Sunny, regarding QDU - I would not watch the movie if Alan were not in it but since he is and it is usually not expensive, go for it. His total time in the movie is not that much but he is very handsome. He is a sort of cowboy. It is definatly a good teeth part. They are so white that I think he must have had them treated . Did anyone else notice that? I hope I'm not spoiling it by saying the ending is not very happy for him.

A big huge thanks to Laura for the link to In demand. The copy I had was an MTV one which was very grainy and nowhere near the quality of your link. Have finally seen the end to the video now. AR looks truely gorgeous. Thanks again.

GML, Rickman is known to have played Volumnia in "Coriolanus" and Grusha in "Caucasian Chalk Circle" while at Latymer.

Laura - how happy have you made me! Fab link to the Texas video; my word, how wonderful he looks - that shirt and tie suit him, and those moves!! Wow! Words not enough, I know, but just wow!

Thanks, Laura, for the In Demand link - started playing it with delight coz it's far better quality than the one I have - but it only gives me 12 seconds! Anyone else with this problem?

Happy Easter everybody! Well, thanks Laura for the links on the "In Demand" video! Iīll try that soon... *** on the Germany TV channel Pro7 they show Die Hard, BUT itīs -of course- not the original, so youīll miss that wonderful voice... I just switched it off because of this (I have the tape - ha ha)... well, I have the possibility to buy the video "Quigley Down Under"... can anybody tell me if this film is worth it? The critics havenīt been that good... Iīll appreciate some information on this film... thanks! Have a nice evening!

Just in passing: I was reading an article on Hugh Grant in the Observer today (yes, I was bored), and it says "The family did not have any money - he won a scholarship to Latymer School in London (...)" and then he is quoted to say "What else did we do? Well, I did play a lot of girls." A big grin. "The head of drama, now sadly dead, did kind of enjoy young boys dressing up as girls." Ah, do we know anybody else who played girls on stage in Latymer? ;) I know HG is younger than AR, but I wonder if they had the same drama teacher...

Kiki, thanks for posting that excerpt. Let's hope PL does become the next big thing on Broadway, it'd be nice to see Mr. Rickman get some well-deserved recognition in the US for more than just his film work.
Sunny, in response to your post a couple days ago: If you're still looking to buy the Texas/AR "In Demand" video, Ebay frequently has copies of it up for auction. I've also seen an enhanced cd version on there as well, so Ebay would be a good place to check. You can also download the video for free at this linkTexas & AR Tango Video. I believe that you need Quicktime in order to play it though, so if you don't have it on your computer you may have to download Quicktime first. Hope this helps, if you have trouble with the links, feel free to email me and I'll try to help you out.

This appears in the Arts section of todays New York Times - the article is titled "A Blockbuster in the Wings":
"As generations of parents have said, "We're not mad, just disappointed." That has been the overwhelming mood on Broadway during the last month as a series of high-profile openings have led to a series of blah mornings-after.
All of which could benefit April's openers. Why? Because the logic along Broadway is that a run of mediocre reviews just lays the groundwork for an eventual rave. (Broadway, of course, isn't exactly known for its logic.) So the hunt is on for the season's sleeper.
Acouple of possibilities on the play side are "Fortune's Fool," which opens this week, and the imported revival of Sir Noël Coward's "Private Lives," which already has a respectable $1.25 million advance and had stellar reviews in London. "

Hi, Sally: Great to see you back! Did you get frostbit? By the way, I can't find this list anywhere on Fausta'a page. However there is a book people can sign which Fausta will take with her to one of the first previews on April 21st, I think it was.

Wah-hay! Back from Antartica, folks! So, AR is going to be in NY... I beleive someone posted in the forum on my website that Fausta has a NY attendee list going at her fabulous rickmanista website (apologies right now to the hard working trio of Suzanne, Clair and Claudia if I stuffed up the HTML - its been 2 1/2 fantastic web free months...)

Ah, much better. Thanks, Claire!
I'd like to remind everyone that Claire and Claudia have generously volunteered to help me with the GB, and editing it can be a very time consuming job, so please make it easier on us by trying your best to be polite and staying ON topic. For we are all here to read, share and have discussions about ALAN RICKMAN. Thank you.
Sorry I'm a little late with this (haven't been home much lately), but here is the lovely photo of AR's (Metatron) hand... or should I say *hands* (hold on to something, Renie!) LOL... on Linda Florintino (Bethany), courtesy of Mortianna (thanks!) via an unknown source: hands
Anne (NY), the "foo" is automatically added to everyone's e-mail address to deter spam (please see the FAQ for more info).
And Veronica, you can also find a list of everything AR has done in the resume on the Front AR web page.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend!

Smile Scenes:
1.DH - When he meets Mr. Takaki (Sorry, not sure of spelling}
2. Mesmer - On the stairs when he meets the Baron
3. Dark H - Playing Badminton
4. Rasputin - When the prince roller skates into him in the hall and dancing in the red shirt
If I had to choose between watching Mesmer or Dark H first I would go for DH. It has a few surprises at the end.
Claire I would be willing to keep a list. What is the best way to do it, through Email?

OK feel free to post again. Just keep On Topic - That is Alan Rickman and the rule is civilised conversation please.
Can one of the NY attendees get a list together for coordinating people's dates (as Sally did for the UK) and keep this OFF the GB?

Is there a list we can get access to from AR's agent or whatever with all the talk shows interviews/dates he will be be appearing in while promoting PL in America? Or must I chain myself to the tv and suffer all daytime network tv ( i don't have cable) in order to get lucky?

NC USA - Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 05:31:40 (PST)
Happy Easter everyone.
Hope these little paragraph thingies work.
Veronica - A while back you were looking for a list of AR's movies. Essential website: the Internet Movie Database, "www.imdb.com" (I'd make a link but am afraid of screwing up). You can search by actor, title, all kinds of things.
Harlii - Who or what is Utopia?
Suzanne - Belated thanks for the Conan O'Brien link. Delicious! I'd never really noticed The Hands before I started visiting this site. I loved when he was fumbling with the safe during the earthquake.
Flamingkitties - Fabulous name! Is there a story with it? (Is this question considered off topic?)
Re flower controversy - IMHO, flowers from an individual fan might qualify as "chasing" but from a group not at all. Fan clubs routinely send opening-night flowers as well as Christmas and birthday gifts. No reason why we shouldn't.
Re [alleged] pedantry - I'm always willing to be enlightened as to British language and customs. My all-time favo(u)rite two-peoples-divided-by-a-common-language story: A New York cabbie, stationed in England during WWII, was invited by a British date to "knock her up." All she meant was that he should stop by her house sometime, but he thought she was asking him to get her pregnant. I rode with this guy in the late 70s and he was still shaking his head over it.
Finally, what's with all this "foo"?
Happy holidays, all.

