Just read an interesting comment about AR from Mike Newell, director of AABA. He is quoted as saying that he decided to "handle him as I would have handled Elizabeth Taylor -- with great respect and care ..." (MovieWeb AABA production information). Not a comparison I would have instantly thought of. Mmmm, but got me thinking about AR in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? and A Streetcar Named Desire (just so I could hear him scream STEEEELLLLAAA!). I see him more in company with Paul Newman (good eyes), Richard Burton (good voice) and Marlon Brando (the underlying danger) than Elizabeth Taylor.

You know, it occurs to me that I should have said that what I *like* about that statement is that all *three* actors are there, not necessarily the order in which Branagh, Fiennes and Rickman are listed.
Yes, the voting is a topic on the KB mailing list as well.

Gasp! Is this what it feels like to be outnumbered in war??? With 5 browser windows open and I am loosing badly here in the voting stakes - there are one or more KB fans online right now who are obviously NOT going to stop until he is number one! I am sorry folks, I have to disappear for now and fear that when next we check, KB will be No. 1 in the polls... As I limp away to recuperate (or do some work), remember... The Alamo... No, sorry, remember: Vote... vote...

Renie, I respect your opinion on the poll, but tell that to the people(s) who are currently out voting me 11 votes to 1 to get Kenneth Branagh back in the race - and I have 4 browser windows open and am loosing dismally here! I don't think this poll has anything to do with fairplay anymore - its a matter of who has the most die hard fans willing to spend ages voting for their Numero Uno British Actor

Hi there!!! i would like to say that Alan´s best role was in "Sense And Sensibility" and that he portrayed the most romantic man of all time! I also loved him in "Michael Collins" as Eamon De Valera... well, but the main reason why i´m writting this e-mail is to ask to someone who reads this what they think about Alan and Rima, the famous gf??? Does anyone know if they are planning to get married or anything like that??? What about Texas´video??? Great, huh??? bye take care worship Alan

Hmmmm. Is it cranky to confess that I don't the see point of stuffing a ballot box for an internet poll? As someone who appreciates and admires Rickman, Fiennes, and Branagh, it might have been interesting to see the outcome of the poll if interested voters had only voted once, as was asked. By voting more than once, you not only risk invalidating your own vote(s), you skew the efforts of every singe person who took the time to register *one* vote. Just because an opinion is strongly held doesn't entitle anyone to mulitiple votes, at least in my voting book. Incidentallly, you also invite derision by those who-- accurately, it would seem--scoff at internet fan bases.
On a lighter note, this sentence from the nominations article alone just made my day. "By Monday morning of the second week, it looked like Branagh, Fiennes, Rickman . . . "

Clive King, in 28 Oct (Saturday's) London Times, follows the Guardian in naming "Galaxy Quest" the video release of the week, with these comments: "There are winning performances from all three leads, particularly Rickman as the cranky failed Shakespearean whose role as the ship's alien doctor forces him to make public appearances in a prosthetic headpiece. And, amid all the fun and farce, the film-makers find room for genuine human drama, side-swiping the viewer with some truly touching moments as these likeable has-beens search for the heroes within themselves."

Thanks a bunch, Ann-marie! Had hoped to be seeing a bit more of "Blow Dry" this weekend, but appreciate very much the little clip. More Yorkshire than was his Yorkshire Bronte estate tour guide at the Royal Court in June. And will be lovely to see Sean a bit biger than he was in "Winter Guest." Connections... connections...

Da man is weilding his influence on the set of HP... An article in the Daily Record credits AR with leading them to their "Oliver Wood" the captain of the Quidditch team for what ever house it is HP is in. And it goes a little something like this:
Sean's big break came when he was cast in Alan Rickman's movie The Winter Guest.
Alan, who plays baddie Severus Snape in the new film, spotted Sean's talent, organised an agent for him - and Sean won his big part in August.
Sean said: "I really owe a lot to Alan Rickman for having faith in me and being a friend. It's a bit daunting to be here. It has been really exciting on set and it's all down to me now." Full article found here

Thank you so much, A-m, for steering us to that terrific clip from Blow Dry. To me AR's Yorkshire accent is spot-on, but then I am a southerner so my judgement is not perfect. I think that, whenever we are finally allowed to see it, I am going to enjoy this film immensely. Nice to see Bill Nighy in a film, too. I have enjoyed his work on British TV for a long while.

Sally, the town the film is set in is called Keighley, I think. I love the accent as well. My grandmother was from Denaby in Yorkshire and for years as a child I was so used to the accent that when a friend mentioned it I was genuinely surprised. I'm hardly an expert but AR's accent sounded pretty good to me. It reminds me a bit of my English relatives from Yorkshire.

Since I didn't mind AR's accent when reciting La Muerta, I'm certainly not going to mind his accent in Blow Dry -- which to the uninitiated (like myself) he sounds like a regular-working-class guy anyway.

I just checked the actors/actresses poll and AR is way ahead!! Hope he wins! For those of you who know the actor Sean Bean (Sharpe, Lady Chatterley's Lover etc.) he has a very strong, authentic Yorkshire accent if you want to know what AR will sound like in Blow Dry (asuming we ever get to see Blow Dry...we might have to just imagine this film and pretend it exists!!)

Muchas Gracias, A-m. A wee bit o' Blow Dry! None of that is beyond the American's so i dont' know why Miramax are prevaricating... Is that really the Yorkshire accent? I often think (as in my head) in that accent (I just like it - and I can't duplicate my fave accent; Northern Ontario...), but beyond knowing it was from Northern England, I have been a bit afraid to venture beyond friends with it in case someone asked me where I was from... So if anyone wants to give me the name of a town or something (I have not been beyong the outer confines of York - and one trip across the moors when it was mist-to-the-ground conditions...) it would be much appreciated!

Someone did an enthusiastic thing by suggesting double voting in the 'British Theatre' poll for best theatre actor and actress. If you will read the article one fan club was caught doing that and we can get Alan Rickman the credit he deserves with honesty. In the time it took me to vote until just awhile later he went from 51% to 59% so we are voicing our opinion well. Vote and give AR the recognition he deserves........

In the survey done by 'The British Theatre Page' there is a pole being conducted on the best 'living actress and actor on British Stage' I just placed my vote and discovered that Alan Rickman has 51% of the leading votes. If you can get access then please place your votes. It is a very tight and furious race where any one can submit an actors name. Entire fan clubs are pitching for their fav. actor and/or actress so AR fans lets show them who we stand behind and who we believe to be the very best.....

In the course of surfing after voting for AR at the British Theatre site I got a nifty surprise. I found two clips from "Blow Dry"!! They are on a page of video clips I found by searching AR. They are incorrectly marked to the left as being from "Two Family House". The first is Rachael Leigh Cooke and Josh Hartnett. The SECOND, entitled "The Mighty" is AR and Bill Nighy. They offer it in two systems and a variety of speeds. AR's Yorkshire accent is lovely and he looks great. I think the site, called MovieConnect.com seems to be protected from downloading. I am probably wrong about this, so if anyone figures out how to do it please share the info!

I wonder if Miramax or Harvey Weinstein delayed Blow Dry's release until after the US elections? Weinstein, who is no favorite of Lynne Cheney's, came under Congressional fire in September during hearings on the general "depravity" of Hollywood; and shortly afterward the Gore campaign was criticized for taking money from Hollywood. Weinstein openly supports the Democrats. [I have found no factual basis for this; it's only my hypothesizing!]

Jenny: The HMV guy I am working through keeps saying his Universal Music rep's name is Lachlan. I don't have any more info than that. However, you have been sold a defective product, a lemon, so to speak, and should get a refund! Would you buy a remote control TV without the remote? Same thing as far as I am concerned! Threaten your record store with a nice little letter to the ACCC if they don't comply with a refund... You can find the local ACCC office to write to athere. It does work - I had a huge complaint against AAPT once, and a letter from the ACCC brought some swift action which wasn't forthcoming prior to the letter to the ACCC...
Yes! I see some of you out there are helping me get this poll up! Yay! We'll get AR recognised yet!

Ok people, as I to and fro between voting and stats here, I read the article, and we only just squeaked AR in! He got 37 votes to get into the poll and Michael Crawford got 233! Clearly, we are up against a well organised fan club here, and Some Mothers Do Have Em and Phantom of the Opera do not equate to Rasputin, Michael Collins and the dozens of stage, movie and TV credits AR has (I know Michael Crawford has done 1 or 2 other Andrew Lloyd Weber things, but its still not the same!). This is for BEST EVER ACTOR, and I would argue AR is far superior to any others in the poll - and we need to get voting! (Do multiple votes...)

Michael Crawford even crept passed him before I, er, started 'voting' - and although I do not dispute Michael Crawford maybe marvelous as a singer and on stage, I have not noticed a whole lot of stuff since 'Some Mothers Do Have 'em" and when push comes to shove, I am SURE AR has a much more diverse and worthy theatre and movie repertiore that Michael Crawford!

