Message to Suz, Elise, Chris and all former residents of the IRC Channel: Hey kids, I'm back from the academic black hole. It has been four semesters straight of juggling lectures/work/papers etc. I've read so many books my brain is about to explode. It is truly amazing I didn't have an aneurysm. The summer semester is winding down. Only one paper and one exam left. Then I'm off for three weeks of much needed R&R. Hope all is going well. One final thought, I'm writing my final paper on French cinema director, Agnes Varda and in particular her most excellent film - Sans toit ni loi; translation, Vagabond, 1985. For those who have seen the film and have have some ideas/thoughts/ opinions about feminist cinema, your emails would be much appreciated. Missed you all and hope to arrange a virtual rendezvous soon. Take care and stay cool. Virtual hugs, Janice

The Aug 1 Sunday (no, I'm not psychic) Arts & Leisure section of the NY Times has an article on Dogma, Deflator of the Faith? Director Begs to Differ. No word on a release date. "Along the way, there are encounters with a muse who moonlights as a striptease dance (Salma Hayek), a sarcastic seraphim who likes his tequila neat (Alan Rickman), . . ."
and no further mention of AR.

In the latest TATTLER, quickie discussion of Hollywood and how it is pulling in the reins in terms of actors' salaries. Mentioned was how Tim Burton and Matthew McConaughey (amongst others) have had their production deals cancelled. And, as an incidental, Tim Allen's usual $6 million salary is down to $1.2 mill for GQ. If he's getting that, I cringe when I think of Weaver's and Rickman's salaries.

We have a target date! In this morning's "Hollywood Reporter": Staff report
DreamWorks SKG production president Bob Cooper is stepping down to form Robert Cooper Prods. Studio principal Jeffrey Katzenberg will assume the production reins until another executive is hired. ...
At the 5-year-old studio, Cooper oversaw production on Sam Mendes' "American Beauty," which stars Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening as well as Dean Parisot's "Galaxy Quest" with Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman. "Beauty" is slated for a Sept. 17 release, while "Quest" will hit theaters Dec. 10.

This may be a dumb question (I know you're working on different formating, *mac* is it?) but will we ever be back to the one page that changes periodically? Of course, this is fantastic because I've got four pages bookmarked along with the "original." Sorry if this has been covered before.

The Independent (London) lists TWG as their pick of the day: "IN THE CINEMA, Alan Rickman (right) is probably best known for a series of seductive baddies (cf, Die Hard and Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves), but he added another string to his bow with an impressive directorial debut, The Winter Guest (10pm FilmFour)." Well, its finally starting! Corona has a review of the GQ trailer; it's short enough to reprint: "July 27, 1999... "Tonight there was a trailer for Galaxy Quest before Inspector Gadget, and it was a grand hoot. The opening shots mimic the classic Star Trek sand-and-rocks cheesy planet set, and the whole thing just looked like it carried the premise really well. Alan Rickman spent the entire trailer (and presumably the entire movie) in alien makeup (he's one of the 'actors', though, so the makeup was deliberately a bit cheesy). The 'real' aliens look just like normal humans, except when Tim Allen comments on this and they reveal their true form (we only see the disgusted reactions of the humans)." [Jon Reeves was sitting in the fifth aisle, third seat from the left, middle row.]"

Has this been posted before? *rubs forehead* AR, as quoted in the August issue of Premiere: "Cannes is like a circus without the tent. We're all performing dogs. Some are better at it than others."
AR's quote was the lead-off to the article, which included brief notes on how Harvey W. charmed Roger Ebert into that Dogma review we read, and how the Lion's Gate head enjoyed the screening.
Would that I could go to the Venice Film Festival this year, as Kenneth Branagh's "Love's Labour's Lost" is scheduled to show, as well as Ralph Fiennes in the film "The End of the Affair." I can only hope for a Mill Valley showing.