Well stated, Christine. I am all for re-channeling negative energies into positive and productive actions! So ladies, on your mark, get set.....re-channel!
Back to topic: With all this talk about the song in The Winter Guest, I suppose I shall HAVE to go back and veiw it yet again. Ann in AZ and Magda: What about the scene where Nina is patting down Jamie and stating "I can't believe its you"--the look and smile on Jamie's face is adorable, isn't it? Possibly a little off topic--but for those in the US that work out of the home during the day and don't have a chance to catch The View--A&E will begin broadcasting it at 7pm eastern starting Monday, April 1. I'm not sure if it will be current shows or. Either way--the possibility of catching AR on one or the other would be nice, don't ya think? I'm a bit exasperated when it comes to reminding people to stay ON topic, and very short on time at the moment, so please excuse my lack of guidance. And any, um... editing to the GB not taken care of by Claudia or Claire, will have to wait until tomorrow. My apologies. However, I would like to remind everyone that it *is* Easter, for heavens sake, so be nice. Please! Gaye, to answer your question, yes, contributions from overseas are most welcome. Some sent U.S. cash, but the best (safest and quickest) method is by using PayPal, which automatically converts currency from one country to another. Laura, my understanding is that he did write the words to "Take Me With You." The "All the words are Sharman's" comment, I believe, refers to the play and the screenplay. His writing credit, he has said, is limited to considerations of structure in translating her play to film. However, the music (Michael Kamen's, including the song), and song lyrics followed filming and I do not believe would be viewed as having been included in those comments. Gee, I hate to get back on topic here, but I have a question that someone here might be able to help with. I saw on a webpage somewhere that the lyrics to the song "Take Me With You" from The Winter Guest were written by Mr. Rickman - does anyone know if this is true? I am only asking because I know that he is credited with co-writing the screenplay for the movie, but according to the man himself, he claims that all the words were McDonald's and he only gave creative insight (or something to that effect). It is quite a lovely song/poem indeed so I'd like to know if he did actually write it, or if not, who did? We were also discussing (in the weekly AR chat room) opening night gifts and agreed we should send AR & LD each a bouquet of flowers, etc. from the visitors of the AR Web Site/Guestbook, like we did when the play opened in London (which was a great success, thanks to you all!). The play opens on April 28th, which is less than a month away, so if you'd like to contribute, please e-mail me at Suz@mail.usa.com or emeraldegg@prodigy.net. Thank you! HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE Ann Arizona re;- smiles.Just the way Jamie smiles when he does peek a boo to Nina in TMD.Just DDG IMVHO. Just a note, QDU will be on Sat. check your local listings, its on TBS. so to those new to AR check it out..... The Tony's are set for June 2. Tickets go on sale in May. Plays that opened between May 3, 2001 and May 1, 2002 are eligible, so "Private Lives" just makes it. The nominees will be announced May 6, and said announcement will be carried live on the American Theatre Wing's Tony website, http://www.tonys.org. The website is rather neat, and includes an area (under "Play Your Part") where you can email a nominee. The email thingy is not yet activated for this year, since they obviously don't know the nominees yet. Hands, Hands, Hands.... (just wanted to watch Renie faint).... AR should have his hands cast, autograph it and put it up for auction for a charity. Can you imagine the $$$$ Amnesty could get from that? Word has it that Mr.Rickman may be a presenter at the Tony Awards. Hello everybody!! Just in case any Germans are in this GB at the moment... Die Hard (German version "Stirb Langsam") is on the German Chanel Pro 7 on Sunday 31/03. at 22:25 pm. BUT itīs not the original! So itīs not "Hans" but "Jack" AND youīll miss that wonderful voice. Iīd just wanted to mention in case some of the younger ones didnīt see it so far... well, talking about his hands again... they are really male and strong looking while -to me- they also seem to tender... am I nuts? I donīt mind... Iīd love to see that "Texas"-video... has anybody any idea if it can be bought somewhere? Thanks for your help! Hi everyone...Mindy, I'm also @ the 19th April performance, sitting orchestra L seat, 22. Glad to know where you're sitting too Val. Don't forget, we're meeting for a drink at intermission. Mindy...come too of course! We can all prepare ourselves for the stage door! Valerie-You're going to the first preview performance? You'll have to let everyone know how it is. I won't be at that show (I'm going in May and August). Enjoy! Mindy, I am sitting in N 105 for April 19. Please feel free to come over and say hello. Would love to meet other fans. Gaye, Return of the Natives was a bit boring in the beginning. It just went on about descriptions of houses and countryside etc. However when he began to do the characters in all those marvelous different voices it was wonderful. When I heard him sing I almost had to pull over to the side of the road . Apparently he won some kind of award for his reading. That's what it says on the box. There is a great hand scene in Sense and Sensibility. When Colonel Brandon is explaining his past, they seem to show his feelings and stress. I watched the part where his hands glide over the chairs at least three times. As for the In Demand Texas clip, all I could say for thirty minutes afterwards was, "Wow". Then it became, "That man can dance". The young lady (i'm very bad with names) is very lucky-tango with Alan Rickman, what a dream come true. Actually, his hands were showed a lot throughout that too, mainly when he caressed her in the car. Georgianna: although the sets will be the same, they are in a larger space altogether. As the sets hang from above, and the space is larger above also,it means re-designing the way they hang, which ultimately means, the complete play may have to be re-blocked. For any one of us who have had to re-block a play, this is a tedious and time consuming business, filled with such boring but necessary questions as "if I took 5 steps to get from point 1 to point 2 in the Alberry, now I have to take 7 (or 9 or 10)steps to cover that distance. How does that affect the timing of my lines here?" So, much as I wish it were only a matter of a quick run through, for the actors' sake, I'm afraid it's usually not as simple as that. Rehearsals will probably be long and terribly tedious to get the play to sound and run as smoothly as it did in the Alberry. Still, I'm sure it will seem as smooth and wonderful as it's London venue. Anne RE: "Hand-some" scenes: Thanks for all the suggestions! Hmm. Name the most "I feel like an electric shock hit me" smile: AABA, when PL smiles that rascal smile at Rose in the auditorium? Or Brandon, when he's about to toss the coins? Come on, ladies and gentlemen (there are a few, aren't there?), think! :) Some excerpts from 'Theatregoer' magazine (April) re. PL: Immediately following its sold-out run at the Albery, Private Lives will open on Broadway-in the nick of time for any possible Tony nominations- on 28th April at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.Unusually, the entire West End production will remain intact with Alan Rickman, Emma Fielding and Adam Godley at three corners of Noel's uneasy marital and extramarital square-dance comedy of bad manners, and, ofcourse Lindsay Duncan repeating her enchantingly wayward performance as Amanda. Since we're talking about the great AR's hands, check out closetland, there are a lot of hand shots in that movie, the scene where he is putting the handcuffs on Madiline Stowe. or when he removing all the items from his pocket. All that have seen the movie know what I mean. He has the greatest hands around, and if there was an award for that he would sure win. I wonder if AR would ever come to Canada (Ottawa)and bring Private Lives here. I sure hope so. now that would be a real treat to see him..... Ann, Valerie and Melissa-Well, a huge sigh of relief. Tickets arrived and are safely put away. Now I can really look forward to PL! A dream come true. Where's everyone sitting? I have 5th row center for the first show, 4th row center for the second. Will I survive??? :) Can't see that it would take more than one technical run-through with a play they've performed about 175 times already--and one NYC 'theatre' site says same set designer, so doesn't sound like that will be much different... Ann, I got the following info about PL rehearsals from the Broadway.com message board: 'There will be a rehearsal period, but not nearly as long as a usual one. Most of them will be to get used to the new set and the new theatre, which seems way too large for this intimate show although Maggie Smith did the same play in the same theatre in 1975. They will probably rehearse a week or so, then tech and dress, and then start previews.' So it sounds like AR & Co. may already be in NYC or are about to arrive. Hope this helps... Alan, you rock in die hard,Galexy Quest, and Harry Potter. You are the best actor and you are so cool! Oh, no! Rumors! And I'm afraid I am somewhat responsible for the Carlyle one. Someone posted a query as to where he will be staying. I wrote that while I didn't know, in 1991 he stayed in the Carlyle. I still don't know where he is staying this time around (six months is an awfully long time in such an expensive hotel), and I haven't read anyone else say definitely where he will be (is?) staying. Re whether he is already here, I don't know. Anyone read anything? At the risk of starting another rumor, if I were him (he?), and I always make a big thing about being with family and friends, I would stay in England until after Easter, and come to the US next week. I mean, he'll be gone for a long time. Ann: I read here about him staying at The Carlyle and i think I understood that they were starting rehearsals. Constance, where did you read this??!! About two hours after my panicky posting yesterday, my friend called to say both my May and September tickets had arrived. (I had used their Amex card, so the tickets went to them.) I was so excited and exuberant, she laughed and said, "You know, you didn't just win the lottery!" I felt like I had! I won't have them in my hot little hands until Sunday, but at least I am relieved to know they are here. Thanks! Is it confirmed? Is AR and Co. in NYC, today as we speak? Are we finally sharing the same time zone? Can anyone say this for certain? i thought Pl was coming back the uk after its Ny runfor a bit, obviouisly not at the Albery because when I went in at the weekend they thought i was nuts...?! Ann & Mindy, I received my PL tickets for the June 30 performance yesterday. I ordered mine several weeks ago and they arrived by regular mail, so yours should arrive pretty soon. Ann and Mindy: Received my tickets through regular mail only yesterday. As for hand movies what about Mesmer? I don't care for the movie that much but you must admit there are many interestiung things done with hands. At the end of RHPOT when he is facing Robin getting ready for the swordfight look at his left hand. He does some kind of twitching contortion with it. Very cute! Sorry , should I not have called it a wrinkle? Anyhow it's lovely like the rest of him. As for hands- they are so big and square and strong looking , like he could sweep you up in one, and yet sensitive and expressive.. OK I'll shut up about what we all know already. I just love the bit in Blow Dry when the hand quivers above the scissors as he wonders whether to enter the competition. have a picture someone did of the hand scene in dogma. just sent it to suzanne to set it up here. happened to watch the movie again yesterday evening and just woke up again to said scene. the second time. and that was so, even as i find the film kind of witty and funny. but i don't really seem to care for the characters. somehow that never happens with the other films, well i only watch scenes of some of them anyhow:-) renie - how could i have forgotten the colonel and the panelling - right! and a floor is no bad place once the old carpet with mildew and such is removed and someone keeps you company and runs his fingers on the - wood, isn't it? Adriana - Welcome. Snape's my favorite as well... at the moment anyway, it changes weekly. If you're interested in more Alan related gossip, there are some good Yahoogroups, e-mail me for the URls if your interested. Oh, and don't worry, you're certanly not the youngest here. Iīm a 20 years old girl from Spain, my english is horrible; I hope you understand my little comment.I donīt know a lot of films of Alan Rickman; only Dogma, Robin Hood:Prince of the thieves, Galaxy Quest and Harry Potter; in the last one he is the sexy, sensual and seductive professor Severous Snape. Is my favourite film, he is solitary, different, mysterious, serious and so atractive. I love his eyes, his expressivity; I love him. What a pity he was so old for me, but may be his age, his maturity is make him so special and sexy. Ann-I haven't received my tickets either (May 8th and August 18th). It's probably because I opted to have mine sent regular mail rather than UPS. Is that how yours are being shipped? If so, give it some time. I'm just as impatient as you for those pieces of paper! But I think we should be getting them any day now. It says on the Ticketmaster site that tickets would not be shipped until 3/25. That was only Monday. I'll keep you posted and I hope you'll do the same. :) Happy Easter or in some cases maybe - Passover, everyone. Mind you Orthodox Easter is later so take this greeting and keep it for later! Hi Gaye - I spent Easter in Adelaide several years ago so I think Billy C. has good taste. My brother stopped over there on his way to W.A. and stayed for 12 years! He is W.A. now. Thank you Claire for the roof top Superman pose lol. As for hands, well my personal survey is never date a man with smaller hands than you. Noses sometime do measure a man .. ahem but feet