... There are some things that aren't working yet and other items that need to be added to the pages I loaded (more reviews for Troilus, for example), so I hope you'll bear with me. I was actually quite happy with the Antonio page: It came out the way I envisioned it! Amazing! I did quite a bit of manipulating on the logo AR did, created the "J" drop cap from the logo myself, and cloned in the right side of the poster that was obstructed in Maureen Paton's photo section of the AR bio. Of course, my price to pay now is to figure out why the Mephisto background looks so crappy now! Hope you like! (Emma, I have recipes coming to you this weekend).

On another note: does anyone know anything about Dark Harbour? A colleague of mine (not a fan) found an interesting snippet about it in the WENN news: "Alan Rickman is to bare the full length of his acting talent in his next movie. The TWG director strips down for full frontal shots in Dark Harbour in which he plays an American attorney. /---/ Rickman says: "I'm afraid the clothes have to come off for that role. The only training I did for that role though was to stop eating. I could star in a comedy like The Full Monty but after my experience the clothes would be staying on."" Any comments???

Joy: Pleeaazze...lighten up already! You almost sound resentful that AR has attracted so many more fans and become so popular! (Wanted to keep him all to yourself did'ya? Hmmm?) We're just having some "fun" with the GG hug and fantasizing in our own ways. It surely doesn't mean we would accost the man if we ever were to meet. It seems to me his legions of admirers at the book signing in NYC a while ago did an admirable job of containing their "hysteria" and "libido" when they not only saw AR, but spoke to him and had photos taken with him. Not one of our "sisters" embarrassed herself, so I really don't think you have to lose any sleep over any one of us losing her self control should the aforementioned scenario present itself. I've watched many an award show and I can honestly say I have never seen a presenter give such an enthusiastic HUG to anyone before. Oh, to have been Alfre at that moment. I would just like to address all the comments on the hug.

People pleeaase. It was a "I'm really glad you won" hug which turned into a "its so exciting you won hug". I also hope that no insists upon a hug of their own if they are fortunate enough to run into AR. Would you like it if some man you didn't know came up and demanded a hug from you?

It seems to me that AR is becoming more popular and collecting more fans these days. I would not want him to lose his gracious attitude towards some of his pushy-er fans. He seems to be a rather dignified man with a wonderful sense of humor. Let's not ruin it for him or us.

Delia: Was wondering from something you said in one of your notes if you attended the GG's or the parties? And got to see AR in person? It must be interesting and fun working in the "biz." The GG's and parties (from the segments I saw) look like they must be a fun time, especially for "stars" to get to meet some of their favorite actors. Well, I finally saw TMD yesterday, and what can I say? It was beautiful, funny, sad. And the film was a wonderful visual experience. Hello to the GB, I back to read this great page after many days of illness(again!!!).....My God, such a mountain of msgs to see!!!........Anyway, yesterday, finally I saw"RASPUTIN".........Simply SUPERB!!!!!!The only negative point is that the movie is too short(made for HBO, so...), Alan is so fascinating(maybe too fascinating if compared to the real Rasputin), even without his voice(in Italy we use the dubbing......), I can't imagine how he can be with his hypnotising whispers.........It's the first time I love the figure of that dark Russian mystery........I'd like to know your opinion, I'm still enthusiast!!!!TWG opened few weeks ago, and the results are pretty good......But I don't think there will be anything for the next Oscars.......Raffaella, Emma Thompson e' incinta?Ma dove l'hai letto?Ti scrivo presto.....See you sooner!!!!!!!BYE!!!!! Take care, LUV CIAO Debora XXXX PS:If you wanna talk to me thru ICQ, this is my UIN 4290688

Fiona: Thanks so much for sharing your memory of meeting AR. It was absolutely delightful...I had to chuckle at your reactions! It was a perfect description of exactly how I would have felt upon seeing him and shaking his hand. You are so lucky to have had a photo taken with him! Wouldn't you all have loved to be Alfre Woodard at the GGs? What a warm, loving and lengthy embrace she did receive! That hug alone is worth a hundred trophies!

I have often browsed through this site and read all the comments in the guest book but never contributed. Now I will, I don't know why I haven't before...just afraid of HTML I guess. I met AR at the Edinburough festival in '91. I saw him in Tango at the End of Winter and afterwards I waited for him with a small group of people (strangers) outside the stage door. It was an afternoon performance and one of the actors who emerged from the building informed us, very politely, that Mr Rickman was taking a nap. Luckily for us, there was a very persistent american lady with us who, very politely, asked the young actor if he could go back inside and urge Mr Rickman to come out just for a few moments. And he did. He looked great in just khaki pants, a t-shirt and reebox sneakers. I remember the sneakers because a group of 3 young girls (about 16 or so) took a picture of his shoes. He was quite surprised, as were we, that they would take a picture of ordinary runners. They must have had thier reasons. AR was very nice. He signed all our programs and patiently cuddled up to us for pictures. I was the last to get my few secs with him. I handed him my program and while he was signing it, I told him that I thought his performance in The January Man was wonderful. (I commented on that movie because it was one of my favorites but had not had great commercial success and I foolishly thought he may be impressed that I had seen him in a somewhat obscure film. If he was, he didn't show it.) AR replied with a throaty, "thank-you" and handed me back my program. My words were failing me, but luckily my Mother (who is not a fan) asked him if he would have his pic taken with me. He said, "of course," and then snuggled up to me. I don't know how I remained standing. I just had to touch him so, after my Mum had taken the pic, I thrust out my hand and said, "thank-you very much." He took my hand and shook it. His hand felt so smooth and warm. He had a firm hand shake. Then he smiled. And that is when I felt my legs giving way. I wanted to say something witty or at least coherent but felt that I would not manage it. So I smiled and turned away and then got out of there before I embarassed myself. I still have the picture. I won't lose that baby. It was good to share that memory with all of you. At least you all will appreciate it - something my friends never could. Oh, and the play was fab. Alan was wonderful but I was quite annoyed when he died, yet again. He rarely lives, it seems.

