Alan Rickman Guestbook
(October 2003)
Start reading at bottom of page.
Hi! I'm excited that I got a letter from Alan's assistant Ms. Parker yesterday. Some of you may remember that in June, a notice from Ms. Parker was put on the News& Update page on the Alan Rickman the Voice site. The notice basically said that Alan was regrettably unable to fulfil requests for autographs at that time due to his work schedule, he felt sorry and wanted us to understand the situation. I wrote to Ms. Parker a few days later saying that I shared the notice with other Japanese AR fans and we totally understood the situation, and we were touched by your thoughtfulness. I never expected to receive a reply. However, yesterday, I got a letter from her saying thank you to my letter posted in June and apologising the delay of her reply. It was so touching and I wanted to share this with many AR fans! ^.^

pixxaa, do I speak English?!?!? Are you teasing me? *giggles*. I speak "American". You are in Germany? Warum nicht sprecken sie Duetch? Are you wondering if I speak German? Nine! Schlus silly me! It is odd to understand, write, and talk English, but when someone from another English speaking country talks, their English confuses me! Even when AR speaks or is quoted I don't always understand. ^_~

Thanks for the explanation of w***er. I've been puzzled by this since Bridge J. Diary. LOL, No wonder CF challenges HG to street fight. English does have its many interesting varieties.
AR is nonetheless the most gorgeous Brit. And MANY thanks to you who attended Old Laundry. Pics and narratives are priceless.

#736, the November 7, 2003 issue of Entertainment Weekly (with Keanu on the cover) has a little bit about Love, Actually on pages 14-15 (not a review). Alan is in picture no. 5 of 9. Each character is described followed by a quote. Alan's section is as follows: "Actually, He's...Harry, Emma Thompson's husband who embarks on an affair with a coworker. Story Line From His Own Life That Would Have Fit the Movie. 'You mean, about adulterous relationships? Like I'd tell you!'" Ann Williams

Roman, you asked if I was a thespian and I am not.pixxaa, I look at your name and think "Pix Anne", like a pixie blowing fairy kisses. You and GML talking about that Brit slang word, "wanker"? The English language is so difficult; it's fun to play with, though. Man! you have to be so careful what you say! It must drive foreigners wild when they try to learn it!
Who cares if they criticize AR, all great leaders are hated! Besides, I'm aware of someone's faults, but still like them. ^_^

Oh, I've just seen the 'Love Actually' trailer on TV. Two glimpses of the spectacled one. Don't want to spoil it by describing the scenes, but it looked good. Mr R and Nighy certainly did. And thanks for the Radio Times info, Sue, I'll try my luck with my closest Warner cinema. Uh, once I've found out where it is. And nobody should worry about the Daily Mail stuff.... Really, the 'journalist' deserves a medal for this textbook piece of spin: take a friend's positive remark out of context (er, I don't think the original context is too hard to guess at;) and make it sound like an insult by sticking it into another context. Can't be attacked for misquoting as the quote itself is probably correct. I still can't see why the guy bothers myself, though, I mean, most of the people who buy the Daily Mail know who Arnie is but probably don't know who Alan Rickman is anyway. Driving friends against each other? They surely don't read the stuff either or have stopped caring about what it says years ago. There's only one explanation: it starts with a 'w' and ends with 'r', in six letters, and is all about personal gratification :)

I don't think the Daily Mail "writer" understood ET's comment at all. It sounds like a light hearted remark about AR's disinterest in cheating on his girlfriend rather than a put down. What a whiner this guy is! Everyone in London, please complain to the editor. All along, AR has been publicity shy and impatient with those who parade themselves. To our dismay, we have to look for him in articles and TV shows.(Gives us somethng to do) I doubt he will do any guest shots on any of the US talk shows, which is fine because I hate watching talk shows! Let the "pretty faces" do them.(His is the nicest face, I think.)

Nice Card Carole! There is a 4 page photo piece on Love Actually in the new Empire magazine. Here is a Selfridges Pic. The accompanying comment by Richard Curtis is as follows:
It's All Smiles Now...
"This photo was taken during a shoot in Selfridge's that lasted from 9pm until 5am the next morning. It must have been taken early. By 5am, no-one was smiling anymore."
There is also a review of the film which they give 3*.
FYI Selfridges is a large department store in Oxford Street, second only to Harrods in fame, reputation etc.

We all remember the "Wicked Whisperer" from his wicked post about a critic who wanted Mr. Rickman to sign "Severus Snape" on a picture of himself as the character. Mr. Rickman declined, and was tarred as rude because of it. I had him sign a Snape photo shortly thereafter for my granddaughter, Zelda, who at five had no difficulty distinguishing between an actor and his role. Got a "To Zelda, Love, Alan Rickman" for that. It appears to be a personal vendetta of WW's. I have trouble finding any "low opinion" in Emma's words. From "The View" interview, and all their promotional appearances (i.e., Venice) it looked like that all had a rousing good time on the set of "The Winter Guest." And her comments about him in the S&S Diaries are all kind.

I agree with you guys Wicked Whisperer sucks(sorry for using the "s" word). I'm never impress by journalists who are using made-up names to sign their trash. It shows how coward he is and his article must not be taken seriously. Nice picture! Thank you Juliet and Sue!

Mortianna, change that daydream to diagonal rows of tinfoil to get good blond streaks with no grow-out lines. Doesn't take long. A very good friend is a Beverly Hills private hairdresser to the stars, specialty men (although you'd think the ultrahetero Warren Beatty "Shampoo" character was based upon him, with happier ending,) and I watch his methods. I am a photographer here, Mistress of Illusion: there are reasons why rich/famous people's hair looks better.

mortianna - my new favourite phrase of that type is 'A quaffle short of a quidditch match' - use it! It should be introduced into the popular vernacular! Anyway, I may have been the only one of the Australians here who watched Rik Mayall's new series on the ABC last Thursday night - and obviously the UK folks will have seen it 500 light years ago - but was I right in thinking that was the same fellow playing Mayall's butler-type as played Nina's LIVING lover (as opposed to her LIVE-IN-BUT-DEAD lover) Richard (was that his name? I hope so) in 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'? It looked like him a little, but I forgot the check the credits. Anyone know or should I go web-hunting?

Let's see.... Judging from the acute dislike of Rickman, the judgemental tone, the poor word choice.... yes, I think the Wicked Whisperer must be no other than

Benedict Nightingale of the Times .
I don't think Nightingale has ever, in his history of writing, written a positive review of AR -- who he probably believes is inflicted with Sneering Mouth Disease (click my name to see R Cubed, and Sneering Mouth Disease).

Roman - to enter is not enough, I'm afraid. You have to be initiated:-) Go to the quick guide to html. you'll be enlightened. I know I was... I think this writer (what'shisname) is just an example for why AR doesn't like the press too much. The quote by ET is a perfectly funny and sincere way of one friend talking about the other - and she is perhaps talking about the real AR in contrast to his role in LA, perhaps. He seems to be - temptable in the film, but not in real life. There was a quote in the same vein by Beatie Edney(sp?) who worked with him on stage, I seem to recall.
mortianna
I wouldn't know about LA, as I can't watch any trailer, system at work is just too dumb, but said to be improved soon - there is hope for me:-) - Friday, October 31st 2003 - 02:41:30 AM
I don't know what this "Wicked Whisper" gentleman meant by quoting Emma Thompson (was that a real complaint or a tongue-in-cheek comment?), but I thought it was pretty decided Alan and Miss Thompson have been very good friends, for a long time, they've worked together several times (PoA's just the next on the list) and he's even directed her on a movie. Now, from what I've heard, they can both be very "difficult" people, s o to say, but they seem to admire each other's talent greatly (I'm still laughing about Alan's answer to that quetion "So, Emma Thompson is assertive?" "Just a bit!"). And now I'm giggling myself silly with Emma's quote. I can just imagine her raising her top and Alan turning to her with a raised eyebrow... "Well? What's your point?!" Oh, dear... Joan, are we colleagues, then? *waves "Hurrah for the thespians" flag* BTW, I seem to be the only one with this problem here. I can't type separate paragraphs in the guestbook. As I write, I'm having some five or six paragraphs, but I'm sure in the post the text'll show up as just one, solid, paragraph. Does the "Enter" key have a problem with me?

With the Daily Mail thing, i think it was a reference to how he approaches sexual situations, not about his acting, so in believe that was out of context. If the person who wrote the column is found lynched from a lamp-post tomorrow it was....er....nothing to do with me....

Alan wanted first for Snape: Here's the quote from Chris Columbus explaining why Roth was approached before Alan: ----------------------------
From: TOTAL FILM DECEMBER 2001
'...One thing that proved surprisingly possible was finding exactly the right cast. As Columbus puts it, the adult cast list "reads like a British greatest hits." With Richard Harris as Dumbledore, Maggie Smith as McGonagall, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Ian Hart as Quirrell and Alan Rickman as Snape, you can see what he means. "It was embarrassing because everyone who was our first choice said 'yes'," Columbus continues. "There was a situation with Tim Roth, who we first approached for Snape (Roth opted to do Planet of the Apes instead), but ironically, the only resaon why we didn't go straight for Alan Rickman was because he was the one person who we thought would say 'no'. And it turned out he wanted to do it very much."...' -------------

Puzzling comment by Emma Thompson. Rickman is unavailable and probably finds it easier to overlook "overtures" rather than having to reject someone outright. Is ripping open her top Emma's idea of saying hello, or a party trick I wonder...she would be lucky if he didn't look down his nose at her and say "that's a bit inappropriate, don't you think"...

I've already discovered it thanks to the AR Fan Page Links (Stezi's Rickman Page), love those ladybugs! and I go there many times.Roman, Thank you for the helpful post about loesje's question if there's a movie where AR cries hard. I learned during a scene where crying was needed acting was too emotional for me; but forcing myself not to laugh when someone says something funny is impossible! In theater I belong in the audience - the stage is truly for people who want to work. Movies are worse! they want you there when?!?!? 5:00 AM! oh boy. 9_9

I've seen pictures of Alan, Rima, Emma and her mom (Phyllida?) together at functions. Seems to me that they all get along. This guy doesn't seem to like Allan. I'm wondering if he took Emma's words out of context just to be spiteful? That's assuming she even said those words of course.

LEE, the only other actor I could have ever seen bringing Snape to life was Jeremy Irons. Oh yes Kate, the name was Tim Roth that I saw. I typed in the wrong name. So it is true then. Wow, I wonder how different things would be if Tim Roth had accepted the part instead of Alan Rickman. I had never seen Alan before HP. I can’t imagine anyone but Alan playing him, but Tim Roth looks more like the Snape in the books I think. I wonder why Roth turned it down and why J.K. Rowling wanted Roth first if in fact she did.

Did anyone in the UK see this in the "Wicked Whispers" column: ... "And finally, I am delighted to learn that the charming Emma Thompson shares my low opinion of the over-rated Die Hard thespian Alan Rickman. Recalling their joint experience on Richard Curtis's forthcoming Love Actually, she says: 'I think you have to be really bloody good to get through to Alan. You would have to go up and lift your top up and say: "How about it?" Then he would still go: "How about what?"'"

Indeed, here, LA has been (discreetly) advertised as a Hugh Grant film - or, more precisely, as another film with Hugh Grant in the lead. Which is exactly the same thing. Frustrating, but not very surprising, seing as over here, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Colin Firth are much bigger than Alan. On top of it, a portuguese actress plays Colin Firth's love interest in the movie, so, Colin gets a little more exposure over here. By the way, a HP site has posted, a few days ago, a number of call sheets for PoA, and in one of them, Alan was mentioned. I was starting to wonder, with the ammount of Alanless call sheets I skimmed through, if he was even there at all. In it, he was listed alongside the child actors and David Thewlis, with a particularity: below the actor list, there was a little note saying something like "Alan Rickman must leave the studio at 1700 at the latest". Of ocurse, it could mean a bucketload of things, but the first one that came through my mind was "play rehearsal". You don't usually schedule doctor/etc. appointments for after 5 pm, and it was clearly a preplanned affair. It oculd have been an evening event he had to attend, but I somehow don't see Alan putting an evening out before his work - particularly seeing as he spends so little time in the HP set as it is, he probably would have saved the "bash", or whatever it was, for a day when he wasn't shooting...

Jennifer and others who have noticed how little AR is used in LA promos: apparently, my husband has informed me, the world in general thinks of this film as a Hugh Grant film! I got the last seat in the theater last night at Oak Tree (thank you so much to the kind organizer who gave me hers) and saw "Love Actually" in a preview showing. Let me say it was very little like I expected. Charming, funny, poignant, sad, provocative--the best of British comedy. Totally engrossing, in spite of the many stories. Emma Thompson -- amazing! Our man, very funny with Linney. It is lush. And Adam Godley has a small role. I look forward to going back when it opens.

I saw an ad last night on NBC for Love Actually when I was watching West Wing. There was no mention of AR. Most of the clips showed Hugh Grant. Maybe they think American women are more interested in Hugh than Alan?