and hands are better, especially if he knows how to use them....So hands are a rather ineresting thing to delve on. Got to go and buy some easter eggs and hot cross buns, Bye. Janine Laura, I agree with you. AR's hand on Bethany's stomach is nice. I watched the film several times before I noticed that his left hand is on her stomach and his right is on her back. That is a very sweet scene. I might add that I never took much notice of his hands [Bad girl, shame on me!] until I came here. They are sexy, just like the rest of him. My other favorite scenes of AR in TMD when he sort of picks up Nina into his arms at the beginning when she first spots him in the room. My other favorite scene is when they are on the floor and she feels his face and asks if he is real. I love that movie. Since everyone seems to be recalling their favorite AR hand scenes I feel compelled to add one of my own. IMHO the best of AR's hand scenes has to be at the end of Dogma where Metatron places his hand on Bethany's stomach and the camera does a very nice closeup. Although I'd seen his hands in many of his previous movies, I must admit I had never really experienced the full impact of their attractiveness until that one scene. If you're one of the few who haven't seen it already, I really suggest you check it out, it might help to explain what all the fuss about the hands is about. Daisy,if you scroll down to Claires name you will get on her page that way. Magda ANN - Ticketmaster said my tickets were printed a good two-three weeks before I got them. I got my 9/08 ones today and Hubby got my 5/04 and 6/22 tickets also today at his store. (Fat Moose Comics & Games, Whippany, NJ - FREE COMIC BOOK DAY May 4th, all over the USA!). I'd wait until Monday to call if they don't arrive and keep your fingers crossed that they show up soon!! Good luck. Thanks Claire for fab pictures, love the one on the catwalk, he looks as if he is enjoying himself. The one on the roof is to dye for. Yummy. Thanks again. Branca I'm getting very nervous. Although Ticketmaster said my tickets were going out soon, I still have not received them, not for May and not for September! But they charged the credit card for both! Thank you, Claire, for all the gorgeous pictures! They keep me going! His hands: before I started coming to this site, I used to think I was some sort of oddity noticing his hands! In DH, when he is holding the gun that Bruce Willis gave him, he holds it so differently, his hand almost covers the gun. I can't quite figure it out, but he holds it differently than other people hold guns (in the movies). I just received my Private Lives tickets for September 8th! Loved looking at them, put them in a very special place so I won't forget where they are 6 months from now! Only one 'complaint' - inside the package was a sample of Listerine POcketpaks Breath Strips. What's up with that? Is my breath so bad they can smell it all the way to Virginia Beach, where the tickets came from? :( Hope to see EVERYONE fromthe board who will be there Sept. 8!! Happy Easter to everyone here- getting in early this year. Thanks Judy from Sydney and good to see you here again! Gaye, I think South Australia is a wonderful place too! Claire, I really like AR on the Catwalk. How does that song go - I'm too sexy for Milan, New York and Japan!!! I'm a model, you know what I mean! Thanks for the great photo's. What pictures? Help! My computer won't let me see them! (But I'm not a fish yet) It's possible, mortianna, that I've reached a point where getting up off of the floor is a losing battle! As for h*nds, AR uses them as an extension of his acting in a way that simply delicious---the way he trills the fingers in RHPOT before the duel, the way Raz h*ndles the cabinetry, the way several characters, including Hans, do *things* to a desk with their fingers. Fingers and h*nds can show love, disgust, power, neediness, grace...you get the idea. There is never an idle movement, yet the h*nd moments are not artificial, either. And then, of course, there is Brandon and the panelling..... Hi, just for information, my Husband tells me, by reading the Sky magazine thingy, that Blow Dry is being shown on Sky Box Office in the UK this coming month... If anyone is looking for an affordable hotel in the theatre district for the run of PL, here are a couple of suggestions I found in New York Magazine: 'The lobby of the Comfort Inn Midtown (129 West 46th St.; 212/221-2600) is very stylish for a budget hotel, and while the decor doesn't carry through to the rooms, $89 gets you a clean room, breakfast and access to the fitness center.' Staying near the shows usually means high prices and street noise. But The Mayfair New York (242 West 49th St.; 212/586-0300) has rates starting at $100 and has soundproof windows.' Hope this helps. Truly Madly Deeply will be on AMC on Sunday, April 14, at 3:00 PM. Other TV listings of the Man's can be found at http://www.tv-now.com/stars/rickman.html. Claire -- Don't forget HIM. Hello everybody.......We have sold 1 out of 2 of the extra PL tix Harlii mentioned a couple of days ago. I will let the last one go for $70. Why? Because the stress is KILLING ME, that's why! So please e-mail me directly if interested. This is for June 28th fri nite 8pm, Row O: seats 107 or 108. You will be in good company! No fat old men coughing through the balcony scene, I promise!... quaranteed! I am so excited! June cannot come quick enough for me! Constance - Commes des Garsons is a high fashion house Lynn - No he doesn't wear glasses, hard to find a picture excluding Michael Collins film shots, with glasses. On the smoking issue, judging by his clothes he lives in a smoke free zone! Melissa - you will always find the Alan Rickman Picture page when you click on my name here. Lee--As far as I know, VWood w/All the Trimmings is not available in the US. I have the Region 2 DVD (from Amazon UK) and the show is chock full of awesome British talent. The extra contains hilarious deleted scenes and even one of The Man's!!! POSSIBLE SPOILER He is quite adorable when he cracks up in his deleted scene! Just to let you know that it is World Theatre Day today. Claire, What is the URL for you new AR pics? Thanks. Have any of you seen 'Victoria Wood With All the Trimmings'? Is it available in the US? The actress who played Maura in TMD is called Stella Maris. Hmmmmm... tocu is touch - very rare german accent. jane - you bad:-) don't you dare tocu that wrinkle. i've been thinking and thinking and thinking how to describe the hand fascination to this newby from finland, hello there. well i'm only "converted" since december, but I'm mad anyhow:-) dear noyemi you can admire any part of mr. r. you want to and don't need advice on that, i should think. well, as long as you keep it clean*cough* if not there is a yahoo group called alan's wenches on which everything goes:-) As to HANDS. I'm not the expert here *cough again* but I would advise you to try his first scene in TMD for a start. then perhaps the In demand video. i of course can't say too much in favour for rasputin, i am so fond of artistic historical documents and he has very nice hand scenes there. not to mention george (duel), hans (walkie talkie) etc. well, take any film, interview or whatever you will and just look at the hands. difficult, i know, but for scientific purposes this has to be done.>/br> renie - you need help on that floor? Lovely pics, what a way to start the day. How can we be expected to get any work done now that the rooftop is within the click of a mouse? Claire, you spoil us, you wonderful woman. About the glasses, I wonder if that wrinkle between the eyes is the result of youthful vanity and a shortsighted squint? Come on girls, glasses could be as big as teeth! ooohh, claire - thanks a lot. hello all! I am quite a new Alan Rickman fan - I discovered my true Rickmaniac nature only last summer. His voice is truly something, and so is his talent, but being such a newbie to all this, what is it about his hands? I want to know so I can start admiring them, as well!!! Feel free to email me! Noyemi Enjoyed the bubble captions... particularly the 'Houston' and 'GAP' ones ;) - Just thought I'd mention there are Ruby Wax interviews galore in the UK press/magazines this week, for anybody interested... she must be up to something.;) Going through a Sunday New York Times from a week or two ago, I heard the wonderful news... The one-and-only A.R. will very shortly be gracing Broadway with his fabulous presence as "Private Lives" comes to New York!!! In the words of Gilbert & Sullivan -- "Oh, joy! Oh, rapture!!!" Not to mention a big ol' thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou to Mr. Rickman for doing what he can to help the city which I dearly love and which has been my home these many years. Down but not defeated... Lemme hear it, Alan... "Start spreading the newwwwwws...I'm leaving todaaaaaay..." Claire, Thanks for all of the pictures. My favorite one is the rooftop. Man, is he gorgeous!! Where do you find all these pictures? I am glad you do find them. Thanks for sharing them. "Although he steals scenes, I don't think he sets out to." Stephen Poliakoff, on AR at work. (Source: The Times article linked to Claire's picture page.) That's the understatement of the year!:) Oh yes, and thanks for the "rooftop" picture. Watchout for that glare! :) Claire-those pictures are fantastic! I was dissappointed that I did not see Snape during the film clips for Oscar nominations. Hopefully Alan wins something in the near future!! OT: I was appalled that Russell Crowe did not win the oscar. I dislike him as a person, but his performance was exceptional, better than i could have ever imagined. I also noticed (maybe i'm wrong) that they tended to give awards to people who "needed" it, for example the more elderly because they would have less time to win something and their carrer was almost over. Perhaps it's better this way, but I also see now that these awards are all politics and the best are many times not recognized during their life time. ****I am planning on buying the Harry Potter DVD on May 28th and hope that Alan is in the extras for more than thirty seconds. ****About the teeth-they are the same color as my father's and he doesn't smoke (that's the only thing I argue about with him-when he takes a cigar out; I always win:)), just drinks coffee. I do hope Alan doesn't smoke, it unconsciously makes me look down on people that know the consequences and don't try to do something about it. *As for Rima, I try to keep her out of my mind when I think about him and his work because she's just his partner and never asked for all the publicity she gets. **Waiting very tensely to see Quigley Down Under and Die Hard this weekend on TV! Okay, I'm done... Claire.....Thankyou delightful pictures again OT ..So KB has excelled again, so pleased. What is Commes des Garsons Some kind of charity fashion show perhaps? Does anyone care to explaine? Thank You Claire for more Spatula droping pics!!! Great pics Claire, just wondering about the catwalk pic. I see that AR is wearing glasses, do you, or anyone else know if he wears them all the time, because I noticed that in other pictures, or interviews he has done, he isin't wearing them, just courious....... Who says that He is staying at The Carlyle? That would cost a King's ransom to put him up there for 6 months! A true socialist would not have it! No... I still believe that he would be in an apartement, even borrowing digs from a wealthy friend....... maybe? Just wanted to thank Claire for causing me to fall out of my chair at work and lay sprawled on the floor for about 30 seconds. Just saw that first new picture of OB at her site. The baby looks a lot like Alan, especially around the eyes. A niece? Catwalk is for Comme des Garcons in 1993. Forgot to add the Bubble with Ruby Wax was an original picture from the web with other adult participants removed, not a cut and paste by me! Claire, loved the Bubble quotes and the new pics. Where was the 'catwalk' pic taken? Judy - Billy Connelly hey? That man has very good taste! Barbara, I, too was a little disappointed that Nicole didn't win an Oscar (wasn't so fussed about Russell- but in his case maybe the award was for most "popular" actor). This talk about smoker/non-smoker relationships makes me think of Prince Charles and Camilla P/B; do they carry round packets of TicTacs wherever they go, LOL. Finally, to get back on topic - I don't think Alan would bother going to award shows unless he was nominated - not his "thing" I would imagine. Alan Rickman Picture Page renewed and results of the latest BUBBLE now showing - thanks to all contributors. The slight delay was because I went with Renie to see Kenneth Branagh in Richard III for one performance, and stayed for THREE. Yes it was that good for anyone in the UK near Sheffield who can blag a ticket somehow for a sold out show. Thanks Jane! ... am I to leave imediately or can I stay for a while if I promise not to talk about his teeth anymore? Well, just to make you feel better: I had to wear braces for some years and my bottom teeth are slightly crooked again... PLEASE letīs stop this... if only I knew what happened because of this little remark of mine... sigh. ***BUT let me tell you, I really like him no matter what happend to his teeth or his feet or whatever... AND if I ever have the chance to see him backstage and he gives me that little smile while signing the programme Iīm sure I only look into these lovely eyes and forget all about teeth... oh dream dream... VERY nice Claire. Barbara the Aussie do agree with you re RC. So Gaye Billy Connelly thinks Adelaide is the best spot in Australia Go to www.thecarlyle.com (or click on my name) and check out their home page. If you value your sanity, do not check the rates--I'm not kidding. THE CARLYLE 35 EAST 76TH ST BTWN MADISON AND PARK AVE I asked one of the cast members of TWG play (not movie) whether AR smokes, and I was told he is a social smoker. I personally don't think such a thing exists, but whatever. Someone brave could just ask him... Don't know about LLD, but in 1991 he stayed in The Carlyle, according to this article in Rickman in Print http://pages.prodigy.net/emeraldegg/articles/spirit.html. "It's the Voice. You're phoning up from the hotel lobby - Carlyle, that bastion of New York's Upper East Side affluence - to Alan