Alan Rickman Guestbook
(October 2003)
Start reading at bottom of page.
Hi! I'm excited that I got a letter from Alan's assistant Ms. Parker yesterday. Some of you may remember that in June, a notice from Ms. Parker was put on the News& Update page on the Alan Rickman the Voice site. The notice basically said that Alan was regrettably unable to fulfil requests for autographs at that time due to his work schedule, he felt sorry and wanted us to understand the situation. I wrote to Ms. Parker a few days later saying that I shared the notice with other Japanese AR fans and we totally understood the situation, and we were touched by your thoughtfulness. I never expected to receive a reply. However, yesterday, I got a letter from her saying thank you to my letter posted in June and apologising the delay of her reply. It was so touching and I wanted to share this with many AR fans! ^.^

pixxaa, do I speak English?!?!? Are you teasing me? *giggles*. I speak "American". You are in Germany? Warum nicht sprecken sie Duetch? Are you wondering if I speak German? Nine! Schlus silly me! It is odd to understand, write, and talk English, but when someone from another English speaking country talks, their English confuses me! Even when AR speaks or is quoted I don't always understand. ^_~

Thanks for the explanation of w***er. I've been puzzled by this since Bridge J. Diary. LOL, No wonder CF challenges HG to street fight. English does have its many interesting varieties.
AR is nonetheless the most gorgeous Brit. And MANY thanks to you who attended Old Laundry. Pics and narratives are priceless.

#736, the November 7, 2003 issue of Entertainment Weekly (with Keanu on the cover) has a little bit about Love, Actually on pages 14-15 (not a review). Alan is in picture no. 5 of 9. Each character is described followed by a quote. Alan's section is as follows: "Actually, He's...Harry, Emma Thompson's husband who embarks on an affair with a coworker. Story Line From His Own Life That Would Have Fit the Movie. 'You mean, about adulterous relationships? Like I'd tell you!'" Ann Williams

Roman, you asked if I was a thespian and I am not.pixxaa, I look at your name and think "Pix Anne", like a pixie blowing fairy kisses. You and GML talking about that Brit slang word, "wanker"? The English language is so difficult; it's fun to play with, though. Man! you have to be so careful what you say! It must drive foreigners wild when they try to learn it!
Who cares if they criticize AR, all great leaders are hated! Besides, I'm aware of someone's faults, but still like them. ^_^

Oh, I've just seen the 'Love Actually' trailer on TV. Two glimpses of the spectacled one. Don't want to spoil it by describing the scenes, but it looked good. Mr R and Nighy certainly did. And thanks for the Radio Times info, Sue, I'll try my luck with my closest Warner cinema. Uh, once I've found out where it is. And nobody should worry about the Daily Mail stuff.... Really, the 'journalist' deserves a medal for this textbook piece of spin: take a friend's positive remark out of context (er, I don't think the original context is too hard to guess at;) and make it sound like an insult by sticking it into another context. Can't be attacked for misquoting as the quote itself is probably correct. I still can't see why the guy bothers myself, though, I mean, most of the people who buy the Daily Mail know who Arnie is but probably don't know who Alan Rickman is anyway. Driving friends against each other? They surely don't read the stuff either or have stopped caring about what it says years ago. There's only one explanation: it starts with a 'w' and ends with 'r', in six letters, and is all about personal gratification :)

I don't think the Daily Mail "writer" understood ET's comment at all. It sounds like a light hearted remark about AR's disinterest in cheating on his girlfriend rather than a put down. What a whiner this guy is! Everyone in London, please complain to the editor. All along, AR has been publicity shy and impatient with those who parade themselves. To our dismay, we have to look for him in articles and TV shows.(Gives us somethng to do) I doubt he will do any guest shots on any of the US talk shows, which is fine because I hate watching talk shows! Let the "pretty faces" do them.(His is the nicest face, I think.)

Nice Card Carole! There is a 4 page photo piece on Love Actually in the new Empire magazine. Here is a Selfridges Pic. The accompanying comment by Richard Curtis is as follows:
It's All Smiles Now...
"This photo was taken during a shoot in Selfridge's that lasted from 9pm until 5am the next morning. It must have been taken early. By 5am, no-one was smiling anymore."
There is also a review of the film which they give 3*.
FYI Selfridges is a large department store in Oxford Street, second only to Harrods in fame, reputation etc.