I heard the same thing about Emma Thompson over at the Pemberley---and apparently, it is true, she is expecting a baby. But, I have no details as to when....etc. And does anyone really believe that Titanic is worthy of all the awards it is getting now and in the future. I, for one, do not....I have seen other films that were much better. The only thing special about Titanic were the special effects. Kate Winslet did a fine acting job, as did Gloria Stuart...but should it be in the running for the best film of the year? I don't think so....

Hi everyone - I'm working late again!! Sadly there has been no coverage of the GG in the UK and as for Barry Newman (or Norman, often referred to as other names), I'm not speaking to him after his review of TWG!! Clare, thanks for your call, I'll persevere with the loading instructions and see what happens (p.s. the noodles were well and truly soggy after we had finished speaking!!). Mandy, sorry to use this as a mail box. Tried calling you yesterday, thanks so much for the pressie - it is much appreciated. Will try and ring you tomorrow, but I know that you have lots happening. I often download this page and FOF to occupy me during long train journeys each day. Can I just say how entertaining it is and great R&R. Thanks so much!!

I was looking forward to reading all the entries about the GGs. To put in my 2 cents', I thought he looked a tad scruffy -- and somewhat unhappy during that quick shot on the Joan Rivers disaster. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if he does avoid her at all costs. And it did look to me as if he knew Alfre Woodard, but I can't make any connection. Any ideas? I was really envious of that hug! I'm not a fan of award shows, so I waited patiently until he had presented -- then I opted for S&S. Sigh . . .

I didn't see "As Good as It Gets" yet, but I do plan to (everyone should go see "Good Will Hunting"--fabulous film, and wasn't Alan supposed to be in it? as the math professor?? not as Roin William's character, I suppose). However, Debbie, I think Nicholson's comment about Christine Lahti doing "number 2" was what turned people off. That was a joke as well, but I think he went over the line with that one. I also wanted to swipe that gum right out of his mouth, but then that's Jaaaack!

Hi guys. Re Jack Nicholson at the GG's -- I didn't see it for myself (stopped watching after our boy was on,) so I don't know what he *sounded* like, but I do know that with regard to the bag, JN was doing an impression of his character in "As Good As It Gets". He plays an obsessive-compulsive man obsessed with cleanliness. It was a joke.

I loved the music in the film and thought the last song was beautiful... waiting until the credits were over to hear it. Now that I know it is his song, I do want to get the soundtrack. BTW, if anybody gets Access Hollywood (shows here in the middle of the night), you might try to see if they have Alan on that. They caught him quickly twice, for the Emmys two years ago.
Maxine <mrose@pawneenet.comfoo>
Greeley, CO USA - Mon Jan 19 21:56:11 EST 1998

I wish I'd known when I saw TWG Saturday that Alan wrote the lyrics for the closing song. I would have paid more attention. I couldn't remember what the music sounded like, but bought the soundtrack this evening anyway. I like the music, although all the tracks sound alike. Unfortunately, the insert doesn't include the words to the song Alan wrote, and I can't understand much of what's sung. I'd like to know what he wrote. I can understand the part about "take me with you." Alan, I'd be happy to take you anywhere you want to go!

For those still planning to see TWG in DC, I suggest you get there early. We tried for the 4:40 show, but it sold out early. When we entered for the 7:10 show we learned why -- the theater is tiny, so it doesn't seat very many people. The good news is we killed the time in between showings by hitting Borders where I was able to buy Hello, Frank, and Backstage West. And when we got back to the theater we were standing in line in front of a guy with a delightful British accent! I kept working to keep the conversation going just so I could hear him talk.

Well, after looking forward to the GGs all day yesterday, Alan's part was over too quickly. Susan, I'm afraid I don't agree about Alan looking "snaggle-toothed and scruffy" -- I thought he looked great! Left me longing for more. I also thought he sounded more poised than many of the other presenters. As for the award recipients, I've never heard so many ineloquent speeches in my life! What was wrong with those people? I think it was a toss up who was more sloshed -- Jack Nicholson or Burt Reynolds.

Julia, yes Alan's copresenter last night, Jada Pinkett Smith, did present Alan with his GG last year. Renie, I think that answers your question about why he was paired with her this year. Alan's other presenter last year was Gary Sinise. I was hoping Gary would win the category Alan was presenting last night just to bring it all full circle (the three of them together again!). But if he had we would have missed one of the most memorable moments of the evening. Julia, I also wondered how Alan knows Alfre Woodard. I certainly envied that hug she got!

Received both Rasputin and Mesmer in the mail last week. Finally saw RasPOOtin yesterday. Wow! So many great moments...

"They say you are an imbecile." ... "Is the pain gone?" ... "First we must sin." ... "Kiss me."

