Greetings, all:

Re: the recent discussion on plagiarism. I do not mean to muse on this topic, since I think the advice to discontinue it (that was you, Chris?) is well-considered. The point has been made.

One of the high points of this site, for me, is that there is room for so many different viewpoints and styles: fans of all ages, statements both exuberant and subdued. This place is a gold mine, both in the Guestbook for facts about AR's latest doings and over in Flights of Fancy for the "fictioneers"--and we all thank you once again, Karina, for having given us FOF to "play" in. (grin) Looking forward to being in the FOF cloud site once again . . . HTML . . . *sigh*

Anyway, I think we can still call ourselves ladies and gentlemen here. We have our disagreements from time to time, but in general I am proud to find myself in such consistently civilized and intelligent company.

Occasional "bumpy" passages notwithstanding. 8-)

Salutes,

Hi, I've been a fan of Alan Rickman for a number of years. The first time I saw RHPOT I was swept away. Ive been lurking around the guest book for some time now and decided to finally make myself known. To say the least it has never been boring! Though I have to admit I was slightly shocked at the ..uh...interesting links listed under 'other performers'. Is all that x-rated stuff supposed to be there? Bye

Enough already, ladies (if I may call you that). I, for one, was happy for Stezi that she had the enthusiasm for my favorite actor to go to the trouble to put up the pictures on her site. I love her energy and her willingness to share with us. But enthusiasm seems to bring out the wrong side of some of the posters to this guestbook. I don't know what it is, but they always seem to want to put a damper on the enthusiasm of those who really enjoy Alan. If you own the copywrite on the photos Stezi, or anyone else for that matter, uses contact them directly. There are plenty of photos out there on the net that don't belong to the site owner and the copywrite owner is the one that must deal with it. Lets, stop being so pedantic and get off this topic. Enjoy Stezi's exuberance and participate in it, you might feel better.

Looks like AR is just about ready to leave the Dogma set in Pitt. KS posted the following to his View Askew board:

Tomorrow (if the weather holds) will be Alan's last day.

pla*gia*rize \ 'pla-je-riz\ vb -rized; -rizing vt [plagiary] (1796) a. to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
b. use (a created production) without crediting the source ~ vi : to commit literary theft
c. present as new or original an idea or product derived from an existing source -- pla-gia-riz-er n
Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary

It is time that Stezi familiarize herself with simple courtesy. One doesn't use the photos/artwork etc. of another web site without permission. After getting permission, it is expected that credits will be conspicuous on the new page. I suspect if Mr. Rickman were running his own web site, he would do no less.

It comes down to thoughtfulness for other people's work and integrity about your own.

sorry, I seeem to have submitted to the wrong guestbook. Anyhow,I just got back from Seattle, being there on family business. Not too much in the papers about the film fest. Those of you lucky enough to go, please fill us in on all the details..It was a pleasure to come back, visit all the web sites and guestbook and catch up on all the news. Netiquette is a delicate thing--but there's one quick, simple way around the issue of intellectual property (or, for that matter, borrowing someone else's work): cite your sources.

If you borrow something (a photo, for instance)--cite your source (the book, the magazine, the photographer, the web page....) If you're quoting lyrics--mention the writers. If you're quoting text--prose or poetry--cite your source. If you're paraphrasing, note that and perhaps leave a query--it's a big, wide, wonderful net, and someone will know the source material.

It's a sign of the times, I guess, that some folks have gotten--let's be kind here, and say "careless"--about borrowing without giving credit where credit is due. And that's not confined to web pages (although it does seem to be rampant in cyberspace). A good friend of mine works in Business Affairs for a studio here, and their Intellectual Properties department is being run ragged due to an association with a producer/director who shall remain unspecified. Let's just say that p/d's alleged theft of intellectual property was well-publicised.

There are writers who contribute to this page and to FOF, who, I'd bet, would not look favorably on someone ripping off their work. Why tempt karma--cite your sources and sleep the untroubled sleep of the innocent.

Or, as I said about a writer recently: "He had an original idea once--it died of loneliness." After the laughter died down, I continued: "I stole that. If anyone knows from whom, please let me know--I'll forward the laughs."

Hi everyone! I know it's been forever since I posted, but I've been quite busy with my new job. Anyway, I just wanted to say to Stezi: I think all any of us are saying is just to give credit where credit is due. I have an AR picture on my page, also, and I gave Claire the credit. It's no big deal, really. Well, that's my two cents worth. Bye for now!