We all remember the "Wicked Whisperer" from his wicked post about a critic who wanted Mr. Rickman to sign "Severus Snape" on a picture of himself as the character. Mr. Rickman declined, and was tarred as rude because of it. I had him sign a Snape photo shortly thereafter for my granddaughter, Zelda, who at five had no difficulty distinguishing between an actor and his role. Got a "To Zelda, Love, Alan Rickman" for that. It appears to be a personal vendetta of WW's. I have trouble finding any "low opinion" in Emma's words. From "The View" interview, and all their promotional appearances (i.e., Venice) it looked like that all had a rousing good time on the set of "The Winter Guest." And her comments about him in the S&S Diaries are all kind.

I agree with you guys Wicked Whisperer sucks(sorry for using the "s" word). I'm never impress by journalists who are using made-up names to sign their trash. It shows how coward he is and his article must not be taken seriously. Nice picture! Thank you Juliet and Sue!

Mortianna, change that daydream to diagonal rows of tinfoil to get good blond streaks with no grow-out lines. Doesn't take long. A very good friend is a Beverly Hills private hairdresser to the stars, specialty men (although you'd think the ultrahetero Warren Beatty "Shampoo" character was based upon him, with happier ending,) and I watch his methods. I am a photographer here, Mistress of Illusion: there are reasons why rich/famous people's hair looks better.

mortianna - my new favourite phrase of that type is 'A quaffle short of a quidditch match' - use it! It should be introduced into the popular vernacular! Anyway, I may have been the only one of the Australians here who watched Rik Mayall's new series on the ABC last Thursday night - and obviously the UK folks will have seen it 500 light years ago - but was I right in thinking that was the same fellow playing Mayall's butler-type as played Nina's LIVING lover (as opposed to her LIVE-IN-BUT-DEAD lover) Richard (was that his name? I hope so) in 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'? It looked like him a little, but I forgot the check the credits. Anyone know or should I go web-hunting?

Let's see.... Judging from the acute dislike of Rickman, the judgemental tone, the poor word choice.... yes, I think the Wicked Whisperer must be no other than

Benedict Nightingale of the Times .
I don't think Nightingale has ever, in his history of writing, written a positive review of AR -- who he probably believes is inflicted with Sneering Mouth Disease (click my name to see R Cubed, and Sneering Mouth Disease).

Roman - to enter is not enough, I'm afraid. You have to be initiated:-) Go to the quick guide to html. you'll be enlightened. I know I was... I think this writer (what'shisname) is just an example for why AR doesn't like the press too much. The quote by ET is a perfectly funny and sincere way of one friend talking about the other - and she is perhaps talking about the real AR in contrast to his role in LA, perhaps. He seems to be - temptable in the film, but not in real life. There was a quote in the same vein by Beatie Edney(sp?) who worked with him on stage, I seem to recall.
mortianna
I wouldn't know about LA, as I can't watch any trailer, system at work is just too dumb, but said to be improved soon - there is hope for me:-) - Friday, October 31st 2003 - 02:41:30 AM
I don't know what this "Wicked Whisper" gentleman meant by quoting Emma Thompson (was that a real complaint or a tongue-in-cheek comment?), but I thought it was pretty decided Alan and Miss Thompson have been very good friends, for a long time, they've worked together several times (PoA's just the next on the list) and he's even directed her on a movie. Now, from what I've heard, they can both be very "difficult" people, s o to say, but they seem to admire each other's talent greatly (I'm still laughing about Alan's answer to that quetion "So, Emma Thompson is assertive?" "Just a bit!"). And now I'm giggling myself silly with Emma's quote. I can just imagine her raising her top and Alan turning to her with a raised eyebrow... "Well? What's your point?!" Oh, dear... Joan, are we colleagues, then? *waves "Hurrah for the thespians" flag* BTW, I seem to be the only one with this problem here. I can't type separate paragraphs in the guestbook. As I write, I'm having some five or six paragraphs, but I'm sure in the post the text'll show up as just one, solid, paragraph. Does the "Enter" key have a problem with me?

With the Daily Mail thing, i think it was a reference to how he approaches sexual situations, not about his acting, so in believe that was out of context. If the person who wrote the column is found lynched from a lamp-post tomorrow it was....er....nothing to do with me....