I await further news from my man, Kaine at HMV... Nice to know the internet has some power here! I hope this begins to seep back to Universal Music and Mercury Records that they are selling a dud deal here! Bless you Suzanne! Loved the MO clip - I would love to see the whole thing one day. And one of these days I may even get up the nerve to go for that autograph. Y'all are all so much fun to read and are so generous in sharing any info out there about AR. Which brings me back to Harry Potter. If you haven't read the books - do - they're fun for big kids too. Snape is just the kind of character AR plays so well sinister and ambiguous. After four books you aren't quite sure who's side he's on. Or what he owes Dumbledore. AR will be perfect, I have no doubt. Hi to you too Mary Anne - I'm glad to see another Southerner, too. S~

Well I had a dull Friday sans "Blow Dry". I've been kicking it around a little and had a couple of thoughts. "Billy Elliot" is being heavily touted as the next "Full Monty" and it has gotten awfully good reviews. I was thinking that Miramax might be trying to avoid competition with it. "The Full Monty" has been mentioned in advertising for virtually every small British movie over the last few years. They used it for "Saving Grace", which incidentally opened wide around the time BD was first scheduled in September. Maybe Miramax thinks the US audience will only be interested in one small British comedy at a time. I was also thinking that Miramax might be banking away some titles for the Spring in case the threatened actor's strikes happen and closes down production. That's about the time the product would start to run out. This might explain the recent dearth of new stuff in the theaters. Of course, I'm probably wrong and Miramax may just be really dumb. Yesterday their site was saying that BD had opened?!? Just my 2 cents.

Suzanne, Thank you ever so much for your posting of the Robin Hood music video and the Fallen Angels interview!!! I could hardly believe my eyes when I opened up the GB. I was indeed the one who had asked if someone had the music clip a while ago. Great memory! And really, really nice of you to put it in the GB for all of us to enjoy. I know what you mean, Cindie, about the goosebumps at the brief glimpses of the Sheriff. The M,O clip is great too! And like AR said, you just don't know how it ends and that's the way it's intended to be. He was brilliant in it and absolutely gorgeous in that silk robe with a snifter in his hand. You're going to love it Cindie. Hope you don't have to wait as long as I did to receive it. Thanks a million again Suzanne.

"Harry Potter" just keeps getting more interesting. According to Daily Variety, there's a new star getting involved:
"John Cleese will play the ghost Nearly-Headless Nick in the movie "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone". The cast for director Chris Columbus’ adaptation of the novel by J.K. Rowling includes Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Robbie Coltrane and Alan Rickman in addition to young Daniel Radcliffe, who will play Harry."

The last one, surely, to *finally* see the In Demand video on RealPlayer--even in the choppy images, they were there, those h*nds. All over the place. Everywhere. Would someone be kind enough to make a capture of the part where he drapes his fingers over the side of the car. And when he sort of trills them during the tango, you can bet I was on the floor. I'm so glad he said yes when she asked him.
Cindie, yes, that's the tour of Les Miz with Brennan. Contact me at my hotmail addy if you want to find out whether Brennan will be on that night.

Sally, Barbara and other Australian purchasers of the In Demand CD, in particular ... Just to add my experience to the record: I took it back to the store and got the "we don't refund ... do you want another copy ..." speech. But, when I said that this problem was being widely discussed on the internet and that it should be the record company's problem not the consumers' etc. the cash register draw flew open and I was $7.95 better off. I do feel better.

I see that IMDB now also lists Blow Dry as a limited release on march 9, 2001... Are there steep scottish accents in this film or something??? American fans of Britsh actors could be being penalised here because of the preceived intolerance of accents other than american english (a theory and speculation, thats all...). Not that that explains why they haven't set release dates for Blow Dry in the UK and Australia where the Full Monty was a huge hit (although i do recall seeing the Full Monty in Denver and the only problem my freinds had with it was the coloquial terms - not understanding it...)

To Christine (if memory serves) and everyone else who'd like to see the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves music video. I found it in my video collection the other day, so I made a Videogram:
Lovely song, too.
As for the ending of Fallen Angels: Murder Obliquely, I thought it was rather ambiguous. And I think AR says something to that effect in the Behind-the-scenes of Fallen Angels clip (also a Videogram: FA-bts.exe). 3.5 MB, 3 min, 32 secs.
And a big welcome to all the newcomers!

Julia, I don't visit the GB regularly, so I didn't know you had asked if other people were going to the lecture. Moreover, I didn't even know that I would be going! It had never occurred to me to call the theater for tickets because I had assumed the lecture was for drama students exclusively. When you said on the AR list you had bought a ticket I thought you must be an actress! By the time I found out that it was a public event there were no tickets left. It was only by a very lucky chance that we ended up getting two return tickets. But I already said all that in my earlier post. And yes, of course my surroundings on that day were indeed eclipsed by Alan's presence, I won't deny it!

Barbara in Germany: I'm sure that if you go back to look at the GB archives, you will find that I asked repeatedly who else was going to the lecture. I was contacted by a few people, and we were fortunate enough to meet each other. I am sorry that you and I did not get this opportunity. However, I do recall there being two ladies speaking German at the stage door, and I think I was the one who interrupted and said that I could understand what you were saying. Still, I don't blame you for not remembering; the event must have been eclipsed entirely by Alan's appearance! ;)

Hello everyone,
Darlene here, I have hear some info for my friend that works in SoHo and he tells me that there is talk of Blow Dry going directly to Video here in the states as did Dark Habor and Judas Kiss. There doesn't seem to be a lot of confidence in the movie pulling in very many views in theathers. This is just here say but seeing that the state of movies here in america is sad and sorry it wouldn't really suprise me that much. I mean we I should be sitting in a theather watching BD right now and not posting the message. Sad, sad, sad, and greatly disapointing. What will be the fate of Help!I'm a Fish and Gissing here. I am starting to think the only one of AR's movies we will end up seeing on the big screen is the Potter movie. I hope I am wrong about all this and that we will all be dicussing how wonderful AR was in BD in the movies and March 9th 2001.

Hi all! I finally received M,O in the mail after waiting, not very patiently I'm afraid, for 3 weeks. (I had won it on ebay.) It was well worth the time! It would have been great as a full length film. AR was fabulous, charming and very sexy as usual. I didn't know quite what to make of the end however. I'd love to hear from anyone by email who'd like to share their point of view. Best not to discuss it in the GB for those who haven't seen it.

The Guardian today picks "Galaxy Quest" as its video release of the week, and includes this bit: "Alan Rickman's innately superior manner and look of deep, withering distaste are put to wonderful use in his role as the series' Spock-like "alien", while the cinema's mighty alien-slayer Sigourney Weaver is cast as a blonde interstellar glamourpuss whose only function is to repeat the captain's orders to the computer. The script enables Rickman, whose dignity is constantly being undermined, to say "I've played Richard the Third. Five curtain calls" to which Allen spits, "Scene-stealing hack!" - a phrase that must surely have been used on occasion by overwhelmed and outshone actors."
. . .
"It's the relative subtlety of the comic ideas (compared with formula fare like Spaceballs) that makes this a bit of a treat."

Hello everyone. It was very interesting to see a preview on 60 minutes this week on ch 9 this Sunday night about the Music industry which included Unviversal and other companies being invesigated about the artists they represent and complaints they have from them re Money owed to them . I only say it for a minute , but I think it is worth a look as so many of us are Angry at the moment with what we are getting.Barbara form Germany Thank you so much for responding to my posting. It is true that so much in the Theatre is based on a fact or on a greater experience. We tend to lean on things we have experienced in life, I guess and I tend to build the parts I play on what I see in the life of the character I play and the words of the writer who see's this character so clearly right to the end. You feel you are in the company of several people , not on your own. Theatre is wonderful and being part of it all! Sally,Stephnie I hope this is a good program to watch, Re writing to Lachlan etc. Bye.

According to Empire Online today, the producers of "Harry Potter" are going to do their best to make sure no one sees what the characters look like:
"...the heavies attached to the Harry Potter production team have managed to annoy yet more upstanding citizens. Last week we heard that the villagers of Goathland had been snubbed by filming taking place in Yorkshire. This time it's the students at Oxford University that are feeling the effects of the security surrounding the movie.
The movie version of JK Rowling's best-seller is currently being filmed on location in the City of Dreaming Spires, but such is the secrecy surrounding the film that students are being frisked whenever they approach the set. 'If they see any of us with a camera, they try to confiscate it,' a student at Christchurch College told Empire Online. 'Even if you put your hands in your pockets, they think you're up to something suspicious. It's completely upset life at college - and we don't even get to watch them filming.'
The filmmakers have gone to great lengths to prevent prying eyes from seeing what is actually being filmed in the college's ancient cloisters. Entrances to the set are blocked by a combination of college and studio security and a lecture room which overlooked filming has been locked since filming kicked off on Monday."

Hi y'all. I've been a rabid Rickmaniac for years, but only recently thought of searching the web. Duh. Am thrilled to find that there are other folks out there that are as crazy about Mr. Rickman as I am. Have really enjoyed the little of this guestbook & web site that I've read so far. And will be reading it all the time now. I know AR is currently filming the Harry Potter movie, as Snape. I cannot wait to see this! Has anyone seen a picture of him in character yet?