Rickman's room.'Hello?' The Voice intones. Whoa. This is a hello unlike any you've ever heard. Two puny syllables infused with a swirling conflation of emotion: at once seductive, disdainful, imperious." he made a face that wasn't very becoming from what i remember...disgruntled plus 50 Flamingkities, what happened when AR was asked to sign as Alexander Dane? You can't tease us like this and not tell us...please... I suspect Alan Rickman is accustomed to American fans, and while I don't think any of us would dare the kiss on the cheek thing someone mentioned women doing at the Albery a while back, and accusing them of being American (whether or not that was true, I have no idea), I do think he's aware that we're a much more expressive group of fans...it's not a matter of being disrespectful, but I think generally less inhibited regarding what we say, I think (IMHO)...actors must adjust to different surroundings, I believe...take for instance the standing ovations or lack thereof in London (from all reports I've read)...I dare say, in NY they will get a long, rousing standing ovation for every performance...Anyway, I said all that to say, I'm not worried anymore...he'll deal with it...in his own inimitable way and we'll have loads of fun discussing all the raised eyebrows and sneers we receive...LOL... an extention to Kirsten's post - dont ask him to sign as Alexander Dane, I've seen what happens when you try and it isn't greatly pleasant! Micharle, Constance and anyone else I have worried with the signing deal. A few things: (1)Don't worry about 'chit chat' just go ahead if you are sure. I was just advising AR fans meeting him to be wary...merely my own humble opinion. (2) He does sign scripts, posters and stuff-he doesn't yell and throw them back in fans faces. Again, I was just advising people on my own humble experience of meeting him-I personally wouldn't do this. It really depends on the person (NB if he seems hassled think carefully) (3)I had to get two programs signed and he didn't realise there were two, so I just made a joke about the second. He's pretty cool about mutiple number program signings. Again, this is based on my own experience. I am sorry if my ill cast advice caused USA fans distress/worry etc. He did give me a nice smile, so it does pay to be a little reserved. My original 'guidelines' were posted with good intentions; and I didn't mean to upset anyone. Good luck to any US fans getting his autograph and just do what seems right at the time! So... let me get this right: *she* smokes and *he* gets the bad teeth?! Awwww, life is really too unfair! ;) Anyway, I'm never comfortable with comments on personal appearance or habits (unless they're positive) so I'll stop here, but as I do like to carry issues over to the greater scheme of things *dodges tomatoes*, I'd say there are couples who base their relationship on the comforting facts that they are the same colour, the same nationality, about the same age, work in the same profession, both enjoy tennis, like dogs/cats, and both smoke/don't smoke etc... ;) And there are people who base their relationship on... *something else*! (Which may of course happen to coincide with all the above). Somehow I'm more interested in things like finding out if AR regularly attends the oscars ceremony (smokers room or not) when he's not stuck somewhere filming, or generally avoids it... That would tell me more about him ;). Does anybody know? To all the questions about AR and Rima being smokers or not: Ar does not smoke, per Adam Godley, who plays Victor in 'PL', in fact no one in the cast smokes, per him ansd his wife, who plays the maid and the 'cigarettes' used onstage are herbal, no tobacco in them, which unfortunately makes them go out easily, hence all the ashtrays scattered about the set and the stubbing out of 'cigarettes', after only one or two puffs throughout the play. As to Rima, having met her in AR's dressing room, she did not smoke the entire time I was there, and according to several sources quit some time ago. As she did not smell of smoke while I was with her, I assume this to be correct, as smokers always smell like smokers. Anne O/T Warning! ;~} RE: The Oscars...I never make a distinction between actors or musicians being American or Australian or British or whatever, when it comes to being nominated for and winning awards. I do consciously think differently when it comes to Black or Latino or Asian performers being nominated for and winning awards, but it's a much bigger accomplishment, seeing as they make up *maybe* a quarter of the acting populace and as witnessed the other night, have only won 1 major category in 74 years. I just thought it was interesting that when Jim Broadbent was questioned as to feeling if there was a difference b/t how British and American actors are perceived/treated, he said no, that he never felt that way, that they were all on equal footing, trying to do their best, etc. Just an observation. Oh, and I'd love to see AR nominated for something in the future. Of the numerous times I have seen Alan or Rima and Alan and Rima, I have never seen Alan smoking and I have never seen Rima not smoking (apart from during performances but she is always one of the first out at intervals to light up in the bar). I was in New York on Sunday to see Liam Neeson in 'The Crucible'. En route to the show, I stopped by the RR theatre. The theatre exterior was bare except for the marquee which had the still from PL showing AR and LD sitting side by side but looking away from each other. I was nosy and peeked inside the glass doors and saw the box office lights were on, but couldn't see anyone inside. Hello everyone, O/T, I thought the Oscars were really good but have to admit I did feel sad at the end - it was the first time, I think, that Australia had a nomination in both Male and Female Lead category.... good to see Jim Boradbent win and I was so hoping Helen Mirren would win for Gosford Park..... I think there was a point being made last night Hey? and about time! Elizabeth,(UK) I do think that Russell Crowe has suffered enough now... do you agree?Bye. Good Morning All: Spring has finally arrived in NC and I can hear little birds chirping as I type.....lovely sunshine and breezes......Which ofcoarse brought to mind a question for our most seasoned contributers: When AR & LD came to B'way in the 80's to do Les Liaison Dangereuses, WHERE did they stay? How long did the play run here and did they enjoy living in NYC for a time? I have heard AR speak of LA but I don't know what his impressions were of Manhattan. I can imagine that he would have liked it, a bit like London....culture-wise. But I cannot find any hard copy about his experience in my home town. Anyone out there know? Where ANY of you fortunate enough to have actually seen the performance when it came to our shores? And back to PL: I imagine that AR will take temporary residence in a lovely Manhattan apartement building, possibly Central Park West or Tri-beca....... Can you imagine living in the same building? I will gladly take a summer job as a doorman, I could hail him taxis and keep packages for him, I could keep strange women at bay! I'll even wear the funny uniform! Just point me in the right direction! LOL :~) Two tickets to Private Lives in NY on Friday, June 28th. These seats are in the Orchestra, Row O, Seats 107 & 108, dead center. They will be sold for $150 for the pair or $75/ticket. If you are interested, please contact me at either of the e-mail addresses below. You will not be alone. Annette, Constance, Cakewench, Michele and myself from this GB will be at that performance. We can all hook up and do dinner or something. Just let me know if you're interested in the tickets. Please pass this information on to someone you know may be considering attending the play. Thanks! OT: regarding teeth. Seems to me I recall hearing that discoloration of teeth can occur at different stages of life - say, if a mother doesn't get the right nutrients during pregnancy, it can affect color. Celebrities claimed to have the 'world's worst teeth' British celebrities have some of the worst teeth in the world, according to a new survey. Cilla Black, Ken Dodd and Frank Skinner all made the survey's top five. The survey was carried out by BriteSmile, the teeth-brightening company who are sponsoring this weekend's Oscars ceremony. The Top 10 celebrities for worst teeth were as follows: 1. Shane McGowan "Traditionally, British people don't look after their teeth as well as people in the US, and this is reflected in the poll results. "But they are definitely becoming more aware and image-conscious. Teeth are one of the first things that you notice about a person, and first impressions can be lasting impressions." Kate Winslet was the only British star to feature on their top 20 Best Teeth chart. Robbie Williams, Denise Van Outen, Cat Deeley, David Beckham, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Carol Smillie were all entrants for Best Smile. Oscar-winner Julia Roberts was judged to have both the best teeth and smile in the UK survey of 1000 people. Each of this year's Oscar presenters due to receive a free BriteSmile treatment worth between Ģ500 and Ģ600. From Annova Thursday 21st March 2002 My comment: Well, I think this is rubbish - I wore braces on my teeth for ages, my bottom ones are still crooked. And I don't think people in the UK bleach their teeth. I asked my dentist about bleaching - he said my teeth we're naturally the colour they are, not stained. Brilliant white teeth aren't the norm. still vaguely OT- Magda, I utterly adored "Topsy Turvy" and all therein including Jim Broadbent, another actor who disappears so far into a role that he sometimes is not recognizable to the non-cogniscinti --sound familiar, AR fans? Also I sincerely applaud Halle Berry's cute and quick-thinking husband Eric Benet. I don't think she would have ceased her tears ever if he hadn't had the wisdom to stand up alone, applaud her and re-focus her right then and there, which indeed happened. She'd be crying still... Kudos as well for the incredible Denzel Washington, another favorite of this GB. Oh my, I didnīt know that mentioning the "not-perfect-white" teeth of AR makes you want to defend him like this... Iīd prefer him to be an no-amoker (I quit smoking some years ago)- but the few actors I know do smoke, and the more they work on films the more they smoke (because of the really long waiting hours... so they say). ***** To Vee. Rima being a heavy smoker is somewhere written in this unauth.biography we all know he doesnīt like. Somewhere (donīt ask for pages, I only read it one time) it says that she got her deep voice from her smoking habit, she could be called "fag-ash-Lilly"... DONīT throw stones at me... it was nearly a quote!!! I never heard her voice myself and to be honest I am not interested... itīs HIS voice that I like. And whether he smokes or not is more or less his problem, isnīt it? O.K., it would be risky for someoneīs health whose father died of cancer but every smoker knows the risk, right? I didnīt stop smoking because I realized how likely I might get cancer... I simply wanted to get pregnant... and I wanted the child to be healthy. Well maybe one of the lucky ones who are able to go to NY for PL can ask him and solve this "problem"? I can imagine heīd be quite anstonished what his fans are interested in... ;-) youīll get that rised eyebrow for sure! Valerie, I think the key to getting close seats is what day one is attending the performance. Your date, June 11th, is a Tuesday, which may not be as crowded as the date Con, Harlii and I are attending, which is June 28th, a Friday. I think Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays performances probably have sold more tickets since they are 'weekend' performances, but I may be wrong in this assumption. (Since Georgiana didn't say what date she's attending, I'm assuming it's one of the 'weekend' performances). So, for those wanting 'spitting distance' seats, I'd recommend checking several dates other than 'weekend' date performances, if possible. OT: Although I absolutely love Sir Ian, I was torn between him and Jim Broadbent, whom I have admired since "Enchanted April". He is another actor with range. And seems very humble when you see him on talk shows. I wish Judi Dench had won. She is probably my favorite actress, since I saw her in "Room with a View". Range. I was sorry that "Lord of the Rings" didn't win more. Maybe next year (I'll bet that was in voters minds. Still OT: Re Russell Crowe - I was reminded of that scene from "Patton", after Patton hit that soldier, and was made to apologize, and then was passed over for promotion. Patton says, " I wish now I had kissed him!" (Or something like that.) Re all the questions about what you should or shouldn't bring with you to the theater in NY: I am going to see "The Crucible" in NY the week after PL, and when I received my tickets, there was enclosed with them the following notice: "As a result of heightened security in all public places, please avoid bringing packages, luggage, backpacks, etc., to the theatre, as all such packages are subject to inspection and must be checked. There will be a $1.00 charge for each checked package. ... The use of cameras and other recording devices inside the theatre is strictly prohibited by law." (That last line has always been true. I would hate to think of someone disturbing the performance with a flash! But I've seen pictures on this or other sites of AR's curtain calls. Could those who go to the April performances let us know if people are taking pictures at the end? Or if they are making you check the camera?)Although this is for "The Crucible", not "PL", I would expect all the theater rules would be pretty similar. OT.....Elizabeth I'm with you.Three cheers for Jim Broadbent richly deserved. Harli, you're right about Donald Sutherland. When my husband turned the awards on last night he called me in from the next room saying that AR was the announcer. I had a heart stopping moment even though my brain was saying it couldn't be so, Constance I bought tickets from Ticketmaster this morning for June 11th and got row D. The # I used is 212-307-4100. Also if anyone has tickets for the last day I checked and Ticketmaster said it is definately Sept 8. Thank You Georgiana... but that is not fair! Totally