Just wanted to add my thanks to everyone who put so much effort into their pages. I appreciate ALL of them. I am "internet shy", and though I have visited all the AR sites regularly, I have not entered my thanks on your individual addresses. Dear Rickmaniacs. Just a little note: The pics I have on my Page I scanned (copy or original) or I got them from Internet (Claire's Page f.e.). I never said they were all mine. All I want to do is to decorate my Pages as well as I can (for me, for you). People who are not pleased, don't have to visit my Page again. It's just for fun. Sorry guys, don't be offended. My Pages are for you all. And only for that reason, I will continue. Stezi

I was just thinking that the internet is such unchartered territory that we should all try to give each other the benefit of the doubt before criticizing. I think the protocol or "net etiquette" is to acknowledge the site or person that an image or info. comes from but I'm no expert! I think the owners of the AR websites do an incredible labor of love that we all get to appreciate so kudos and many thanks to Karina, Claire, Stezi, Emma,KelClancy, Gilda, Claudia, Renie and the F0F gang --- my goodness how this has all grown because of AR and Karina's guestbook! Wow! What a neat site! Someone posted the url on a cruise newsgroup I frequent and as an Alan Rickman from way back, I had to peek! Wish I could come to Seattle, too! I first discovered Alan Rickman as the deliciously slippery, slimy Slope, which must have been in the early 80's. Then in 1985, I was in Stratford and our group went to see As You Like It at the Shakespeare Theater. One of the actors positively jumped out at you...it was Alan Rickman, I found out later when I read my program. I was stunned and have been watching for him ever since. Love this site....I've bookmarked it!

In my opinion Claire's page is STILL the ultimate!

Many of the AR pictures on Stezi's page were lifted straight from Claire (as well as other Rickman sites). These people took the time to locate and scan these photos themselves. If you have originals or new items to share, we'd love to visit your page too but please don't pilfer these things from others and then pass them off as your own.

I apologize for my rudeness but Claire has put a lot of work into her page and it will always be the first place I look to see the latest/greatest AR material.

Just something to keep in mind (all of you who are coming to Seattle for DkH) .. AR may not be listed as an official guest of the Film Festival, but that doesn't mean he won't be here. Cristina (sp?) Ricci is in town promoting a couple of films that are being shown at the festival .. films in which she stars. She is not listed as a festival guest but has been spotted many times (including my workplace) over the last week. So, that's just a little something to keep in mind .. as well as (hopefully) a little something to lift your spirits!

For those who are interested:

Judy Hofflund is producing "8 Millimeter" -- a film starring Nicholas Cage, Joaquim Phoenix, and (well, what do you know?) Norman Reedus -- with her partner-in-crime, Gavin Polone (the two head up Hofflund-Polone). It is due to be released late this fall. Filming started in February of this year. Scheduled shooting locations (thus far) are in Miami, New York, and LA.

Julia, I, and I think most of us regulars, read your comment exactly as you intended. Don't stop being oppinionated because of one person. This reminds me of when people were getting upset about a Christian group writing an anti WG article. As the lovely Patsy said in AbFab some people are so a r they can't sit down for fear of sucking up the furniature. That's a r in LOWER CASE not as in his initials. Didn't want to offend any sensibilities by using offencive language!!!!!!

Excuse me!!! What is this? I go on the GB innocently, stating the facts, saying that I think that the fact that they snubbed AR yet again for LLD is disgusting, and someone turns me into a homophobic??? I don't think so! So, now whenever I say something I'm going to be attacked and people are going to have a personal vendetta against me? I have absolutely no interest in anyone's sexual orientation because I think that it has no relevance. I'm glad that there is someone out there who appreciates AR's work for purely proffesssional reasons and not sexual attraction, and I don't think that your bitterness should spill out against me! So excuuuuse meee for stating my opinions. That's the way I am-opinionated. And, if you can stand another opinion from me, next time you have a snide comment to make, please email it to me in private, instead of embarrassing both of us in public. I apologise for wasting GB space in defending myself. Re-Judy Hofflund- very good! If she is connected to AR, we can count on her to come up with a worthwhile project. (Or is that too opinionated ???)