In today's "Hollywood Reporter," e-mail section: October surprise: Director Kevin Smith, making the press rounds last week to promote a new DVD of his film "Mallrats," kicked up more speculation about the fate of his much-discussed "Dogma." Readers will recall that there has been considerable speculation about who would release the film, after Miramax Films decided not to do so under pressure from parent the Walt Disney Co. Last week, online and radio reports quoted Smith ("Clerks") as saying the picture would be released by Lions Gate in October. But that may have been premature. While Lions Gate has long been considered a front-runner, there is no deal yet, making an October release difficult. Smith could not be reached for comment, but he has also said that "Dogma" will be shorter than its Cannes version. A spokeswoman for Miramax chiefs Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who bought the film back from their company and have been trying to sell it ever since, would only say that a distribution deal should be announced in the next few weeks. Has someone turned the Alan Rickman Forum into a private site? I thought I'd just check in and see if there was any discussion going on, but when I clicked on my bookmarked site, I got a message saying "you do not have access to this site". Can someone enlighten me on this? Has the site gone away? Or has someone turned it into a private one requiring a password?
If it's private, from whom do I get the password?

Regarding some of the out of print stuff like "Close MY Eyes", I've been having really good luck lately finding used copies at a site called Bookfinder (www.bookfinder.com). It is a service that lists used and out of print titles as well as some film posters offered by a variety of used booksellers from the US and Europe. I just ordered 2 copies of "Close My Eyes" there last night. I also ordered a copy of TMD. It was a first edition in hardcover. They also have posters from a few of AR's films, though I don't think any I saw where posters with his picture. I find the offerings change pretty quickly so I have a list and check a few times a week.

Tried to do a link in the previous post to the actual site, but failed. Here it is: http://www.senet.com.au/~sarneyc/ mrpicms1.html.
ALSO: Is anyone, besides myself, interested in obtaining the actual screenplay text of CLOSE MY EYES? I've wanted it for awhile *just because* and tried to order it from the publisher (Methuen), but they had *just* taken it out of production. The rep there was so sweet, she actually tried to look around the office to see if there was one lying around! I was wondering whether we could initiate a reprint by writing them on a given day with a basic, nicely written message that we are a group of newer fans who would love to own copies of the book (it was originally published in 1991). The book is rather thin and runs no more than $10, but it includes some nice glossy pictures from the film (yes, we've seen them) in the center. Just a nice thing to have and not worth paying hundreds for on ebay for an original run. If we each order a couple of copies, they may consider doing this. What do you all think? We can write to the US division in New Hampshire, and I'd be happy to dig up the address.

If you're having a good time browsing through the Richard E. Grant book anyway, take a look at pages 222-228 and 319-321. He's very, very funny describing *himself* as an obsessed fan who finally, after years of adoration from afar, comes face to face with The Adored One -- with embarrassing results. He's equally funny about being on the *receiving end* of panting fandom when he writes from the perspective of the actor pursued by a certain type of aggressive autograph-seeker.

John Cleese WAS a great sheriff in "Silverado"... he walks in after a barroom brawl and says "What's all this then?" which was one of my favorite, best delivered lines in the movie. But I'm glad he didn't get the part in RH:PoT because I might not be reading this GB now! Possibly I would have one day rented QDU (I didn't rush to see it in the theaters, which I was sorry about once I found out AR was in it... after I'd seen him as the Sheriff) and fallen for him then... but maybe it might have taken years!

I think John Cleese would have made a great sheriff, he just would have done it much differently. It just goes to show how much AR inhabited that role and made it his own. Imagine AR in "Life of Brian." He would have been a riot!!

Oh, dear, dearie me. Now THAT is a picture that I'm not going to be able to get out of my head . . . John Cleese as the Sheriff. I just know that every time the image crosses my mind, I'm going to be *giggling* at odd moments. For weeks on end. ;-D

Just a little point, very little actually, Richard E. Grant rented the same house AR had been living in during the making of Die Hard. In fact, he rented it right after. Lucky man. Lucky house. Lucky hot tub. Richard E. Grant's book is actually pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot. I'd definitely recommend it.

I was surprised to have this zoom right off the page of Richard E. Grant's collection of film diaries, With Nails: 16th August, 1990 "Get a formal offer to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in RHPOT today, it having been 'passed' by John Malkovich and then John Cleese." Then on 12th September, "Despite a flurry of phonings back and forth, I've had to bow out of my chance to do Sheriff duty opposite Mr. Costner."