Barbara - good on you - and Stephanie, please complain! I feel like I am the lone wolf in Australia here! This is what erks me about Australia in general - we just NEVER COMPLAIN! Certainly, my time in America taught me you only get results if you speak up! I'm glad though, that I got to tape In Demand that one lonely night it was on Rage... Certainly, the song is getting zilcho airplay down here!
Like you Barabara, I had to see Judas Kiss twice to really appreciate it, but I liked it a lot the first time - it was quirky and fun! Simon Baker did do a good job, didn't he?! (he's australian for all of those who saw the movie and never once picked it up - I felt he was more consistant with the southern drawl than the american actors!)
Thanks for the insights Julia and Barabara, especially pigeon-holing! Everyone gets pigeon-holed, not just actors! I dont' know about you people out there, but the only reason I seem to have upteen jobs on my resume is because I get pigeon-holed and then the company is loath to promote me because I am good at what I do, even though I am bored spitless and anxious to move on! Its just actors are so much more visisble. I have been watching a fascinating series on Directors, and I tellya, they don't get pigeon-holed! They seem to be given all sorts of films of any genre to do (unless you're the Farelli Bros and rather like doing gross-out films...). Take Ron Howard or Stephen Spierlberg for example...

Barbara (Australia), you are lucky to have seen Judas Kiss on the big screen. AR's movies rarely make it into the German cinemas. I liked the film, IMO it was intelligently made and had a good plot. As far as I can tell (English not being my native language) AR did a great job on the accent, although I personally prefer to hear him speak British English. Seeing AR in person was a wonderful experience, especially as it came as quite a surprise. When we arrived in London a day before the lecture we didn't even know if there would be tickets for us. On calling the theater box office I had been informed that the lecture was fully booked and that there wouldn't be any return tickets, either. However, shortly before the lecture it turned out there were return tickets after all so we could attend. Unfortunately, I don't remember in detail all the things that were said during the lecture. I'm sure that - if they listened carefully - the students will, in the long run, find AR's answers to their questions extremely helpful, since he explained everything very patiently and kept encouraging them to focus and work hard. I remember one student complaining about too much "theoretical" work in the class he was taking, so AR explained to him at great length how important a good basis was for every subject you're studying, just like Latin was a good basis for studying a foreign language. As I said before, I enjoyed the lecture very much, but I can't pretend it was solely because of AR's intelligence, eloquence, and wit; it was also because it was great to see him there in person, so close, and "real", as opposed to seeing him on my TV screen only. I'm sure most of the people on this list can appreciate that.

Hello everyone! I would like to welcome both Julia and Barbara from Germany! It was really great to see Judas Kiss finally arrive on the Gold Coast on Monday! I went to see it a second time and saw more into this movie this time. There is so much talk in this film and some parts are hard to take, however, AR comes out the best with his accent and Simon Baker does his best. There are so many twists to this script, I feel you need to see it twice to properly understand it. This film got the critics award here and I suppose that is something Howerever it is not on the top of my list but still good to see AR extend his acting abilities. Sally, I agree with you about the CD. This is WAR and will do my best to rectify this problem. I don't like being taken for a fool as the man here suggested so will write directly to the makers of this faulty CD.I just wish I could see this Video... It seems all is against us, here. Barbara (Germany), it must be great to see AR in person. Anything you can write here and share with all of us would be great!Bye

Julia, I don't remember you introducing yourself to the other Rickman fans either. I think we did talk to each other, but at the time I had no idea who you were; I'm still not absolutely sure if you're the person I have in mind now. Since I had never seen AR doing a lecture before, his talking about being pigeonholed etc. was completely new to me, and I'm sure that since the lecture was designed for young people who haven't been following AR's career as closely as most of us have, it was new to them, too. AR was on the stage for almost 2 1/2 hours and I didn't get bored for one minute, even when he was talking about theater-specific subjects I didn't know anything about. Of course, if you go to lectures all the time you will reach a point where you have heard it all before. As for me, I was enthralled by AR's eloquence and rhetoric which I had never had the good fortune to witness before.

It seems my opinions are not those shared by most Rickmaniacs. Please forgive me if I took the lecture as a learning experience, not a droolfest. I am a dedicated fan, but a more dedicated learner. What I meant by rugs, pigeonholes and Fred Astaire was: He likes to "pull the rug out from other people's expectations"; He often feels "pigeonholed" and typecast, so he doesn't like giving interviews; finally, he admires Fred Astaire in that you never see the hard work that went into it. I'm sure Barbra from Germany will be more than happy to oblige you all with a summary more palatable to your tastes. I was not aware that she was at the Masterclass, but I suppose it would have been too difficult to introduce herself to the rest of the Rickmaniacs who attended.

I finally received and saw Dark Harbor... Ok. Now I get you all... Up until the kitchen scene, I thought it was just poor editing, but after that, I realised it was the story... I know some don't want to hear it, but I just can't help but think AR just sounds better when speaking british accents... But, that Polly Walker... 30 years ago and she would have been a Hitchcock babe! If anyone is looking to reshoot Vertigo, the Birds or Marnie, I'd be looking at her...

Quoting the Oxford University Library Staff Newsletter from 31 August, the IGN FilmForce reports:
"Hogwarts comes to Bodley - The Newsletter can reveal that the Bodleian is one of the sites chosen to provide locations for the new Harry Potter film. Following an agreement with the film company last week, Duke Humfrey's Library is to be the library at Hogwarts School, while the Divinity School will be transformed into the school hospital. Filming is expected to take place towards the end of October, and will take place outside Library hours."
Further details of the Bodley shoot in the 12 October edition of the newsletter:
"Warner Bros. will be racing to finish filming for the first Harry Potter film in the Bodleian within their allotted time. They will be working non-stop in Duke Humfrey for forty-three hours from 1 pm on Saturday 21 October, when the Library closes, to 8 am on the Monday morning, so as to leave the room free again for readers when the Library opens one hour later. Filming will continue in the Divinity School for a further two days after that."

Sally, I agree with you. AR does not repeat himself more than necessary. Of course, during the lecture, some questions came up several times. AR always pointed out that he had already answered those questions, sometimes he would elaborate a bit on a previous answer or add something. Julia, can you explain what you mean by "the usual bit?" I don't remember AR saying anything about rugs, and what he had to say on pigeonholes and Fred Astaire was new to me and, as everything else in the lecture, VERY interesting. I had never had the good fortune to see AR live so I was extremely impressed by his personality, his intelligence, and, last but not least, his incredibly good looks. I enjoyed the lecture tremendously and thought it more than "droolworthy".

Thank you, all. Your comments were very encouraging. I am a part-time writer (poetry mainly, but I do non-fic well), and I was hoping to do a better job than That Woman. I even had a whole list of yummy questions. The letter informing me of the fact that a biography was not in Mr. Rickman's plans was sent through his agent, of course, but that was to be expected. To be honest, when I wrote to him, I didn't even expect a reply (given all the nasty things I said about Maureen Paton's book...) so receiving a letter from ICM was a surprise. And as for repeating himself, AR obviously had to reiterate the things he has said before, but he did it in almost the same words, which is what I meant. He did the usual bit about pigeonholes, rugs, and Fred Astaire.

Magda, as I understand it, she plans 7 books (one for each year at Hogworts), and the first five (the fifth to be released coincident with the first film) are presently contracted to film. Do not think that arrangement precludes filming the last two books, however. I do believe the actors were only asked to commit to the five. But am merely inferring here...

Although the book my Patton is interesting, I must confess, the scientist in me though the way it was written and ordered was absolutely appalling! She jumped and skipped all over the place and not dicuss anything under the chapter heading etc etc. After watching ARs performance in Rasputin, I tottled off to read my second biography in my life - Rasputin: The Final Word by Edvard Radzinsky. I though the same of him - but he did a marvelous job of keeping the chronology straight! I then read Nicholas and Alexandra which restored my faith in biographical writing, but the chronology was all out of whack again...
I say this to encourage you Julie, because I don't think it would take a lot to improve on Pattons book! However, I'm guessing Sr. Rickman either doesn't think he has reached a time in his career where one can dwell on it in a biography yet when he still has a good, what, 10-30 years? in front of him of acting... Or he is saving the task to do it himself as then it will be done right - the way he wants it done! Who knows! I speculate and digress quite badly...

Julia, did Mr. Rickman write you the curt letter or did he have Melanie do it? I thought that the Maureen Patton book was tedious, and had some "sour grapes" comments from jealous actors, and nice things from admirers and friends. There was a silly tendency to attribute the characteristics of Rickman's characters to him personally, and to use "psychobabble" and supposition instead of facts. Rima was dealt with in a fair manner, despite the criticism of her smoking. One would think that AR would be glad to have himself portrayed as an unavailable, one woman man. He seems to be quite upset when the subject is broached, perhaps because his permission was not given. I have found that the articles that he has provided are far more informative than the Patton book. Julia, although I don't know you, I am sure that you could do a much better job.

Well, Julia - I'm envious... But, wasn't it a lecture supposed to give information to assist people trying to get into acting? I know I am teaching part time right now, and I think I am endlessly repeating myself, but you kind of have to hammer home the point... Of course, I have never seen AR live and only seen the online interviews on TV, where he doesn't seem to repeat himself there. However, I don't think I would care if I WAS in the audience - I'd just be listening and looking in taking in next to nothing of what he was saying (like the Quebecious used to do over my accent - very disconcerting!)