What curdles one person's blood may enflame another's! (Not everyone on this page is straight.) But as to Dark Harbor: the Hollywood Reporter of 4/14 styled it "a gem of a movie...a genuine grabber that is a cinch to get talked about." An earlier (9/24/97) article claimed that nothing in the film is what it appears to be. I (for one) shall make no assumption or premature judgment about film content or the state and quality of Rickman's psyche. He's spoken of enjoying "the animal pleasures of acting" after 18 months on TWG. His pleasures are bound to be ours. Striding toward Seattle in my rattlesnake boots--

Something in the newspaper today: "Fans of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer show will see a whole new side of star Sarah Michelle Gellar in her new movie, Cruel Inventions. Going Brunette isn't the half of it. The TV sweetheart does some deep tongue kissing with co-star Selma Blair in the modernized version of Choderlos de Laclos's 18th century novel Les Liasons Dangereuses (already filmed twice before). The story is now set in suburban Connecticut, but the filmmakers apparently thought it important to keep the smooching French-just for historical accuracy." Doesn't that just make your blood curdle? Old habits die hard.

DkH-hmm. doesn't it sound just a leeeetle bit like CME? Perhaps with a dash of TJM? The idea has merit, but why does it sound like yet another dark Hollywood thriller through which you sit and wait for the likes of Morgan Freeman or Kiefer Sutherland to walk across the screen? I mean, I'm sorry if I'm being harsh, but all I keep thinking is, "Why is AR's character yet again the victim?" Come to think of it, this could lead to a whole discussion about Mr. Rickman's psyche. I'm squinting so I don't read the DkH summary--I want to be surprised!

Melissa, you asked about Patrick Doyle's health. This was his own message left on the GB of Ignasi Nogues.

"I would just like to thank everyone for their very positive and kind thoughts during one of the most difficult times in my life. Thank you for all your kind messages on the net and to all the wonderful cards that I received. I am convinced your positive thoughts helped me to get through this tough period. I have now been given a clean bill of health and have never felt better!"

"I also wanted to say that I don't think I would be here now without the wonderful treatment I received in the Ruth Myles Unit at St Georges' Hospital, Tooting. I am convinced that all your positive thoughts coupled with the hospital's tremendous work with this disease, helped me through this difficult time."

Just passing that on.

Seattle, - Thu May 21 18:57:09 EDT 1998
DkH summary provided courtesy of Seattle Int'l Film Festival and Nancy Currier (who found it for us!):

David (Alan Rickman), a successful lawyer, and his beautiful wife, Alexis (Polly Walker), have settled into a relatively comfortable marriage despite the disapproval of Alexis's widowed and wealthy mother. Racing to catch the day's last ferry so they can take a weekend off at their island cottage, they come across an injured young man at the side of the road and stop to help him, despite David's trepidation. The young man says he will be fine, but Alexis insists that he accompany them to the nearest inn, where they can all bed down for the night and catch the ferry for the island together the next morning. When the next day arrives, Alexis invites the young man to join them at the cabin, and David begins to suspect that Alexis is interested in more than the young man's welfare. So begins this taut, psychological thriller, a twisted journey through a tangled thicket of lust and intrigue, featuring remarkable performances by each of its rapidly ascendant stars. Rickman and Walker are, as always, deliciously watchable in their roles as the less-than-idyllically married couple David and Alexis, but it is newcomer Norman Reedus, also featured in this year's SIFF entries Floating and Six Ways to Sunday, who brings this gripping drama its dark, ambivalent edge.

Doesn't it sound awesome? :-D

The production dates aren't always helpful, however, in figuring out which film is going to be released first. Post-production time, and the ever important marketing (summer blockbuster? winter-y Holiday fare? Or the fall--when all of Woody Allen's films are released) play a huge role. I think it's a good bet that DkH will play more film festivals--and the Mill Valley FF is coming in the fall here in Norcal--although I don't want to wait until then! (Where does the time go?) Emma--A vampire story, you think? Weren't some of the GB fanning a while back over the thought of Rickman as the Count?

Back to reality: Since Dogma is wrapping (Kari reports) will he be leaving for Hawaii to shoot TM&S?

Hi all! Glad to hear all the rumors about upcoming movies. It's nice to look forward to a film that doesn't have a giant lizard in it. I have a bit of trivia about the angel Metatron. It's a little bit long to post, but I'd be glad to send it to interested parties. Basically, Metatron is Heaven's secretary -- legend says, aside from logging all the celestial and earthly doings, he also carries prayers up through 900 heavens to God. He also may be one of the seven Archangels -- Heaven's elite, allowed to stand before the face of God -- with Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Uriel. Source: "Know Your Angels" by John Ronner.