To Jennifer, Calgary: re: music from TMD...I think you'll find that most if not all of the cello music is by J.S. Bach. (As Nina tells Mark during the hopping scene, she loves Bach.) The concert in Nina's living room is one of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. The final scene features the Andante from Bach's Keyboard Concerto #7 as Jamie wipes tears from his eyes and the closing credits appear (never fails to bring tears to my eyes too!). By the way, the screenplay's final direction reads "Jamie's face is awash with tears". Of course, this is not quite the case, but Anthony Minghella mentioned that he had a hard time getting Alan to show his emotions to that extent. P.S. I don't believe Alan ever shared an apartment with Juliet Stevenson, although he, Ruby Wax, and Juliet were all members of the Royal Shakespeare Company during his first (unhappy) stint there in the late 70s.

The 'where is it playing' site does include part of Canada - Ontario. Sorry, Jennifer. It says Love Actually opens both in Toronto and Cobourg on Nov. 7th. Hmm, we'll see. Any other Rickman fans in Cobourg?! On another recently discussed although off-topic subject - I was pretty sure I had added a note yesterday about using the free basic version of Zone Alarm to screen out most pop-ups. Somebody been doing some over zealous clean-up?? I am in no way connected to the company, but saw the program recommended on a techie programme on BBC World.

safari on the mac os can eliminate unwanted pop ups, but the people who run your web hosting site can easily embed those ads at the top of your web page, and there is nothing you can do about it, it's just programmers one-upmanship. Hope that helps even though it won't stop it.

Thanks to VH, who posted the Moviephone LA clip link, I've found a Nov. 1 screening of LA in my town. Other interested statesiders can check here to see if there's a show beginning Nov. 1, by using a zip code. Web experts: Safari had eliminated my site's pop-up ads with a browser setting, but Tripod has now sneakily added huge boxes of embedded ads (above a visible left arrow)--if anyone knows a browser setting on Safari or other means which would eliminate the new involuntary ads, I would be grateful if you shared. Thanks.

May I add a bit of my own to the "crying" question? I don't know in which context your acquaintance told you that, Joan, but from my experience, though sometimes actors do as you mentioned and don't really cry, simply pretend to, in order to avoid exaustion - in other occasions, they do cry (as in, "letting the tears fall down"), but there's a degree of separation - "they" are not crying, the "character" is. Sounds silly unless you're experiencing it, I suppose... I myself *grin* cried in my very first play. I was playing a widow (I had to take center stage and everyone could see my face clearly), and figured it'd be more realistic if there were real tears, so I cried. Did the same for the second play, though with different motivations - but the moment I stepped offstage, I came out of character - otherwise I do believe it'd be quite the ordeal. I was weary, as it was, already - but not more than if I'd played an intensely physical role. An actor - who's pretty famous over here - was on telly one day, commenting on how, in one of his plays, the lady who costarred with him had a very intense scene, in which her character - a mother - received the news of her son's death, or something to that effect. His own character was meant to be terribly upset, and it all went well, until one day he - says he doesn't know why - let himself go and fell in hysterics over the pain of the characters. The lady only noticed his crying was real and not an act when they were mid-scene already. He also commented he didn't do that again, and focused on the pain of the charactr, and not his own, to build his performance, otherwise, the strain would kill him. Hope I was helpful. :)

AR's crying question: Someone told me that in theater when you cry you are supposed to *look* like you are crying and *sound* like you are crying, but not to actually cry real tears so you don't get sick from exhaustion doing that show after show.

SPOILER :Jennifer, AABA is a movie he's made in 96or perhaps 95,it's about AR who's coming back to his old theatre company to play Peter Pan, there's also a 16 year old girl named Stella on the set, she's in love with the boss "meredith"played by Hugh grant, but he's gay ,and she let's herself in with P.L. o'Hara, played by Alan Rickman, they end up in bed , and that happens another time as well. PL is surching for his former love there, with herhe has a son so he believes, but can't find her, and after a whole lot of things that happen , he finally finds out that Stellla is his daughter instead of his son and he founds out that he had slept with his own daughter...

Hi Jennifer, AABA = An awfully big adventure Havent seen it myself but lovely pics here: http://www.alan-rickman.nl/adventure.htm And RoTN= expensive and worth it. His voice is just music. ***MAJOR Love Actually spoiler***
The November 4 issue of Time magazine has a 4-page spread on Love Actually. It consists mainly of a Q&A with Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and Richard Curtis. (My but Emma does like the F-word) There was no mention of AR in the Q&A but there was a four paragraph review of the movie. Don't read any further if you don't want to know about AR's story line in advance. The relevant portion is as follows: "For although Alan Rickman's emotionally constricted businessman does consummate his affair with his nastily manipulative secretary, it does not mean all ends well." Maybe I'm missing something, but I fail to see how his having an affair could even possibly lead to anything good.

What?! No mention of earlobes?! AR's are squarish and that is so like a "trademark". I have no idea its significance, but people, men, women, and even children have been adorning their earlobes with earrings forever. The ears are erectile flesh, so give your loved one the pleasure of a heart-felt, caressing "ear masssage"!
are you listening? that's love, too!

Alan rarely makes "sad eyebrows expression" in movies. You know, where the eyebrows are lifted only in the middle over the nose, I've seen pics of him with this expression though. I believe it's a necessary part of an actor's facial expressions. Very interesting. He seems to use it mostly when he's talking to women. Goodness, we're becoming very observant down to the last detail, well, that's part of being an artist.

The filtrum is the groove between your upper lip and nose!! Most of us Brits know that because there was a weird BT advert a couple of years ago where people stood up in an enormous heaven-like stadium and asked questions and a little girl stood and asked what is the groove called? Someone got up and said "That is your filtrum"!! The ad was on every night so filtrum has kind of entered into the pyscheLOL!! Then I noticed AR's filtrum (and obviously the writer of that article has too!!)Jennifer, you can still obtain AR's unabridged recording of The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy. It is well worth listening too, as it makes Hardy much easier to understand!! You can borrow it from libraries in the UK and other countries I think if you can't afford to buy it.

I paid particular attention to his "caressing" the chair scene! YIKES!!! Has AR done any other "period movies", other than S&S, Mesmer and Rasputin? Talking of features, I forgot to mention the Filtrum!!
There is an interesting article in the Guardian written by 5 writers asked to discuss body parts!! It's along piece but worth a look and Mr.R's filtrum gets a mention...Filtrum: Tobias Hill
Londoner Tobias Hill is an award-winning poet and novelist. His third novel, The Cryptographer, was published this year.
Years ago my journalist father wrote a radio piece about the snug dip between nose and lip. The programme began by posing a question: what is it that lies under everyone's nose, on everyone's lips? The answer was the filtrum. My father's interest in it was more than professional: had he been one for pin-ups he'd certainly have had a poster of Felicity Kendall (preferably in her dungaree phase) with her exceedingly fine filtrum. A generation later, my own wife has a similar relationship with Arsene Wenger, though on him, as on many men, the effect of the feature is less gentle, more carnivorous. Claire Danes and Angelina Jolie and Drew Barrymore lead a newer beautifully-filtrummed generation, accompanied on-screen by equally well-endowed actors - Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman.

The front page article in last Saturday's Telegraph Arts bit was all about LA, no pix or mensh of AR however. It was a shortened version of Richard Curtis's intro to the forthcoming book and provided an insight into the how, why and wherefore ogf the film. It doesn't appear to be on the web yet, still seem to be showing the articles from the week before, will keep an eye out and let you know the page link asap. Thank you all for your kind comments about the Bowness photos, when you get so much news and ideas from this site, it's nice to be able to give something back. Hope to hear from a Fish Needing Help soon, have to say it's a good pic of AR, although Fish is a little out of focus. Even my camera knows where its priorities lie! And yes, his eyes are light brown with a hint of green, no blue eye recessive gene spoils our hero!

If AR was the sort to have flings, they would have all come out of the woodwork after HP. There are lots of decent, down to earth actors who are faitful to their loves. I can think of Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson and I know there are others who have avoided much negitive publicity and heartache with this choice. Our man is the cream of the crop in so many ways.

Rima taught Economics at Kingston University, not Kings College. :) She retired from the University in July, 2002.Besides her elected position on the local council as representive for the St. Charles Ward (Kensington/Chelsea area of London), she sits on various boards, mainly schools/non-profit organizations.
As far as I know, Rima is the only woman AR has publicly acknowledged to have had a personal relationship with. They met in 1965 at Chelsea Art School, where they both were students. (Which leads me to ask: How did Rima jump from art to economics? LOL)AT ANY RATE, if AR has had affairs with other women outside of his lenghty association with Rima, that information has not been leaked into the public domain.

I do not believe Rima is a 'lawyer.' Barristers, aren't they, in the UK? Whatever they are called, she was a lecturer at Kings College in economics. And a councillor for Chelsea (which is not a counselor).

There are no children in their relationship. Perhaps they see their relationship as a choice - didn't need a legal tether - Rima is a lawyer. I never truly believed that an actual marriage was necessary among childless couples who felt secure in their relationship. I'm O.K. with it, Rima is not a child.

He doesn't like to be trapped? shies away from commitment? He says he doesn't like do the same thing over and over and thus he left graphic art. He does distinctly different characters and refuses to be boxed into a single category. He resisted the "star image" because that's putting him into a category, and he says journalists are often interested in summing things up in short descriptions. He's said that to him, two people stuck together in one place (like in Closet Land) would be awful. He's been in many different theaters and the movies he's in present whole worlds, like politics, space, theater, criminal worlds, period films, etc. Who knows exactly where he lives - so he seems not to have commited to a single home. He's lived with different women, and he resists the trap of being to well-known. He says he likes to travel and see new places. I'd say AR is a real adventurer, and just doesn't want to settle down in one place, physically or mentally. That's a whirlwind life, cherishing what is new. He seems to really enjoy his freedom. What is truly behind his unmarried state, not being married to Rima? Only he knows, but if he told us, he would probably feel pressure to explain himself, another trap.

Yes, "Love Actually" rated "R" for 'sexuality, nudity and language.' You have to recall, in the US flying body parts is viewed as suitable for children, love is not.

Off topic - troy08 - and others bothered by all the pop-ups. I strongly recommend using Zone Alarm, which I found out about on a BBC World program . The personal use basic version is a freebie and the only pop-ups I now get are those of sites I am visiting. Plus Zone Alarm tracks all the 'pings' that I get from entities trying to send pop-ups. And blocks them, of course. Several a minute, you would be amazed. A great firewall. Google it and you should find it.

Don't mean this to sound sort of nosy to the point of rudeness, but I really wonder why he has not married his long term partner. I wonder if it's because they have an open relationship, or because they just don't believe in marriage (conforming with society's rules etc). Because 31 years is a REALLY long time. Any thoughts?

At lunch time today, I saw a commercial for Love Actually. Did I see correctly that the film is rated R?I guess my question is-Why would a film that is billing itself as THE funny, breezy, romantic comedy of the holiday season need to carry an R rating.?
Wouldn't a movie with a PG13 rating appeal to more people and practically guarantee a hefty take at the box office? So what's in LA that warrants the R rating. I'm taking a wild guess here thats it's NOT AR in the buff????

I was excited as the LA trailer had "Coming in November" plastered over the screen. I was sad when I found out from the booking office that Melbourne has to wait like the rest of Oz for Boxing Day (as Aussiegirl had said). The Mr. groaned when I said "Guess what we are doing Boxing Day dear". Untill I pointed out that he should not complain, he likes the romantic movies where as I tend to like the action movies.

Check your local sources! Having hunted hither and yon over the weekend seeking those elusive 'preview' showings of "Love Actually," I just got email from one of our local film gurus offering free passes for a showing this Wednesday, October 29th. Which is apparently the second local preview showing. So they are clearly willing to hand out freebies to get some advance word-of-mouth going on this film, not to mention that it is advertised about every 15 minutes on BBC America.

ACC - Yes CME was certainly low budget, many locations are very close together within London, ie the restaurant where Sinclair eats breakfast is opposite the ice rink where he chats with Richard. The *big house* in Marlow is subdivided into apartments in reality, hence the small kitchen I assume, although as the conservatory was actually a house in North London, it could be that the kitchen shots are same North London house.

Unbelievable: I've never seen so many mistake in only a few lines. How did you get to understand my story (maybe with a little bit of imagination LOL!)? Chandra: yes I'd loads of question to ask him postpone, however I thought about only a few one at the moment (completely tart I am). I was more thrilled to talk to Alan's interviewer (Paul). He's one of the presenter of the "Night Waves" on BBC 3 radio. He's doing a great job there and in Sheffield as well for theatre. However I'll tell the rest at another moment with less faults I hope !!!