Up at NewsAskew today: Dogma has a distributor, and we can expect a release most likely the second week of October 1999 here in the US! The distributor, which we still believe to be Lion's Gate (since Universal puts out their DVDs), should be announced officially in the next 2 weeks.

I don't think we're going to see much in the way of news for the next few weeks. Last year we'd already heard about JK appearing at the Toronto FF and the news about A&C only came out in late Aug/early Sept. So we're probably maxed out news-wise for the next little while. On the other hand, we could give a prize to the person who comes up with info about his next project. I'd even give honourable mentions to really good rumour-mongering.

I looked up rum in my British A to Zed book, by N. W. Schur, and it says rum, adj. Inf. funny (peculiar)
SlangThe usual meaning of rum is "funny" in the sense of "peculiar" or "strange". For example, "What a rum way to dress!". But in combination with certain nouns, rum has other meanings:
a rum customer is a dangerous customer, a person not safe to meddle with;
a rum go is a tough break;
a rum start is a funny thing of the sort that so often happens on the way to the theater if one can believe comedians' patter;
a rum old do is a funny situation, a bizarre happening, a mixed-up affair (We started out, it began to rain, we ran inside, the sun came out, we went out again, it began to pour rain, we rushed back inside – it was a rum old do!).
All three words in this idiom are Briticisms.
I don't know if this helps or adds further to the confusion!

I thought this was rather amusing. I was reading a book about C.S. Lewis called Clive Staples Lewis: A Dramatic Life, by William Griffin. Most of you are probably familiar with Lewis as the author of The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, etc. Anyway, the book reports Lewis' response when someone loaned him a copy of the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. His comment was, "What a very rum book! . . . like reading a Mozart libretto seriously: a blood-curdling experience."
I call upon all of you practitioners of Brit-speak: "rum"? I gather from the context it means something like disturbing or alarming.
One can only wonder what Lewis would have thought if he had lived long enough to see Rickman play Valmont . . . ;-)

Ok, I'll jump in. I also attended MIFF last weekend and really loved DkH very much. I was looking through the archives from last year and saw that some of the people who saw it in Seattle had a chance to talk to Alan Coleman Howard. Someone mentioned that he talked about AR's input on how to play David. Well having seen it now I'm awfully curious. If anyone is feeling chatty I'd love to hear what he said. I certainly don't want to ruin it for anyone so if you are interested you can email me off board if you feel it would ruin it for others. Georgiana--Excellent catches. And "Cousin, Cousine", which was Americanized as "Cousins". "Dark Harbor" seems (at least from the descriptions) a--how do I put this diplomatically--a "borrow".
And then there's another category--the "GMTAs"--"Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" (I can hear it now--"There's this killer comet....!!!") that get green- lighted at different studios at the same time.
And the television one-offs--"The Nanny" is blown up into "The Beautician And The Beast".
Is it any wonder Rickman has a hard time finding scripts worth his while?

Interesting to hear that "Dark Harbor" (which I haven't seen) rips off "Deathtrap" (written by Ira Levin, who also wrote "Rosemary's Baby")...but then, what's "Lake Placid" but an inflated version of an "X-Files" episode? At least "Eyes Wide Shut" acknowledges its source material ("Traumnovelle" by Arthur Schnitzler). Anyone remember a film called "Chain Of Desire"--it was nothing more than a modern version of Schnitzler's "La Ronde" (of course, they never bothered to mention Schnitzler). A good friend of mine has just been signed to write two episodes for a television show--the first thing the producers told her was "Make it like _____, except with 20- somethings and set it in London." She's not at all happy about it, but work is work.
Such thievery is everywhere in the industry. Anyone else got a favorite theft--er, remake?

Alice, the Lumet film is "Deathtrap" (like "Mousetrap"). "Dark Harbor" has entirely different dialogue and is not a "remake." But I'm sure those hoping to remain unspoiled before seeing this film are not pleased to know of the similarity.