Thanks Claire, you always make my day. Just have to figure out how to print that CL shot so that I actually get HIM in the frame. My parents have finally got me a copy of Return of the Native. It's on CD, and won an award of some sort. anyone know more? I won't get my hands on it till August but Dad said the award was for 1997?

Maxine: The way I remember that BTS of MC bit . . . AR is told that the hundreds (thousands?) of extras he will speak in front of are all volunteers. They could not afford to pay that many people. Then he's supposed to have said "Thank you for telling me that"

Here's a obscure piece of AR trivia that I have been meaning the post. In my area (East Coast) there is a channel called "The Outdoor Life Network" (of all places). I was happening through one day when I saw AR! They were doing a piece on the gentleman (Dan Speaker, I believe his name was) who did the majority of AR's training for the sword fights in RHPOT. It was just on for a moment, but it DID make my day! I'm sure that the training only accentuated his fluid manner of moving on stage, the set....etc....

I ordered the TWG soundtrack on Sunday from HMV and, if all goes well I should recieve it in three weeks. Then again, if I think I heard right, I could be getting the winter gift! Oy. Anyway, for those of you interested in more music, on the same trip I saw a CD of the movie music of Michael Kamen. He did the music for RHPoT, DH, and most recently, TWG. What brightened up my day was that the piece from DH was titled "Takagi dies." I have a twisted sense of humour, but hey! "I will count to three, there will not be a four..." If I don't check in before, I hope that the lucky ladies in Seattle enjoy the movie and I expect to hear all about it!

Dennis Potter was the prolific and one-of-a-kind writer who created the original screenplay for Mesmer.
Didn't someone post here quite a while ago the tidbit that Greg Wise plays the Bill Gates-esque character in Judas Kiss? Speaking of which, we could go back and read the commentary of last fall when the two movies were in production if earlier Guestbooks were still available (but if you're looking for Get Rich Quick opportunities, check out the additions to the Other Links).

And on the 21st of May, after the BTS of Michael Collins [(Alan is only in the scene of the speech before the crowd, no personal interview but info about when he filmed it and was told he was to speak in front of the crowd the next day, that he said very quietly (maybe in shock), "Thank you for telling me that." Anybody can do better on this story, please do. I don't relate things well!], is a Profile of Dennis Potter, the director? of Mesmer. Doesn't say anything about Mesmer in the blurb, but who knows. Hi all!

Here' a ~tiny~ bit of news re: Judas Kiss:

This morning, while getting dressed, I had Good Day New York on the television. One of the guests was Gil Bellows, the actor who plays Billy on Ally McBeal. The interviewer said something along the lines of, "I understand you're going to be appearing in a movie with Emma Thompson." This is when I started to pay attention. Mr. Bellows said, "Yes, it's a movie called the Judas Kiss." This is when I stopped tying my boot laces and gave the TV my full attention. :-) Here's the little plot summary he gave:

He (Mr. Bellows), and two or three other actors whose names I can't remember play kidnappers who kidnap a Bill Gates type character. Emma Thompson is on their trail. Here, the interviewer cut in with, "Emma plays the detective...?" and Mr. Bellows said, "Actually, Emma is the FBI agent, Alan Rickman plays the detective." {Hooray, sounds like a good-guy role for AR!} {{Although, if someone actually kidnapped the real Bill Gates, I just might think of the kidnapper as a "good guy", but I digress... }}

He went on to say that the film would be out "hopefully in the Fall".

It might not be much, but this is shaping up to be a horrendous week for me, so it really made my day!

Take care!
Trish

This is pure speculation since I don't know a thing about Dark Harbor, so don't take it to be a fact, please:
After viewing the photo at www.settlefilm.com/Lasso.acgi (two actors -- not AR -- with dark circles around their eyes), seeing that the director has done 3 other thrillers, and since I'm addicted to puns (seeing that Rickman said "in the vein of...") could it be that DkH be somewhat of a vampire story, perhaps like The Hunger?
I'll find out once the film opens!
I know, yesterday I said I dared not guess...

Sounds like our man is the cuckolded husband again, with the added interest of being bisexual? Maybe? Well the part would have to offer some new challenge to attract him. He's turned down other roles of alternate sexual orientation, like Meredith in AABA and J. Pryces's role in Carrington. Perhaps he feels he and we (the public) are ready to dive into part which might be a bit more confrontational. I can't wait. By the way, DkH is a great acronym. Saves confusion with Die Hard. Any news on the release of the Judas Kiss, it seems an eternity since filmin?. Didn't it predate DkH?