In answer to Juliana's query: "Staging Youth Theatre: A Practical Guide," by Rex Doyle, with Foreword by Alan Rickman. Here is the brief foreword by Alan Rickman. (Otherwise, the book offers no additional mention or any photos of him.):
"I first met and worked with Rex Doyle at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, when he directed me in his own play about the life of the great dancer Nijinsky.
Everything that makes Rex such a fine director and teacher was evident in that production. Meticulous research and great leaps of imagination. But perhaps most importantly it was a production that was guided at all times by Rex's openness and generosity towards the actors and his boundless gift for encouragement. And it was fun. The rehearsal room was by definition a market place for common sense, fleeting instincts, and mad ideas.
This excellent book is fed by exactly the same balance of the creative and the practical. Whether you need information on fund-raising, auditioning, running a rehearsal or making a prop, it is all here.
Youth Theatre continues to prove its worth not only in training young actors, directors and technicians, but also in developing the confidence and self-esteem of young people in a much wider sense. Dedicated youth leaders will benefit hugely from the guidance and inspiration which this book offers in abundance. Alan Rickman"

Hello everyone, I'm new at this and only just discovered the site thanks to my friend A Fish Needing Help. I would just like to pose a question: Can you describe for me in no more than 10 words, what the attraction is to Alan Rickman. The reason I'm asking is that I am intrigued to know if you guys are as potty about Alan as A Fish Needing Help?!!!! I accompanied A Fish Needing Help to Bowness and had a wonderful day as well as being very inspired by AR, who was a very down to earth gentleman and quite sexy too! I am currently going through his films as directed by AFNH. I can see how easily you can become smitten!!

Nathalie - great account - oh to have heard that voice speaking French! So many posts to get through, haven't been able to log on since Wednesday, seems like everyone had a good time. Noticed a mistake in my post though (thanks, Juliet!) His audition was for Richard II not III. I remembered that it was the opposite to the one in That Book, but as I don't have That Book, I can't cross-reference - lol!

Hi Mortiana, hi Nathalie, yes, the exam went well, thanks (if I'd missed the Bowness show to study and still done badly at the exam, I would be very pi..., er, annoyed with myself.) What terrible timing, I missed Harold Pinter in London (same day as the evil exam) too. Anyway... No more exams. EVER! Yeeeeeeeees! *hysterical laughter* My evenings are mine again, aaall mine! *opens bottle of wine* - Thanks so much for your account. Et excuse moi, mais quelle chance de cocue!;)) (a classic -rude- French joke about too-lucky people and their marital fortunes, you don't want to know...). Ah, Beaudelaire... school memories coming back. "Ses ailes de géant"? Let me get this right for everybody: Alan got high on a bag of toffees, tried to walk through a wall but he couldn't because he kept tripping on his own giant bird's wings? Mmmh... *doctor's cough*... I see... now Miss Nathalie, how many glasses of wines had you had yourself before the lucky encounter? ;) Just teasing, that was a... very vivid picture (and a terrible translation on my part). I can just see him. On another subject, I was so engrossed in the new job and the exam revisions, I never noticed Love Actually creeping on us. It's out soon, yepeee. There were pages of the film supplement of the Daily Torygraph devoted to it on Saturday, photos of Curtis, Firth, Neeson, Grant, McCutcheon, Thompson... Nighy... everybody. Well, nearly everybody. Mmph. Will you still be in England when it comes out? By the way, to the Bill Nighy fans here, I was looking up Corin Redgrave filmography yesterday to see if there was something getholdofable I hadn't seen yet and found that he (and Nighy) will be in a new movie soon, still in production. OK, I forget the title. Something about love.
Magda, agreed about the link html instructions on the 'add' page. I never add links because it takes my PC 30 minutes to change pages when I want to check...

Pam, "John Gissing" definitely made it out of the cutting room. It is a finished product that was shown at numerous film festivals, including Toronto's last year. But, as was said, alas, no distributor. Since it is a film pre-9/11, which views 'business' as the battleground of a generation (which it no longer is), I doubt that it ever will. I do believe that "Londinium," the previous film from the Binder brothers (which starred Colin Firth) did finally see a few showings on a US cable channel.

Very enlightening articles Magda, thank you. I do hope that this brilliant director, Richard Curtis, hasn’t shot himself in the foot by bringing too many political statements into a perfect romantic British comedy. He has been blessed with a dream team of talent and hopefully has kept his focus pure. I love his previous work, but don’t give a toss about his personal views on politics while I am watching his film-no matter which way he swings.

Another review up at the Rotten Tomatoes Review Page for Love Actually. Here is the relevant (to us) section of the latest review (from something called The Film Hobbit):"For instance Grant's Prime Minister character spends a lot of time off the subject, doling out anti-American political fodder that seems to have been included more because the Director wanted to slip in a political statement rather than having anything to do with the film itself. Maybe that time could have been used to wrap up a few unaddressed plot points? Most threads are tied up in a suitably satisfying fashion, but some, such as the status of Rickman and Thompson's marriage are simply left hanging. Good though it may be, in some ways, I get the sense that Love Actually wishes it was P.T. Anderson's much better Magnolia, set as it is on bringing so many disparate stories together, right down to doing so with unifying musical cues. In the end, despite Curtis' absolutely heroic efforts, Love never seems to have the necessary deftness to reach that high a plateau."
Suzanne: a suggestion. Why not take that part of the HTML Guide that describes how to do a link and copy it to the ADD page? Not the whole guide, but it would be nice to have the link info right there on the page where you're posting.

CME is one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've ever seen. Who could like either of those losers, in bed or out? (Funniest line: "And just think, when we were kids we didn't get along.") The scene where they return to the party after their wrestling match and all heads turn as they try to look like nothing's wrong...priceless. The only redeeming feature is AR's performance. And you pick up the info that you can add paprika to tuna salad and it tastes quite good.Anyway, Newsweek review of LA up:Newsweek review. It's not that good, frankly. Here's the AR/ET portion that answers the burning question about whether his character commits adultery or not: "The P.M.’s sister (Emma Thompson) is grappling with the wandering eye of her husband (Alan Rickman), whose saucy secretary (Heike Makatsch) is doing her best to seduce him. This triangle doesn’t really resolve itself, it just peters out."
So we can watch happily knowing that he only takes his pants off in the right bedroom.

I liked CME, but did notice that it was definitely a low budget movie. Saskia Reeve's outfits were not flattering or well fitting, including the shoes LOL, and one could plainly see the microphones. Although I admire the chap that played Richard, I saw way more of him than I wanted and way less of Rickman than I wanted! Also, did anyone wonder why the kitchen was so small in such a huge house? Houses of that era had huge kitchens and butler's pantries. I have always wondered if it was one of the cast's kitchen, or the director. The VHS was even worse, and despite all of that, I have also ordered the DVD. No need for "three guesses" on why, is there...

Just got the DVD of CME in the mail and saw about half of it so far. I didn't realize that you got to see ALL of Clive Owen. But, who in the heck did the sound for this thing? The mixing is horrible. Half of the scenes that Alan's in have classical music playing so loud that you can't hear most of his conversation. Then, in some scenes, like where the brother is invited to lunch, the microphones were placed so poorly on the set that the sound is just terrible. Married to a broadcaster. Know a lot about sound. Had to grumble. Sorry.

Lupin tells Neville that when the boggart comes out, to picture snape in his grandmas dress and vulture hat so that snape looks stupid and funny rather than menacing. Could the DoC please put paragraphs into the two large blocks of text that have been posted within the last week so that they're easier to read? It's really very hard otherwise. Also, here's the relevant portion of the Daily Record article, such as it is:
PIRATES of the Caribbean beauty Keira Knightley is Britain's sexiest female film star. The 19-year-old won more fans in Bend It like Beckham before starring with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in the swashbuckling Disney hit. But dishy Bloom lost out as Britain's sexiest film star to Bridget Jones hero Colin Firth, who won female hearts as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
More mature sex symbols Alan Rickman, Sean Connery and Sean Bean also made the top five in the poll of 4500 people by internet provider Tiscali.....

Nathalie, that is truly an evening to remember - sounds overwhelming. Did you have a question for him in conversation? or one you would have liked to ask in retrospect? I have a question or two if I ever meet him - that is why I ask you. Great encounter, thank you so much for sharing!
I'm going to read it again.....

More marure sexsymbol Alan rickman has made the top 5 in the poll of internet provider Tiscali, he became number 3 after Orlando bloom and before Sean Connery, Colin Firth was the number 1.That's what i call good news, isn't it?

Hi there, It's been a long time since but what a terrific time I had those months in London - a must be done experience-
(Au fait, Nice to hear about you GML, I really hope that your exams was a success).
Well, I've decided to take a little time to share with you some experience you would surely like to hear. I'd nearly forget about Alan Rickman when suddenly someone has reminded me about him and the fact that he would be in Bowness (many thanks to this person). Well, that's wonderful because I wanted so much to visit the Lake District, Northern England and Scotland. I needed a little vacation before going back to Paris so I've decided that it would be a wonderful occasion to meet AR and in the meanwhile visiting the North of England so that's what I've done!!! So I've been to Bowness-on-Windermere for the Festival and then headed off to Scotland... I know that you are more impatient to hear the story of our encounter with Alan.
(Mille excuse for my english but Alan's french is not better...Oups I didn't mean it Alan, I like your voice when you speak French, I really do, I promised...)
So let's start...
Friday morning in London, my journey has begun with an espresso (or more) and heading back to my office as usual. I was both exciting and impatient to finish my work and going back home. I've never seen the morning pass so quickly before and soon arrived the lunchtime that I've taken at the office (you know French meal always on the need for such a journey!). Afterwards, I went back home, my luggage ready for departure and so began my WE off, headed out of the flat to take the Picadilly line to Heathrow. On arrive, nearly missed the closure of the gate (Ouf). Taken my fly to Manchester and arrived on scheduled time. At the train station somebody has told me that there was a direct train to Windermere (well, that's great) but what a liar!!!! (Roger has told me never to trust the National Railway: I never had a better advice). However, after having waited for nearly I don't remember how many hours I finally got a train to Preston from Manchester Picadilly and then (after a while) to Oxenholmes. There, on the platform I've met two wonderful women (I'll call her L and H) who were also going to the Festival. So after having waited a couple of minutes (hours?) we have decided to take a taxi to Bowness. The landscape was really nice even in the darkness and soon we had arrived in Bowness. Me and H ( I'd rather not telling her name unless telling otherwise by her) went directly to the Old Laundry to take our tickets and see if we were on time for the evening performance and yes we were ( L was too tired to come with us), super I'd always wanted to see the BELCEA quartet, marvellous violonist, violoncellist playing Mozart, Bartok and Beethoven with an electrifying impulse.
The women at the Old Laundry told us that we even had enough time to go to our hotel and head back to the theatre. so I went to my hotel and headed back to the theatre but too late, the performance has already began but a very nice woman at the box office allowed me to listen to them from behind the stairs, what a funny place to listen to such a beautiful live music but I had enjoy it whatsoever. After a few minutes and my head full of Mozart, I was allowed to get into the studio (or theatre but more like a studio because it's very tiny inside). At the interlude, I met H again and we had a nice conversation. We decided to return to our place for the second part and what I really didn't expect came: Monsieur Alan Rickman en personne!! I was so shocked I didn't want to stop to say bonjour or whatsoever... I ask H if I really had seen him even if knew it perfectly so she turn back her head and Alan and another man(Roger Glossop) were waving at us, she waved back and we went back to the studio. Alan and Roger also took a seat at the highest row. I tried to concentrate on the musician and succeed well enough because I thought it was weird to have Alan in the same room when didn't expected, however I must recognize that I was really aware of his physical presence and from time to time I couldn't help myself looking at him, It was a curious feeling because my head simply wouldn’t admit that he could be here while I was expecting to see him the next day. After the performance, I went to the "ladies" and at my return H presented me to Roger Glossop, the director of the festival. It was nice meeting him; really, I daresay I admire the work he has done for the people who leave here and his devotion for the theatre.
- Roger if ever you read this I really wanted to tell you that I had been really pleased to meet you and Paul as well and I wish you all the best for your Festival, I really mean it. So if one day you and your family come to Paris I would be very pleased to escort you or simply give a very warm welcoming as you did for me and the same goes for Paul -
(If ever you have the chance to go Bowness go and see the Old Laundry and the fantastic world of Beatrix Potter especially during its festival. There are always nice plays to see and a lot of other cultural attraction. This year I think it was the new version of Antigone by Blake Morrison which is worth seeing and I have missed it, what a shame!)
Well back to the story--- So I speak to Roger and I don't how and when suddenly came Alan again but this time straight to us, no need to say that I was completly shocked and that has resulted to my being completely tart (well, that what I was thinking at the time). Roger presented me to Alan and Alan replied in French "enchanté de vous connaître" in a quite funny way but nice (I wonder how did he knew I was French, maybe my accent). But I didn't remember having said anything, maybe a quite shy "nice to meet you, Alan" but full of this frenchy pride; I wouldn't dare recognize that I was totally thrilled to meet him and I don't exactly remember when he did it but he gave us caramel toffee that I couldn't refused!! I’ve noticed that he seemed to like sweet quite much as he was eating nearly all the bag. At the time it didn't make me feel anything special to be next to him, I was just thinking that he was a man like everybody else, quite charming but just a man and I behaved myself like I always did in the presence of a man, always pleased to make new acquaintance. I believe now that I couldn't realised that it was the same Alan Rickman I've seen many times in the "In Demand" clip and a lot of other nice movies. I don't really know what he was thinking at the time but he was just here wandering around us trying to look at the various posters surrounding us and moving in a quite funny way that made me wondered if he wasn't a little bit drunk or if it was really his way of moving, you know like Baudelaire's "Albatros":
L'acteur est "...semblable au prince des nuées
Qui hante la tempête et se rit de l'archer ;
Exilé sur le sol au milieu des huées,
Ses ailes de géant l'empêchent de marcher."
I asked him if he‘d be there all day the day after, he mustn’t have really understood what I asked because he answered in with famous tone that he wouldn’t be here all day because he would mostly be at the Royalty Cinema to present the movies and that he would only be there for the interview. However, maybe I didn’t say what I meant because I simply wanted to know if he would be with us all-day or only during the interview so I laugh and he smirked at me. I hope he didn’t think I was laughing at him because I was only laughing about the misunderstanding between us and maybe also a little bit about the way he was moving his back (drunk or not?). Then I told “see you tomorrow then” and I return to H and roger to tell them goodbye because I suddenly wanted to go back to the hotel to swim at the hotel swimming pool ( I know I’m quite strange sometimes even for me) so that what I did even if I had that they might be quite surprise to see me going so quickly. In fact, I wanted to leave him alone because it was too weird for me to be so suddenly in his presence that I couldn’t stand it no more…
I think that it will be enough for today. Maybe I‘ll tell you the rest of the story another time. I hope you have enjoy it as much as I did, maybe more…
Sheers to you all,
Nathalie

Hi everybody! Super pics! Could you please tell me those who have met him if his eyes are hazel-blue or hazel-green. It looks to me like they are not 100% golden brown, are they rimmed in green (like I always thought when I watched his movies). Thank you.