Just saw Michael Caine's 'Death Trap'. It has essentially the same plot as 'Dark Harbor', just set in Long Island, not Maine. Do any of you understand why a basic re-make of a film with Christopher Reeves as the other male lead would not give credit? There is nothing wrong with remaking a film. They do it all the time. A few details were different. So it's possible that they didn't feel it was the same film. But it COULD explain the distribution problems here in the US. Some of you understand the film distribution game better than me. What's the rational here? ********************************************************** Can't discuss the significant differences,as it would ruin Dark Harbor for those of you who haven't seen it. But check out 'Death Trap' and you will have the basic plot of 'Dark Harbor'.

According to the Trade Press, Galaxy Quest filming should finish very early August. As for Post Production, well how long is a piece of string?! It’s a complex process, but the guys at IL&M know their stuff. It will be very tight to get things done and dusted by Christmas. If they miss this slot, it could be pushed to next year, with perhaps a Public Holiday release to get more ‘bums on seats’.

That question/answer about Tim Allen's future movies was the same one I found in my Rocky Mountain News tvguide last month... saying that it will be released next spring or summer. However, Entertainment Tonight says December 1999. Guess we will have to wait (as usual) and see what happens. Entertainment Tonight isn't always right... since when years ago they said Mesmer was to be released, and of course we know sadly it never really was! With Tim Allen, tho, we should get some action.

SECTION: Entertainment, Television, and Culture HEADLINE: Director Kevin Smith to Appear at Virgin Megastore in New York To Promote DVD Release of 'Mallrats'
DATELINE: UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., July 13
Kevin Smith, the acclaimed director of the cutting edge films "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," and the controversial "Dogma," will make a special appearance to promote the DVD Collector's Edition release of Mallrats between Noon -- 2 p.m. on July 20, 1999 at the Virgin Megastore at Union Square in New York City. The title, from Universal Studios Home Video, debuts in stores on July 20 for $34.98 suggested retail price.

The hilarious slacker comedy "Mallrats" follows the lives of several youths spent at a mall over a weekend and stars Jeremy London, Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck and Jason Mewes, with cameos by Priscilla Barnes and Michael Rooker.

I swear I didn't touch the formatting! Here's another bit, Buffalo Evening News, 13 June--with later release date than the December 1999 quoted everywhere else:
Q. Now that "Home Improvement" has ended, will Tim Allen be making more movies?
A. Definitely, though he'll be heard in one before he's seen in one. He'll reprise the voice role of Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story 2," which will be in theaters toward the end of the year. The sequel was originally destined for a direct-to-video release, but given how much money the first film made, Disney executives reconsidered. Allen is at work on another movie right now, a spoof of science fiction movies called "Galaxy Quest." He plays one of several actors mistaken for true space heroes by extraterrestrials. Sigourney Weaver gets to send up her "Alien" films as one of the other stars. Expect the film to hit screens next spring or summer.

In the London Times 26 June, contrasting Oracle's guru, Lary Ellison, with Microsoft's Bill Gates: "While Gates is nerdy and obsessive, and happy to appear in public wearing thick glasses and lumpy Microsoft sweatshirts, Ellison is cool and flippant, and dresses immaculately in what appears to be bespoke Armani. Just returned from seeing 'Dark harbor' twice at the Maine Film Festival. It took 2 times to figure out the many twists and turns. Georigana was the star of Opening Night, having come the fartherest (Seattle). Producer requested help on getting it distributed. (See below the reply from Landmark/Embassy Cinema. It appears that we need to contact our local 'art houses' to try and get these indie films distributed. Can't hurt anyhow. Otherwise, it goes to video in the Fall. There's a beautiful soliloquy on 'Love being time spent" with Vivaldi's Concerto for 4 Violins played by the woman in the background. (That piece was also in Die Hard and TMD, so I suspect AR had a voice in the choice). I call it "Alan's Ode to Rima". Can't wait for you technology gurus to get that as a .wav file. Now, the reply from Landmark: ************************************************************ I sent your recommendation on to our film booker. Film distribution is such a crazy business... so we will have to see. But your suggestion is appreciated. In fact, I think you are the second person to write to me about this film. Renita > -----Original Message----- > From: Alice Brown [SMTP:alicecbrown@yahoo.com] > Sent: Monday, July 12, 1999 3:09 PM > To: Embassy Cinema > Subject: Re: Landmark Theatres - 7/9 - 7/15 > > > > -As a member of your august mailing list, I just attended the maine Film Festival. Opening night featured "Dark Harbor": beautiful cinematography of the Maine coastline in Fall splendor, excellent acting by Alan Rickman and Norman Reedus (from MIMIC and 8 Millimeter), as well as Polly Walker (Enchanted april and Restoration). I am sick that so many excellent films don't get distributed. I talked to the producer, Jeff Sharp about your wonderful choices and how 'Dark harbor' would fit so beautifully and he suggested that you get in touch with them at 212/475-7555. They are Hart-Sharp Productions at 380 Lafayeete St., Suite 304 > New York, NY 10003. > Such a movie should not be missed!!