...His eyes--after he's fallen to the floor while dancing, looking up at the woman seated at the table. His eyes--seeing visions. His eyes--frightened. His eyes--comforting.

Can't wait to see it again. But, I must see Mesmer first. So much to do ...

Well, I'm feeling cheated now. I watched GG last night, and AR was on very briefly. Cut back from the adverts and he was standing at the podium next to the woman, and mostly just heard his voice. He looked uncomfortable, embarrassed, and as though he was squinting to read the auto-cue. I must have a word with whoever edited it for NZ TV!

Yes, my lucky socks paid off! Sitting in front of the Tv screen, biting my nails, when HE walked on. And wasn't that the same girl that presented him his Rasputin award last year? And, how does he know Alfre Woodard? All those horoscopes said this was going to be a good year! And AABA on last night, too. And all on the day before my exams! Oh, how sweet it is! (one of my friends suggested I should say "so, who Missed the GG's last nite? Nyah, Nyah!" but note how I didn't! :)) LaLaLa. Now I will go and watch my tape of QDU and AABA. Oh, when I was watching the hosts introduce AABA, one of them said that the screenwriter also wrote the script for the Beatles' Help!, so I guess this is really a kind of closure for me, being a fan and all!

PA, anyone? Thanks for the GG time log, Maxine, I knew not to leave during the commercial break at the half hour. Looked wonderful walking out on stage. In black. He did look pretty funny next to the very short woman (from Scream 2? sheesh--were they going for the "young and old" combo? Tall and small? Anyway, after squinting and making a couple of facial expressions, AR announced winner Alfre Woodard (sp?) with a genuine smile, and hugged her (nice hug!) until his left foot went in the air. Then they showed AR during the "I'll give my Golden Globe to Jack Lemmon" speech (he was smiling.) Which means that this morning's recaps showed him off to the right. I didn't ever see him sitting. Were there any pre-show chats with him on cable stations? Or just the shot of he and Judy walking in?

I am humbled before the collective and international intelligence. As for the GG's, I thought he looked a bit snaggle-toothed and scruffy, although nonetheless appealing. For Delia-- I don't envy you in LA LA land with this collection of nitwits!! If I shaved my four-year-old's head and put some funky glasses on him he could have done a good Jack Nicholson. For anyone on the west coast... Alan presented with Jada Pinkett Smith, almost half his size... and it started maybe 35 minutes or so after the start of the program. They will announce him as an actor and director of the Winter Guest... he looks wonderful! Also anybody watching any rerun of the 2 hour preshow on E!, they showed that quickie of him with Judy Hofflund about :53 or :54 into the first hour. A quick shot and then hold for a few seconds into Melissa River's interview, as he's in the background. This is like a detective story! Wonder if he'll be on the post show or in the audience now that he's presented.

Jean, what station is this S&S behind the scenes going to be on? Just available in England? Anyway, I look forward to seeing AR presenting tonight. I drove down to Denver (only 60 miles, that is okay... was listening to ROTN on the way--incredible!) to see The Winter Guest. When the movie started, I just let myself drift into it. It was a wonderful experience... it was so beautiful. And I have my definite vote that it was AR who bumped into those old women... the face reminded me of the way he looked in the not so handsome scenes of AABA. It was wonderful to know that he was in every scene even if he couldn't be seen... I felt like he was just around the corner (since basically he was)... and boy did that add a lot for me. I thought it was a precious movie and wish it was closer so I could see it once a week til it leaves. I haven't had a chance to check the other comments on the GB, but I give thumbs "way up" and my thanks for a wonderful, beautiful experience!

Kel,
"Neil Jordan lightens his burden, saving him from blame and accusation, making him into a type of Robyn Hood. Military actions are planned and carried out in a spirit of adventure; they evolve easily from underground to goverment; Eamon De Valera's attitudes -- first president of the underground republican goverment (played in a crowning performance, by the way, by Alan Rickman known for "Machiavellan grimaces")-- are ridiculed; the repression of rebels is started for the sake of the State; the search for peace is a patriotic gesture of the hero who losses his life trying."

Translation, please.

I apologise for this being off-topic but it might be of interest - Masterpiece Theatre are far away from period stuff in their latest offering, which has already been shown in Canada on a different channel. 'Reckless' is a terrific story of our times in which Francesca Annis, the 50 something main squeeze of Ralph Fiennes, plays a senior surgeon's wife who falls for his junior - some 20 years *her* junior.Art imitating life, so to speak. I know that both we and our VCRs will be glued to the Golden Globes tomorrow night, which is the first time the Buffalo PBS airs it, but set your VCRs for the replay - here it is at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Just found out you can order Anthony Minghella's screenplay for TMD from the Amazon online bookstore (www.amazon.com). Also listed are two soon-to-be-published books by AR and Sharman MacDonald: "The Winter Guest" and the "Winter Guest: Screenplay." They have different ISBN's so they must be different books. Obviously one's the screenplay from the film; is this the one he was signing at Borders, M7? But then what's the other book?
Susan, I spotted a couple of minor grammatical errors in the letter too. It can happen to anyone! But "Fine Line have," in case you tagged that one, is OK; the British use plural verbs for companies and other groups; e.g., "The BBC are showing ..." Right, Claire & others?
TMD and pedantically yours,
Nancy R.