From the San Jose Mercury News: ``Love Actually'' -- It would not be saying nearly enough about this touching romantic comedy from Richard Curtis (``Four Weddings and a Funeral,'' ``Bridget Jones' Diary'') to call it a feel-good movie. ``Love Actually'' -- shown here as a work-in-progress -- is actually the feel-fantastic film of the fall. And even when it's trying too hard to be all of that, it remains so luminously bathed in the light touch of Curtis' writing, and the beguiling performances of Hugh Grant, Firth, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman, it is rarely less than wonderful.

And yes......those hands!! Can't wait for Love Actually. I just watched Closetland for the first time. I was nervous at first because I know the content is very heavy. AR was incredible. Hi Joan, I wasn't exactly being sympathetic in my Elliott Marston post. My focus was on smothering Alan with kisses if I recall correctly ;D
Actually I found Marston to be a most detestable character. Out of the roles I've seen Alan in (true I haven't seen many) Marston infuriated me the most. His contempt for others and I don't mean when he simply shot two men to death without blinking (that would be too obvious) but when Marston spat his cigar end onto the floor for his servant to pick up, I wanted to smack him across the back of his head and make him pick it up. Something for me to meditate on. Who do you think would win the prize for most detestable?

It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to be able to search the web for all those tidbits about AR and I thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for sharing. I appreciate it so much. I wouldn't be such a big fan if it weren't for you guys. I am sure that the best part of being an AR fan is simply the wonderful group of people that admire him. The wonderful qualities we all admire in AR are there present in his fans also. I wonder if he realises what a bunch of lovely people represent him? Sorry for gushing on so but its truly how I feel. As for the Cleaning Woman, it's hard for me to make out all the words and my Italian isn't that good anyway, but I think I hear her saying first that she's sorry, she didn't know the room was occupied--then I can't make out the words--and at the end I think she's saying she can clean up, if Natalie wants. As for the tea room, I think someone posted a while back where that was--some National Trust place, a bit out from central London I thought?

Ali-Pat, Would love to discuss CME, but unfortunately find myself at a loss for most of your questions myself! Spoiler space follows:

1-4 As an American, I'm ignorant as to the locations and the vocabulary, sorry.
5 I thought she was being a bit more reserved, as if she was a model lounging around for window dressing and was only supposed to be speaking very softly and carefully. (Perhaps this comes from Richard's derisive description of the party later). Or, conversely, she is closed in, not speaking of much because as soon as she opens her mouth, Sinclair jumps into either correct or agree with her and then goes off on one of his tangents?
6 I took it that she meant to grab the dress and trample it or tear it as a final symbol that it was all over
7 I'm having to go on memory, as I'm still waiting for the DVD to come, but my feeling (as someone who speaks Spanish rather than Italian) was that she was asking her not to come in and maid said something about 'your husband', meaning Richard, being asleep. I'll probably be corrected on this, or if no one else comes up with the answer I'll be sure to listen for it when I watch
8 Well, I guess I put this in the 'suspended reality' of the film experience. For the same reason that people have conversations and dialogues that go somewhere-it's required for the film as compared to how real life works. Either that, or the legendary 'English reserve' is more substantial than I thought (So sorry, noticed that you were bleeding all over the floor, but didn't think it was my place to intrude).
9 You know that's a very interesting question (hear Sinclair?) Hmm, maybe she has 200 pairs of the same shoes-maybe there was a scene relating the shoe fetish of Sinclair and/or Natalie that regretabbly ended up on the cutting room floor? ;-)

Hi,í've read the request of Mary from mcHenry if someone had a joke, i don't know if this was seriously ment, but i think we can use one: Alan Rickman is a busdriver who's driving a bunch of little old ladies through the country, suddenly one old lady comes forworth and ask Alan "busdriver , do you want some peanuts"'?,Alan says "well , yes , why not, i love peanuts", and he eats them , half an hour later another old ladie comes forworth and asks him if he would like some other peanuts. "yes ,he says and he also eats these peanuts, that goes on for a few hours an then Alan asks the old ladies : "don't you like your peanuts"? and an old ladie says : "actally not", Alan asks "but why do you buy them then ?" the old ladie says " well ,we only love the chocolat thats's around them,. LOL.LOL.LOL , think, think ,think.

God, i seriously don't know what to say, been following the hole ebay thing the hole day, and I've thought about something to say. First of all I do disrespect the people who chose to put the videotape, in on an action at ebay.. (don't know for sure, but I think Alan would do the same) I now it's not all fair for me to say becaiuse I was at the event, so I've seen it already, but again my judging is based on how I think that the people who have arranged it (and not least what Alan) must think... I feel it's kind of disrespecttful, but again as I can see we all have different oppinions about that (which is fine by me) Another thing is the price of the videotape, I personally thinks it's a person, that's for some reason have something to do with the event, either it's a person who has a connection to the teatre or to Alan Rickman... Well I don't want to think to much about it though, because there ain't really much we can do about it now, is there, so.....! I just think that the most important think is that it does not affect the relationsship between alan and his true and loyal fans...

I don't think there is anything "fishy" about making some (I'm not saying all) auctions private. Otherwise eBay wouldn't do it! Its purpose is to protect the bidder. Protect them from what, you ask? Well, from other bidders, for one thing. I know because I won a rare item on eBay recently and then received over 1 dozen emails from people wanting to know if I'd make them a copy! I mean I don't mind sharing with my friends but these were people I didn't even know! So I am now grateful to sellers of the rarer items who make the bidders identity private.

Money is precious. What people object to so strongly is greed. Money equals survival. Money equals choices. Even charities are asking for money rather than clothes, canned goods, etc. because these items need space; they would rather decide what is most important and buy it.
With the scary cost of medical care nowadays (even pets have whooping medical bills), money is so necessary. One can no longer say "money is the root of all evil", it's become that important and we really are dependant on it. So, I think we're upset about perceived greed.

If you're angry about the exploitive VCD auctions on ebay, go here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/index_popup.html?sell=item_allowed.html (bottom of page has a REPORT link) All reports are confidential and a much more proactive way of being heard rather than ranting here. Some people here obviously couldn't care one way or the other which is fine and dandy but what about the large portion of us who feel that this is an unethical use of ebay and more importantly, an unfair monopolization of AR's charity event? In the last day or two, I've seen *most* people on boards and groups very incensed. We aren't going to just go away - and therefore, my intention to post the link above is a way to redirect traffic from this board to an area where they can constructively vent without having to feel chastized for it. One other thing: If the person who started this auction at a low opening bid never intended for the auction to get that high, why not put a "BUY IT NOW" on it? It's that simple. And anyone who knows how to use the more advanced features like 'private auctions' surely must know about "buy it now." Are we all in denial here, this thing was a calculated attempt to personally profit (x number of times per copy) off a public event which clearly prohibited the filming of it.

Hi everyone. I have a question. A few months ago, I caught the last few minutes of a movie starring Jude Law titled *The Wisdom of Crocodiles* and I noticed Mr. Rickman's name listed in the credits. I watched the movie entirely the next time it came on, but there was no sight of him whatsoever. I'm wondering if anyone here knows why he was listed in the credits? Did Mr. Rickman perhaps help out behind the scenes somewhere? Any info given is greatly appreciated.

Good Heavens! Ladies! I must speak! All this looking up someone's IP address (as Chandra did), E-Bay selling history (though I know it to be public info), etc still reeks of a Witch Hunt! If you don't want to buy the blasted thing, vcd/tape/whatever, then don't! Whomever this person is, I believe, has suffered enough of a thrashing for ME to feel it all the way here in the states! Ouch! Now, please, can we move on and enjoy more stories of our favorite actor?

It defies logic, that's it, that's all. It just is. I watched Quigley Down Under yesterday and even tho' Elliott Marston is the most despicable of all his characters I've seen so far, Alan still does that thing he does, that thing that cannot be described with mere words, that thing that makes me want to hold him too close, gently touch the gray at his temples, softly, softly stroke his face, tenderly kiss his eyes, ears, throat and lay warm, wet kisses on his lips til we are filled with soothing joyous peace and our hearts soar and sparkle and shine on thru the galaxies forever and forever.

I did not mean to make light of the discussion of the illegal Old Laundry videotape by posting my questions about CME--I really am curious about all those things. As for that infamous illegal tape--I agree that the whole thing stinks. It was disrespectful to Alan and exploitive of his fan base. But I'm not sure what can be done to prevent such things, outside of searching everyone as they enter the theater. This I do not forsee happening. More likely, if it is perceived as a problem, Alan will simply stop making personal appearances. Somehow, I don't forsee this happening, either. At least I pray it does not.
But think of this. The person making the tape knew there would be a market for it on Ebay. The bidding probably wildly exceeded their expectations, but there is and always will be a market for this sort of thing. If every illegally made tape were removed from EBay, the auction inventory would probably drop by half. Still, I think the fact the the bidding got so out of hand says more about the buyers than about the seller. I apologize if I offend anyone by making this statement.
The fact is, the market for illegal souvenirs is driven by the behavior of the purchasers. The more we support the market for such things(and I include myself, having more than once foolishly bid too much money for something I really, really wanted), the more they will proliferate.

Here in the U.S., we have a syndicated column where people write in to ask questions about the ethics of their behavior. My thinking has always been that if you're writing, you have a little voice inside of you that has already told you that you are behaving in an unethical manner. The eBay lister in question must have that same voice, as he has noted "This is a private auction and your identity cannot be seen by other eBay users." Hmmmm...why would the buyer's and seller's identities need to be hidden if not for some wrong doing?

If I remember correctly, there was a very conspicuous sign at the entry to The Old Laundry Theatre that said photography was prohibited, along with an image of a camera with a red line through it. Nothing more specific like "no flash photography" or the like. To me, this means that those involved with the event were asking that it not be recorded. It would be difficult to justify filming the event just because the word "camcorder" was not included on the sign.

Here's a thought - was it actually ILLEGAL to tape the event or just a request that people didn't? Maybe the bidding has gone up so high because someone connected with the event might pay anything to secure the "evidence" to proceed with prosecution?
Just a thought

I am sorry some people feel we should lighten up or change the topic. I, for one, find it an interesting one. Many times people here get bad-mouthed for being frivolous or personal but here is a topic that is neither. I am not trying to "Purport to know what he would think on any given subject" I just purport to be giving my view which is that I would be disappointed if I gave my time and energies to something that I was keen on being underhandedly (is that a word?) filmed and then sold on. (BTW I don't hold with the idea of being embarrassed by making a big profit,if you put it on e-bay you want money, end of story.)The very fact that the auction is "private" seems to me to imply that the person knows that what they are doing is slightly unsavoury. As I said before, I have no idea who the person is and whether they even post here so I don't consider that I am "getting" at anybody. I am just interested in other people's views.

In November 2003 fashion magazine "W", there is an article about Colin Firth. I like this line in it when they were talking about "Love Actually" : ... cast members, who include fellow heartthrobs Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson and Alan Rickman...". I don't think the cost of the item is the issue being debated. I think what upsets people is that someone who claims to be a faithful fan and who likely smiled right into Alan's face at some point in the day knew what she or he was going to do with the footage, which was to make a profit. I doubt Alan would be pleased to learn that the fans he graciously spent time with in Bowness for a good and worthy cause have turned around and are now trying to capitalise on an event meant for the furtherment of stage and film.VCDs are cheaply and quickly made and can be produced in mass quantities. While it's shocking to see how much people will pay for something that will be had for two a penny next month, it's even more shocking to see how little fans respect Alan Rickman himself. It's things like this that will probably keep him from wanting to do things for his fans in the future.