Kelly: Yes, Deb is right. I've had confirmation from another source as well that AR has been experiencing back problems as of late (I'm sure those wings didn't help!)and had to take a "break" from acting for a while. Now on the mend, he's expected back to work shortly. The poor man is falling apart .. first the knee, then the back. I hope he never comes to the conclusion that acting is bad for his health!

Maxine: Alan himself describes DkH as "a strange love story in the vein of The Crying Game" .. he also allows that he plays a lawyer and husband. Now, I don't know how many of you have seen The Crying Game but he's got me wondering which particular vein(s) he's talking about .. ===:-o

I have always said that AR has fluffy hands, and now I find that I am right! (squeak of joy) Stezi, you spoil me entirely too much. All my favourite people, on one page. Yum. And Claire- Mesmer- wow.... There's a movie I have to see. Speaking of which, I watched the January Man on the weekend, and Ed is quickly becoming my favourite AR character to date. So quirky! I especially loved the tie and the scarf. Those were a nice touch. Does anyone know if there's going to be an AR movie in Cannes this year? Or will I have to find out myself? Oh, the anticipation... I saw Les Miserables as well, and though I thought Liam Neeson was up to his usual tricks (ie: waving his limbs around to give the impression that he's moving) I thought it was pretty good. Geoffrey Rush was fantastic, though. He deserves another Oscar! Michael Collins-did anyone else notice that part where DeV is getting under the blanket in the car and MC says "Remember, you're my chief, " (or something of that nature) and AR salutes him? I love that bit!

Hello! I have been a fan of Mr. Rickman's ever since Robin Hood where I fell in love with the "really adorably evil man in black" and ignored the movie's star Mr. Costner! I have since seen most everything he has done - including a play in London several years ago(1991) called "Tango at the End of Winter". I buzzed over to London and had 4th row center seats for the play on both a Friday and Saturday night. As an actor myself, I have never been so moved by a play and especially by the performance so beautifully offered up from Alan. I met him backstage on both nights. The first night I got his autograph and a picture - totally touristy-fan stuff. The second night I held back and made sure I was the last one to speak with him and we spoke for about 3 minutes on the play and actors. He was delightful, generous, unassuming, shy and so handsome in person that I thought I had gone to heaven. I had brought him a red rose on the second night and he promised to take it home and put it in a vase! What a weekend - what a man - what amazing talent and humility. Susan

Synopsis of Dark Harbor provided by the Seattle Film Festival folks: A bickering couple drives fast through a downpour to catch the last ferry to their island retreat. In a flash, they notice a crumpled body lying at the side of the road; after much argument they stop to help the battered and bruised young man. An offer of summoning the police firmly rejected, the two help the man as best they can, although it certainly means missing the ferry...and so starts this thriller: a tale of twisted sexual attraction and ulterior motives.

Also in reply about AR being a career spoiler: In my opinion, Die Hard 1 was a huge success, thanks to AR's fabulous performance. As a result, Bruce Willis's career as an action hero was born. I think AR's talent, training and hard work show through in his excellent character portrayals. Most importantly, he has great charisma, that special characteristic that draws the eye (or ear!) to him when he is in a scene, and I think you have to be born with charisma; it's not something you can learn.

Valerie, When I checked for ROTN my public library told me, too, that they never, under any circumstances order audio tapes. period. End of discussion. So I went to my University library and asked if they could look for it because I knew from the guestbook that others had gotten it on loan and I gave them the ISBN # and they said they usually don't because other libraries just didn't send them thru interlibrary loan but they would try. Twice they e-mailed me saying my book was in and finally I got e-mail that the tapes were in...and they were! They had found them from a library in Wisconsin and I had them for two glorious weeks! So don't give up...if there's a university or college nearby it wouldn't hurt to try there. Good luck!

In reply to Eva... I don't think AR is a career spoiler, just a hard act to follow. Kevin Costner has never been a good actor. DWW was unusual for its time and nicely shot. Unfortunately for anyone who has studied anything about native Americans it is a big joke with a lot of nice scenery. I have watched Greg Wise and Liam Neeson in other movies and they are good but they lack range. I just saw Les Miserables and it is wonderful... but Liam is still Liam, he was supposed age in the movie and I never noticed any difference. One of the great things about AR is his range. He is different in every role, some people don't even realize they are watching an actor they have seen before. Many people I have discussed movies with, ask me who he is, and I usually end up giving the stock answer (remember the villian in Die Hard 1). Then they are amazed when I start naming off everything else he has done. Most of them have seen quite a few of his films and really enjoyed his performances but never connected the roles to one actor. I can't think of any other actor who is able to perform this feat every time. Others pull it off once in a while, but never constantly.