I thought AR didn't do commercial voice overs .. so why would he start on one for furniture? Doesn't sound very exciting.
Right so what product voice over would you have him do given the choice. If you make it general, those of us without access to American TV can join in too!!

Bonnie, Anthony Minghella can be contacted through several sources. One is Methuen Drama Reed Consumer Books Ltd. Michelin House 81 Fulham RoadLondon SW3 6RB.

Another is through Jim Henson Productions. Minghella wrote a series of Celtic fairy tales that was produced by them. (The series is currently showing on cable.) The Henson production offices are located in Los Angeles.

Another would be to contact the BBC. Since he's made both films and radio plays for them, they'd be able to forward a letter to him or his agent.

Whoa, there, Stezi, not so fast! Maxine sounds like she's one of The Plug-in-less People! Browsers without proper plug-ins can't save *anything* because nothing comes up.

Maxine, go to the video page itself. Then try to see or download or save - whatever - a clip. If the picture of a plug-in within a circle with a stripe thru it comes up (much like those warning signs in elevators not to smoke - a cigarette with a stripe thru it), you've got to find the plug-in(s) you're missing. You'll be linked to the plug-in page right then and there if you want to proceed.

I, too, was one of the Plug-in-less People, until I launched Netscape and was gifted with plug-ins from a fellow GB poster. That was the only way I could get the page working. Nothing else worked.

Maxine, the contact at Fine Line is Nevin. I was in contact with him when I had my frustrations with the page. He's eager to help, but, to my mind, not a webmaster. If all else fails, tell him what's happening. Maybe he'll have advice. If you find that he's of no help, contact me and I'll give you specs as to how I rectified my set-up.

BC, re: your comments on the TWG reviews in the Washington Post, now that I've seen them I understand your reaction. The "Weekend" review was written by Desson Howe, who never seems to like much of anything (and who I seldom, if ever, agree with). The "Style" review was written by Stephen Hunter, my favorite Post reviewer. This guy has done a number of very well written reviews.

To Nele and Stezi, I'm pleased you both get to see some AR movies you haven't seen yet. You have some treats in store. Especially TMD, which I think is AR's best movie. Enjoy!

Winter Guest will show in one theater in the Miami area, one near Ft. Lauderdale and one in Boca Raton, just south of Palm Beach. Which means, basically, 3 theatres in all of South Florida. And the Miami Herald ripped it to shreds.

I've just spotted a letter from Alan Rickman, W1, in this weeks Time Out.

"I have to correct some misapprehensions in Steve Grant's article 'A Winter's Tale' in TO 1429.

Firstly, it was not me but Roger Spottiswoode who visited Dennis Potter before his death.

Secondly, the changes requested by Fine Line Features in TWG were for the always-edited airline and network TV versions. At all times, Fine Line have been generous and imaginative in their support for the film. Indeed, they were the first people to back a difficult project.

It all makes the years old quote of mine which Grant used -'all profits and no risk'- sound very inaccurate and outdated."

Alan didn't appear on "Rough Cut" tonight. :-( But the host did say, "Next week,...discovered the joys and pains of being a first time director." So, maybe he'll be on next week......

But on a brighter note, perhaps it is the Angelika Alan spoke of at the NFI Lecture. For he did an interview there which was on a show I mentioned in an earlier post called "At the Angelika." The episode he was on appeared on Bravo. And also on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) two days ago! His segment was first and lasted about 5 minutes. It's scheduled to come on IFC again tomorrow (Friday) at 3:45 p.m., Saturday at 9:40 p.m. and Monday at 4:00 p.m. Al times Eastern. Hope these are the right episodes. :-)

Here's what the IFC web-site says about "At the Angelika":
Taped at Manhattan's Angelika Theater Center, the showcase for independent film in New York, this original series from Bravo's sister network, The Independent Film Channel, features interviews with new and established indie filmmakers, previews of upcoming independent films, and behind-the-scenes glimpses at what makes this premier movie theater tick.

An AR Society update:

After reading about the DC Tea Party, M7 at Borders in NY, and the UK Guardian interview (among others), we just couldn't stand being outdone any longer. The members of STARS (Seattle-Twisp) have finally had a meeting!

Today, I met up with Dana (of FOF's PL & Dana) and her daughter Katherine (yes, an AR fan at only 7 years of age...I think her mom had something to do with that!) while they were traveling through Seattle on their way to Olympia (our state's capitol). After talking for months via e-mail, it was fun to finally see each other for REAL over lunch! Of course, we plan to do it again someday (other area fans are welcome!), and are thrilled that now we can add ourselves to the list of "those who have met others from Karina's page"!

The site allows you to enter any question you have and it brings back other websites that might provide an answer. I tried asking a variety of basic questions about our guy and got a variety of responses, although some sites just happen to quote AR's characters. Some responses will lead you right back here or over to KelClancys. I did find one thing that I don't think I've ever seen before. Thanks Karina for an excellent site, I know I shall be a frequent visitor.I have collected areasonable amount on AR so please, anyone e-mail and if I can help add to your collection I will. Bye for now Diane UK

King Rat: It was staged in Bristol and I had the impression at the Guardian interview that it was a Pantomime.
AR said "This is very worrying ...how did you know about that one" to the lighting engineer on the King Rat production who raised the question.

Rough Cut is broadcast at 10:30 EST on TNT, thanks Maxine!