ATTENTION AUSSIE FANS WHO BOUGHT "In Demand"
COMPLAIN!!!
I haven't said anything, because I opened bit of a can of worms which is still working its way through the system. But essentially, Universal (distributors) or Texas' Cd in Australia had heard nothing about it. They in turn, had to talk to Mercury, the labeller, who are taking a "well, only one person complained, therefore she got a faulty CD attitude" (by the sounds of it). Universal is waiting to hear from Mercury about whether or not they will repress the CD with the video. Until Mercury does something, HMV has refunded my money for the CD and said if Mercury opts not to repress the CD, they will import it for me. It was emphasised very heavily that I am the ONLY person in Australia who has complained, and if more action is wanted, others should complain. I mentioned that everyone else who had bought the CD had complained and he music stores had dismissed them. My HMV man, Kaine, he said that was NOT the way it is supposed to be! You bought a product thinking it had the CD - and you paid $5 extra for that, you should have got it. He says to tell you guys to go back and MAKE YOUR MUSIC STORE CALL UNIVERSAL and complain. The Universal rep in Sydney is called 'Lachlan' if they want a name of someone to contact. Unviversal would love to hear from more people - particularly as this seems to be an Australia-wide thing!
Hope you guys help get this situation rectified!

But in response to Fay, A Rickman Admirer, Magda and Barbara, yes, I did attend the lecture, along with some other Rickmaniacs who will disclose themselves if they so wish. Mr. Rickman was very gracious, and informative, although he did not say anything more significant than I have already posted. As some of you may have noticed, he has a tendency to repeat himself. Nothing of tremendous Rickman note happened, especially not to me, and though I would love to have been designated his official biographer, he has turned me down in a curt letter. So, don't get too excited. It was very nice, but not droolworthy.

7 October "Le Monde" review of "Galaxy Quest":

According to Aint-it-Cool-News, Screendaily has some information about Help, I'm a Fish! and its success to date:
Some news of the Danish box-office with a big success of a local animated film : Danish animation Help! I Am A Fish is currently storming the Danish box office, sinking local competitor Dancer In the Dark. Just two weeks after its release Help! I Am A Fish has achieved admissions of 177,243 from 60 screens. In comparison Lars von Triar’s Dancer In The Dark has grossed $885,020 – the equivalent of 151,904 admissions - after six weeks.
According to distributor Nordisk, much of the animation’s success was due to the school holiday week when the film’s box office increased 240% from the first week to the second. The other major releases also suffered against this domestic hit. The DreamWorks SKG/Aardman Productions’ animation Chicken Run grossed $284,403 from 41 screens while suspense thriller What Lies Beneath, grossed $247,655 from 38 screens. In Finland where audiences are even more suspicious of non-US animations, Help! I’m A Fish was received well, scooping a box office of $64,776 from 27 screens in its opening week.

The GB server has reported no "down times" to me, so the obstruction may have been caused by sheer volume. I'm hoping a bit of archiving has solved the problem, so let me know if your difficulties persist. Will work on FOF next.

"Wizard wheeze"
By Adam Helliker
THE Duke and Duchess of Northumberland have good reason to be grateful to Harry Potter: the couple have made a small fortune from renting out their stately home, Alnwick Castle, as the setting in the forthcoming film for the Hogwart's school of wizardry.
As the last few flakes of fake snow were being swept away this weekend, (the aftermath of the Christmas sequence), such stars as Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman and Zoe Wanamaker have packed their bags, expressing reluctance about leaving the magical beauty spot set in 600 acres of woodland.
"We were delighted to have had them there," declared a spokesman for the duke, who has made a tidy sum in location fees from film companies - the castle has featured in Becket, Mary Queen of Scots, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and the television series Blackadder, and his London home Syon House, in Middlesex, has just starred in the film of the Henry James novel The Golden Bowl.[italics added]

Magda--it's not your connection (or at least, not your connection alone): I, too, have had trouble getting into the GB and FOF several times lately, and so have some other people. Generally it was late at night or early in the morning, and access would be better during the day and "prime time" in the evening. Some tinkering about with the server in the dead of night? Perhaps HE is behind it all?! =8-O

Barbara: thanks for the correction. I was going by the official site and the news reports which didn't mention public access.
Eliz: Personally or historically? Personally, no, it isn't. Historically, I believe the original old German was Magdatrude but that could be a corruption of Magdalene; many old names came from biblical sources.
Question: is it my connection or has the GB sometimes been unavailable this week?

Magda, concerning the Haymarket lecture, it would not have been sneaky or dishonest to go there. It was a public event and anybody was allowed to buy tickets. They had given most of the tickets to drama schools and colleges and the like, but the lecture was NOT exclusively for students.

From 20 October "Daily Mail":
For the single's video, Sharleen hooked up with actor Alan Rickman, a long-term Texas fan.
'I didn't want a video with me staring moodily out of the window,' says Spiteri, who also plays guitar and piano onstage. 'I wanted a challenge, so the director asked me to tango with Alan Rickman. Alan had never done anything like that, but he was charming to work with.' SPITERI has been offered film roles, but is happy to concentrate on music.

"Thud" is right! And thud again. Indeed.
Speaking of pics . . . I recently ordered two copies of a book called Shakespeare: A Crash Course for my library. The author is Rob Graham. I thought it would be good for students because it's exactly what the title implies: a good little "browse" book about Shax, the plays, the theatrical conventions, etc.
Well, imagine my pleasure, as I leafed through it, to find our man AR on page 67! It's one of the scenes from A&C. Helen Mirren looks quite pleased with herself, for whatever reason (*ahem*) and Rickman as Antony looks rather sulky--or as if he's had a bit too much to drink. Or both, maybe. It made me chuckle. Anyway, the book is a fun book even without the consideration of yet another photo of AR.
And just for you, Renie, there's a pic of KB on the very next page! *grin* It's from H-5 after the battle, though, so he looks rather disreputable and filthy . . . I know, as if it mattered.

Hang in there aussie fans who bought In Demand... I went into HMV today ready to do battle, and the young fellow who served me must have had a course in 'Quality questioning' because he very quickly ascertained I wanted the video on the CD. I also told him this was an Australia-wide problem. So, he went out back and called up Universal Music (the distributors in Aust.). They didn't know anything about the video not being on the CD... Universal is looking into the matter right now and hopefully, someone will get back to me today. However, HMV says if Unviersal isn't going to replace the batch, they can import the CD for me, so don't any of the music stores talk you into accepting the situation - they've done the equivalent of selling you a remote-control TV without the remote! The CD says they have done everything to ensure it is free of virus's etc and take no responsibility of the 'interactive elements' interfere with your computer. There is no guarantee there about you can't swap that CD if you didn't get everything they promise on the cover. You paid for the video, you should get it. Anyway, when I hear back from HMV/Universal, I shall let you know what the next step is. Yessiree - Sally is on a white horse of salvation here...

UK and North American English can indeed be two languages. When I was in university a friend of mine played on the men's soccer team and they played a "friendly" game on our campus with a visiting British university (I think it was Hull). The British definition of "friendly" was no permanent disabilities resulting from play and let your mates use your blood transfusion kit if needed. At one point my friend did something that a British player took great offense at and he screamed at my friend: "You &@*! sod!" My friend and his teammates stared at each other for a minute, then he turned to the coach and called, "That guy just called me a chunk of grass! What should I do?" The coach couldn't answer as he was laughing too hard.

And, *sigh* my copy of In Demand also doesn't feature the video - not even burnt on the damn CD... Regretably, I am one of the people out there who DOESN'T like the song, so.... Mindy, I think we in Australia will be MOST intrigued to hear if your copy, when it gets to you, has the video on it! We've only been shipped a dud batch, and with the non-existant airplay it is getting here, I can't see them making more CDs unless video hits starts plugging it or something.

It would appear that WB is about to go over the top and produce a whiz bang HP website that is state of the art etc etc etc. Lets hope they beat the rumour mongers and keep the site up to date!
"Back to round-up mode, Variety reports that Warner Bros. has contracted Web design firm DNA Studio to develop a massive Harry Potter website. The site that you currently see at HarryPotter.com is just a basic site for press releases and early film publicity. Eventually, the current site will be replaced by a DNA-designed Harry Potter mega-site that will, in the words of a Warner Bros. exec, "manage the brand throughout the movies and be the official source for all 'Harry Potter' information on the Internet." When speaking with Variety, Warner's Executive Vice President, Kevin Tsujihara said, "We want it to be a voice for all seven books. We want the site to bridge all the movies and live well beyond the films. We want to funnel a lot of 'Harry Potter' fans through this site." DNA is working with the filmmakers and author J.K. Rowling to design the site.
Warner Bros. also plans to create six foreign-language versions of the site, with the English U.S. and U.K. editions bowing in November, and the other five sites launching in December." Since when has American and UK English been 2 foreign languages???

The song's video is also worth seeing as it features Sharleen dancing a dramatic tango across a garage forecourt with actor Alan Rickman.

The word on the street is that AR is indeed in Harry Potter, and that he has actually spoken to JK Rowling about his character. Also, he is apparently set to direct something else (I don't know what it is, don't ask me!) and that is part of the reason why he agreed to do HP. Lastly, he has not read the unauthorised biography by Maureen Paton, and thank God for that. This concludes the Rickman newbrief, brought to you by Close Encounters of the Rickman kind.

Hello, all...delurking for a moment while Glenn is napping...
For anyone whose curiosity about the Irish bid for independence was sparked by watching Michael Collins, I recommend the book 1916 by Morgan Llywelyn. It's an historical novel about the events leading up to the Easter Rising, and has an interesting mix of fictional and real characters, including the leaders of the movement (Plunkett, Pearse, Clarke, etc. de Valera and Collins are very minor characters.) I couldn't put it down. When I finished it, I plopped the baby in the Snugli and headed for the nearest bookstore to pick up a book on Irish history!