I just saw a commercial on Lifetime. AR's friend Ruby Wax has a new show premiering on Lifetime soon. The only thing she says is that it isn't a talk show(like America would need another of those!). Maybe AR will appear to get her started with Dogma and Galaxy Quest coming up.

Much can be said about "Dark Harbor," but I shall limit myself to three specific comments: (1) Wonderful acting by Mr. Rickman, as always, especially in a scene involving kitchen cupboards and the word "shut" (and 'honorable mention' to a little monologue on the nature of love...);
(2) Although there are many impressive images in this film, there is one in particular, near the end, of David in left profile, on the deck of his boat, wearing a white shirt, seen from the chest up, aglow in the golds and peaches of the setting sun, which is now emblazoned on my visual cortex and which I would that I could share with each and every one of you; and
(3) Jeff Sharp, one of the producers, who did a Q&A after the showing, suggested that the film has made money with its European and South American sales, and that we may see it on cable or video as soon as this fall.
The Maine folk, especially festival director Joan Phillips- Sandy, were phenomenally gracious.

From today's NY Post, an update on the fabulous Emma T. THE NAME GAME ..
Emma Thompson's having a problem-free pregnancy - except when it comes to picking the baby's name. The "Sense and Sensibility" star, who recently announced she and boyfriend Greg Wise are expecting, told reporters at the Oscar Moore Screenwriting awards she can't decide. "Every name I think of gets pooh-poohed by my partner, the young Mr. Wise," Emma cracked, in a reference to her much younger beau. "I have been toying with names like Winston and Clementine, but I don't think they are going to wash."

Off Topic! Suzanne was just talking about Bravo which reminds me that Adam Coleman Howard (the director of Dark Harbor) is featured rather prominently in a Bernadette Peters' flick called "Slaves of New York" (also featuring Stanley Tucci and Mercedes Ruehl) which airs on the Bravo Network this coming Friday evening and Saturday morning (July 17 and 18). Yes, he's another actor-turned-director! Check your local listings if you're interested.
He plays "Stash", the whiny, cheating, aspiring artist who is Bernadette Peters' boyfriend. It's a quirky but fun film. Just wanted to give a heads up in case anyone was looking for something to do ...

Hope this won't have an adverse effect on the possible North American distribution of Rickman films, but - a Cdn. paper reported yesterday in its business section that Lion's Gate Entertainment, which I believe had been touted as a possible distributor, has warned it expects to report a $14 mln. loss for the year ended March 31. Largely due, apparently, to a major investment in US-based Mandalay Pictures.

TV ALERT (again): The weekend edition of Entertainment Tonight has another segment about Galaxy Quest (about 35-40 minutes into the show). Well, more of a recap of the two previous times really, but a little different. Also, the current episode of "Movietelevision" on the Bravo channel is about various films that appeared at the Cannes Film Festival. They talk about Dogma for about the first five minutes, including interviews with Kevin, Ben, Selma and Alan. They even show a few scenes from the film I've never seen before (none with Alan, though). The show will come on again tomorrow (Sunday) at 4:00 p.m., Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 5:30 a.m. (Eastern Time). But this is a series, so they might not be the same episode.