If you want to have some fun and have the time check out www.hsx.com it's a Hollywood based stockmarket site. You're given $2 million play $$ to invest in films & actors. (AR is not currently on the board.) The only one of his movies that is listed is Dogma so far I've made $2,000! An interesting and painless way to learn about the real stock market.

Meridian on Screen is a feature of BBC's short wave programming. You need a shortwave receiver to get it. If you have one go to This Page and it will tell you how to tune in. I don't think it is carried on any of the local stations.

I've been an Alan Rickman fan for quite some time now, and was delighted to find this great website. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my obsession! I have an ever-growing video library of Rickman movies, and just learned, through these pages, about Mesmer being available through Videoflicks. Needless to say, I'm going to check that out. I have a "friend of a friend" connection with Kevin Smith, so if I hear any tidbits regarding Dogma, I'll pass them on. Thanks, Karina, for a wonderful site! :-)

Thanks to Emma and Stezi for the info regarding the Meridian On Screen. Pardon my naivete, but how does one get this? Is it something that's featured on the BBC Web site, and if so, where? Is this a radio program? I found a local NY radio station that might cover it, but I'm not sure what it is. NFI Continued --- audience questions:

Yes I did have my hand up and so did Dianne … but she thought the interviewer was biased towards picking the males.
I would have lowered the general tone of questions anyway, because I wanted to know if he was the man in TWG bumping into the old ladies, since my 'was he coming back to the theatre' one had been answered!

About snowscape for TWG: AR said he hadn't a clue how it was done and we should see him with a word processor! Then talked about D-Rez and their Mulholland Falls work. Snow on the village roof tops all was all put there afterwards.

Any plans to further his singing career: Last year he was asked to do three Broadway musicals. AR then told the Evita story about being dragged kicking and protesting all the way to an American sound studio.… more gesturing about the range of notes.
Would he do a musical? "Why not, but it would have to be about something."
I will admit to thinking about "Tango" at this point!

King Rat. Did it influence his DH and RHPoT performance: Recounted the story of the trap door breaking and children being led away crying .. then said "Every job is itself and all are very different."

Asked how important photography was to him: AR said he does have cameras and likes taking pictures but a lot of that was private. He was too impatient in the darkroom .. more mime actions .. tending not to leave things were they should be for long enough. On the set of TWG, the frames were set up by Seamus but he would always move them a fraction!

Asked which was the most fulfilling acting or directing: He said it was an impossible question. Would he go back to the Almeida: AR said he was happy to work there as it was run by "actors who care about your life there". Said he will be working closely with them.

Training the cat at the beginning of the film: Literally as AR said action, the cat appeared on cue, leaving them open mouthed in disbelief. One of the crew apparently said after the shot "Reset the Cat", but then there was a snow storm so that was the only take available.
Lindsay Duncan said when she saw it that the cat reminded her of her mother, to whom the film is dedicated.

How much control did he have over the final TWG edit: A lot of control, AR then detailed the "Mount Rushmore" and alternative endings scenarios already reported.
However he did also say "the shots (he was) in love with all gone."

The final question was on Mesmer and by this time I had lost the will to hold a pen let alone write, as the answer included a brief "passing the hands" gesture. Fortunately Mandy has that answer covered!

Claire .. thanks Dianne had a fun afternoon collecting the notes!
Sussex, UK - Mon Jan 12 13:43:14 EST 1998

NFI Continued:

AABA: When asked if he was disappointed it didn't do well at the box office, AR said he thought it was a great film and enjoyed working with Mike Newell …" he's bonkers! " People expected another "Four Weddings and a Funeral" especially with Hugh Grant's presence. Thought the film may stand the test of time.

About returning to the Theatre: Yes, he said, there are offers, but only interested "if the risk factor is high enough". Citing "The Chairs" at the Royal Court and the new David Hare play as dangerous writing, exciting and real theatre, as the only kind that attracted him. Also said it was a question of time and spoke about "Hamlet" experience.

Asked whether he wished to act or direct: AR said he had done two films and was about to start Kevin Smith's "Dogma". Said he played an angel who as the voice of God comes down to earth to find two rebellious angels, who have been thrown out of heaven but have found a way back, and are therefore undermining the word of God. Film touches along subjects such as euthanasia, abortion and religion. AR was enthusiastic about the winged special effects and told the Tequilla drinking and spitting story, miming the actions with great gusto!
AR was not keen to direct again unless the right project came along, although there had been offers .. insisting he "was an actor mostly".

Claire …. still writing mostly Dianne's stuff !

And thanks to Claire for linking the Sharman MacDonald interview. I had begun to think this was someone with a truly pathological need to shine her light under a bushel. Finally!

"Council Flat" is a rented flat from the local council or district authority. Local councils "own" housing for rent, although now their proprtion of the UK rental sector market is now far smaller than the time AR would have lived in a council flat.
Being"poor" was not a prerequisite for this type of housing, some just preferred to rent. But if you were poor then invariably you would live in council property!

Claire ... who wasn't poor ... but did live in a council house as a kid!

The Carr article in the Boston Globe is super. You can click on that link to get to it.
A quote from it to whet your appetite:
&quotYou'd know the languid, chiseled, resonant drawl with your eyes closed. It belongs to Alan Rickman, who has managed the difficult feat of remaining a respected British stage presence while launching a Hollywood career based on playing indolently sexy villains who seem amused by evil-doing. Perhaps because he holds strong socialist convictions, and to this day feels a conflict between Hollywood's high-priced glitz and his egalitarian principles, he has not exactly been extroversion incarnate when talking about himself."