I spent some time last night watching the new DVD of "Bob Roberts" and listening to the a lot of the commentaries with Tim Robbins. The first seems to be several years old and was probably recorded for the laser disk special edition. The second was recorded this past December and includes some commentary by Gore Vidal as well as Robbins. In both versions Robbins makes a special point, most especially in the later commentary, that the film most likely would never have been made if AR hadn't agreed to participate. He says AR took a part that on paper wasn't really very much and made it more than it was because he felt the project was important. The studio apparently made a last minute requirement that another name star be in the film and AR agreed. He REALLY feels he owes AR. Gore Vidal remarked at one point that AR had adopted one of the more unusual American accents from a Brit and that it was positively chilling. In addition, there are a lot of AR pictures in the photo section, notably a very cute yawn pic, that I've never seen before. None of the included deleted scenes are significant AR scenes.
The commentaries are quite interesting but probably not a fun watch for anyone who might be a little to the right of center.

Thank you, Stephanie, but unfortunatly, The store where I got the CD will not refund, as I found out today. They said that they cannot be resposible or held accountable if the Video does not work. I have the correct PC as I too was told I had the wrong PC and my Daughter, who is the expert here was able to explain to them that we had all the requirements. I gave up, gracefully and I guess I will be happy to have the song, which I think is very good to listen to. I never knew Texas till now but "In Demand" is a great song. It seems inexplicpable to me that we cannot get what we buy on these CD's. I didn't try to decieve these people as they could see that it was written on the cover, and on the CD itself. So, O.K. I accept the umpire's decision and move on. I would like to say, however, that I am upset, and I know that one person doesn't make much of a difference but perhaps these huge company's could get it right next time for all of us.Also heard that Billy Elliot starts next week at our theatre's. The European MAXI CD has FIVE tracks the 5th track is the Video - like Australia, and totally different to the UK 2CD set, which can be bought in separate parts. The Maxi CD is the same as CD1 in the UK plus an In Demand (Wookie Remix). Check out Ebay.com for the differences.
Now whether they have the right CD in the case, now that's a different matter!

Stephanie and Sally: The UK version of the In Demand CD with the video definitely only has 4 tracks..the video being on the 4th track. I can't quite understand why your export version would have 5??? It's all a bit of a mystery! Hope you eventually solve it!

Sally, and all other Aussies particularly. Be very careful and get them to check it out on the computer before you buy. I found it in another shop yesterday. The jacket and the CD said it was there, but when they checked on computer there were definitely only 4 tracks. The video wasn't there. They seemed to think it was an error which would be picked up by retailers, fed back to Mercury/Universal and corrected in the next 'batch'. Let's hope.

The Harry Potter MOvie Site confirmed AR has in the HP movie as Snape on 13/10/00. Can read the article here (I know, I know - we all know he was confirmed back in August by CNN... But he was listed as rumoured on this site - and still is if you go to the casting - so maybe they are now happy...)

Staphanie - I went into HMV in the city (Sydney) and it mentioned that the 5th track was the video clip of In Demand. Planning on buying it next week... I'm assuming that since HMV Oz is selling it for $9.95 and Sanity for $6.95, that the Sanity version doens't have the video. Can conform that next week when I go to Sanity (it is very close to HMV in Sydney), but they were slower than HMV in getting on the shelves (And neither managed to get it on the shelves within 3 days of the official release date...).

To Stezi: I just began to go back to your page on Dark Harbor yet again for about the 100th time and the music chosen is hauntingly romantic and fitting to the words there. Wonderful choice for it took me down to your reference for J S Back Orchestral Suite #3 in D and I was amazed with the list that you have of Bach's music. Amazing. Bach is one of my fovourites but anyone who finds AR in their fantasy might like to indeed listen to this piece of music. You people who take so much care in your choices for you pages are extraodinary and I just want to say glad I checked it out.Hauntingly beautiful is the melody... Thanks

Tampa/Go Gators!!, Fl USA - Saturday, October 14, 2000 at 09:17:30 (PDT)
In Demand CD. The UK CD's have only four tracks therefore are different to the Australian versions. CD1 has In Demand, Early Hours, Like Lovers (Holding On) and shows track 4 as the In Demand (video). CD2 is four In Demand remixes and a larger jewel case for the fold out poster.
Suggestion for those buying on line, only buy where the tracks are identified to save expensive mistakes!

The CD I have has an identical cover to the one listed at Sanity (www.sanity.com.au/info.asp?item=1808705), white with Sharleen right of centre and is labeled as 'enhanced CD' and listing In Demand (video) as track 05 on both the jacket and the silver-faced CD itself. But it ain't there. Is the English packaged the same way? With the only packaging difference being the black video sticker? It's all very confusing.

2 In Demand CDs???? Oops - better only buy the one from Chaosmusic folks - thats the more expensive one! The one I saw in HMV, Sydney cost $AUS9.95 and defintely had the video as track 5. The cover was all white with Sharleen off to the bottom right of it. Will check to see if HMV OZ has In Demand yet as at least I KNOW they are selling the right version in the stores!

Moms aren't necessarily mean, nor are folk within this list who've debated the merits of "Dogma." In fact your mum, much like this Guestbook, is feeling somewhat protective towards you. While the film indeed stars our hero as no less than the Voice of God (type-casting!) it is a satire deliberately produced for a mature sensibility of much life experience, which, translated out of old fogey-dom, means you really, really have to know all the topics of philsophy, religious doctrine, theological controversies and theatrical device like deliberate outrage (the plentiful naughty language in question by the prophet dudes) to actually get the in-jokes. And it was produced to be funny, not just feature an appealing cast doused with a lot of blood and less appealing substances. Satires and other sophisticated film fare started making sense to me, for one, when I was about 15. You are at least ahead of the game for now by expanding your horizons to chats like this one!

From 12 October Evening Chronicle (Newcastle):
Going wild about Harry
THE FILMING of a Harry Potter film in the North East could attract movie productions and tourists to the region for years to come. The Northern Film Commission is hoping the screen version of the popular J K Rowling book will do for the North East what Beatrix Potter did for the Lake District. Commissioner Paul Mingard said: "We know there were many places the producers could have chosen from the filming but they have picked the north and we are thrilled to bits. When a production of this size arrives, it brings enormous benefit to the local economy.'' Filming started at the beginning of the month in Alnwick, Northumberland, and included a cast of 30 local schoolchildren dressed in wizard robes. Robbie Coltrane is one of a host of celebrities who have been cast for the £100m film based on the best selling book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Others include Dame Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman.

Nice smallish, colour, 3/4 pic of AR in today's Evening Standard magazine (Oct.13). It'a part of a set of three. From far left: Joseph Fiennes, Alan Rickman, and Hugh Grant. All at the premiere of Billy Elliot. Caption says: You're gorgeous...so will you try to behave a little more like heart-throbs please. Alan is doing fine but a neck beard Joe? And that tongue, Hugh? Stephanie..in the UK there are two IDENTICAL CD's for In Demand on sale. CD1 and CD2..the only difference just by looking at them is a black sticker on the front..one says CDI (that has the video) and CD2 (that just has songs on it). My version of CD1 has 4 tracks in total (and that includes the video on track 4). Check back to your store and see if the two versions exist in Australia. Check carefully, the two CD's really are identical to look at. You might have picked up the wrong one?

I read the article on English people(men)in particular who sum up the attitude of Englishmen as beeing not sought after and the world opinion in general of not being seen as 'lovers' and prone to be eg. Irish-English or Scotish-Engish etc. Bravo to the one who stood up for the Englishmen' defense in general and particularly the person among us who sighted AR as a great example of a false stereotype. In an old inteview on the US television show "the view" as AR was being interviewed he made jokes about English men being unassuming. He was so charming. It is one of the available downdloads from the video section of the Fan Page. I downloaded the second part because it was Alan Rickman with Emma Thompson and her mother talking about "Winter Guest". He is definitely anything but unassuming. He was witty and charming so I downloaded part one andit was a prelude for them picking on him in great fun in the second part of the interview. I read over the article suggested and I thought it worth the read for every country has it's stereo-type that is false and often unfair. Bravo for your tenacity to point out AR growing sex appeal and charismatic even funny side to his interviews. He draws the line where he chooses and their is nothing wrong in that at all. Thanks for the article....Joan M T

Just heard about your site from a good friend who reads it all of the time. Joan mentioned several movies as the Rickman fan that she is and I stumbled across Dark Harbor in the video shop. I watched it and I tend to agree with her that it was worth the time and money. I would like to see some of his other films but I need some suggestions. I believe that she has decided to sit on the side lines and just read your comments for awhile. However, I am not shy to ask questions. I have none at this time but I see a lot of possibilities. The movie I did see was a bit slow but it was like watching a hitchcock film. You never knew quite where it was leading. It is late must run so will tune in tomorrow. Jillian Thomas

That's great, Judy! I think there are several things on that site which mean it should be seen on generation 4 and above browsers. It also works better in Internet Explorer than Netscape, but the differences didn't warrant a major overhaul... I imagine though, quite a few websites must appear differnt to you now though! I remember the first time I upgraded from IE3 to 4 and could suddenly see all those menu buttons change when I ran my mouse over them - felt like a blanket had been lifted!
News IS slow these last 2 weeks, isn't it??? Keep hoping someone will sneak a picture of AR as Snape onto the internet when he starts filming...