UnDemocratic! Why it's downright Un American, I tell you! Selling blocks of tickets at one time! And I am a Platinum Amex member too! :~( Well, to have taken advantage of that deal would have left me without my dear friends to share PL with.... So I must comfort my self with that thought... and a gin & tonic after the show, the Stage Door Theatrics that is....I hope to see you there Georgiana; maybe you can catch my interpretation of The Dying Swan . :~D I'm sitting with Connie and Annette is just next to us, but I'm not worried...I mean, here in town in our Concert Hall, one can sit on the very last row in the Orchestra area (Row Z, end seat) or sumpin, and STILL see the stage and performers very well...You certainly aren't close enough to see them spit, but hell, just the fact that I am able to be there AT ALL is a blessing, so Connie cheer up dudette! We'll have a blast and I'll take some pills to prepare me for the stage door fright. ;~} Row O at RR is the 17th row or so, if I'm correct...that's fine with me...Georgiana when are you going to be there? Around the time we're there? The weekend of the 28th? Alas, Constance, my advice is to have seen it in London. New York theater seems to sell out huge blocks of seats, to groups such as visiting school teachers who bus down from Boston. I have had some luck once in NYC asking the hotel concierge to look for seats, but it isn't easy. I think there were some up front that were sold to Amex gold customers, who were allowed to purchase a week before tickets went on general sale, but it is too late now. I just bought a seat in June, also row O. Bring your binoculars. Ah, well I think no one has spoken of the Oscars because a)AR wasn't there. b) HP won nothing. c) If we talk about something off topic we get shouted at. Which is exactly why I am about to start chanting Jim Broadbent! along with Julian Fellows! Come one everyone lets have a bit of enthusiasm here. Thank god that plonker Crowe didn't get anything. And remember AR will get a solid gold one some day, especailly if we have something to do with it. Well, I got my tickets from Ticketmaster but I am sad because even paying the top price for orchestra seats, I got Row O (for OHMYGOD I am so depressed) for June 28th! I was plaqued with the thought that if I had called the RR tix office, I would have faired better, like front row center!!! So, I called this morning and they told me to call Ticketmaster!Grrrrrr. Only going in person will make a difference.Who has all the "good seats"? I must be happy! I must be grateful! Any advice? Georgiana? Help!:~( At least they're obviously real. Isn't there something known as 'British teeth' ? Also, he rarely smiles wide enough to show both upper and lower teeth. A little staining is normal. His upper teeth are mother-of-pearl. I wonder what he might think, if he read this (Note well: he doesn't!) "Why are you focusing on such a silly thing as my teeth? and not paying attention to my performance?" We are, Alan. It's just that some of us are a distracted by, well, your hands, for example. ;) If I may "weigh in" on the teeth issue: his bottom teeth are crooked, so food gets caught in them easily. This, or the English fondness for black tea (which, I have it on good authority, is second only to tobacco in its teeth-enamel-staining power) might be the explanation for the stained teeth. Then there are the two bottles of red (dark red? high tannic acid) wine he'll share with friends, once in a while. "-) This is OT, but also related, so here goes: Tonight: 8pm Emma Thompson is on Tonight With Trevor (not Ronald) McDonald on something to do with a cause of hers in Africa. On Good Friday, there is one of the 19 plays in the Beckett on Film series, called "Act Without Words 1". It's not "Play" (the one which had Rickers in) but it 's got Sean Foley, one of the guys in "The Play what I Wrote", that's on in town at the moment, directed by Kenneth Brannagh. It's on at 7.15 for quarter of an hour on Channel 4, and I will tape it.If any interested parties would then like to borrow tape, please email me. About the smoking thing - I always wondered whether he smokes after watching that scene in Die Hard. He doesn't appear to inhale at all, and I wondered whether it was the character or the actor... <astrokini@supanet.comfoo> Attention, Snape fans. I was at one of the Harry Potter fanfic sites and they're having a contest for designing Snape e-mail greeting cards. Those of you who have artistic talent may want to have a look. Several entries are already up and functional if you would like to send some "Snape mail" to anyone. *grin* To see the contest rules, scroll down past the cards to the bottom of the page. Here's the URL-- http://www.slytherinvamp.co.uk/sendcard/ Like to have a go, Claudia? How about you, Barbara the Wallpaperer? Oh, and Renie--where Lady Anne failed, "Mary Anne" shall succeed! I hope . . . *gulp* suzanne- -thanks a lot for the interview. To find some nice WAV files of AR, go to http://www.soundsamerica.com They have some nice ones from"Die Hard" Just a note: Donald Sutherland should be forced to have his vocal cords surgically reconstructed. My heart stopped about 5 times tonight as I was at the computer and heard who I thought was OB speaking at the Oscars...For about 5 or 10 seconds, Sutherland's deep baritone or bass like voice gives off significant AR vibrations...too cool...IMPOSTER...Heh...just thought I'd share... Oh, and I'm so concerned about this smoking thing that I am going to work up the guts to just ask the fellow myself at the SD in NY...I may receive the evilly raised left eyebrow, but well, he'll remember the impertinent tart with the southern accent! ;~} Laura: No one in the cast of 'Private Lives' smokes, per Adam Godley, who plays Victor and his wife, Alex, who plays the maid. Georgiana and I were lucky enough to be seated next to them at Sheekey's and we all were suffering from the inhaled smoke wafting about the restaurant. a conversation was struck up on the subject, and Mr. Godley, was most definite in his statements about non of the cast smoking. The 'cigarettes' you see on stage are herbal, with no tobacco content. There only drawback seems to be they will not stay lit, hence all the ashtrays littering the set. Hope this answers your question. Anne Hello, everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I've started yet another forum for AR fans to discuss his work online. It's a forum-style site at EZboard, called the alan rickman forum. I'm looking forward to expanding the Rickman realm and meeting some new people. (Between reading this GB, the AR e-mail lists, and as many of the other AR sites as I can, I do get QUITE a bit of Rickman discussion, but then, I am a glutton for it!) Do drop by if you have the time! Thanks,Laura. Georgiana was right though. The theatre wasn't shut for a week, only for three days from Tue 29th to Thur 31st Jan. But if you count in Monday 28th Jan, when theatre closed anyway, that makes 4 days. But yes, that isn't a week! Georgiana: Sorry, about the restaurant (Sheekeys). I got the wrong end of the stick. But I don't make "constant" accusations. I've to my knowledge made only one other one about the number of things you took AR to sign, in response to your reply to someone else on that topic. Other than that, I have always tried to be perfectly friendly. Sally - Thanks for your comments regarding AR's perfect attendance at all scheduled PL shows in London. That's quite comforting to know, hopefully the same will hold true for the NYC run as well. Sunny - I wouldn't be so quick to attribute less-than-perfectly-white teeth to smoking, many other things can cause it as well: drinking coffee, tea, cola, etc., genetics, and poor oral hygiene (hopefullly that's not the case though). I too am curious about the smoking issue as well. I've noticed that in a day when many people, particularly the more educated among us, have quit smoking, actors still seem to have a disproportionately high population of smokers. Does anybody else out there have any real evidence of AR's smoking or non-smoking habits? Hi Amy from the UK! Thanks for your hints at AR being on TV in the UK... but sigh, sigh... I donīt have satelite or something, so I wonīt be able to tape all that stuff... any nice soul out there whoīd like to help me with this? About AR smoking... well I heard somewhere that he does smoke... a quick look at his teeth might confirm that (not THAT white, are they?)... well in this unauthorised biography it says that Rima is a heavy smoker so I wouldnīt be surprised if he smokes as well... Well, did anybody find out, if PL is in the Albery in Sept. or Oct. this year? Nobody seems to know... not even the Albery itself... ooops. "an urbane, sophisticated man of the world with a dangerous charm--verbally cutting as charming, handsome, sexual, strong upper-class British dialect with high comedy skills". I dunno, that sounds like a wonderful dinner party in the making to me. *wicked grin* Despite my bringing Claire for good luck, AR did not attend any of the Richard III performances, however we did have a grand time in Sheffield--Branagh was brilliant and juicy and even visited the long bar afterwards. The run, though, was a quick sell out, for those thinking of a trip. (Some noises of a transfer though to where and when is anyone's guess.) A review will be at DT, but not for a bit yet.... And Mary Anne...thought of you when Lady Anne was trying to resist.... Oh Poo it didn't work, heres the address: http://www.filmfour.com/peopleReview/peopleReview.jsp?name=Alan%20Rickman Hope that gets someone there... Hello all, thought this link may be of interest to UK people, I'm going to try this.. don't hold your breath tho! Hopefully (if it works) this is a page that tells you when, what channel etc any AR films will be on TV for the month ahead... At the moment the UK satelite channels are showing RHPoT, TMD, Dogma and GQ. Hope it's some use to somebody. Harlii- I really don't know what to think. Hannah supposedly did an interview (she has since disappeared) and she said he smoked. I'd be disinclined to believe anything she says though (especially since I'd prefer worshipping someone who doesn't smoke) Laura; Just to try to answer your question: I saw PL a few times and only once was an understudy used-and that was for the maid's part. This is such a minor part that it wouldn't matter who played it, and it didn't- though she couldn't trip over wonderfully as the "proper" maid could! Having said that, I once asked at the box office whether understudies would be used (they never were)- and they said NO-because people paid to see AR and LD(and now, the other two as well), in the roles and that was that. When Alan was unavailable one week because of shooting commitments for HP, the whole theatre was shut for a week. They knew the public would not want to see the play unless he was in it. SO, you should be OK, I would have thought. It might be as well to check before you go though, to see if they are performing. It must be possible to demand a refund if they weren't! After all, that is what you are paying for! Thanks *G* and GML for the information. That has really been gnawing at me for a while. I was curious as well about what they make actors smoke during plays/movies, who don't normally light up. Thanks. Richard Eyre, director of "The Crudible" and showing snippets from the play, is on "Breakfast with the Arts" on A&E this morning. This would be a lovely venue for the "Private Lives" creative team. I do not believe Alan smokes. He put out all the cigarettes during "Private Lives" without a second puff. Adam Godley told us they were 'herb' cigarettes, which tend to go out on their own. We had quite a conversation at the Sheekey's about that particular form of air pollution. A few years ago the NY Times reported that A.A. Milne gave the Pooh animals to his american publishers because he had an excellent relationship with them and the sales of his books here had given him scads of money... This is fairly off topic, other than the fact that reviewers have compared Alan Rickman to Eeyore, don't you think? But I love the Ernest Shepard illustrations and have not exposed my children to those horrid Disney cartoons. I've received my "Return of the Native" and it's lovely to listen to. Alan Rickman sounds youthful, dark, and arrogant, a sterling pleasure. Just lost all self control and ordered TROTN. Far more expensive here than in US and family might have to miss a couple of meals. Please tell me it's worth it. Ah, I can't resist a vocabulary challenge... so I searched and found that many actors have been asked to explain the difference between 'understudy' and 'standby' in interviews. Interestingly, a number of them seemed just as confused by it all we are (or at least as I am). Anyway, Stephen Hope was asked to explain the difference between an understudy, a standby and a swing (I thought it was a joke for a minute ;) and his answer made sense: SH: These are the differences as I understand it. First of all, an understudy only understudies principal roles. I am a swing and an understudy. Jimmy Van Treuren is a swing and an understudy. A swing covers generally all of the ensemble and as many roles as they want to, however they want to divide that up. A standby is a different thing altogether. As I understand it, a standby is somebody who is ready to go on only for the lead. They would not necessarily be ready to go on for anybody else but the lead Of course in Private Lives there are only lead parts so to speak (apart from the maid) so I guess the terms are interchangeable in such plays. About the smoking... not sure, but this ex-smoker would say that none of the PLguys are smokers in real life... I know with what desperation you suck from the thing when you're really stressed and how you keep the smoke in your lungs as long as you can before puffing it out in one big relieved sigh, and they didn't seem to have ever experienced that... but then again these probably weren't real cigarettes. That voice all messed up by technology...surely they wouldn't dare! BTW I just worked out what is annoying about the gorgeous Sinclair- he's Tigger. Hello All. This is my first post. It has been fun reading all of your comments and following along for some time now, particularly the reports from the PL stage door. Now that the show is coming to NY, I