Sandra - yes, I watched FFTMC last night. My feelings are a bit mixed about it - generally enjoyed it,and particularly liked Nathaniel Parker as Gabriel Oakes. Is that the American NP and are we seeing a bit more cultural cross-fertilisation here? My old fave Peter Finch was the Boldrewood in the Julie Christie version back in the '70s and of course I would have found him irresistible! I felt that sometimes there were real jumps in the story line, other times it seemed to lag considerably. (Nit-picking department - the farm from the front looked a bit too neat and tidy and 1990s 'beautiful gardens of Britain' for realism.) And the production looked a bit letter-boxy to me? Will there be a cut down film version released?

Hi all .. just made my daily visit to Claire's page (yes, I'm addicted!) and just gasped my way through her new pics. They're great .. do have a look when you have time .. definite swoon material for any of you who are interested.

Claire .. thank you for sharing these with us. Your page often makes my day! :-)

And a brief aside .. my sis just got back from a visit to NYC and sat next to Liam Neeson at dinner on Friday night (he was at the table next to hers). She said he was with two other men [he was in town to see his wife in Cabaret(?) I believe she said] but didn't know who the two other men were [unfortunately, she wouldn't know AR from a hole in the wall .. her friend had to tell her who Liam was]. I just kept thinking "what if .." (sigh)

Have you tried *renting* ROTN from somewhere? I just rented Blind Corner from Chivers (first time rental from them was free .. such a deal!) and I get to keep it for a month before I have to send it back. Chivers # is in Karina's FAQ under "Where can I find his audio books?" .. perhaps give them a try. I didn't ask about ROTN because I've already heard it (my knees are still quaking), but they may have it available for rent as well. Just a suggestion .. :-)

Good morning, Maniacs; Here's a little bit of news I swiped from a wire service this morning: "Spacey Feted in London" LONDON (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is bringing Hollywood hoopla to a tiny backstreet theater in north London. After rave reviews, the British press dubbed him Tinseltown's hottest star and dared to ask if he is the finest actor of his generation. The Oscar-winning actor, the token American in a 19-person cast, in Eugene O'Neill's ``The Iceman Cometh,'' is pocketing a less-than-glittering $418 weekly wage for six weeks at the 303-seat Almeida theater. --------------------------------------------------------- To the U.S. Maniacs: Did anyone watch "Far from the Madding Crowd" on "Mobil Masterpiece Theatre" last night? Comments? RE: The "spoiler effect": I like the idea! I agree with the person who pointed out that comparing AR with some of his costars is like comparing McDonald's to Maxim's. Mickey-D's is perfectly good at what they do, but hardly Cordon Bleu. Another observation: Maybe AR is "better" with women because he enjoys the kind of interaction he can get with them. Or maybe the women are just plain better than the men! (Relax! It's a joke!) It isn't often a woman carries a film as the headliner the way a Kevin Costner or Bruce Willis does, so the effort might be greater all around.

Valerie, I have worked interlibrary loan for years and i have not heard of a library not trying to borrow an audio for their patron. I know most libraries "out of state" dont like to lend AV. Main reason is funding (money) If you use record OCLC # 15511815, Mansfield Richland (OMN) in Ohio and either Houston or Dallas in TX (use symbol) IGA are in a habit of lending AV out of state. Try those. If your library doesnt try to borrow AV for you, alas, go to another library.