A little OT article about Emma T I thought you'd all be interested in. No name yet for Emma's baby
LONDON - Appearing in public for the first time since announcing her pregnancy, actress Emma Thompson said today that she is looking forward to becoming a mother, but has had little success in deciding on a name.
"Every name I think of gets pooh-poohed by my partner, the young Mr Greg Wise. I have sort of given up thinking of names now," said Thompson, speaking to reporters before attending a screenwriting awards ceremony in central London.
"I have been toying with names like Winston and Clementine, but I don't think they are going to wash," Thompson said, referring to Britain's wartime leader Winton Churchill and his wife, Clementine.
Thompson, who won an Academy Award in 1991 for her performance in Howards End, said the awards ceremony would be her only public appearance before the baby's expected birth in October, adding that she was in semi-retirement.
"Having reached 40 this year, if they were going to find someone to play opposite me they would have to exhume him," she said.
Thompson met Wise when they appeared together in the movie Sense and Sensibility. END

Susan--thank you for your public service announcement, and I am glad that things look good for you. When I had my first mammo ever, it did not come back normal and I spent several anxious weeks wondering if I had cancer. Thank God I did not, but I've never forgotten the experience. That was when I was thirty-five, and some physicians don't recommend mammography until a woman turns forty. WHAT are they thinking of?! I also lost a cousin to breast cancer. She was thirty-seven. Susan's right, ladies. Please have regular physicals and have this checked out; don't be brought down by something that is often very treatable if caught early. And do your self-exams, too!!!

Hi all, just thought I'd point you to my site (just click on my name, below) for a little thing I found, thanks to my old AR sleuths. I was in Canada the other week and found a book on Harriet Walter's career. In it is a picture of AR and Harriet in The Seagull, and I scanned it in and posted it. The photo in the book isn't all that big, and there's hardly a mention of AR in the book except for a paragraph I can cite for you. I haven't found the book here in the States nor has it come up on B&N or Amazon searches, and it's on the expensive side--around $30 US. I found mine at the mecca of all bookstores, World's Biggest Bookstore in Toronto, and there was only one copy at the time. They also had one harcover and two softcovers of the dreaded Paton book! I've added the cover of Walter's book to my biblio-file page, but here's the ISBN for those of you interested in it: 0-670- 88353-0. (P.S.: Hopefully soon, I'll have more stuff up on my site. I've been scanning scads of stuff, especially that monster of a play, LLD, so I'll let you all know when I have more up to take a gander at.)

Did not realize the Cannes showing of "Dogma" was of a work in progress! Time International, June 7, 1999 v153 i22 p58
A Stellar Eclipse: At Cannes '99 the stars were overshadowed by upstarts, but a handful of worthy films saved the day. (Cannes Film Festival)
COPYRIGHT 1999 Time Inc. All rights reserved.
BEST BEGINNING Even in unfinished form, Kevin Smith's anti- clerical, pro-faith comedy soars with ambition and audacity. Dogma has stoked enough ignorant outrage that its U.S. distributor, Miramax, dropped it. So Smith wrote a text preface--it starts with a plea, segues into warning and finally invokes the lowly platypus--that perfectly sets the larkish tone of this serious farce. If the final cut can match the preface for good humor, Smith may have the burliest theological bull session since Shaw's Don Juan in Hell.

As for Wild Wild West, it has all the makings of an Avenger- like faux pas--including a script uniformly despised and derided. (One review from an LA paper called the screenplay "swill.") I haven't seen the movie yet, but I intend to, since Kenneth Branagh plays the over-the-top brilliant and diabolical villain, Dr. Loveless, and his performance has been cited as the best part of the film. I doubt I'll be buying the soundtrack, however.

I have a treat for you all. Especially those of you who thought your RealPlayer's video for the Dogma clips left a lot to be desired. Or couldn't get your RealPlayer to work at all (at least I hope this works for you). As some of you know already, I have been planning to add a Video Gallery to the Alan Rickman site. Although I want to finish other things on the site before I start something new, well... I hope this isn't redundant, but I just couldn't resist using my video capture equipment on the Dogma clips shown on the Sundance Channel (same scenes as newsaskew, but hopefully improved). You don't need any kind of special plug-in or program to play them (it's built in). Just download (and remember what folder you save them in) and then double click on the file name and they should start playing automatically.