would love to see it. However, there is one common practice of Broadway theatres that I positively detest, and it has kept me sworn off Broadway for the past several years: mic-ing the performers (ugh!). Not only do the theaters mic the actors' voices on so many shows, but then they mess around with the quality of their voices with fancy-schmancy space age sound technology--thoroughly unnecessary, especially if the actors are properly trained, which we all know this cast is. So, I'd appreciate any reports from those of you have tix for early in the NY run to let me know if they are mic'd. Also, were they mic'd at the Albery? Even if they weren't, that doesnt' mean that NY producers won't screw it up. Thanks! And to all of you who have tix for the NY show--enjoy! Can't wait to hear the reports. Does anyone know if Alan smokes? Some folks had mentioned him carrying a cigarette lighter in either a play or a movie and it looked like the same one he'd carried in another movie or play, etc. My thoughts are that in the Sense and Sensibility Screenplay and Diaries book by Emma Thompson, she mentions almost every time anyone lighted up at the set, and by name, i.e. Kate, herself, Gemma Jones, Greg Wise, etc. yet she never said, "Alan was smoking..." I thought it was interesting the first time I read it, but after this conversation about the lighter began, I remembered that about the book and just want to know what everyone else has heard. Ladyjane: Believe me if I spot AR in N.Y. I will be on this guestbook in a flash spreading the news. However since I live and work in Long Island I probablly won't. I am keeping an eye on newspapers though. Does anyone think he will take a vacation before PL? I read in an interview he went to Anguilla once and since I will be there in a week maybe I will see him there. I know it's ridiculous but I can dream, can't I? Ann, I also have tickets for the last day which I thought was the 8th. Ann from N.J.: I think you said awhile back you wanted to try to view the tapes from LLD that were being kept at a library in N.Y. I'd be interested in doing that. If you want to talk about it E-Mail me. This is a url for the Late Night TV Page, a website that list most of the late night TV talk shows, as well as Rosie, Regis and The View. It shows who are the scheduled guests for the next week or two. http://www.interbridge.com/lineups.html I also was under the impression that the terms were interchangeable, but I saw, on on payment request form, separate categories for standby, standin and understudy. Anyone know the difference? In addition to Michaele's post, I too have been curious about AR's use (or lack of use) of an understudy in the London productions of PL. Does anybody know how often, or if ever, AR's understudy had to do the play? I can only afford to make one trip to NYC and knowing my luck, it'll be the one time that AR comes down with a nasty cold or something. (I'll probably be feeling more miserable than he). If anyone has any comments or sad stories of disappointment on this subject, I'd like to hear about now rather than finding out for myself when I get down there. Jane-Of course PL should do a little (well...) UK tour! Where do I sign? As long as Lindsay promises not to run away!(very strange dream that I had a while ago) Vee, I assume 'standby' is American English for 'understudy': the actors who have rehearsed the parts and can replace the main actors on the night, should these be unable to appear on stage due to ill health, getting lost on their way to the theatre, being kidnapped by over-keen fans etc... But I must say I'm surprised they've only just started auditioning. Oh, and I hope 'Standing Room' is aired/released, whatever, some time in the next six months, so we UK residents can survive the New York 'loan'! ;) Talking of which... I hear Pooh and Piglet and Eyeore and Wol and Tigger are on exile in the NY public library? Aaargh! Can I sign the petition for their safe return? Mind you, I read Christopher Milne's version of events and it appears our furry and feathery heroes lived more in his father's imagination than in his own but nonetheless... what a shame all the Pooh T-shirts are Disney versions! (Disney stuff is fine, but the real Pooh isn't a Disney one!;) Was Mr. Rickman able to be at every PL performance in London or was it necessary for a standby actor to be used? I would imagine that they have to have someone to fill in for them in the event they become to ill to perform or have personal matters to attend to(such as a death in the family). Hopefully, for the actors and those of us attending the NYC performances, standbys won't be necessary. Iīm sorry!!!Itīs late,Iīm tired and my brain isnīt working...at least the region for the languages ;) Why are they searching for actors? Does it mean that if Pl should come back, the production wonīt have the same actors in it?... Now Iīm confused....I īve already asked my sister if she would like to go with me to London (after her marriage/honeymoon(s?) in august)...B R ,Vee Ok, all our actors out there - you got your Equity cards out? They've posted (March 22) the EPA (Equity principal auditions) for standbys. The following (edited) is from "Backstage": April 8 from 9:30 - 5:30 PM at the AEA Audition Center, 165 W. 46 ST., 2nd Fl., NYC. Equity principal auditions will be held for standbys only for the Broadway production of "Private Lives". Jay Binder Casting, casting. Rehearsals for standbys begin April 15; previews begin April 19; opens April 28; closes Sept. 6. Prepare a short monologue from any Noel Coward play. Seeking the following standbys only - Elyot Chase: late 40s-50s, role being played by Alan Rickman, an urbane, sophisticated man of the world with a dangerous charm, can be as verbally cutting as he can be charming, handsome, sexual, strong upper-class British dialect with high comedy skills, should be able to put across a Noel Coward song with ease, and be adept at physical comedy; Amanda Prynne: mid - to late 40's, role being played by Lindsay Duncan, Elyot's ex-wife, beautiful, alluring, mecurial, and irresistible, has great charm and a rapier wit, temperamental, a sophisticated woman of the world, strong upper-class British dialect with high comedy skills and adept at physical comedy; Victor Prynne (and it gives his description). (Apparently not seeking a Sybil standby.) I am concerned about the Sept. 6 closing date. I bought tickets for Sept. 8, the closing date that was listed on Ticketmaster. They haven't said anything, but now I have to check out if it will still be playing! (I also have tickets for May.) I received notification that the May tickets will be going out soon, but nothing said about the Sept. ones. Has anyone else received notification about their tickets for later months? Thanks. I FINALLY got to see TMD! I loved it! I stayed up 'til 2 a.m. and wanted to watch it all over again as soon as it ended. I have also finally gotten to see the audioclips of The View and of the Conan O'Brien interview, which I wasn't able to access from the computer I'd been using. They were great and I had to laugh out loud (fortunately this is the first day of spring break so there aren't too many people studying too hard in this library)! Oh Yes! Eeyore....... no doubt! OK so which Pooh character should our favourite actor play? Make mine an Eeyore. Thanks for the Conan links!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I watch his show almost every night. I think he's funnier than Jay Leno. And to the persons looking for a Professor Snape poster, I saw one on ebay (sorry can't make a link): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1525493423 Hey Shloka, here's the link you were asking for: AR Conan O'Brien Interview hi there! i found this page by mistake and was reading a bit in it (hope you don't mind...) and i was thinking about your problems (some of you were talking about) with movies, that are only taped on NTSC. i'm wondering wether you have problems to get these tapes or to watch it on a european VCR. i know it is possible to tape it on a PAL-version (the only thing is, it might be a wobbling picture). maybe i can help you, if you want to. just let me know, i will check this guestbook the next days. Suzanne-thanks so much for the Conan O'Brien download. I had read the transcript, but it was so great to see it. Especially since, (Oh, forgive me everyone)-only seeing him in Galaxy Quest plastic head and the horrible makeup in Dogma and Harry Potter, I was pleasantly surprised to see how fantastic he really does look! Watched the Rowling biography last night. Thought the narration of Snape's opening lecture was so pathetic next to AR's performance of same in the movie. Only a glimpse of our hero though. (Though, of course, my eyes always look towards that left end of the table no matter how far away the shot). Hopefully he won't be donated to the NY public library or go on a 10 year tour, but enjoy him anyway, you lucky people. Can't blame you Brits for worrying a bit about whether we Yanks will "return" one of your national treasures (Mr. Rickman) to his homeland. When Winnie the Pooh (the original stuffed bear owned by Christopher Milne) and his four stuffed friends were sent on a ten year tour of America in 1947, they ended up staying in New York. Supposedly A.A. Milne gave them to his American publishers, who donated them to the NY Public Library. (I'm wondering: weren't they Christopher Milne's to give away?)Anyway, although I would love to visit them, I love them enough to know that they belong back in the Hundred Acre Wood, which we all know is somewhere in England. Sorry for this long off-topic (sort of) ramble. :) Hey all! Could someone please tell me where to find the transcript of the Conan O'Brien interview with AR? Tried to download it, but major errors kept popping up. Thanks! Thanks for all the advice and kind offers last week on Snape posters, cards etc. I actually sneaked a day off work to hunt round Manchester but no luck with the posters- MVC had sold out. Is it children or is it us lot buying everything? Will try that website next. Incidentally , have you all taken a look at the Severus Snape Portrait Gallery on http://severus.1accesshost.com/snape.html ? Very tasty. Does anyone agree with me that once you transatlantic friends finally return him to us (in mint condition, please) it would be good to see PL do a little tour of Britain's provincial cities? Anyone from Newcastle, Bristol etc in agreement? Or is he too grand for us? I'd better shut up or you'll be wanting him touring the USA as well , then it would be ages before we get him back....... well, i hope you'll all be pleased to hear my site (the one that had been hacked into) is now up and running again! (i hope it works!) I'm trying to locate a copy of The Winter Guest Screenplay...I've checked on eBay and someone already snatched up the one that was listed...if anyone knows about a copy somewhere, please e-mail me...thanks! Oh, btw, Connie got our tickets to PL today!!! YAYAY! I'm excited, but more nervous about the stage door thing...I guess I'm afraid that AR will not be in a good mood. You know, that I'll seem him being rude or just generally pissy and that my image of him will be smashed and there will be nothing left for me to do, but to burn him in effigy or just break out my whip. Re a couple of the recent comments on going to the stage door after the PL performance - it is certainly a good idea to have a non-Rickmaniac accompany you. He/she can hand over the pen, duly prepared for writing, while you are standing there in a daze. Sort of breaks the freeze that sometimes sets in. Thanks for the link to the Conan interview, Suzanne. I had read the transcript way back when but watching The Man do it brings the experience to another level. I think it will be very possible that he will do some interviews with American talk shows once the play gets here to the states --Contance--we MUST learn to program the vcr timers! He seemed very at ease with Conan just as he did (in my opinion) in The View interview. For some reason, I sensed a little stiffness in the HardTalk interview that I didn't sense in Conan or The View. Is this just my imagination? Ann W.-- Papers in hand? Hm. Stool yes, black jacket overtop of shirt overtop of Tshirt yes... Papers? Not that I can recall. Water bottle, maybe. Gift baggie maybe (that was mine!). I do not remember any papers. Sarah H., Jutta, and others who were there: Do you remember this? Suzanne, Thank you. Everyone mostly talks about Alan's movies but what about his audiotape Return of The Native.? I recently purchased it and listen to it in my car on the way to work. I would highly recommend it. He does all the characters (even women) in all sorts of voices. He even sings. In N.Y. it is against the law to use a cellphone in the car. It should probably be against the law to listen to AR, definately distracting. For $30 well worth the price. Valerie, and others looking for the Conan O'Brien interview videoclip, it can be downloaded here: And to everyone who has written me e-mail and waiting for a reply, I'm really behind, so thank you in advance for your patience! Bits and pieces: A&E's Biography subject tonight is J.K. Rowling -- don't know if this includes any shots of the HP filming (might be worth watching for possible Snape sightings)... Congrats to Ben Kingsley on being knighted this past week... Sir Ian McKellen is scheduled to be a presenter at the Academy Awards on Sunday, besides being a Supporting Actor nominee, of course, as is Sir Ben. Flamingkitties: I thought for a long moment there that you were going to say that the first graphic you put up for Buckfast was done by AR! It looks like something he did before- a play poster, I think, for something he was in. We all saw it because someone put it upon the GB. I think it's still on Claire's site, or somewhere similar. Georgiana: Re. your previous posting, if I may be so bold, I distinctly remember your giving AR four or five things to sign- a play, and some nice photos, I believe. Have you forgotten? Sharon@spulsifer: If you scroll back to Thur March 21st,16.16.18, you will find how I got my tickets to PL in NY, via Ticketmaster. As I only booked them last night, the information is new and accurate. I have the tickets booked to prove it! (Oh god, that sounds awful.) Anyway, I did, and you