Hi guys, I was just wandering, when I was in London in 1992, I met an Alan Rickman fan in the subway. It was on a Monday night in September, and next to me sat an American girl who just came from "Hamlet". She told me that she had been backstage and had met Alan, and even touched his hand which was 'warm and soft'. It was just a brief encounter, but was this any of you lot? Bye the way, the first film in which I saw Alan was RHPOT, for me it was just another action movie, but then came the sheriff, and suddenly the whole thing became very interesting, that voice, these eyse, that humour. From that moment on I was a fan. So I'm very pleased to keep up with the career of 'our hero' through the GB, thanks! Angela

One subject for discussion: Is Alan Rickman a career spoiler for some of his costars? I cannot help notyicing that up to RHPOT Kevin Costners was considered a good actor, He even got an Oscar normination for DWW. HG was considered a good actor following FWAAF. Two movies in a row with AR led to a number of reviews pointing out a significant difference in the size of their talents - and what more it was not just the critic who suddenly could notice that HG, considereded the most charming of actors, was technically so week, that h hardly could make an entrance in a period costume. And what about Greg Wise. Normally a role of the stature of Villoughby should have assured him a solid followship on the net and elsewhere. Instead his potential fans are here and at Pemberley.com discussin not his appeal and talent. but that of the actor playing the caracter, considered weak and uninteresting by literary critics in 200 years. I could ad Liam Neeson and others to the lists. Butas conclusion I think that Juliet Stevenson and Kate Winslet are the only AR major co-stars who did not end up with a downgrading in their marks following a movie with AR. (or Geraldine McEvan) It will be interesting to see if Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will keep their golden boy image following Dogma. I do not think that AR is doing it on purpose, and the weaknesses of other actorswould have been significant down the line, but a significant numbers of stars ended up in an artistic Waterloo following an encounter with AR. Another subject I read in Variety March that Miramax have not yet paid The Almeida 14.000 in compensation for cancelling two performances of Ivanow so Ralph Fiennes could attend the Oscars. They think RF should work out the compenstion. Poor Rafe. With his salery of 200£ each week, it would take him 70 weeks to make that kind of money.

Valerie, you say your library won't get AR's audio tapes? Get back to the person or department that gave you that info and demand an answer as to WHY. Ask for *specific* reasons, and don't be satisfied with a shrug and an "I dunno." Who made this decision and why? What needs to be done to change this policy? Can something be done specifically for you, like pay a small fee or make a special request? Tell them you're interested in specific audio tapes and you want to find a way around this problem. See what they say! The worst that can happen is that they say they don't have the funds and can make NO exceptions. So your next question is, "Ok, if you cannot help me, WHO CAN? Please give me the name and number of someone who can give me access to those tapes. Even if it means contacting a different library, because these tapes ARE available." Being *persistant* will get you answers. Being kind will encourage the library associates to help you out. Give this a try, and let us know if you're successful!

Finally!
Tucson has the Winter Guest. It is showing at an old theatre near the University (so others may want to see if their cities have small independent theatres that feature only inde films). I thought it was wonderful. Clean and simple. A lot of inde files get rather cluttered or claustrophobic. TWG is the opposite, even a bit stark at times. I loved the wall hangings in the house and the stairway, and unlike some reviewer I read I thought the kittens worked wonderfully.

To "TMD Fan" and anyone else who's ever published lyrics or quotes without attribution: I'm sure no offense was intended, but those of us who make our livings (and those of us who hope to) as writers, playwrights, screenwriters, poets, librettists, and lyricists are always in danger of having our intellectual property borrowed without being credited (much less compensated) for it. As much as you might like the lyrics, someone did have to write them. So...

Valerie-- my library won't include _any_ audiotapes on interlibrary loan, either, so you're not alone; some libraries only let the tapes out for 2 weeks, which barely covers shipping time, especially if you're borrowing materials from out-of-state. However, the good news is, that libraries do have funds to buy new items, so put in a request for them to buy ROTN tapes, if that's what you're looking for-- just make sure to have the correct ISBN so they can buy the Rickman version! Hope that helps!

SusieB in Sydney, Emma's reviews are spot on, es-PEcially for ROTN. You'll be a believer soon, and if you don't believe me . . . Emma's Rickmanista Review got a glowing report from The Mining Co. list of British actor links: "Alan Rickman (The Rickmanista Review)

Reviews on fan sites are so often totally uncritical and gushing that they are not worth reading: not so here. The reviews of Rickman's films and audio tapes (theatre, we are told, will follow later) are intelligent in the main, and are assessed from two points of view: that of the filmgoer and that of the "Rickmaniac". A good idea, which makes the site worth a visit."

Way to go, Emma. (grin)

Well, hellooo everyone! um, it was my birthday on Sunday, and some of my friends, being the darling understanding, kind souls that they are, threw me a party. And, someone was smiling on me that day because I got Die Hard, Michael Collins and The January MAn. Oh, how my VCR fingers are itching! Now, please don't envy me, or anything, because I did get some very bitter cards which were not too flattering to Mr. Rickman, but they still love him, I know it! The real reason I posted though, is to echo Debbie's comments about tolerance. I know the subject has been approached before, but I wanted to say again how wonderful it is to have such a great group of people!