Christine, au contraire! The aussie dollar has plummeted even relative to the Canadian dollar. I only tell people the aussie price because it probably works out cheaper, including shipping. At todays exchange rate, you can buy the In Demand CD from Sanity for $5.60CAN ($6.95AUS), plus shipping. If you buy the same CD from the UK, it will cost you $8.80CAN + Shipping. Its all up to you, the buyer, as to whether or not you decide to buy overseas or wait until next year for its release in North America. Bit like we in Australia have to decide whether to spend $US buying a video of Mesmer or Dark Harbor or Judas Kiss and convert it to PAL format or wait for the possibility it may be released here (which is looking exceptionally slim for Mesmer!). The choice is yours.

So, she must mean the Bryan Adamns video of RHPOT?? Anyway, TOTP2 is repeated, I think, on Saturday afternoon at about 4pm.

What's the best way for Canadians to get the In Demand CD? Our Australian friends have said that the Aussie $ is about par with ours but the postage would probably be a fortune and make up for the difference with the US $. Any advice on this?

Glad some of you have found the In Demand CD. I'm still waiting for my stock to come in-hopefully any day now. BTW, to change the subject-here's a strange coincidence. If you read the credits of Truly, Madly, Deeply, you'll see the actress who plays Maura is named Stella Maris. Now that is a name that figures very prominently in the film An Awfully Big Adventure. Coincidence? What gives? :)

Stephanie - glad its not just me! However, made my lunchtime pilgramage to HMV and its there and IT HAS THE VIDEO!!!! Therefore, all you people who waited to see if the aussie version had the video for sure (like it was previously verified by Mindy) - it is here and our dollar has cratered that little bit more making it a bargain to just about everyone except NZ... So, if any North Americans wish to buy In Demand at the aussie rate (cheaper than the UK), then it can be found at Sanity Music and Chaosmusic (those links are about as close as I can get you to the page where you order). I hope Texas wasn't expecting great results on their debut in Australia this week, given it took an additional 2 days for it to start appearing in the stores!

Hi all. Gail, Ruby did a tryout run of Stressed in Australia about 4 months ago. It's very similar in format (and material) to the one you mentioned that AR directed and was subsequently televised. It was very entertaining, typical Wax, but nothing really new or innovative. It is very much a dramatic performance of a one-woman play, as opposed to 'stand-up', to the point where if she missed a word, she would backtrack and do it again. Sally, I've searched a half dozen stores in Adelaide - no one has yet - 'end of the week' they say. Who knows? Has anyone seen it on Oz TV yet?

Adelaide, Australia - Tuesday, October 10, 2000 at 17:11:07 (PDT)
Stezi - I looked and couldn't find the pictures! Where are they stashed???
FYI - I have looked for Texas' CD in Sydney to see if it has the video on it, and they still haven't put it on the shelf! When I asked, they looked it up on thier computer, said, "Yep, we have it..." promptly strode over to where I was looking and then went, 'Nope, it hasn't arrived yet - check back later in the week..." So, maybe some other Australians out there may want to try at their local music store and see if they have a bit more luck than the heart of Sydney????!!!

Tiffany, I would suspect many who frequent this guestbook will not indulge their ages... But, hey - AR is great and its super you like him! I reckon he will be great in HP - Snape is a good role for him. I presume you've seen Galaxy Quest? Its just one of the best comedy films out there - and I think I would say that even if AR hadn't been in it! Otherwise, try finding Truly, Madly, Deeply or Sense and Sensibility, Die Hard, Robin Hood, January Man (which isn't very good - but AR is). If you are into history, Michael Collins and Rasputin are both good films with AR in them. I'm sure others could add something to that. Dogma though, will be out of your reach for a few more years due to some over-excessively used swear words!

Joan, please don't take offense. I was not referring to you specifically, but just wanted to remind everyone, that's all. As I said before, one of the main reasons we're here is to have discussions. Chelo Velo: for what ever this is worth.I direct you to a company who may just have a subsidiary in the UK?? I a Canadian who dealt with a company in the USA without searching any further until they put me on to the Canadian source in Toronto. "Videoflicks@aol.com" is US while the off shoot for we Canadian AR fans is "Videoflicks@aol.ca" which for us eliminates the rate of exchange. They accept comments. If you inquire they might pass you on to someone more convenient to you. They actually carry all of his movies listed by AR's name, indivdual title or the full list. I received Mesmer and Dark Harbor through them with several from a less amiable source. I hit on "Videoflicks@aol.com" through trial and error. It is just a suggestion. You yourself seem to have exhausted your own possibilities in your search. I may not be living in the UK but my heart if there. Good luck on your search. If you don't ask them by E-mail you will never know if this company can be of service to you. Just remember the rate of exchange and shipping and handling if you deal with them directly. It can be a shock. Goodluck in your search and hopefully someone will suggest a more convenient source for you that will carry all of the choice that you want right in the UK...Good cheer and good luck!!!

Yes, one of the main purposes of this Guestbook is to have a forum to discuss his work. However, as a courtesy to those who haven't had the chance to see a particular film, especially for people living in countries where they must wait months, sometimes a year+, before it is available to them, please DO post spoiler warnings if containing plot twists, endings, etc., so that readers who do not want these things revealed, may skip that post if they so choose.
I have added warnings to the below posts for future readers.

Can any of you picture-grabber folk out there tell me if my (so far) favorite scene from a movie is a still anywhere? It's in An Awfully Big Adventure, when O'Hara's coming down the aisle in the theatre as they're doing the ship scenery. The camera has a full shot of him, and he sort of stands on one hip and puts one hand on the other, pulling his long coat back a bit in the process. For some reason, I love that stance and expression. So, anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks,

To the Dark Harbor discussers---there was a flurry of comments, some rather insightful about motivation and analysis, on one of the egroups. ar, I think, but it might have been the AR-Chat. You might want to subscribe and check through the archives. After talking over some points there, I want to see it again, even though it was not an emotionally engaging movie for me---none of the characters were particularly appealing or sympathetic to me. Ay, possibly - but I have managed to regularly read this guestbook for 6 months now, and that was the first big spolier to be introduced. Basic plot details will probably always be discussed, but twists I think should only be mentioned with Spoiler alerts. I admit, I am very pedantic over this, to the point where I refuse to watch movie shorts in the cinema anymore (particularly of comedies) as they give away too much. Isn't there anyone out there who like suprises????

there is enough complexity in Mr. Rickman's performances to interest one even after the first viewing-even when one knows the plotline. The "spoiler" comment was a good reminder, however. Although if we wait til everyone everywhere had seen a film, we would never have anything to discuss

I have a teenager {twenty four is still an adolescent in this day and age} and I understand completely being "thrown off guard". I am considering getting a suit of armour. I can understand your feelings about "Dark Harbor". I saw it at SIFF, and the silence was deafening at the ending---lots of shocked and disappointed females. The DVD commentary indicates that both actors were reluctant about the kissing scene--ACH, the director, expressed surprise that they both showed up the morning of that scene. Norman Reedus is not someone I would want to kiss, so that made it even harder to witness!!!

From 6 October "Evening Standard":
HEADLINE: Rickman stays cool
londoner's diary
THAT BIBLE of male fashion, GQ magazine, launched GQ Cool at Somerset House last night, a collection of portraits defining the essence of male cool over the last decade. A leather-clad David Beckham, David Bowie, Noel and Liam Gallagher and Britain's favourite villain, actor Alan Rickman, are some of those deemed cool enough to feature. I bumped into Rickman as he was handing over his American Express card. "I've got to buy the book because I'm in it," he told me, "my picture is very good because you can't see my face".
Soon to start filming for Harry Potter, he was ambiguous about being branded as cool. "I'm not sure what it means actually"
Author and GQ fashion director Jo Levin had no doubts: "Rickman has it.
Cool takes time, it's not about looks, you have to acquire it."

Julia: Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and your support. You are correct and I did try to explain my initial reaction but I needed to here it from an AR true fan like yourself. My son'ssnappy remarks kind of got to me for I knew that it takes a fine actor to pull that kind of scene off having us here all fooled by the ending. I am only a few months youger that AR and fantasize I shall. I have heard a lot of personal stuff on this message board for we have been drawn by a single fascination for this man in one sense or another. I only brought the AR part of myself to the board. My personal stuff does not belong here. I never intended to malign AR in anyway. I credit him for pulling off one convincing scene especially in light of what you said. Rima Horton is a lucky woman. He is a private person as it should be.. As for the buff then Dark Harbor is where you will get a glimpse of that. It is a good solid movie. Forgive me fellow fans for my own insecurities. I am rarely shocked by anything anymore. The moral of my story is don't watch a movie first with your 24yrs old smart alecky son on a holiday visit from the army. As an actor, it is very frightening, yet flattering when someone begins to associate you with the characters you play. It just means you played the part well. Joan, you didn't think AR was a rapist after you saw RHPOT, so why should you think he's gay after seeing DkH? As far as I know, he is VERY straight, and he has put off playing a homosexual part for a long time. He was offered the role of the gay director in AABA first, but turned it down. He is straight, and don't worry--- plenty of women fantasize about gay men too. I, for one, fantasize about Rupert Everett. Go Figure.