Okay, I'm game for a new topic. How about Close My Eyes? My copy of the CD arrived on Monday and I am happy with the improved clarity of sound and picture (or am I just imagining that?). It was also interesting to see the trailer, but goodness it looks washed out! Still, after the dozens of times I have watched the video, I am left with lingering questions. First for the answerable ones:
(CLOSE MY EYES SPOILERS IN GREAT NUMBER BELOW)
1. What is usually found in the "tomatoes" Richard is examining at the restaurant? Seems to me that ketchup would be the logical thing, but when he opens it there is no liquid at all, only that tooth. (ewwwwww). And do people usually slip odd things into them, as Richard asserts?
2. One of the jobs Natalie circles in the Classified Ads is for a "Kord Minder". What is that?
3. What is the location of the outdoors restaurant where Sinclair and Richard have lunch? There are lots of terraces in the background with trailing vegetation. Looks like the same location was used in filming The Last of the Blonde Bombshells. (Or am I imagining that, too?)
4. What is the location of the tea room where Richard and Natalie have their big, teary arguement and where Sinclair has his "last" cucumber sandwich before leaving England?
And now for the questions that probably have no clear answers:
5. When Richard challenges Natalie on her new way of speaking and she answers, "I have always spoken like this," has she really changed the way she speaks? I do not notice any difference in accent or tone. I assume he means she sounds more refined, but I can't prove it. Anybody notice a difference?
6. When Natalie and Richard grapple in that deserted flat, why does she reach up and pull that dress off the hanger? Does this symbolize something or is she just being hysterical again?
7. What is the maid saying to Natalie? I believe she is speaking in Italian (the "ciao" at the end tipped me off), but can anyone translate what she says? Please?
8. At the end of the film, why do two adults beating on one another, lying in the middle of the road, lying at the side of the road, and limping back to the party all torn and bloody not arouse more than mild interest from observers? I mean, if I had been the person in the car zipping by right after Richard and Natalie narrowly avoid getting flattened by that truck (or even the truck driver) I would have stopped my vehicle to check them out.
9. And finally (this is the hardest question of all for me to reason out), why does Natalie have only one pair of shoes? I know this was a low budget film, but for Pete's sake--get that woman one other pair of shoes!

No, what I object to is the fact that the person who made this video is someone who spent a great deal of time and energy before and after the event to promote the fact that they would be attending. And somehow neglected, in all of their multi-page reports, to reveal that, oh gosh, guess what? I just happened to videotape it also! And instead of offering to share it with people, put it up for profit. Yes, I surely agree the person didn't think it would go this ridiculously high, but it still strikes me as greedy. The photographs, on the other hand, have come from people happy to share their photos with others or have put them out there for everyone's pleasure, not putting them up on E-bay to sell.

I completely agree with Claudia. Whomever this person is, he/she just happens to be (un?)lucky enough to be selling something that is clearly highly desired by many people. I'm sure there wouldn't be so many complaints regarding 'illegal photography' (which I doubt it was, probably more of a 'no flashbulbs' policy) if the seller were giving copies away, instead of selling them. Basically, the bidders have moved the item out of the reach of normal people, and that is upsetting to some people. I'm sure 500+ pounds (good LORD but some people have a lot of money to spend on this man!!) is far beyond whatever the person originally thought would be paid for this item. I think we all just need to calm down a bit. The buyer will likely make copies, somehow they will filter out to everyone else... that's how it seems to happen, anyway. (whew. going back to lurking...)

Its more the "we know who you are" message, that comes across as a threat, that I was referring to. Many people here sell things on E-bay. Unfortunately, when you sell something, you can't control what someone is willing to pay for it. It can get uncomfortable for the seller when the price goes so high as well.
It isn't worth speculating where the money will be going - it very well may be a charity. But do we ask this of any other Alan Rickman related stuff on Ebay? Magazines, photos, books. Sometimes the prices get up there, sometimes they sell for $5.

Just swinging by, and thought I'd weigh in. From the discussions I gather that someone is offering an illegally recorded video of the Old Laundry appearance on Ebay, and this is causing some justifiable anger? It may be that Ebay has rules against this sort of thing, and will shut down the auction if someone complains. Just a thought.

Please can we refrain from personal attacks on anyone. The issue of the video CD - it was put on e-bay for $4.95 or there abouts. Certainly in the spirit of sharing with fans at cost. Ebay being a good site for selling things and an easy way for getting to the attention of a large group of fans, all over the world, and a managed way to organise paying for an item (I have sold things there myself). Its people who bid silly money for items not worth that, that put these things out of the reach of fans who would like to see them - and we would all like to see them.
Please can we drop the subject, and be nice to all. Thank you.

Sort of fallen back into lurking mode, but recently got my hands on a copy of "Sprinting from the Graveyard" by Goran Simic and have a question. The book mentions a Radio 3 broadcast produced by Fiona McLean called "The Sorrow of Sarajevo" which featured readings by Julia Watson and Alan Rickman. I've heard AR's readings of some of the poems on the internet but it was at an event only a few years ago which featured many other celebrity readers. Was anyone lucky enough to hear the Radio 3 broadcast? The book was published in 1997. I wonder if Radio 3 still has the tape?

Thank you very much for all the reports on the film screenings/interview, lucky ones. I didn't realize he was going to give the event that much time, I thought he was just going to introduce a film or two. I might have made the effort to travel otherwise... (and failed my exam tomorrow, just as well I didn't know). I have seen him many times on stage in London, but he usually had some sort of script on these occasions, it would have been nice to see him interacting with the audience. I hope he does that in London some time. (Or even better, at my local pub, I'll send the address to his agent). Favourite jeans allowed too (gee, I thought it was royalties who were threatened with excommunication if they appeared twice in the same gear-I'm glad he doesn't think he's Princess Diana :D). Great to hear he is considering doing some stage work again in the not too distant future, best news I've heard for a while. The French movie on hold because of lack of funds for axis-of-evil - based projects, eh? Umph;). Do it on less, Alan! What? Shooting in Versailles and low-budget don't fit in the same sentence? OK, find the money somewhere else, then. Sell your body!... Nah, I know: rewrite the script to appeal to the producers: make the evil Versailles gardener slowly poison all the plants and send Arnie in GI gear to rescue Louis XIV's beautiful illegitimate daughter from his claws and plant hamburger trees all around the castle to feed the grateful French mobs. How about that? (I've got this sinking feeling he probably would get loads of cash offers for anything that daft...;)
Anyway, thanks again for the reports and photos and don't feel shy about adding stuff when it comes back to you!

I, too am more than a bit disappointed that is appears that an attendee to Saturday's event has decided to earn an obscene profit on it. I was given to understand that photographs were forbidden, but I think that was flashbulbs, so the filming of it is not exactly illegal when you have one of those nice machines that can take high quality images in low light. It looks like from the pics on ebay that is the case. It would disappoint me even more if it was indeed one of the members of this board, but I would not be surprised. We may think the websites and such that are devoted to Alan are legion, but mention his name about and people will more than likely say, "Alan who? Oh yeah, the guy who played Snape." I may want to correct them and recite a long list of his accomplishments, but resist, knowing I might get that raised eyebrow look of astonishment. We are a fairly narrow lot, I have met many people in this little online world. So chances are it could very well be a person who has posted here. Sigh. From the previous poster's comment we know Alan would not be surprised, but just perhaps a bit disappointed. Wouldn't it be a wonderful idea if the seller turned the profits over to the orginisation involved in the fund raiser? I should think any and all would be pleased with such an outcome.

Right, where do I start - it was a very strange but wonderful end to a very surreal week. Left home at 8.45am, took a wrong turn and ended up a bit off course. Got to Bowness on Windermere with 5 minutes to go. We were just sitting down in our seats in The Royalty Cinema as Mr Rickman came down the centre aisle towards the stage to a round of applause. He sat centre stage with Paul Allen and answered a few questions regarding Galaxy Quest. One comment I remember was that GQ had some wonderful props "which I collected" then he laughed. Evidently he's well known on set for appropriating props! "Of course, I auction them off for charity!" came the explanation. We all laughed at that. Questions then switched to those from the audience, one question being why does Alexander Dane still wear his headpiece at home, to which Mr Rickman replied that it was relevant to the character and that the Thermians would have been confused had he not been wearing it. He seemed to have been proud to have been part of GQ, even though he remarked about Sci-fi in general "I loathe it"!
At the end of this mini interview he moved his own chair off stage, remarking dryly that he'd had a lot of practice as a stage hand. He then left the audience to enjoy the film. My friend, Glenda, hadn't seen this film before and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was good to see it on the big screen. Unfortunately in Northumberland, most of the cinemas have long since closed down and you usually have to travel into Tyneside to see anything. The Royalty is a wonderful, cosy old cinema which was built in 1926 and still retains many original features - and it has really comfortable seats! If you're ever in the area go visit it. On the way out after the screening, I noticed a small, dark haired woman standing in the foyer with a few people and I wondered if it was Rima. Later I found that it had been Rima and that it was Rickfan37 talking to her.
After lunch we trooped back into the cinema for the screening of The Winter Guest. We were told to sit anywhere we liked, so once I'd handed my ticket over I took off towards the front, determined to find a good seat for this one as I love this film. Glenda remarked that she had never seen me move so fast! Once settled in our seats I started to look around and I noticed that more people had arrived for this screening. I was trying to work out if anyone was there from the GB and we had the idea to write GUEST BOOK on a notepad and hold it above my head. It turned out that I was sitting next to Vanessa, Sofie was sitting in the seat in front, Rickfan37 was sitting across the aisle, Gissing's Girl and Totally Smitten were across the aisle at the front and then a voice came from behind where I was sitting, but further back, and it was Juliet. At least it broke the ice - what the locals/non-GB'ers thought is anyone's guess!
Again Mr Rickman came down the centre aisle to another round of applause and the question/answer session began for TWG. I can't remember much about what was being said as I had started to take pictures at that point and unfortunately I was shaking so much that the photos came out a little blurred. One remark I remember is that whenever he sees the film he often wishes he could go back and change or recut it. Ever the perfectionist. The interview finished (there was no audience participation in this one as they were running a little late) and again he left us to watch the film. Sitting so close to the big screen, I became very aware just how moving this film is, often poignant, sometimes funny, I noticed things I hadn't seen before and you really get wrapped up in the characters. After watching GQ, the contrast was striking.
After TWG, we walked further down the street to The Old Laundry Theatre, where the main interview would take place. I suddenly realised that the tickets weren't in my bag and Glenda and I had to pelt back to the Royalty to find them. The staff must have done a sweep of the cinema in the meantime and as we walked through the door, we were told that our tickets for the talk had already been sent down to The Old Laundry for us. Thankfully we were able to pick them up at the door. Once inside we had a cup of coffee and then it was announced that we should make our way through into the auditorium. There was a "Strictly No Photographs" sign up, so I knew I couldn't take any snaps there. We were shown to our seats, which were in the rows behind where Paul and Alan would be sitting. There were even more people there for this event and I noticed how many men were in the audience. Once more he came out to yet another round of applause and he settled down to the questions being asked. He seemed remarkably relaxed (possibly because he knew there were no journalists there!) Here are some of the subjects that I can remember:
Early life: remembers first going onstage at the age of seven. Vividly remembers posting his application to RADA "I remember the post box on Berwick Street in Soho and knew from that point on that my life was going to change". We were treated to a description of his audition (Richard III) and the fashion he was wearing at the time "I had hair down to here!" indicating a point past his shoulders.
Time in Rep: "I was in panto," "You weren't in panto, were you?" Paul asked. Alan nodded. At that same time someone in the audience shouted out "Oh yes he was!" and we all fell about laughing, including Alan. He remembered having to close a show early as one child got very upset and was crying too much - shades of Snape!
Les Liaisons Dangereuses: He said that acting required an awful lot of stamina. "I was onstage for three hours every night with LLD. After two and a half hours I was expected to have a sword fight with someone who had been in the dressing room for all that time." He said it was draining both physically and mentally and that playing someone like Valmont has a negative effect.
Die Hard: "Bruce had to pump up for every scene. I would walk past his gym equipment (pause for dramatic effect) and keep walking!"
Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves: Paul asked Alan how much influence he and his "certain friends" had exerted over the script " for example "Cancel Christmas". Alan replied "Everyone thinks it's "Cancel Christmas". It's "Call off Christmas". That line was in there originally, but in the middle of the sentence. It was moved to the end of the sentence for better effect". He also said that he believed that there was a newer version now on release with the cut scenes added.
The Winter Guest: He stressed how computer graphics (CGI) had been so useful in the making of the film. "You are looking at a seagull, but it's completely computer generated".
Current Theatre: Alan said that he had recently seen a production of Cymbeline by the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford which was the best production he had seen in years. He had had a long stint in Private Lives, but was now ready to look at going back on stage again. He had also finished work on the current Harry Potter film PoA.
At that point it was decided that questions would be taken from the audience and Paul and he decided to swap seats. Unfortunately all I could see now was the back of his head, but at least I could still hear THAT VOICE. If he ever decides to switch careers again and become a hypnotist I'm sure he would be just as successful at that! Anyway, here are some of the questions I remember:
"How do you cope with the prima donnas in the business?": He stated that he really hadn't come across much of that kind of behaviour and that a lot of it was media generated. He thought we were living in a society fascinated with the likes of Big Brother and celebrity and seemed to think that the media fed that obsession. "Now you've got Keira Knightley, one of my co-stars in Love Actually, and she's getting all that kind of attention. She's only 18".
"Who is your favourite character that you've played?": We didn't really get a definitive answer to this one. He said that every character has tied in with it memories that are specific to that time in his life - people he's met or worked with, going out for meals etc. He found it difficult to choose one.
"Who would you like to work with?": Alan mentioned that he would love to work with Pedro Almodovar, director of Talk To Her.
"Would you direct again?": He said that there was a script that had now been finished that he had been working on for the past 3-4 years. It was about Louis 14th of France and the creation of the gardens at Versailles (it's also a love story). They were looking for someone to finance it but because of the Iraq war America wasn't keen to fund anything to do with France.
"What advice would you give a young person starting out in the business?": To this he replied "I would say that it would be difficult, especially if we are talking about yourself, because you're a woman." He added that he felt there weren't enough opportunities, places at drama school, jobs in the business in general for women. You could genuinely feel his sense of injustice at this situation.
At this point I decided to ask a question and so did a girl behind me (many thanks to those of you out front who kept yelling "Behind you!" to him!). When my turn came I was aware of how much he had given to us as an audience and tried to articulate something along those lines. As he turned to look at me (he looks at you directly in the eyes) my brain turned to mush and my voice shook but I managed to get something out - "I know that this kind of situation is something of a trial for you - a kind of lion's den - but I have to say that it is very much appreciated that you have done it". I heard comments of "Hear, hear" around me and from the Man himself a quiet "Thank you". I tried to compose myself and asked:
"I understand that you wrote the lyrics to the theme of The Winter Guest and wondered how you got the Cocteau Twins involved": To this he replied that Michael Kamen had written most of the music to the film and "he put up with me writing some lyrics. I always wanted a Scottish singer and Annie Lennox wasn't available (he grinned). Liz Fraser had never done any solo work outside the Cocteau Twins." He said that he was very happy when she agreed to do it. I said that I thought that it was beautiful and very haunting. "Yes, it is beautiful." he agreed.
All too soon the session was over and it was announced that after a short break, Mr Rickman would be signing in the foyer for anyone who wanted an autograph. Alan thanked all of us for supporting the event. We filed out of the auditorium and after a quick dash to the loo and a glass of wine to bolster nerves, Sofie and I joined the end of the orderly queue for the autographs. Glenda decided to wait in the foyer so that she could take photos when it was our turn. Eventually our turn came. I walked forward, looked into those wonderful amber eyes, shook his hand (beautifully soft hands but with a firm, warm grip) and asked if it would be alright if he could sign three things. He nodded. First he signed my When Love Speaks CD (sigh), then he signed a personalised photo for Glenda. Lastly he signed one for me. I jokingly said that next stage production he's involved in, could he please bring it to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle. He laughed and said "Actually, talking about the Theatre Royal, do go and see the production of Cymbeline, it's wonderful." "I realised it was the one from Stratford and said "That's the one with Emma (Fielding) in it , isn't it?" He nodded "Yes, go and see it" I thanked him and shook his hand again. It was then Sofie's turn to have a signing and I took some pictures of her with him (hope they come out OK!) and that was the end of the queue. Just before we left the theatre I leant over and asked if I could have another question answered. He nodded again and I said "Has the Boggart in the Wardrobe scene been shot?" At first he was confused, then he realised what I meant and he smiled and said that yes, it had. At that I did a victory clench and quietly went "YES!" At that he laughed. Another scene stealer in the bag I think! I thanked him again and shook his hand for a THIRD time and said goodbye. We could not stay for S&S as Glenda had to get back home and Sofie needed a B&B as she had missed her train, (thank goodness you got back OK). Once a B&B had been sorted out, we set off on the road home.
Sorry this post is so long but I wanted to get every memory out of it that I could, I still can't believe it happened. I swear I existed in an alternate reality that day! He is such a kind, generous, thoughtful man and has such a lot of time for his fans and those around him, he gives so much. All the success he has he thoroughly deserves. He wonders why he's adored - it's no surprise to me! I doubt if anyone will get any real sense out of me for the rest of the year!