Alan wanted first for Snape: Here's the quote from Chris Columbus explaining why Roth was approached before Alan: ----------------------------
From: TOTAL FILM DECEMBER 2001
'...One thing that proved surprisingly possible was finding exactly the right cast. As Columbus puts it, the adult cast list "reads like a British greatest hits." With Richard Harris as Dumbledore, Maggie Smith as McGonagall, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, Ian Hart as Quirrell and Alan Rickman as Snape, you can see what he means. "It was embarrassing because everyone who was our first choice said 'yes'," Columbus continues. "There was a situation with Tim Roth, who we first approached for Snape (Roth opted to do Planet of the Apes instead), but ironically, the only resaon why we didn't go straight for Alan Rickman was because he was the one person who we thought would say 'no'. And it turned out he wanted to do it very much."...' -------------

Puzzling comment by Emma Thompson. Rickman is unavailable and probably finds it easier to overlook "overtures" rather than having to reject someone outright. Is ripping open her top Emma's idea of saying hello, or a party trick I wonder...she would be lucky if he didn't look down his nose at her and say "that's a bit inappropriate, don't you think"...

I've already discovered it thanks to the AR Fan Page Links (Stezi's Rickman Page), love those ladybugs! and I go there many times.Roman, Thank you for the helpful post about loesje's question if there's a movie where AR cries hard. I learned during a scene where crying was needed acting was too emotional for me; but forcing myself not to laugh when someone says something funny is impossible! In theater I belong in the audience - the stage is truly for people who want to work. Movies are worse! they want you there when?!?!? 5:00 AM! oh boy. 9_9

I've seen pictures of Alan, Rima, Emma and her mom (Phyllida?) together at functions. Seems to me that they all get along. This guy doesn't seem to like Allan. I'm wondering if he took Emma's words out of context just to be spiteful? That's assuming she even said those words of course.

LEE, the only other actor I could have ever seen bringing Snape to life was Jeremy Irons. Oh yes Kate, the name was Tim Roth that I saw. I typed in the wrong name. So it is true then. Wow, I wonder how different things would be if Tim Roth had accepted the part instead of Alan Rickman. I had never seen Alan before HP. I can’t imagine anyone but Alan playing him, but Tim Roth looks more like the Snape in the books I think. I wonder why Roth turned it down and why J.K. Rowling wanted Roth first if in fact she did.

Did anyone in the UK see this in the "Wicked Whispers" column: ... "And finally, I am delighted to learn that the charming Emma Thompson shares my low opinion of the over-rated Die Hard thespian Alan Rickman. Recalling their joint experience on Richard Curtis's forthcoming Love Actually, she says: 'I think you have to be really bloody good to get through to Alan. You would have to go up and lift your top up and say: "How about it?" Then he would still go: "How about what?"'"

Indeed, here, LA has been (discreetly) advertised as a Hugh Grant film - or, more precisely, as another film with Hugh Grant in the lead. Which is exactly the same thing. Frustrating, but not very surprising, seing as over here, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Colin Firth are much bigger than Alan. On top of it, a portuguese actress plays Colin Firth's love interest in the movie, so, Colin gets a little more exposure over here. By the way, a HP site has posted, a few days ago, a number of call sheets for PoA, and in one of them, Alan was mentioned. I was starting to wonder, with the ammount of Alanless call sheets I skimmed through, if he was even there at all. In it, he was listed alongside the child actors and David Thewlis, with a particularity: below the actor list, there was a little note saying something like "Alan Rickman must leave the studio at 1700 at the latest". Of ocurse, it could mean a bucketload of things, but the first one that came through my mind was "play rehearsal". You don't usually schedule doctor/etc. appointments for after 5 pm, and it was clearly a preplanned affair. It oculd have been an evening event he had to attend, but I somehow don't see Alan putting an evening out before his work - particularly seeing as he spends so little time in the HP set as it is, he probably would have saved the "bash", or whatever it was, for a day when he wasn't shooting...

Jennifer and others who have noticed how little AR is used in LA promos: apparently, my husband has informed me, the world in general thinks of this film as a Hugh Grant film! I got the last seat in the theater last night at Oak Tree (thank you so much to the kind organizer who gave me hers) and saw "Love Actually" in a preview showing. Let me say it was very little like I expected. Charming, funny, poignant, sad, provocative--the best of British comedy. Totally engrossing, in spite of the many stories. Emma Thompson -- amazing! Our man, very funny with Linney. It is lush. And Adam Godley has a small role. I look forward to going back when it opens.

I saw an ad last night on NBC for Love Actually when I was watching West Wing. There was no mention of AR. Most of the clips showed Hugh Grant. Maybe they think American women are more interested in Hugh than Alan?