Thanks Robyn for the synopsis of the Red Dwarf sound file! As it happens, I have been working on a transcription since Friday, with Claudia's help (thanks Clods!), after my attempt to get an audiotape to Rebecca (one of our wonderful resident transcribers) failed. As Robyn noted, they are frequently talking at the same time, which makes it a bit difficult to figure out who is saying what. And I'm not sure if the humor translates into writing (it's pretty funny to listen to), but here you go: 1st person: He probably was one of the the first people we auditioned who didn't intimidate us... because we were auditioning people like Alan Rickman. Remember that?
2nd person: Yeah, well...
3rd person: Hey, Alan wouldn't... wouldn't audition, would he?
1st person: Well, he wouldn't read.
3rd person: He wouldn't read, and we...
2nd person: Didn't he read? I thought he read.
3rd person: No, well, we went to the pub...
1st person: No, he had a drink. We were prepared to have a pint...
3rd person: He was prepared to have a pint and discuss which part he wanted.
2nd person: hmmm
1st person: Well... well, he wanted to play both parts.
3rd person: He did, actually.
1st person: And then we discussed where it should be shot and I remember thinking, well, okay.
2nd person: (laugh)
1st person: And then, uh...
3rd person: Eventually we did sneak a little reading out of him... in the pub.
1st person: Oh, that's right.
1st person: Right. That was strange.
3rd person: And uh, yeah, and Fred Molina was interested in doing Rimmer.
2nd person: Yeah, that's true.
1st person: That would have been very interesting...
2nd person: Yeah.
3rd person: A different show, wouldn't it?
1st person: I mean, you know, it would have certainly... we could have scuppered his film career for him.
2nd person: We could have happily scuppered both their film careers for them.
3rd person: (laugh) Yes. No being thrown out of windows by Bruce Willis for them!
2nd person: Yeah.
1st person: Absolute not, no.
3rd person: (laugh)

Thank you all, looks like I have struck lucky between the comments here and on email, *all* pictures currently on CPP have individual fans. Deborah, the one labelled *magazine shoot* came from a film memorabilia fair two weeks ago, its part of the Sept 91 GQ magazine shoot that also provided the famous b/w autograph that is sent out by his agency on request. In the coming month you will see it in another guise.
Since the origin of the pictures has ben raised I will use the space for another timely *thank you* to all those who have lent me books, pictures, presskits and magazines to scan, or sent the scans for inclusion. Again with respect to the Galaxy Quest pics: My reaction to AR's incarnation as a sheep has become more nuanced. After I first saw the shots, I went off to wash my hair. There I was in the shower, muttering in outrage, "Yeah, right, horns. Couldn't they have gotten him a decent designer? He looks like an off-the-shelf stereotypical alien in some cheesy low-budget TV sci-fi thing." Then the light bulb went on (this would be the metaphorical light bulb, what with me being in the shower.) He looks like that because of his role. He's playing a character that acted in a cheesy low-budget TV sci-fi ... So although I still think he looks like a sheep, I'm reconciled to it. My outrage has changed into anticipation of what his character is going to think about having to look like a sheep.

R. Faey, it's a bit difficult to get a transcription down because you have two voices interrupting and speaking over each other. But here is what I could get down:
He was one of the first people they asked to audition. Rickman didn't want to audition, ("he wouldn't read at first") as much as he wanted to discuss the project so, because "he wanted a pint," they went to the pub. They had their pints and talked about the two different characters Rickman was interested in. Then he wanted to discuss the shooting location. They "sneaked a reading" in the pub.
Then the two men mentioned Alfred Molina and how it was to both Molina's and Rickman's advantage that they didn't work on this project as it probably would have "scuppered" their film careers.

Hi friends, unfortunately I have not seen Alan Rickman and in fact this has nothing to do with him. I just wanted to say greetings to Suzanne and all other Rickman fans. Greetings from Roskilde rock festival, this is really a unique experince... Love,

Sir Alexander looks so profoundly unhappy in his alien guise that surely the stage must be set for some highly comedic sturm und drang over his actor's lot in life?
Georgiana, hoping they let Rickman run with it!