There was a very humorous piece written about "Stalking Alan Rickman" and it was totally fictional, but the author stated a disclaimer at the bottom of the piece, clearly stating that the work was a product of the imagination. I have no problem with that sort of thing, although I would prefer the FOF "news articles" be clearly labeled as fictitious also, in case there might be some confusion. As to the "Laundry" issue, I have nothing further to say. If anyone has any question about what I objected to, they will find the answer in my posting. I am, as always, grateful to Suzanne for providing this venue for us to appreciate Alan Rickman

I agree with "A Rather Perturbed Fan" about the e-bay sale of recordings of The Old Laundry events. I was not fortunate enough to be able to get to the event and would love to see a recording of it however I understand from a friend who wasthere (and from other reports here) that photography was not allowed at the interview. Now whether this was specifically a wish of ARs or of the organisers I do not know but it was obviously stated and the person who recorded the video obviously chose to ignore this request. If I was one of the organisers I would take a dim view of this flagrant breaching of the rule and if I was AR I would also be concerned at the sanity of people (anonymous bidders, I note) who are bidding over £500 at this very moment.Unlike A Rather Perturbed Fan I don't know who is the seller but I sincerely hope it is not one of the kind people here who have shared their stories of the event with us.

Hey! The Yam-Cam story was MINE - not Totally Smitten's. And you'll note that I "followed the rules" and posted it on FOF so you can't say there was any confusion as to whether it was an "actual" news item or not.

If you would read what I wrote, maybe you wouldn't be confused. The "Old Laundry" event was not a "bogus news article" and if you don't know about the "being banned" situation, or the bogus "news articles" then I suggest you read the guestbook archives or use the search engine. The subject has come up numerous times, usually bemoaning the fact that the "banned" person cannot relate their "Old Laundry" experiences, despite repeated and numerous announcements that the ban had been lifted, and despite this person having access to the FOF pages and bemoaning their fate on them. Either tell your news, and we will all appreciate it, or don't, but I object to the manipulation of the people who imply that if it werent' for Suzanne banning this person, we would all hear a wonderful account of this person and her husband chatting and laughing with Alan Rickman. If you wonder how he feels about false stories being printed, I suggest that you ask him.

I have a feeling Mr. Rickman has a wonderful, A+ sense of humor. I'm sure he takes his work very seriously, but not himself. I don't think he would be as upset about the funny stories that were printed here as some of the posters were. JMHO!

Mary, ACC is talking about several stories written by totally smitten and/or his wife, Gissings Girl. He/she made them up to look like real news and posted them here in the AR guestbook. I thought a couple were kind of funny but they confused some people and I agree this guestbook is not the venue for that sort of thing. Even I thought one of them was true (and I ain't saying which one!).

All right, I have quite enjoyed all the accounts of the day, both here and in other venues. But I have to say I am quite perturbed to see someone hawking videos of the event over E-bay. Anyone who counts herself (or himself) a true fan would be more than happy to share this with fellow fans, who I am sure would be glad to pay them for both the material and time involved to make the copies and allow them a comfortable profit.
But this, unfortunately, reminds me of an instance during "Private Lives" run in New York where AR refused to sign a stack of collected playbills and photos, noting facetiously "I smell E-Bay!"
You know who you are and, rest assured, others know who you are as well.

OK, obviously I'm missing something here. I've read the GB about the Laundry event and so I ask: what made up stories? All I have read are uniformly appreciative accounts by fans who say how kind and nice Alan and Rima were to everyone as well as a bit of news about what Alan said during his talks about the films. What is wrong with that? I don't see any made up stories here.

Perhaps I'm lost here. What stories are being made up about AR and the Laundry Event. All I've read in this Guest Book are stories of appreciative fans who say how kind and nice he was at the event and a few of the details of what he told fans. How is that making up stories? If people don't wish to hear such details, don't log into this guest book.

I don't want to hear anyone's account of the "Laundry" event bad enough to beg them to tell me. I also think that if Mr. Rickman knew the people who were making up bogus news stories about him, he would not have given them a warm reception. He feels strongly about such things, and would no doubt, no doubt, support Suzanne in the measures that she was forced to take after repeated violations. It is a free country, so do what you will, but don't expect my pity when you reap the result of your discourtesy to Suzanne and Mr. Rickman Suzanne, delete this if you must. Some people would try the patience of a saint, and I am not a bit saintly! I also do not intend to start world war three, so I will not be elaborating on a point that I have tried to make clearly the first go.

I think that Mr. Rickman can afford as many pairs of pants as he wants. I find it endearing that he doesn't worry about it. I also think that he may still be a bit innocent about the power of the internet and doesn't realize that people notice that he is wearing the same pair of pants at different venues, or that his private public outings are as well known as they are...

Yes, Lurker, those are the jeans, you'd think he could afford more than one pair, LOL! Remembered some more from the talk. RADA: said he clearly remembered posting his application in the letter box in Beresford? Street, felt it was a life-changing event, (if he can still recall the road, it must have been) wanted to stand out for his audition so wore an orange patterned top and VERY wide flares "this was the 70's" and had shoulder length hair at the time, the interviewer said he recited from Richard III as his audition piece and was nearly 26, this info is in THAT book, AR corrected him saying he was 24, and it was the "crown" speech from Richard II. Die Hard: the wardrobe dept has a load of guerilla outfits for him to try, "but none of them were me", AR couldn't see the point of dressing like a terrorist when he had a bunch of them surrounding him and he was supposed to be the brains, so the suit was his idea, Bruce Willis felt the need "to pump up" after every scene, he had a gym on the side of the set for the purpose, AR would walk past looking at it and shake his head. Egos: not too many actors have big egos, the stuff you read in newspapers is either reduced or made up, he mentioned Keira Knightley was really under the spotlight which was so unfair as she is only 18, and he said "Martine (McCutcheon) has suffered too", in his opinion journalists have far bigger egos, the worst were TV journalists, even war correspondants would have "combat" makeup applied when giving reports from the field to make it look like they had been involved in something.

I've been lurking here for ages and have loved reading the posts about the recent film festival. I have one question though - was this event filmed?
I'm asking because there are 2 VCD's (I understand that these are CDs which play video) listed on eBay. Item numbers 3356510722 and 3356514291. I was just wondering if anybody knows any more about them? Are they worth buying?
Thanks

Wow, wow, WOW! How fantastic an experience it sounds like it was in Bowness. I'm so impressed with the accounts that have been posted so far, we all know we like detail here!! I still want to know a bit more about what he said in response to some of the questions in the 1 hour Q&A session. Love the double-meaning Kevin Costner quote, though!!
Hope the GB accepts my post this time, it ate the last one I tried to do a few days ago!!

Many thanks to everybody who gave and will give an report here of the event. I'm so far away in south Germany and there was no possiblity to go to the Lake District. I am so happy to hear what was going on there and to get some pictures and ideas of this event. You are really nice people who share their happiness so freely with all the others. My mind is still in a whirl from the weekend, I'm still trying to get everything into some semblance of order. Sofie - thank goodness you got home OK - we were very worried and I certainly wouldn't have wanted you left on you own like that overnight, I couldn't have lived with myself. Will try your email address. You can contact me via email at mindactive1@btopenworld.com. Vanessa, did you take any more pics and how did they turn out? Juliet, would love to see your pics sometime too! I still can't believe it all happened. Rickfan37 - I thought that was Rima standing in the lobby as we came out of Galaxy Quest, but I wasn't sure at the time. I remember seeing you talking to her. Have now downloaded my pics from the camera and I'm sending copies to Suzanne, she can pick the best out of them. Some of those in the Royalty are a bit blurred as I was shaking so much! There are a couple in the Old Laundry where he and I were deep in conversation, yet I can't for the life of me remember what we were talking about! All I can see are those beautiful, amazing eyes. I've made notes of the questions on the GB and will try to answer as best I can. I'm hoping to post in full on Wednesday.

Thank you Juliet, YES! The details now. That was a wonderful recap. We are a greedy bunch I know, but this is very interesting. I am guessing that CGI is some sort of computer-generated scenery or something. Is that correct?