To Jennifer, Calgary: re: music from TMD...I think you'll find that most if not all of the cello music is by J.S. Bach. (As Nina tells Mark during the hopping scene, she loves Bach.) The concert in Nina's living room is one of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. The final scene features the Andante from Bach's Keyboard Concerto #7 as Jamie wipes tears from his eyes and the closing credits appear (never fails to bring tears to my eyes too!). By the way, the screenplay's final direction reads "Jamie's face is awash with tears". Of course, this is not quite the case, but Anthony Minghella mentioned that he had a hard time getting Alan to show his emotions to that extent. P.S. I don't believe Alan ever shared an apartment with Juliet Stevenson, although he, Ruby Wax, and Juliet were all members of the Royal Shakespeare Company during his first (unhappy) stint there in the late 70s.

The 'where is it playing' site does include part of Canada - Ontario. Sorry, Jennifer. It says Love Actually opens both in Toronto and Cobourg on Nov. 7th. Hmm, we'll see. Any other Rickman fans in Cobourg?! On another recently discussed although off-topic subject - I was pretty sure I had added a note yesterday about using the free basic version of Zone Alarm to screen out most pop-ups. Somebody been doing some over zealous clean-up?? I am in no way connected to the company, but saw the program recommended on a techie programme on BBC World.

safari on the mac os can eliminate unwanted pop ups, but the people who run your web hosting site can easily embed those ads at the top of your web page, and there is nothing you can do about it, it's just programmers one-upmanship. Hope that helps even though it won't stop it.

Thanks to VH, who posted the Moviephone LA clip link, I've found a Nov. 1 screening of LA in my town. Other interested statesiders can check here to see if there's a show beginning Nov. 1, by using a zip code. Web experts: Safari had eliminated my site's pop-up ads with a browser setting, but Tripod has now sneakily added huge boxes of embedded ads (above a visible left arrow)--if anyone knows a browser setting on Safari or other means which would eliminate the new involuntary ads, I would be grateful if you shared. Thanks.

May I add a bit of my own to the "crying" question? I don't know in which context your acquaintance told you that, Joan, but from my experience, though sometimes actors do as you mentioned and don't really cry, simply pretend to, in order to avoid exaustion - in other occasions, they do cry (as in, "letting the tears fall down"), but there's a degree of separation - "they" are not crying, the "character" is. Sounds silly unless you're experiencing it, I suppose... I myself *grin* cried in my very first play. I was playing a widow (I had to take center stage and everyone could see my face clearly), and figured it'd be more realistic if there were real tears, so I cried. Did the same for the second play, though with different motivations - but the moment I stepped offstage, I came out of character - otherwise I do believe it'd be quite the ordeal. I was weary, as it was, already - but not more than if I'd played an intensely physical role. An actor - who's pretty famous over here - was on telly one day, commenting on how, in one of his plays, the lady who costarred with him had a very intense scene, in which her character - a mother - received the news of her son's death, or something to that effect. His own character was meant to be terribly upset, and it all went well, until one day he - says he doesn't know why - let himself go and fell in hysterics over the pain of the characters. The lady only noticed his crying was real and not an act when they were mid-scene already. He also commented he didn't do that again, and focused on the pain of the charactr, and not his own, to build his performance, otherwise, the strain would kill him. Hope I was helpful. :)

AR's crying question: Someone told me that in theater when you cry you are supposed to *look* like you are crying and *sound* like you are crying, but not to actually cry real tears so you don't get sick from exhaustion doing that show after show.

SPOILER :Jennifer, AABA is a movie he's made in 96or perhaps 95,it's about AR who's coming back to his old theatre company to play Peter Pan, there's also a 16 year old girl named Stella on the set, she's in love with the boss "meredith"played by Hugh grant, but he's gay ,and she let's herself in with P.L. o'Hara, played by Alan Rickman, they end up in bed , and that happens another time as well. PL is surching for his former love there, with herhe has a son so he believes, but can't find her, and after a whole lot of things that happen , he finally finds out that Stellla is his daughter instead of his son and he founds out that he had slept with his own daughter...

Hi Jennifer, AABA = An awfully big adventure Havent seen it myself but lovely pics here: http://www.alan-rickman.nl/adventure.htm And RoTN= expensive and worth it. His voice is just music. ***MAJOR Love Actually spoiler***
The November 4 issue of Time magazine has a 4-page spread on Love Actually. It consists mainly of a Q&A with Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and Richard Curtis. (My but Emma does like the F-word) There was no mention of AR in the Q&A but there was a four paragraph review of the movie. Don't read any further if you don't want to know about AR's story line in advance. The relevant portion is as follows: "For although Alan Rickman's emotionally constricted businessman does consummate his affair with his nastily manipulative secretary, it does not mean all ends well." Maybe I'm missing something, but I fail to see how his having an affair could even possibly lead to anything good.