She kind of reminded me of Susan Sarandon, for some reason (and her hair isn't blonde ether, is it?). At any rate, I think Sigourney looks great with blonde hair. And it looks like AR's alien character has a little blonde hair/fuzz/fur also. :-)

It's Kathie (ie please) Lee Gifford. And, no, I didn't think so. Kathie is a redhead and Sigourney is a blond (at least in this particular film). But, hey, let's do a split screen and let the others decide for themselves. Suzanne, I'll send you a pic.

Okay, I realise that this is a TAD bit of topic. . .but did anyone else think that a blonde Sigourney Weaver looked like Kathy Lee Gifford!? And Clods, Worf is sexy!
The character Alan plays is supposed to be British, right? (Sir Alexander--duh Therese!) So at least even though Alan does look, er, rather odd. . .he hasn't messed with THE VOICE! That's certainly something to look forward to, at any rate.
Therese
Thank you SO MUCH for the pics, Suzanne--not all of us got to our VCRs in time!,

Yes, Lee! My first thought was that he looked like a ram. Those appendages remind me so much of ram's horns. Yet I think this will be a fun movie regardless, and I am sure we will enjoy the onscreen interactions nonetheless .. especially if Sir Alexander gets to display his sarcasm and or/ wry humor!

Re: A Modest Request. My thanks, too, to all those who have been posting photos, sound files, and film clips. I know their work is appreciated. Would it be at all possible--when AR is interviewed on cable television or on Internet video--for enterprising souls to transcribe and post the content of AR sound bites? Not all of us get cable TV, or have sound-enabled computers. And many of us are as interested in what AR says, as in what he looks and sounds like. My gratitude too, to those who have posted quotes. (Could anyone quote or paraphrase the essence of the unfortunate Red Dwarf audition alluded here a little while ago? Thanks again!)

They are great Suzanne! I think he makes a good alien. I really hope they do this well it could be a funny film. I will be having pictures of this film as wallpaper one day - even if it is only to give my workmates a laugh. But then - I think Worf is sexy.

Okay, here they are. The Galaxy Quest photos. I took about a dozen snaps and then picked the best two (one from each angle):
I wonder if he's in his alien makeup when abducted by the real aliens.

I beg the indulgence of the crowd as this is totally and absolutely off-topic but I'm trying to win a bet here. It's Canada Day today, our national equivalent of the Fourth of July, when BBQ's and fireworks and gallons of sangria are a must. A bunch of us were arguing about which Cdn. authors have an international readership and which ones don't. (Yeah, it was that kind of a brunch; once the Stanley Cup playoffs are over, there's a lag until we can start complaining about the weather again.)
As a crowd of literate people, your opinions would be very valuable in this debate. Please email me privately with your answers. The deadline is Sunday morning because we're having brunch again then. There are no marks off for negative answers.
This is off-limits to Canadians unless you arrived as an adult and were familiar with the literature before getting off the plane.
Many, many thanks and sorry, Suzanne.

"The Preacher" can be found at Phoenix/Coronet Multimedia for $54. When ordering, ask for THE PREACHER (not Revolutionary Witness). Item #61383-V4. ISBN: 0-3880-9900-3. IMHO it is worth the money but beware it is only 20 minutes...of course it is 20 minutes of only Alan Rickman. They are open M-F 8:30a-5:30p CST. Their number is 1-800-221-1274 Just called to order the 'Preacher'. They charged me $89. plus shipping, came to $94. Guess the announcement above should be updated. FYI Kimberly

La muerta
Si de pronto no existes,
si de pronto no vives,
yo seguiré viviendo No me atrevo,
no me atrevo a escribirlo,
si te mueres,
Yo seguiré viviendo.
Porque donde no tiene voz un hombre
allí, mi voz
Donde los negros sean apaleados,
yo no puedo estar muerto.
Cuando entren en la cárcel mis hermanos
entraré yo con ellos.
Cuando la victoria,
no mi victoria
sino la gran victoria
llegue,
aunque esté mudo debo hablar:
yo la veré llegar aunque esté ciego.
No, perdóname.
Si tú no vives,
si tú querida, amor mío,
si tú
te has muerto,