NFI Continued:
The next section is where we start covering information already posted by Mandy, so I will only post anything additional, heavily reliant on Dianne's notes now … as the evening progressed AR was more animated using many hand and facial gestures to illustrate the points … so I stopped writing much!

Opportunities at Latymer School: Diversity was encouraged. They regularly did full costume productions of the classics, two acts in one evening say of Shakespeare (he said the play name beginning with C but I can't spell it, neither can Dianne).

About his decision to be a designer: Half of him wanted to act, but being an academic school there was pressure to go to University and read English. So he went to Art College and learned to daub colours on canvas and drop lit matches on paper and join the squiggles. Said he wouldn't have been able to direct a movie unless he had gone to Art School.

Time at the RSC: Remembers not being particularly happy or being given enough support. Saying there was too much pressure on the treadmill, rehearsing and doing four different productions in an eight week run - it nearly drives you mad.

RSC and Ruby Wax: As a result of experiences at RSC, "seeing the ridiculousness of it all" they did become joined at the hip and good friends.

Claire … on the film work tomorrow!
Sussex, UK - Sun Jan 11 18:51:13 EST 1998

NFI Continued:
AR was asked the question about the difficulties of making a film about a mother daughter relationship when it is something a man is not particularly aware of, never experiences.
He said "Nobody would ever make a film if they had to know everything." Also that experiences such as sexual awakening, growing old, bereavement … we can all relate to any of these depending upon what stage of life we are at.

Next question was about directing.
AR said it comes "Absolutely from the heart" and about TWG in particular that it was a "Truthful and honest film … a reflection of my view of this material."
Actors are story telling "an agent between writer and audience", directing is about arriving at an ethic and gaining the confidence to survive the brickbats like St Sebastian (?). At this point he half stands and mimes the pulling out of arrows from his chest! (I loved that bit).
Dianne has the following in addition….
AR said he did think he might be carrying round the sick bag, but when the first day came it was fine. It is when good pre production comes into its own and also surrounding yourself with experienced people who know the answers if you don't. He had spent weeks walking the landscape with Seamus to become familiar with things. Then finally a reckless self confidence takes over and you just get on with it, he said.
Continuing, of course the producers see the rough cut and were bound to be white faced. There was one point after three weeks when they were one and half days behind, something he felt was not too bad considering they were shooting from 9am to 3pm when the light went. Also they were restricted by the tide, only being able to shoot at low tide, so they had to do things like sound looping as well as frantically studying the tide times. Then to find there were frantic faxes arriving overnight from LA at 6am expressing concern, added to the pressure.

Claire … I must be a Rickmanic … I'm still typing this darn thing!

The next questions related to the TWG rehearsals.
Shelia Reid and Sandra Voe (the old ladies) AR didn't need to rehearse as they both knew their characters so well.. "Believe me they could lecture you about anything in their characters and believe me they have!" Their scenes were shot in a week as Shelia was doing something for the BBC.
Arlene Cockburn and Garry Hollywood were rehearsed. AR spent time with Arlene who had just gone from college to doing the stage play and then the film. She had to do a nude scene, which she had never done before and AR felt it was important that it was handled in a certain way.
The situation with the boys was different. They had lots of energy and wouldn't sit still so they had to be taught how to channel that, particularly if due to bad weather the shooting schedule had to be changed. They had rigid rehearsals to learn the concept of stillness and not to fidget. AR also wanted them to think about the background to the characters and think things through, such as what there parents were like, what their school was like and what they had for breakfast!
About rehearsing Emma and Phyllida. AR said potentially it could have been difficult. However everyone is aware that they live across the street from one another and that Sophie is also very close. One day in rehearsals he said to Phyllida "You are playing a very strong character, but in real life Emma always finishes your sentences" There was a pause and she said "Hmm I see". At which point Emma said " In other word the man is politely telling me to shut up!"

Claire … this is all Dianne's … I only wrote down the funny bits!

Hello there. First of all I would like to say that I am new to the Internet and I couldn`t believe that there were other Alan Rickman fans out there. I collect anything I can on him and think that this web site is great for,me to find out just what he is up to. I was not impressed with Barry Norman`s review of `The Winter`s Guest´ on Film 98. The review in The Daily Mail was eqally disappointing. I can transcibe it if anyone is interested. If there is anyone who would like to get in touch with me ..great. Keep up your good work Karina, without you and other fans I would be distraught

NFI Continued:
AR was asked if he had a visual image of TWG to start and about the technical aspects of TWG.
Yes he did have a strong visual image. The scenes were "framed together" with Seamus Garvey. Before the film could go ahead he needed to know that the graphics (of the frozen sea) would be unnoticeable, and the first shot from the helicopter had to reconstructed on computer as it pans 180degrees then drops downwards towards and across the ice. (I couldn't see the join .. looked totally realistic!)
The beach area of shooting with the rocks was built on an airfield, along with 75 yards of frozen sea created on tarmac.
AR was asked about his screen credit as co-writer. I missed this bit, probably still on the tarmac, but Dianne has the answer. He reckoned his involvement was probably defined as too much interference! The first thing they realised was how different a screen adaptation was going to be from the stage. The first draft was a mess, as it was bound to be. Then began the process of Sharman producing notes and AR writing all over them. Initially it was a case of "vomiting something onto paper." In terms of time, it was a long time, the whole thing starting with Sharman sending in a script to the Bush Theatre and AR's conversations with Lindsay Duncan.
Then followed the question on the SnowBusiness screen credit and the answer about "very white people" out with their hoses and dustpans transforming everything with white paper at the ungodly hour of 4am. Don't worry he said, it's bio-degradable!