asked!! The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards will be broadcast once again on CBS. In the spring of 2002 the network will televise this annual salute to excellence in Broadway theatre for the 25th consecutive year. The Tony Award ceremony will take place at Radio City Music Hall, for the fifth time in the past six years. Because of the large capacity of the hall, members of the general public will be able to attend the ceremony at which the American theatre's most prestigious awards are bestowed. Tickets will go on sale beginning in May. A date for the 2002 Award ceremony has not been set, but it will likely be in the first half of June. Check back here at the Official Website of the Tony Awards for more information throughout the 2001-2002 Broadway season. http://www.tonys.org/ I did it! I secured 2 orchestra seats for PL for Friday night, June 28th!!!!!!! I can't believe it! Will I really get to see it? Will I really get to meet the fab AR? SSP, The TicketMaster phone # is: 212-307-4100. Can someone tell me how to get tickets to PL in New York? If this is already on the guestbook, please forgive me. I'm back -- and I usually bring confusion, but, I think I've solved something. There is a small color photo of AR at the Masterclass Lecture in Haymarket in the November 2001 "Theatregoer." AR, seated on a stool, papers in hand, reliable black suit and black crewneck shirt. Hair and suit are bathed in a pale orange color by the overhead lighting. Is this the one someone was looking for a month back? If I didn't have a semester paper to write . . . . Lindy - Thanks for your suggestion about the pen cap. Now that'll be one more thing that I have to remember during the encounter! I have until August to prepare for it, but still, I think I'll need to bring a non-Rickmaniac with me so that at least one of us can keep a level head. Then again, after seeing PL, they probably won't be a non-Rickmaniac anymore either! Hi guys! I've updated my Alan Rickman Page with DVD pics of the Special Edition of Die Hard. Enjoy Alan! Have just watched CME off the video tape made while I was away, and it turns out its a really grotty tape.... (I'd throw it but now its got my only CME on it) Lovely story though. Er - is there anyone in the UK who's got a spare of CME on tape? Sigh! SPOILER CME By the way, I thought that if one wasn't passionately in love with one actor, the story made sense, Sinclair was annoying and casual, particularly at first, which encouraged Natalie in her obsession with Richard. I was disappointed that Sinclair's character wasn't developed further, really, it was rather opaque and potentially interesting. END OF SPOILER About going backstage after PL. For those of you who think they'll freeze, I did. Virtually just said - sign these please - I got my autographs (nice to know I have them) and a Very Nice Smile. I still think it was well worth doing, AND I pursued my devil dream. By the way, they expect you to give them a pen with the top off (good grief, spoiled or what!). There's such a lot to read here, but its always worth catching up with, hi everybody. Greetings all! Just wanted to clarify that you have 3 actresses on the pages of the guest book & this actress would like to admitt also to the odd stage fright. Harli...I'm in Alabama too. I'm going to see PL in NY in (gulp)less than a month. When are you going? I too will have at least 2 things for him to sign. A copy of my TMD screen play and of course my PL program. I'm looking forward to chit-chat... Glad I'm not the only one here who's been rehearsing for that either. Of course rehearsal or not, it will undoubtedly be the worst case of stage "door" fright in recorded history. Alas, I'm leaving the hubby at home with the baby and going with a girlfriend who lives in the city (NY), whom I'm also crashing with for the weekend. I'm counting down the days till my first "in the flesh" encounter with Mr. Rickman. And speaking of flesh...I love AABA too because Stella reminded me of myself when I first started in local theater. Wide-eyed, innocent and quite star-struck. (I'm still very much the latter when it comes to AR) Harli...please e-mail me...DARE WE HAVE 2 RICKMAN FANS IN THE SAME STATE! Scary thought! Love & Peace, jane (the lady) not much going on here then....you may or may not be reading a post by the fifth member of BuCkFaSt, irrelevant. O/T Elizabeth that is REALLY GOOD nesw about Lindsay Duncan Michael Gambon getting a nomination for the TV BAFTA"S, for Perfect Strangers!!! I watched last Sunday night and it was so good! There was a trailer at the beginning of the show and it covered a lot of the first part! Lindsay is so GOOD! Georgiana, It seems that AR was one of the best things in the Grass Widow and was seen by the right people who then got him into the Lucky Chance the following year. Apparently AR "Lolls with indolent ease as naked as he was born amongst all these images!!!" Jules Wright (An Aussie) was the producer for the Lucky chance who AR was to meet "Head On" in later years (The Rivergate Affair...) Come on, people! There's got to be someone going on May 24th or 25th! All the best tickets are gone, and Georgiana is only one person! ;-) I don't want to be obsessing alone! Meeting other Rickmaniacs is half the fun!!! Thank you, ladies...However, despite all my big talk, I will be too frightened, or rather, just in awe too much to be able to have him sign anything...I had a vision of fainting, so maybe I'll just stand to the back of the line and sop him up with my eyes... I don't know about *five* Harlii, but he certainly has signed more than one. Harlii - depends on how many people in the queue, but he seems happy to sign things for people who can't be there. I got a few things when I saw him in September, and others have got things for me from events I couldn't go to. I think the only problem would be if you take too much. He does try and see everyone. Kirsten.......NO Chit-Chat? What? I have spent a good part of this month perfecting, rehearsing, studying for, memorizing witty repartes for MY "chit-chat" with AR at the Stage Door!!!Grrrrrr!Oh..... Life just isn't fair! Okay, so he will sign things, but I want to know about the multiple signage...you know, "I need these 5 programs signed for my friends back in Jim Bob's Road Alabama, please!" I would expect an icy glare and possibly a "Move yer bloomin arse!" in reply...Anyone know how he responded to signing multiple items? I just know that Gaye and Sue asked about getting signed programs and those of us who are going together decided we'd try and split up the extras so as not to (in my mind at least) arouse his ire... Elizabeth: Thanks, by the way. Gosh! Two real live actresses on these pages! Hazel and Walks the Boards. Could these be pseudonyms for, let's see: Helen Mirren and Lindsay Duncan? Annette, and all PL going, interested parties: Just thought you might like to know I rang Ticketmaster last night from London. The number you want is (001 from UK)- 212-307-4100 and they answered pretty quick-after they'd finished giving out the adverts! (The other number somebody quoted is for concerts, I think (the 4100 end bit is specifically for plays)). I was also armed with a seating plan of the theatre from www.playbill.com. which was exceedingly useful. The guy was very helpful, didn't rush, answered all my questions; in all, impressive service (and a very impressive phone bill!). All the seats in the stalls (the orchestra, as it is called)were $75 (too much!) but the nearest I could have got (in the stalls) was row T in the centre seats, way back, but I would have had them if they weren't so expensive. So, I ended up getting seats not so far back in the "mezzanine" or what we call the circle. These are all priced at $50-still an arm and a leg, to my way of thinking, but better than the $25 seats in the "Gods", nosebleed, or whatever you call them area, the "balcony" above. This was for a mid-May visit, so, as someone else said, get booking! Michaele, Mr. Rickman is very gracious about signing all sorts of things at the stage door (except for that book--the 'unauthorized' biography, which he will not sign)--posters, photographs, playscripts, books, etc. Kirsten: I was wondering about your comment about AR being annoyed at autographing video, ect. I was planning on taking my S&S screenplay book and the WLS book. Did he seem to mind signing such things? I'm taking my husband with me(who is also a pretty big fan) to the stage door of PL, and I'm counting on him to help me not stand there like a bumbling idiot! Press night for Private Lives is scheduled for April 28. So get all those vcr's ready to tape all the tv news reviews that night(sure to show a scene or two) and get all the newspapers the next day! Yes, I know it's still more than a month away - but I'm just getting prepared! Sorry,I forgot: From *The Unauthorised Biography* (by Maureen Paton) Hey Ho,here is a....ohm...text? about his thoughts because of AABA: Barnes said:* I think he was worried about all the attention on Hugh Grant.Plus I have the impression they didnīt get on in AABA*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Further: Not many people know, however, that Alan Rickman was offered the role of the waspish,cold-hearted (homesexual) Meredith first. The casting would have made a great deal of sense.*I asked Alanīs agent if it was the case that Alan doesnīt want to play villians*, remembers Newell (AABAīs director?!).*He said yes, that was the case, but Alan would like to play tha part of P.L. OīHara instead.*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(then something about the bad relationship between Alan and Hugh)....*It was a great moment of revelation for Alan at the end of the film when OīHara realises that heīs the father of Stella, the girl heīs seduced. He played the version without words;we had two versions. He said to me "I know what youīre going to ask me,to do it without words". ~~~~~~~~~~~NOW:....And Alan himself admitted in a location interview on Barry Normanīs Film 95:"Itīs a strange film to be doing in a way,a bit like being a vulture on your own flesh...we have actors playing actors, using a satge for a film set and using our own lives as raw material.Georgina is remarkable...she claims to be seventenn but Iīm going to put it out that sheīs forty-three." He reminisced about his own dasy in rep:!I had to haul up my oen cross because I was Inquisitor and ASM at the same time for a production of Shawīs St Joan. And then I had to put the kettle on.Everyoneīs memories of rep have that kind of mixture- pleasure and pain."~~~~~~Ok,maybe, more will follow, but at the moment is it enough.Enjoy the *text* :)....B R,Vee The screenplay for "Waiting for the Healer" (from the book) is by Conor McDermottroe. At his resume at the PFD Agency website it says that the movie "is to go into production soon". Forgot to Add: AR gets very very nervous before a play. there are several interviews with him in which his building anxiety is described. He discussed still having stage fright at his Masterclass in 2000, and it was quite clear that he wasn't just trying to console the amateurs. Constance: The title of the book was "Waiting for the Healer"--something about some burnt-out Irish guy and a pub. There's always a pub... Tsk. AR was going to produce the film. Ann-I met AR at the stage door of PL and there were swarms of people. My friends were too in awe to meet him face to face; and watched 'from a distance.' My advice would be don't barge to the front, or try to make conversation for the sake of it. Just wait patiently at the back. We went on a friday evening so it was v.busy. There were about forty people waiting. If you wait at the back it is less rushed because most of the crowds have dispersed, by the time it comes to your turn. Besides, queing gives you time to decide whether to say anything or not! As for your husband, could he 'watch from a distance?' This is what partners and friends were doing whilst the AR admirers were getting his autograph. What appeared to annoy AR were those who made 'chit chat' and asked him to sign videos/hankerchiefs, so be warned! As a side note the adaptation is wonderful.I wish I could see it again and am in complete envy of New Yorkers. If any New Yorker hasn't booked tickets and is reading this, go see it...it's great fun! I agree WTB...When I worked in P.R. I was constantly in front of large groups of people, many times strangers, presenting various topics for my clients, and I always was at least slightly nervous...I speak well publicly...I've performed (singing) in front of arena sized crowds, alone and with other well-known singers, but I ALWAYS feel that adrenaline rush that almost makes me faint the seconds before I open my mouth...I would think it's only natural and to not feel ANYTHING might be considered by some as somewhat abnormal... A true actress never gets nervous? My god, you must be joking! Having done commercials, plays, and rep, I can't recount how many times myself and other castmates sweat bullets, puked, and just about had heart failure in those agonizingly long moments before the curtain rises. Didn't someone we like to talk about once describe being on stage as 'buttock clenching terror'?? "Real" actors don't get nervous, hmm? What a laugh! We're actors, we just hide it well. I just finished reading the play of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses", the whole time picturing AR as Valmont. So seductive and so evil. For anyone in the northern NJ area, the National Players ("America's longest running classical touring company") will be at John Harms Theatre Friday March 22, 2002 at 8PM doing "Les Liaisons Dangereuses". http://www.johnharms.org/ It's not Alan, but I may go see it anyway. Question for our knowledgable friends in the UK: when you went to see PL with your husband or significant other, what did they do while you were trying to converse with AR? My hubby and I will be going in May, and already I feel like an idiot at the thought of him standing there while I gush over AR. I mean, I will try to carry on a witty, scintillating conversation with the Man, but obviously I will be lucky if I am able to do more than just stare at him, mesmerized, as it were. Any thoughts? Re: first role, filming what is called a "love scene" with AR. . . . as the song goes, "Nice Work / If you can get it." Tsk, tsk, tsk! ;)