Kari, the Queen's "Cool Britannia" party was held on April 29, 1998. (So that explains his absence.) A short blurb can be found at the Branagh site of: http://www.OCF.Berkeley.EDU/~ngoc/news.htm a few paragraphs down, with a link to the London Evening Standard. I'll send you the full article by e-mail.

I love this html...I know I shouldn't say this, but *strapping on flame-proof suit* I actually don't like the pop song TMD by Savage Garden. *gasp* I love the Yo-Yo Ma "Inspired by Bach" CD's, though. And Ma has recorded the cello piece which is featured in TMD (the beginning) on a different CD. Ask me if you want to know the name, and I'll check.

Heartfelt endorsement for the interesting interview (cited previously by Melissa, at britishtheatre.miningco.com, under "Features" for 3/9/98) with Karen Rappaport, creator of the lovely Alan Bates web site (www.tiac.net/users/claret/front.html). She states she *didn't* want her site to be gossipy or coldly commercial; or "a love offering from an obsessed fan with a scanner" that "turned an intelligent actor into a sex object." Instead, book designer Rappaport sought to express her "connection, sympathy, some sort of chemistry or bond" by providing the best, most thorough, complete information about AB's work she could find, in a way that was as attractive as she could make it and that (she hoped) represented something of AB's personal style ("casual, understated elegance...at ease with itself, strong, simple but with flourishes." Rappaport envisioned the well-illustrated Bates Archive as a "serious site...similar to a documentary film or biography...homage but also history, a good story, reflective of the character, life and times of its subject." The Archive has won the guarded support and participation of Alan Bates and his organization; his secretary contributes to it! "We are at the beginning of what I hope will be a long and amiable association." Both article and Archive are well worth the time of any 'Maniac. Do give them a look.

Renie, when was the Queen's party? If it was recently, Alan probably wasn't there because he is still filming in Pittsburgh (according to the director who had the following to say regarding a scene shot on Monday, 5/4):

"We shot Alan in his wings and codpiece (or lack thereof). It took a few takes (uncomfortable ones for Alan, as he was carrying around fifty-plus pounds on his back) to get the wings operating properly, and the Ricker was a consumate pro and a trooper through it all, God bless him."

In addition, someone who was an extra on the Dogma set mentioned that she had walked right past Alan Rickman while in between takes. Her comment was that he was waaay larger than life and when he looked at her, she couldn't hold his gaze because he just made her quiver. I loved that. And, she wasn't even a fan! :-)

There is a picture of AR as Tybalt (yes, in those tights...) in a book about the mounting of the BBC Shakespeare canon for broadcast television. The pic is on pages 90-91--Why is the name of the book slipping my mind...?

I've been listening to TMD (too much) *sigh* and wondered...And has anyone ever posted the *whole* explanation about the Peter Barnes play reference of "Smooooth..." I'd find it hard to believe that we don't have that information amongst us.

I guess, then, that either AR was in Japan, or he didn't choose to accept the invitation to the Queen's Party? Branagh was there, as was Helena Bonham Carter. Is Emma Thompson in Chile right now? The press said that the gathering was an outgrowth of Tony Blair's embrace of the post-monarchy movers and shakers. Is this true? Hmmmm.

Some updates: AR finished Pittsburgh DOGMA filming and was last seen in Tokyo (c. April 30) promoting TWG. He *may* appear with Alfre Woodard this summer in a "romantic, adult" comedy, BROWN SUGAR. Or in a film biography of Aleistair Crowley written by Snoo Wilson (THE GRASS WIDOW) from his 1997 novel. Meanwhile, DARK HARBOR, after an alleged NYC sneak preview, world-premieres at the imminent Seattle International Film Festival! Schedules out May 12; see www.seattlefilms.com for details. Great that the GB is back!!! Karina thank you, it is a great way to keep up with Alan's work and new projects, which is very difficult to follow in Holland, as you hardly hear or see anything on him.

Hi all! Just got this wonderful link from my friends in Japan: http://toho-group.co.jp/cinema/winter/welcome-j.html. The Winter Guest opened in Japan recently, and apparently Alan made it there to promote the film. My friends are sending me info on its premiere! Let you in on the details as I get them. --Gilda