A few friends gather weekly (usually Friday)for wine, pasta, and movies (not to mention gossip), and we take turns with the wine, the pasta, and the movie. Imagine my surprise when the Friday night's movie was "The Winter Guest". Yes, THE "The Winter Guest". Seems the videocassette had been borrowed from a reviewer. (I was assured that the reviewer did see the film on the big screen and that the videocassette was for "reference purposes" only.)

I've seen TWG in the theatre (in Venice and here in BH)...it's a very different film on the small screen. But you know what? It works wonderfully on the small screen. The intimacy a smaller room helps create is perfect for TWG. The bunch of us decimated a box of tissues...and spent the balance of the evening talking about the film...no one wanted to let it go.

Nothing much happens in the film...just life.

Enjoy.

I can wax lyrical on how he sounds looks and moves but not on what was said! However, I have used the chronological order of my notes so forgive any duplication of Mandy's information.

Appearance: Dianne has very dark grey linen type suit and black tee-shirt and brown lace up DM's (Mandy … I'm just copying this … I had to ask Lis if the suit was navy-blue or black!). We agreed on the longer very Sinclair hair, and I thought he looked far more handsome than any of his recent photos.

The first section of questions related to TWG.
I lost the first two questions totally, they sounded complex but they were about TWG examining major themes through detail and AR's first day as director.
AR said that the way into the film was through points of recognition and that a first night at the Theatre was worse than the first day on set. As director, he was not so panic-stricken as there were practical things to stop the panic.

Claire … I could be all night here I'm slow at typing

To continue the on-going debate (between some of us, anyway) on the speaking accents of the Law/Thompson duo, I quote the following from an article in Saturday's Etcetera section of the UK Daily Telegraph "Law talks in brassy, rounded vowels that owe more to the high-class cockney of the acting classes than to her native Scotland." The article, on their working together in TWG, mostly covers ground that we have visited before - smelly boots, sodden socks etc. If you want to see the original visit the Electronic Telegraph, register, and then click on the Etcetera button. It's a bit of a pain to do so and AR only gets a brief mention.

In all the excitement of the New Year and the hype in the press over The Winter Guest it seems we've forgotten the People Poll for 97 most Intriguing People of 97.....Rickman ranked 75 with 94 votes...just one behind Harrison Ford. Just so you all know..... TMD and g'night! =)

FYI, there is a wonderful page at www.us.imdb.com (don't know how to do links) that provides TONS of information on thousands of movies. You can link to a page on TWG, which gives you info on the director, including a VERY handsome picture of HIM. Go explore!

Thanks, Renie. I know about TWG playing at the Paris Theatre. I'm hoping to see it locally. Since August, I have been prodding the Cinema Arts Centre to screen this film. I would be thrilled if AR mentioned CAC after reading about it in my letter.

If anyone who attended the NFT interview can remember if AR cited CAC, I would be most grateful.

The one good thing about having to work Saturday is being able to check in with you guys.

Cheers.

Re: 'Back Stage West' since it's not available in my area I called a store in LA called "Book Soup" Tel: 1-310-659-3110. They took my name, address & credit card and are shipping the magazine to me (for @ $5).

It's not said often enough, thank you to everyone on this list for sharing information, and most of all, thank you Karina for maintaining this site for all of us.

Mandy, A big, big, thank you for the tickets. I liked Winter Guest more than Ian - but he was thrilled to see the man himself and managed to talk to him afterwards. We are staying the weekend with friends who are "on-line" so I thought I'd take this opportunity to make my first "post". Hope this works! Thanks again.Sara

Forgot to say that Rickman was asked about whether he would consider doing a musical and he said with much amusement that before Alan Parker became involved in the project, that he was flown to the States to be considered for the role of Peron in Evita. He recalled saying that he tried to persuade the producers that he couldn't reach the top notes and that there was nothing he could do about it. The notes were up here (h**d gestures), and his voice is down here (more gestures). (Didn't stop Jonathan Pryce). He also said that you're committed to doing long runs with musicals and also admitted that he wasn't a great fan of them.

I'm sure Claire can fill in any gaps I've left out. (Further to the DM debate - I did get a very close look at them when he left to go up to NFT3 up the spiral staircase and paused with them at my eye-level for quite some time).

So there I was watching Babylon 5 that I had time-shifted from 7 hours previously and fast-forwarding merrily through the commercial breaks...when suddenly, there was a flash of familiarity. Rewind back and hit a 1 minute filler piece called Rough Cut, during the last commercial break, about The Winter Guest. There were a couple of sound bites from Emma, her mum, and Himself. Also a couple of spiffy angles to grab with my Snappy when the darn thing resurfaces from its relocation.

Anna, I'm sorry, I forgot you'd asked whether I'd received a reply from People Magazine. I got a standard acknowledgement that they'd received the letter and would consider it for the magazine. Obviously the odds of it being published aren't good.