Finally making the attempt to marshall my thoughts! Saturday was WONDERFULWONDERFUL! Ok, get a grip, appearance 1st, Rickfan has told the important details, I can only add I thought his top was perhaps french navy and seemed to have a slight v neck rather than a round neck, dark socks, gold coloured zip on THAT jacket, square faced watch with a black? strap, patch/false seam on left knee. Hard to describe his build, I would guess he is 6ft, probably not more, he is in great shape, not paunchy or anything, but neither is he scrawny like some over-aerobicked guys are, he's got a big frame (bone-wise) and looks solid but slim, does this make sense?! I arrived for the Winter Guest bit, this Paul Allen guy asking questions, AR told us that it was interesting having the mother the dominent one in the film, because in real life it is the other way round, PA: Are you saying Emma Thompson is assertive? AR: Just a bit! Laughter. Lots of cameras going off, a bit like the Somme at times! The main Q&A session in the theatre, it was "in the round", fortunately I was facing him, strictly no photos allowed. here are the bits I can remember, in no particular order: RHPOT: Kevin Costner was "nothing more than supportive and good to work with", a bit of a pause, then laughter as we all realised EXACTLY the meaning behind his words. CGI: Can be useful, used it in WG to achieve the frozen sea/snow on roads look, main thing is you shouldn't notice it, too many films are all CGI and nothing else. HP: obviously not an afficianado, said was pleased not to have to sit through another quidditch match for a bit, explained how they are all seated as though watching the match, with a big board in front of them but behind the camera with numbers on in different positions, so the director shouts No17 and they all look to where 17 is on the board, then No5 or whatever, and they all look there, so it looks like they are all following the "ball or whatever" and the thick end of 300 people all chorused "the golden snitch","yeah, that's right" more laughter. Current projects: explained that being in PL for a year, 6 months in UK, 6 months in NY, felt he needed some time off from the theatre, so had spent a year doing film, and now felt ready to get going again, had been involved with a script/screenplay about Louis XIV for the last 3/4 years, but unlike WG this was big budget and would need US money, but the Americans wouldn't fund anything to do with France at the moment because of Iraq. At the end, it was announced he would have a short break and then sign autographs, someone said "Oh, like Alexander Dane? NEXT!" Laughter yet again. We all queued, he was so nice to everyone, I'm afraid to say I nearly lost it when it was my turn, I passed him the photo, he looked up expectantly, I finally remembered to tell him my name so he could write it, while he was doing this, I asked him when we would see him on the stage again, he said it took time to set things up, but hoped it wouldn't be too long, then he looked up and I found myself looking into his eyes, an amazing colour, tawny caramel. I stammered my thanks and tottered away, hoping I had come over as shy rather than moronic, I am a mature intelligent woman, I'm pushing 50 for Heavens sake, an MBA, I need to PULL MYSELF TOGETHER! Can't, shan't, won't. Don't remember driving home, but woke up in my own bed yesterday morning, so must have somehow! Managed to take about 24 pics, finishing the film off on Wed at my youger son's birthday, will get them to you a.s.a.p. after that. If I remember anything else, will let you know. Really fun meeting all the other guestbookers, Fish Needing Help got us together by holding up a sign saying "Guest Book" in the cinema before WG talk/showing, I think it is Vanessa I owe £2.50 to, e-mail me your address, please. I didn't see Rima at all, so don't know if she was around for the rest of the day.

Rickfan, thank you so much for telling us about your meeting with AR. However, I can't help but wonder what exactly he said about The Winter Guest, working with CGI, LLD, acting as a child, his favorite character, working with prima donnas, different directors he has worked with, working on Die Hard and Robin Hood: Prince of Theives, his hopes and dreams, how he chooses work, etc. I know this is asking a lot, and perhaps you don't remember everything, but if you or someone else could give the answers to these tantalizing questions I would be eternally greatful! Of course, even if you can't I am still thankful for the information already provided. :)

We went into the Royalty cinema at around 10:30 and were surprised to find the stalls less than half full. Turning round in my seat I could see the balcony, and I noticed a familiar profile standing talking up there. It was Alan Rickman, and he stayed there with Rima and the organisers until the appointed time. He wore a very dark brown distressed leather bomber jacket, dark shirt and blue jeans with a designer patch on one knee. His hair was a little shorter than in this last week’s Love, Actually promo shots. His shoes were casual and black. The lighting on the stage was poor and cast odd shadows on his face, giving the impression that he had two black eyes at times. He was introducing Galaxy Quest and spoke very amusingly about the plot and his dislike of sci-fi films, the wearing of the rubber head and how Sigourney Weaver took even longer in makeup than he did. After a while the interviewer allowed members of the audience to ask questions. One person asked why in the movie he is seen wearing the head at home, since the character loathes it so much. Apparently it is because at one point they were going to be abducted from their homes, and the Thermians would wonder why he looked different. He spoke for around 8 or 10 minutes, I think, and then thanked everyone for coming and supporting the Old Laundry, and what a good cause it was. Then he took his chair and left the stage, smiling widely and saying he was well-practised at being a stage hand. I watched him go and decided to follow. I did not know what opportunities would present themselves later in the day, but I knew that since so few people were in the cinema, that then was a good time to make my move. I spoke with him outside the cinema and he was all smiles, charming and gracious despite my all too obvious nervousness. He signed two of the items I had brought and his driver, the theatre owner, took our photograph. After the movie was over I spoke to Rima who was waiting in the foyer. She was very warm and approachable, and has a lovely deep, smoky voice. In the afternoon he spoke for around ten minutes about the making of Winter Guest, being a director, his interaction with the writer Sharman McDonald, and the mother and daughter team of Phyllida Law and Emma Thompson. It was fascinating and very revealing. Then he left again, but this time I did not follow! The film was good. Very atmospheric and beautifully acted. After that the audience went en masse down the hill to the Old Laundry theatre where there was coffee and cake to be had, and where we discovered that for £2.50 we could buy a rather nice publicity photo of Alan which he would sign after the talk. Needless to say, trade was brisk! The interview was completely fascinating and lasted an hour, as scheduled. For the first 22 minutes he was interviewed and unfortunately he had his back to where we were sitting. However, when the interviewer opened the floor Alan suggested that they swap seats to be fair to those of us who were behind him, and from then on we had a good view. He discussed so many different things that I have forgotten many of the topics! Questions covered subjects such as The Winter Guest, working with CGI in both that film and in the Harry Potter movies, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, acting as a child, his favourite character, working with prima donnas, different directors he had worked with, working on Die Hard and Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves, his hopes and dreams, how he chooses work, and many other things! He was relaxed, funny and informative and often made the audience erupt into laughter. He would not elaborate on anything the interviewer said about how Snape was not really either a villain or unfair, simply a complex man, limiting his comment to “I’m not telling you anything about Snape!” Damn! However, he did say later that sitting around on set eating sandwiches meant that his close-fitting costume always felt too tight! After the interview we formed a queue for the Signing, and engaged in conversation with Gissing’s Girl, her husband Totally Smitten and Juliet from the GB! We also met A Fish Needing Help, Vanessa and Nathalie earlier in the day. There were quite a few men there, many of whom were spouses, reluctant or otherwise, and also many who were obviously locals. I have to say, he does seem slightly more relaxed when talking to men one on one rather than women. Unsurprisingly! Alan was sitting at a desk signing photographs for over half an hour. He looked up and flashed a wonderful smile at every person for whom he signed, and each one was personalised. He greeted me and signed two photos for me, then I gave him a small Snape postcard and asked whether he would mind signing it for my daughters. I gave their names and he wrote them down, “from Alan Rickman (Snape) X X X”. I was so pleased, it was a lovely thing for him to do and the girls were giggly with excitement when they finally got to see it! The Sense and Sensibility talk was not as long as the others, surprisingly, and told us little that we did not know already. Sill, it was as entertaining as everything else had been that day. As the film started my friends and I left, and found that he was still in the foyer as we went out. He was as gracious and friendly as he had been all day and as I shook his hand again I was so aware of how tall he is and what an amazing magnetism he has. As he extended his hand towards me for that last time with that wonderful smile, his hair mussed and still wearing that distressed leather jacket, I nearly melted. What a perfect end to a perfect day. Unforgettable.

A Report on Ananova:Actor planning to pip pop stars at Christmas
A song which holds the record as the UK's longest chart-topper could be heading back to number one for Christmas.
A spoof version of Love Is All Around from new movie Love Actually is to be released the week before the festive chart is announced.
The track will compete with artists such as Sir Cliff Richard, Blue and retro rockers The Darkness for the coveted top spot. The Love Actually track, renamed Christmas Is All Around, is being sung by actor Bill Nighy.
He plays a washed-up musician, Billy Mac, who performs the track in the movie.
Love Is All Around was originally recorded by The Troggs, but found a new lease of life when Wet Wet Wet recorded it for the movie Four Weddings And A Funeral.
Bookmaker William Hill puts the track at 12-1 to top the charts on December 25.

By Grabthar's Hammer, what a day! I'm shattered, but I don't think I'll sleep tonight. Will be posting a review of the day (bar S&S as we had to leave early to get back home at a decent time) as soon as poss. Great to meet those I met today - stand up Vanessa, Juliet, Sofie (hope you got home OK) Rickfan37 and everyone else. So good to put names to faces and hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Good news - our Man looked great in black T-shirt, black leather jacket and jeans. Seemed quite relaxed considering the situation he was thrust into! Here's a taster - the Boggart in the Wardrobe scene HAS been shot - straight from his very own lips - and he laughed at the "YES!" victory clench I made. This man is so wonderfully down to earth, humourous and generous, he deserves to be treasured. I have pix and will send them to Suzanne ASAP.

This isn't really important but I just thought I'd say that I found a copy of the 'An Awfully Big Adventure' sdtk this afternoon in a second-hand cd store and just bought it out of force of habit. I seriously just saw it, picked it up, thought 'Oh, I know that. Alan Rickman. Yes.' then absent-mindedly purchased it and left the store. Didn't even really realise I had it till I got home and it was on the car seat next to me. So, if anyone was ever looking for a copy for some reason, it's it pretty good condition and I'll gladly send it you. The music from the credits is quite nice really.

Hi "Oh Dear", I ain't kidding! in certain lights they are kind of "squarish" and that is another AR characteristic that makes him such an interesting, expressive face. Quick, go look at "Stezi's Page" and click on Filmography,"An Awful Big Adventure", and see for yourself! Why did I notice? There was a ballerina who had attached earlobes and another ballerina wanted to look like her, so she had hers trimmed! It's true! Anyway, I love and respect his earlobes, there was certainly nothing negative to my remark, we like them, Alan! sush, silly me.

AR might want to say "what the heck are you talking about??? Square ear lobes???" and then: "Get a life."

In Mephisto, I recognized AR's large, squarish ear lobes on the man on our left. I've noticed that slight dimple-in-the-chin before. Lighting can do strange things. It's not one of his everyday expressions, I'm sure, so it's a puzzle at first.
The LLD photo: what's going on?!?! why is that actress laughing? (I'd laugh too, for joy, bashfulness, etc)*giggles*.If I was going to see Alan Rickman, I would ask him if there was anything he wanted to tell his fans. Is there anything he always wanted to say to us?

Okay--the consensus seems to be the guy on the left. What threw me off was the chin dimple--guess that's just a shadow? Anyway I'm glad to see a photo from this production as I don't think I have seen one before. I just started reading the novel this week, oddly enough...

Well, since you asked, Joan...hello! I think I might possibly be the only male lurker here. I wasn't actually planning on ever posting, but I figured you should know I was here.
Alan Rickman is a great actor and comes across to me a perfectly decent human being. I've been a fan for a while and I find this guestbook ripe with amusing and/or intelligent conversation and one of the best places to find out what he's up to, release dates of stuff etc.
And I have to say, if women are really HAVE to fancy someone (and believe me, guys don't think there is any justification for liking anyone besides THEM! rofl) at least you guys have decent taste. See you all later!

Aussiegirl - I'm in Canberra, I lurk here regularly but rarely post. Sorry, you missed CNNNN (and you're right about thursday nights). The newsbar (newsbar! that was the word I was looking for last night!) item was only 3 seconds of fun while it scrolled across the screen but it made me squeal with pleasure. I completely forgot for a second that I was watching a COMEDY programme and when I saw AR's name appear from the right I thought something had actually happened. I was like "What!? What? ACC wondered, jokingly I assume, whether "it was planned to be almost impossible for anyone that doesn't live in England to get to-ten days notice, limited tickets, no advertising-limited transportation...a one day event". I don't think so...it is simply that he is a trustee of the Old Laundry theatre company, along with such luminaries as Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Griff Rhys-Jones and Victoria Wood, and so is no doubt doing it as a favour. As for publicity, as the venue holds only 260 I imagine they were pretty confident of its selling out anyway and therefore saw no reason to publicise any more than they do any other year. ~RF~, sick with nervous anticipation, nearing the end of the longest week of her life...

Starting to get the butterflies in the stomach for Saturday now, planning wardrobe, like I have oodles of choice! Probably stick to jeans, top and jacket 'cos the Lake District in October is usually fairly bracing, and anyway I'm built for comfort rather than speed! I know the area fairly well, new visitors should be aware that Bowness-on-Windermere (where it is all happening) is not the same place as Windermere, the 2 villages are about 4 miles apart. Bowness has no train service, but Windermere does, so it will be a taxi job, if necessary. Bowness is right on the shore of Lake Windermere, and the autumn tree colours will make it very attractive, a suitable backdrop to our man! I have no idea where the Royalty Cinema or the Old Laundry Theartre are in relation to each other or the lakeside, but Bowness is pretty tiny, the streets are really twisty and hilly in parts. Car drivers like me will find parking a problem, probably best to park a bit outside and walk in. My ticket for the Winter Guest says 190 and for the talk I appear to be in Row 3-C6, don't know if that is good or bad, but may help me to catch up with Sofie, Rickfan37 or Fish if I knew where you were sitting, 'cos we really ought to organise who is bringing smelling salts, etc! I have my younger son's birthday party on Sunday, so won't be able to post till Monday, also any photos I take, what do I do to get them on this site, Suzanne, help please!!