Since Coward died almost thirty years ago, I (Sheridan Morley-writer of this article) have been literary executor of his estate, and in all those years I have never seen a better PL than this one, and for a very simple reason. Ever since Noel and Gertie premiered the play back in 1930, the casting problem has always been in finding a perfectly -matched duo who actually look as though they belong together even after divorce and marriage, which is, ofcourse, what the play is all about. AR and LD do just that, for 15 years ago, it was they who (again for the director Howard Davies)premiered Christopher Hampton's award-winning adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses on both sides of the Atlantic. So, from the very first rehearsal of this new PL, they came as a pre-existing couple, albeit one who hadn't worked together since. Second excerpt: The last time Lindsay was in Broadway was for Pinter's Ashes to Ashes . She says: 'We played to some deeply mystified and sometimes quite angry subscription audiences; one woman was overheard saying to a friend,"And they have the brass balls to call this a play?" Somehow I rather liked that.' And it's not as though anyone is likely to say the same about Private Lives .

Also, the amount of drugs taken such as antibiotics can have some bearing. For instance, in a case where a child has had to take lots of drugs prior to getting their permanent teeth.
The drugs may not be an explanation for any color problems with teeth that AR may have. But given that he was born in early '46 when rationing was still very much used, getting the correct amount of proper foods is a possiblity. It may not explain the crooked teeth though. Of course, I could be totally wrong! I agree with you Claudia, though -- bright white teeth are not the norm.