Upon hearing that Titanic is a possible Oscar contender, I am truly beginning to question just what the h-e-double hockey sticks is going on with US film makers, modern taste, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (did I get that straight? Is that their official name?) It hardly matters what they choose to call themselves--- Titanic is a nice piece of entertainment, a sentimental journey back into the past--- but a great work of art it isn't and never will be. Yes, to be sure---the special effects are breathtaking, the performances good, and you will feel a bit teary eyed as the ship goes down, but I hardly think it is one of the best films of the year. Certainly, the most expensive---maybe that is why it is being nominated, to try and recover some of the cost. Getting a nomination usually means the film might make some extra money, and perhaps they are doing everything they can to turn a profit. BTW, Kate Winslet does look glorious, and her acting is excellent---none of the above is meant as a slight to her. Leonardo DiCapio I could have lived without....he looks barely into puberty, though sometimes he almost made me believe he was appealing....perhaps I should give credit to his acting ability for that. However, I agree with an earlier post that mentioned Kate Winslet's co-star in S&S (hmmm, wonder who that could be?) was the best actor she has worked with to date..

I'm glad that Laurie has found some entertainment in the CBC tape which, sadly, lacked any AR poetry reading. And I can't even apologise to her directly because my e-mail has been down all day (doubtless something else we will be able to blame on 'the icestorm of the century'). So, publicly - sorry, Laurie, and I'll buy you your ticket to TWG if it ever shows up here. And my apologies to everyone else whose hopes I raised - I did say I heard it from the next door room! Finally, many thanks, Mandy, who *did* manage to see and hear the real thing and told us about it so cogently.

Andrea-In New York, TWG is playing at the Paris Theatre at 4 West 58th St. (just west of Fifth Ave.)

Snow Business is the same outfit that did the snow at Blenheim Palace for Branagh's *Hamlet*. (Of course there was actual snow as well...)

Thanks for checking on the Highwayman, Laurie. And thanks for the UK report Mandy.

Alan with wings? Oh My. I'll have to reach for my fan again; I feel the vapors coming on! In my mind's eye, I see AR in an overcoat, possibly with a ponytail, a la Cassiel in "Wings of Desire" and "Far Away, So Close." Find these two gems if you haven't seen the she realized I was talking about Brandon, not Willoughby. What does she know anyway? :)

Can't wait to get home to watch "The View"!!!!!!

Good morning all! The View was wonderful! Tho AR wasn't on it for nearly long enuf and didn't appear until alomst 11:30, if was a lot of fun. He looked slim and handsome...wearing all black again - a black blazer, black button-up shirt (buttoned to the collar), black slacks, black socks and brown shoes. He made reference to Dogma(I think) and did a mini imitation of his New Orleans accent. He also said that there was another film that he had done following The Winter Guest (as an actor) but didn't give any particulars. Hmmm, and that's about it!

Just saw 'the View' excuse the typos, I'm still excited. AR was only on for @ 5 mins. Emma was interviewed first @ 11;13, then Emma & Phyllida w/ the question of the day, then Alan @ 11:36 - 11;40. But what a wonderful 5 mins. it was. Will say no more right now. he did say they had finished filming 'Judas Kiss' but mentioned no other projects.

WOW! Now lets see (times are into the hour of the show). Commercial at :11, Emma at :14, Commercial at :20, Phillida at :24, Commercial at :32, a VERY WITTY Alan at :35, end of the three of them at :40. Alan is wonderful especially since the question of the day discussed just before he comes on is &quotWhat is the first thing you look at when you first see a man?". Just try being a man in that group of 6 women!

Happy New Year everyone! The January 1998 issue of Sight and Sound magazine has a very positive review of TWG saying, in part, ...Rickman and his talented cinematographer Seamus McGarvey create a series of ravishing, resonant images, many of them crisply framed close-ups that allude both to Frances' stills photography and to her and others' emotional isolation...

Did I miss something? The Boston ABC affiliate ran what was clearly The View on tape this morning. Reference was made to recent Thanksgiving festivities and an event videotaped in a school yesterday. No schools were open on New Year's Day. Maybe the program with the P, E, & A troika was being taped today for future broadcast?

May I ask a favor of someone out there? Denver doesn't show The View until late Friday night, actually 12:35 am Saturday morning... so any Rickmaniacs in this area will be the last to see it in the country! Anyway, after you've seen it tomorrow, would you please make note of when they started the interview sequence and how long it lasted... and if they had a lead-in before the commercial, etc. Thanks!

E! is having their star fashion shows today... and while AR was in the '96 Emmy and GG shows, the only time he is shown this year is when he is standing behind Helen Mirren who was overwhelmingly chosen worst dressed woman. So, if you are watching the Golden Hangar awards, there is a gorgeous quick shot of him standing behind HM under the worst dressed woman, and it's on around :45-:50 past the hour, I believe. Also, he's standing behind her at the end of the '97 GG show when they announce Worst Woman, as well as the very end... gorgeous shots!

Jennifer in Houston, I agree with you in principle about accents, but in practice - well, when I lived in England, I tried my best to sound English. I'd go into a fruit-and-veg shop, dressed head-to-toe in tweeds, and say, "Hahf a pound of toe-mah-toes and some bah-nah-nahs please," and the lady would go, "Oo, what part of the States are you from, love?"