My teen daughter works at the local cinema. For the whopping price of .50 cents, the workers can put in to buy the promo movie posters they recieve. They use the poster money to buy pizza.I saw they have the Love Actually poster displayed. "Quick", I told my daughter, "put in for the LA poster before anyone else claims it". Barbara the Aussie - Love Actually will be released in Australia (as far as my investigations have shown) on Boxing Day (Dec 26th). If you'll recall from previous years, this is a huge day in Australia at the cinema and when a lot of blockbuster new releases are released. Could be that we just want to sit in air-conditioned comfort on what is usually a stinking hot day! Anyway, Barbara - why don't you ask Santa for a Movie Voucher - that way you can use it on Boxing Day! If you want to be first to see it, it would probably pay you to pre-book your seat on the internet so that you can be assured of a seat as I know that day is usually packed out with movie-goers.

Julia--sorry I was too late to answer your question about Rope and I don't remember what AR said about Nashville except that I have a vague idea he liked it and would like to work with Altman one day. One thing I know about Rope is that there is more than one version and even more than one title,(it is sometimes called Rope's End). The Hitchcock film was based on Patrick Hamilton's play, but was rewritten in parts by Ben Hecht, among others. The character names are different in the film and events are switched around. As for how sexy Alan sounds in Italian, I have a inkling after hearing A Little Like Drowning (breaking into a sweat just thinking about it). Still, I look forward to the photo.

Here is some background on Rope, scroll down to the review of Hitchcock's film. Patrick Hamilton wrote the stage play, as Sue stated. Not sure if the radio version of Rope which AR recorded was adapted (would it seem so, based on a shorter length?)--I'd have to listen to the audiotape credits to check. Also, as a film, it appears that Rope was remade into a totally uncut version. Juliet, I think the male "nudity" in LA will belong largely to Rodrigo Santoro, who's cute for a youngster, and in good enough shape, as far as I can see. Please, all of you who go, do post reports from Film Laundry from those us who can't go.
That photo in which he's "unaware of the camera"--he just looks goofy! Not that it's a bad thing, mind you....I'm looking forward to Liam Neeson, whatever his hair is like (he needs a Phil job). Although, I watched Michael Collins again, and while Liam is good enough, AR lets every moment in the film just "come to him"--though I suppose that arguably that's part of Dev's character. And can I, since I haven't in a while, just point out the comparison of his h*nd dance around the chair in the meeting room, and the one in S&S, talking with Elinor Dashwood? ("Ooops". My obsession's showing...*rearranges self*)
Last thought: Watching Die Hard (thanks Ali-Pat) during insomnia last night--there's a line about Arnold S., the new *ahem* elected official in California. Huddersfield sounds pretty good to me!

Hubby & I were in Venice for my 40th birthday, & we decided to sit in St. Marks Square at a cafe, and enjoy the beautiful site of the Basilica etc, when a waiter came over to take our order. I virtually did a double take when I looked up and was faced with a double of our A.R! You have no idea how sexy A.R. sounds in Italian! I couldn't believe my luck, A.R.'s double in Venice on my birthday!, that makes 3 birthday's in a row I've had the pleasure of A.R.'s presence! o.k. the last one wasn't THE real Alan, but hey I'm not complaining! It looks like we're going to get a music video from Love Actually. It's called "The Trouble with Love," I believe, by Kelly Clarkson. The video might include scenes from the movie, etc., so keep your eyes open on those music video channels! :-)

Yes, Sue, I meant 'that one'! Do I sense horror in these question-marks of yours?;) Hey, that's what he looks like when the smile is genuine: hides his teeth. Old habit I guess. Saying that, haven't seen him for a long, long time now. *grumbles*. What's he up to? Oh, that's great news about Emma Thompson in HPIII. Trelawney? Very different from her usual characters. Can't wait to see that, I bet she'll be brilliant.

For movie fans, just in time for Christmas, with much love
New film by writer of Notting Hill is odds-on favourite to be the greatest British hit of all time
David Smith, arts and media correspondent
Sunday October 12, 2003
The Observer
It is the box-office banker to end them all. Ten love stories, a dozen A-list stars, a comic script by 'the British Spielberg' and the feel-good formula for Christmas - all in a single film.
It is called Love Actually and, more than a month before its release, has already been tipped to become the biggest British hit of all time.
The strength of the cast list has had the movie industry rubbing its eyes in disbelief. Established stars Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Martine McCutcheon, Bill Nighy, Liam Neeson, Billy Bob Thornton, Alan Rickman and Rowan Atkinson are combined with Britain's hottest young talent: Keira Knightley, Martin Freeman (best known as Tim in The Office), Andrew Lincoln of Teachers fame, Kris Marshall from My Family and rising stage actor Chiwetel Ejiofor.
But the key to the success of Love Actually , made for £23 million and predicted to gross more than £250m, could lie behind the camera. The film's screenwriter, Richard Curtis, who wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary and Bean, is also making his debut as a director.
The movie played to packed houses at private screenings in London last week and has won audience ovations in Los Angeles and Toronto. Bookmaker Ladbrokes is offering odds of 3-1 that it will become the highest-grossing British film ever. 'It's got all the right ingredients to smash every record,' said spokesman Warren Lush. 'You can't go wrong with Richard Curtis and a cast of this stature.'
The film weaves together 10 love stories that unfold in the run-up to Christmas and climax on Christmas Eve. The festive theme, with its potential for TV repeats, has earned comparisons with It's A Wonderful Life. Curtis's film is set in London, and is said to make the city seem as glamorous as Paris or New York. Grant plays a bachelor Prime Minister who falls in love with his Downing Street tea lady, played by McCutcheon, while Nighy is an ageing rocker with a surprise hit. There is also a pop soundtrack with distinct market potential.
Love Actually receives its premiere, in aid of Comic Relief, at the Odeon Leicester Square in London on 16 November, five days before its UK release. Adam Dawtrey, European editor of the industry journal Variety , said: 'It's going to be huge. It combines all the elements of Richard Curtis's work but with other things too. It is slightly less glossy and has more of an edge of realism. There is a little more nudity but the normal bucketfuls of swearing.
'It is Curtis's best film yet, a real advance for him, much more interesting than anything he's done before. It's more grown-up in a way and very funny and moving.
'The cumulative effect is of a comic and emotional juggernaut running over you, which the audience won't be able to resist. It does feel like a compendium of great British actors. This will be a must-see film.'
In Hollywood, too, Love Actually is the title on industry lips. Chris Petrikin, of the William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills, said: 'It's hard to bet against Richard Curtis, the type of stories he writes and the quality of the ensemble casts he puts together. For actors it's similar to what is was like to be in a Woody Allen film: a feather in your cap that brought you instant cachet.'
Curtis, 46, partner of the broadcaster Emma Freud, has written many of Britain's most popular comedies for TV and helped its cinema recapture the glory days of Ealing Studios. Four Weddings , made for £4m, took £150m worldwide, Notting Hill , made for £27m, took £230m, and Bridget Jones's Diary , made for £18m, took more than £100m. He is currently working on Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason .
Curtis recently explained his decision to direct: 'It was reaching a point where I'd stolen enough hints from other people. In particular, I got very involved in the edits. I now had strong opinions about where the camera should be, how the actors should act. I just think it was time I dared.'
Like Four Weddings and Notting Hill , the movie is made by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner's Working Title, produced by Duncan Kenworthy and stars Hugh Grant in a fairytale London. It is likely to face criticism for being formulaic, corny and overtly sentimental - it begins with a voice-over about 11 September, 2001, musing on the 'I love you' phone calls of those trapped inside the World Trade Centre after the terrorist attacks.
Kenworthy said last night: 'Of the three films I've done with Richard, this is in many ways his most personal. It's his philosophy of life. He's not embarrassed or ashamed to say: "Love actually is all around." Love motivates people in all walks of life in every way possible. Embarrassment is the biggest English emotion, but Richard is not like that and it comes through in his writing. Movies are all about what you're feeling.
'Richard writes about things he knows about. He was very proud for years that everything he wrote about could take place within 200 yards of where he lives. He doesn't think: "I'm going to con the public again with this." He writes it because it's funny, coming from experience. It's not calculated, although of course you're calculating will this work or won't it. In retrospect everything looks calculated if you want to be cynical about it.'
John Lloyd, who worked with Curtis when producing Not the Nine O'Clock News and Blackadder for the BBC, said: 'Richard seems to be the British Spielberg, he has the golden touch. Some people just know what's going to be an enormous hit. Richard is a great spreader of joy both as a person and in the stuff he makes. You can't complain about somebody who is trying to make life more pleasurable.'

The call sheets are really interesting! One of them seems to relate to Lupin's first class, and AR is involved too, looks like we ARE going to get him in full fig with dress and vulture hat, excellent! BTW, probably best not to attempt getting to Bowness by train on Saturday, there isn't a station, nearest is Windermere, 4 miles away. To get 70 miles would take me 2 taxi rides, 4 trains, nearly 3 hours and approx £50! What a joy our integrated public transport system is, NOT! Perhaps I should ask AR to take this up with that nice Mr Blair next time he sees him. Actually, I'll be lucky to speak one word that is coherent! And then I've got to drive home!

It sounds to me like the whole scenario was meant to be difficult, ergo, only giving people ten days notice of the event and not publicizing it and being surprised when people knew of it. There are people who can afford to fly to England for one or two days, but alas, I am not one of them, and I have too much of a conscience to subject the English to my driving on the "wrong" side of the road.

The LaKe DiStRiCt? Why not the Moon, Alan? All booked up already? Anti-British activities activists not allowed on its soil? Sigh. Take a southern UK car-less person's word for it, it would be easier and faster to fly from Australia... and I have an exam next week *groan!*. Re-Ports. Re-Ports! No shyness allowed. I got shit for some of my past reports and still gave them! Pleeee-ase. And could they go on the news page? *Bambi Eyes*. New job too busy to even dream of reading GB now.

--QUOTE --
Sue England, if anyone would know you would because you have found so many facts about AR. Are you absolutely sure you don't know which child is AR in the "Nativity Photo"? Is there a law that prohibits identifying children, or is the school where the photo was taken refusing to give out the information? Those children who are adults now must remember Alan, I would! How odd that his position in the picture was not shown in the "Unauthorised Biography". I don't understand why this has to be a mystery. BTW, where is the photo now? Thank you if you can shed some more light on this subject, and anyone else who can contribute I would surely appreciate it! Joan Pa USA - Tuesday, October 7th 2003 - 04:25:17 PM
--UnQUOTE -- I think it has more to do with the author's lack of true research skills than any law or plot.

Hey gang,
Remembered awhile back when we were discussing the "Tango with Ninagawa" documentary (behind-the-scenes of Tango at the End of Winter) and I promised you some looooong downloads for those who haven't seen it yet? Well, due to moving, computer worms, server trouble (and other problems I'm sure you don't want to hear about!), it took me forever, I know, but I finally got them finished and uploaded for your viewing & discussing pleasure (just download and double click file). :-) Had some difficulties making it at first, but finally got it to work after cutting it into three parts. And please excuse the low video quality, but my videotape isn't the clearest either. But if you keep it in the "restored" mode, it's not too bad. And no, I witnessed no ashtray throwing by the director. ;-) (Videograms are NOT to be linked from/uploaded to other websites or used in any other way aside from your own personal use without my permission by e-mail, thank you!)

Most people in Southwestern Ohio (and many beyond) have heard of Jungle Jim's, which is a massive grocery store just north of Cincinnati. It started as a simple produce stand and just grew, and grew, and grew to the point where it covers many acres and offers every sort of comestible known to humankind (Food beyond compare! Food beyond belief!). It is now so big that he is having a monorail installed to get you from the farthest parking lot to the store.
Jungle Jim is always tinkering with the store, and he is fond of huge mechanical talking displays (Elvis in produce, the singing Italian chef in the pasta aisle, etc), so you never know what you will find there from day to day. Kind of like Hogwarts. In fact, if this store had stairways, I am certain they would move all the time.
Anyway, I went there last week having not been there in over a year and had just come down the first aisle in the International Foods section when I was confronted with... Sherwood Forest! Jungle Jim has tripled the size of the International Foods section (which was already the size of an average A&P) and made a whole new section of British foods, topping the whole thing off with trees upon which are standing wax figures of Robin, Marian, and Little John. Not only that--they speak words of welcome as you enter. I got such a laugh out of shopping in Sherwood Forest it was difficult to move on!
I searched in vain for the Sheriff, however--I think I might have to make a suggestion to the ol' Jimster. I mean, can you just imagine it?