To the posting I just made I do apologize for sounding less of an AR fan. I am still a huge fan. I guess there is art is a suspense that keeps you guessing to the very end especially if the ending is not what you might have expected. I never saw myself as a prude. I guess being teased and being humiliated by a grown son got to me. I picked the movie out to share a good film with a great actor in it with my son the military man and it being what I did not expect overcame me....Sorry gang for this reation...forgive me and know that inspite of it all I am an AR fan still.....Joan please don't berate me for venting my feelings....

Has anyone seen Dark Harbour. Well if you want to see him in the buff then this is the movie for you. I am a huge fan of AR but I should hope that he is not in real life as he plays in this movie. I was in suspense all right but the ending left me a little nauseous (spelling ???) I guess I am just a heterosexual being who's love stories don't turn out like that. I chose this movie because of him to view with a group and now I am getting teased. You will rake me over the coals for this but I thought he was quite a hunk of a man. I even fantasized about him and, and, and. The kisses were way beyond what I expected. I assume from this that I hope he was acting and playing his part well for everyone keeps bringing up Rima Horton's name. Is she a friend only??? I am terribly sorry that my perceptions were a bit tainted by this. He is a brilliant actor but AR are there no limits or boundaries that you will not cross for your craft? Help me to see the art form in this anyone please!!!He is a very sexy man indeed and that is why I expected something more out of this movie. I know a fine man who is Gay with no prejudice. He is a wonderful friend. I just feel that the movie should have been rated or categorized a little better..I change my name to Miss Slightly Disillusioned for the moment.....JT

Getting the BIGGER picture for the In Demand is very simple.
1. Open Windows Explorer to your CDRom Drive
2. Install Quicktime by clicking the Qt4.exe file and follow the on screen instructions to the finish
3. Back in Windows Explorer double click on Texas.mov
4. Under the Movie heading in the Quicktime window is the faclility to double or full screen
Added bonus of running this way rather than through the CDRom start up is the option to move back and forth frame by frame using the right and left direction keys on the keyboard! There is a lot more in this video than you see at full speed.

Re: The Man Who Came to Dinner--Drat, I think Mary Anne (yes, *our* MA!) and I will be out to dinner just then--I'd like to see Nathan Lane, and Liam Neeson. (Fausta, I know *you'll* be watching. Did you know that Alan Bates will be on B'Way?) And Natasha R. For the moment, though, MA and I are the MARTS, here in, of all places, Memphis TN. Would you believe it? The night we meet for the first time, what is showing on HBO? Die Hard. I'm not making this up. I don't know who wins the Silver Thermos award for carrying on--she was mesmerized during the Ode to Joy scene. And what did we have for dinner? BBQ!
Many thanks to Suzanne and this GB (and FOF next door) for bringing new/old friends together, courtesy of AR.

Ah, its a shame that radio isn't visual as well because BBC 1 is certainly playing "In Demand" a LOT today... That would have helped all you people who have to wait until next year. Maybe the day will come when music video's can play in a little window at the top of the screen when listening to the radio...
Also turns out I am not the only person in Sydney tuned in to Radio 1 over the internet - they receieved another email from someone in Sydney rubbing it in about how they were off to Bondi beach tomorrow since its going to be 32C (somewhere around 90F)...

Last Wednesday night (27 Sept) was, as you know, the "Billy Elliot" film premiere. I didn't go to that, but I did go to the Ivy for dinner after the theatre. I had the very great pleasure of being seated at the table to the right of AR and his party of three ladies of a certain age, one of whom was Phyllida Law. The others were a mystery: redhead named Joan and a brunette who was not Rima Horton (I don't think). For two solid hours I could hear the velvet tones of that voice, even if I couldn't understand the conversation. They were there when I arrived at 10ish, and still there opening another bottle of wine when I left at midnight. Things got more interesting when Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson arrived at about 11pm or so, and were seated at the table on the other side of them. Redgrave is doing "The Cherry Orchard" at the National Theatre at the moment. Much greeting and carrying on. AR moved over to sit between the two and catch up, so he was no longer with his back to me. Sigh!!!!! One gorgeous man and 5 women who all clearly adored him.

They actually played a TEXAS video during Request Hour on MTV/2 this morning. Alas, it was *not* "In Demand." And I did not hear who requested it because I had the sound turned low, but when I heard the word "Texas," my ears perked up! The odd thing is, the video wasn't identified (name of band, song title, etc.) at the beginning or end, like most videos are. Anyway, if you want to see another video by Texas, Request Hour will be repeated tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET on MTV/2 (about 30 minutes into show). And, I don't know how much it will help, but you can make your request HERE. At least they'll see how in demand this video is!

Nothing special is required to play the video on the In Demand CD (CD1) It is just a Quicktime movie, even if you do not have Quicktime program on your machine, the CD installs Quicktime Version 4 on your computer. No worries, where ever you live, it will work - and very good quality it is too!

Isn't the internet marvy??? I had to look up some suburbs based on postcodes in Australia, and got carried away looking up postcodes all over the world. According to the Royal Mail website, to write to ARs agents, you need to be sending your correspondence to:
ICM,
Oxford House,
76 Oxford Street
London
W1D 1BS, UK
And the marvelous thing is, although there are about 4 other companies with that address, they all have a difference postcode, but that W1D bit is the clincher!

Well, even knowing what Mindy has said about the release date of "In Demand" I went down to Sanity's music store and... nothing. So, I tottled across the arcade to HMV and they confirmed 9th Oct is the Aust. release date (not suprising given Mindy's official sources). So, if anyone wants to hang out until then to order the CD from HMV.com.au or Sanity.com.au at a fraction of the price of Britain, I will pop down to the store at lunchtime on Monday (i.e. before any of you wake up and before America has even gone to bed on Sunday night...) and verify if the aussie release has the video on it or not. HMV didn't know and wouldn't until they get the disk in.

Hi Christine. In regard to the video. If we put some pressure on MTV maybe they would put it in a specific category or we would indeed have to strike it lucky to catch it and view it the way everyone else has. I sure would like to see that Tango as it was meant to be viewed. If there is a will there is a way. Maybe they will get with it and put the video on anyway. Hi Mary Anne, although I've not had the "pleasure" of seeing Closet Land (anyone, where's the best site to get a USA VHS copy?)I would always stick up for the acting nuances Madeline Stowe has when working with a sufficiently strong director. Her performance in "12 Monkeys" as a thoroughly professional woman who becomes seriously rattled by a series of progressively more unbelievable events was a wonder to behold (and probably, along with Terry Gilliam, elevated the level of acting AR chum Bruce Willis was capable of as well.)

And ...
Of course, given human nature, many other aspiring actresses out there will be turning green with envy at Cockburn's precocious achievements - not to mention that she can call someone of Alan Rickman's stature 'a good friend' and 'a superb director who can draw the best out of you because he is very calming, he doesn't put pressure on you but has a way of knowing what he wants and of getting it out of you.'
Cockburn does admit, though, that she's 'had periods where I haven't been working and it is hell'. Still, it is a measure of how far she has come in such a short time that she can already say, 'I feel if I gave up acting tomorrow I could because I've done really brilliant stuff.' And she's right.
It's here.

Re: ClosetLand. I wouldn't call it my "favourite" AR film; I can't say I have a favourite, as he is so good in many films! But I've thought for a long time that it may be his most brilliant piece of film work, because it is certainly a demanding role. Some of you have characterized it as "disturbing." Well, yes, it certainly is. I think what disturbs me personally is that The Interrogator, for all the cruelty and horror of his character, never entirely loses our sympathy (maybe sympathy is too strong a word, but it's the only one I can think of at the moment). We KNOW this man is dreadful and sadistic and cold as the grave, but the performance is still fascinating to watch. Rickman has that knack, doesn't he? What was that review phrase? That he "plays his lovers like villains and his villains like lovers . . ."
Also, it's unusual to see such a constant presence from him in a film--only one other person in CL (a strong enough actress, fortunately, not to be utterly lost playing opposite him). In some of his films, I have to resort to what's been called "The Rickmaniac's Best Friend": the fast-forward button! ;-)

He he... Off topic, but listening to Radio 1 here at work and see that Ruby Wax is in the top 10 rudest people on TV (as in obnoxious rude) - but she wasn't No. 1. That belonged to some lady which I'm sure only the British are blessed to know (sounded like a dreadful game show...) - someone who goes, "You are the weakest link!" and evicts them from the show.
I can assure you, the Aussie dollar is doing worse than Canada! We used to be on par until January this year when the powers that be decided to punish our backward thinking govt by selling our currency, and I suspect that will continue until the govt gets its head of the sand and stop working out how to get more tax from dodgers and start throwing some of that budget surplus back into Reseach and Development! The "In Demand" CD will play on your computer assuming you have a CD-ROM drive. I believe most DVD players installed in computer nowadays can usually play CDs as well - you would need to read the paperwork that came with your computer. There are no format restrictions with CDs in contrast to DVDs and Video Cassettes, so certainly, anyone in American can order the CD from a British website and it will play quite happily on their computers as long as they have a CD player. Specifics though - I don't know if In Demand wants Windows Media player... I'm glad to hear the video is seperate to the music though - I can't get a certain CD single I bought with a video on it to play on my computer at all because it wants to play the video every single time, and I don't have the time to download the gazillion MB Windows Media Player to watch the darn thing! Most annoying. So, good on Texas' marketers for making the video a seperate CD! Although, that only applies if you want to listen as well as watch...

Well, huh! Ian McKellan seems to have embraced technology and has his own official website - and he even puts stuff on it! Why can't AR (or at least, his agents??)? This is in response to McKellan posting some comments in response to quetions about Lord of the Rings movie being less than faithful to the books... Ah well!
Barbara, Foxtel doesn't have the channels you mentioned. Could explain things! Howeva, I found QDU so flawed to be practically unwatchable a second time - probably because I have lived and worked in the West Australian desert and that film didn't even come near it. And since when does the sun rise in the west??? I just can't believe ANYONE would be so stupid as to let an obvious flaw like that into a movie! All in all, rather fortunate that AR doesn't have an exccessively large role in it. Maybe I'll wait until it comes out on DVD so I can program it to see all his bits and nothing else. I dunno... Would have liked to see RHPOT though! My copy has a strange yellow tint to it...

I've never played a video CD on my pc before. Is this normal, or did I get two bad CD's in one morning, or maybe all the copies are like this?? Empire online has a piccy of AR attending the Billy Elliot premiere in London last Wednesday. It at Empire Online - you have to scroll down and click on the link to see his picture at the bottom of the article. Its a blurred picture, but there is enough detail to see he looks even better than at the Bruce Willis tribute...

Therese,
Re: Lumiere & Company (which is in his resume), was made in 1995. The version I have is in English (which I recorded when it aired on the IFC Channel), though some of the directors speak other languages (with English subtitles). Neal Jordan did a behind-the-scenes segment of Michael Collins. I believe he used the Lumiere camera to make some of the "archival footage" for the film. And Alan is in it for about... 5 seconds: he looks (over his de Valera glasses) directly into the camera as he walks by.

You're very welcome, Karen! :-), - Monday, October 02, 2000 at 14:12:31 (PDT)
Well, I may be the last person in the GB to do so, but I have FINALLY seen In Demand!!! My heartfelt thanks to the person who a week or so ago posted the videogram versions. I'm a technical klutz, and got nowhere with the RealPlayer version. So again, THANK YOU, and WOW, Alan looks great, even with the dark hair :-) I'm going to watch it again right now!

I was surfing around on the net, and came across a hit that listed Alan Rickman. It's called "Lumiere & Company," it's in Spanish with English subtitles, and is available from Amazon.com for $17.99.
Anyone know anything about it? Rickman is listed in the credits.
The blurb on IMDB stated:
40 international directors were asked to make a short film using the original Cinematographe invented by the Lumiere Brothers, working under conditions similar to those of 1895. There were three rules: (1) The film could be no longer than 52 seconds; (2) no synchronized sound was permitted; (3) no more than three takes. The results run the gamut from Zhang Yimou's convention-thwarting joke to David Lynch's bizarre miniature epic.

Thank you for the information about "Help! I'm a Fish," Eva. They aren't selling the soundtrack CD on-line anywhere, are they?
Fausta, lovely Tango Rickmanista!

Last week I wrote a "what gives?" email to InterMedia Films in the UK regarding Blow Dry. This morning I received this response:
For your information, Blow Dry will be released in The US and Canada on the 27th October 2000 through Miramax distribution. The trailer is in the final stages of Post Production and will be available to download from the official site www.blow-dry.co.uk in the next fortnight.
Thank you for your enquiry,

Short and terse, in that famous understated British manner. Fingers crossed.

For those of you buying "In Demand" online, it's been released as a two cd set. The VIDEO is on CD ONE.
I wouldn't want anyone expecting the video to end up receiving the cd with FOUR different versions of the song and NO video....
If anyone was having trouble finding it online, you should be able to get it from www.hmv.co.uk. I'm pretty sure they deliver worldwide.

I thought that Magda made a good point. Although we feel that the guestbook is safe and populated with nice people, not everyone that visits here is a nice person, and might take advantage of a persons vulnerability by sending anonymous nasty e mails--much like those awful people who yell"jump" when someone is standing on the ledge of a building. I have seen some awful nasty spiteful interchange on the internet, although I was unaware when I first got a computer. It might be safer to not use your e mail address if you feel vulnerable and injured by e mail responses. I think that is why many people have suggested a more private venue, rather than a public guestbook. Cheers

Thanks Georgiana: I did not realize that the interview on the "View" with AR and Emma Thompson was aired so long ago. I enjoyed the interview though and thanks for the information

I would say, that is Alan Rickman who is reciting/singing Intelligence on the Help, I am a Fish sound track CD. I base my case on the tradition that it wellknown that actors often do not do the singing in animated movies, like Val Kilmer did not sing in Prince of Egypt and when that is the case it is not a hidden fact. When the actor sings, like Mel Gibson in Pocahontas it is publicly acknowledged. Alan Rickman is listed as the performer. It is likely that he do not sing in other, more demanding parts of the movie, but it would not be in the tradition of animated movies, nor in Alan Rickman caracter to take credit for something he did not do.

Hello Everyone, Darlene here. I was told by a friend that some of you were asking about me. Fist let me say that at the moment I am well. I had a bad patch with my daughter but she is find now.
I stopped posting here for a while because I felt that to be mean to someone was the most unfair and cowardly thing to do. I was very hurt and yes, very angery.
Lets get something straite. I would never post anything about myself or anyone else I care about that I did want anyone to know or that, that person didn't want me to post. I asked my friend parent how they would feel about me friend. She had a illness that affects so many of us an part of the reason it does is the fact that we do not talk about it. Ahmee Loved AR just as much as I or any of you did and if she would have lived then she would have been here to tell you that. She would have talked about our friendship and the AR debait team we were forming on my site. Magda you talked about Doctors and others. Well I am a doctor. And I lot of my friends are in the professions that you mentioned and you know a lot of them belong to chat groups and feel that it helps sometimes to vent there. I am not saying this out of anger. You see I come from two cultures of people who use words and share feels to tell the story of their lives and loves. There was a time when black people were killed and beaten for reading, writing, or speaking about their ture face. What I shared with you was part of me and weather you liked what I said or not I did it not out of fear that I would run into someone who would mean me harm but out of my great love for human kind. I lost my fear of people (THANK GOD!) a long time ago. So thank you Magda for your words of concern but,I pray everyday to the great one above to protect me, my family and all of you. I know that my life is safe and sound so don't worry about that.
Now that I have said that I see that here are some folks that I don't know posting now. To all of you I say Hello. Della has told you of my writing venter a comedy called basiced on the AR Movie Die Hard, call, DANCE HARD.I know that there are some people that may not be intrested in this kind of thing so if you would like to see what I have so far please feel free to email me privatly. I would love to share what we have so far. Let me also say that I am sorry that this post is so long and OT and it will not happen again. Unless I feel I have alot to say. Hey I'm a writer. :-) Love and Peace, Darlene (Little Deer) a.k.a. "D" PS> Sorry about my spelling I am dislexic.

Della, "The View" interview included Emma Thompson and her mother, Phyllida Law, and aired several years ago when Rickman was promoting "The Winter Guest."

To Joan: Yes it was ARs voice on "the sun ain't gonna shine anymore" wasn't it great? It also was truly, madly, deeply. Good for you---now tell me about the view---I don't usually watch that show cause I'm usually busy at the time it comes on but if I"d known he was gonna be on I'd have taped it everyday---do you have a date for that show? I'm sure we'd all like to hear more about it. Thanks, della

I am delighted to be among this group of fellow AR fans and find the comments informative and indeed witty. I try to offend no one but that happens at times, we are all human. We share a common bond and as I read the comments about AR's singing voice it reminded me of the duet he did titled "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Any More" which was a download piece from this fan page Sound Gallery, well worth the download. I could have the title from which it came topsy turvy when it comes to the movie but he played a character named "Jamie" The movie and don't quote me is "Madly, Truly, Deeply". I believe this is his true voice unless he has taken some singing voice lessons in the mean time. What do you think? Hello to all and to Georgiana and the other regulars who are refreshingly candid. Our AR seems to be cropping up everywhere these days and that is good. His interview with the women on the U.S. show "The View" which can also be downloaded had me laughing aloud. AR is a very open and witty individual. How played Mesmer which I find ironic since he himself is mesmerizing...This is my first stop on my internet journey so I shall return..JT

Has anyone else noticed the extreme similarity betwixt the recent Volvo television advert and the beginning of "Dark Harbor?" Someone on Madison Ave. has seen this film!

Re: Help I'm a Fish, I would hate to disillusion anyone but a friend of mine was auditioned for the "singing voice" of A.R. for this film - he was told that A.R. didn't think his own singing voice was up to it. My friend didn't get the part so we can't be sure, but it is likely that the singing wasn't done by Alan but by a good impressionist.

Just watched an interview with Sharleen Spiteri on Planet Pop. She said that they just rang AR and asked if he wanted to be in the video. Apparently he loved the song and said yes straight away. She also said that it was his idea to do the tango. They had dance lessons from Michael Jackson's choreographer. Also read an article in Empire magazine about Harry Potter. No mention of AR, but then again, no mention of Professor Snape either. Make of that what you will.