What?! No mention of earlobes?! AR's are squarish and that is so like a "trademark". I have no idea its significance, but people, men, women, and even children have been adorning their earlobes with earrings forever. The ears are erectile flesh, so give your loved one the pleasure of a heart-felt, caressing "ear masssage"!
are you listening? that's love, too!

Alan rarely makes "sad eyebrows expression" in movies. You know, where the eyebrows are lifted only in the middle over the nose, I've seen pics of him with this expression though. I believe it's a necessary part of an actor's facial expressions. Very interesting. He seems to use it mostly when he's talking to women. Goodness, we're becoming very observant down to the last detail, well, that's part of being an artist.

The filtrum is the groove between your upper lip and nose!! Most of us Brits know that because there was a weird BT advert a couple of years ago where people stood up in an enormous heaven-like stadium and asked questions and a little girl stood and asked what is the groove called? Someone got up and said "That is your filtrum"!! The ad was on every night so filtrum has kind of entered into the pyscheLOL!! Then I noticed AR's filtrum (and obviously the writer of that article has too!!)Jennifer, you can still obtain AR's unabridged recording of The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy. It is well worth listening too, as it makes Hardy much easier to understand!! You can borrow it from libraries in the UK and other countries I think if you can't afford to buy it.

I paid particular attention to his "caressing" the chair scene! YIKES!!! Has AR done any other "period movies", other than S&S, Mesmer and Rasputin? Talking of features, I forgot to mention the Filtrum!!
There is an interesting article in the Guardian written by 5 writers asked to discuss body parts!! It's along piece but worth a look and Mr.R's filtrum gets a mention...Filtrum: Tobias Hill
Londoner Tobias Hill is an award-winning poet and novelist. His third novel, The Cryptographer, was published this year.
Years ago my journalist father wrote a radio piece about the snug dip between nose and lip. The programme began by posing a question: what is it that lies under everyone's nose, on everyone's lips? The answer was the filtrum. My father's interest in it was more than professional: had he been one for pin-ups he'd certainly have had a poster of Felicity Kendall (preferably in her dungaree phase) with her exceedingly fine filtrum. A generation later, my own wife has a similar relationship with Arsene Wenger, though on him, as on many men, the effect of the feature is less gentle, more carnivorous. Claire Danes and Angelina Jolie and Drew Barrymore lead a newer beautifully-filtrummed generation, accompanied on-screen by equally well-endowed actors - Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman.

The front page article in last Saturday's Telegraph Arts bit was all about LA, no pix or mensh of AR however. It was a shortened version of Richard Curtis's intro to the forthcoming book and provided an insight into the how, why and wherefore ogf the film. It doesn't appear to be on the web yet, still seem to be showing the articles from the week before, will keep an eye out and let you know the page link asap. Thank you all for your kind comments about the Bowness photos, when you get so much news and ideas from this site, it's nice to be able to give something back. Hope to hear from a Fish Needing Help soon, have to say it's a good pic of AR, although Fish is a little out of focus. Even my camera knows where its priorities lie! And yes, his eyes are light brown with a hint of green, no blue eye recessive gene spoils our hero!

If AR was the sort to have flings, they would have all come out of the woodwork after HP. There are lots of decent, down to earth actors who are faitful to their loves. I can think of Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson and I know there are others who have avoided much negitive publicity and heartache with this choice. Our man is the cream of the crop in so many ways.

Rima taught Economics at Kingston University, not Kings College. :) She retired from the University in July, 2002.Besides her elected position on the local council as representive for the St. Charles Ward (Kensington/Chelsea area of London), she sits on various boards, mainly schools/non-profit organizations.
As far as I know, Rima is the only woman AR has publicly acknowledged to have had a personal relationship with. They met in 1965 at Chelsea Art School, where they both were students. (Which leads me to ask: How did Rima jump from art to economics? LOL)AT ANY RATE, if AR has had affairs with other women outside of his lenghty association with Rima, that information has not been leaked into the public domain.

I do not believe Rima is a 'lawyer.' Barristers, aren't they, in the UK? Whatever they are called, she was a lecturer at Kings College in economics. And a councillor for Chelsea (which is not a counselor).

There are no children in their relationship. Perhaps they see their relationship as a choice - didn't need a legal tether - Rima is a lawyer. I never truly believed that an actual marriage was necessary among childless couples who felt secure in their relationship. I'm O.K. with it, Rima is not a child.

He doesn't like to be trapped? shies away from commitment? He says he doesn't like do the same thing over and over and thus he left graphic art. He does distinctly different characters and refuses to be boxed into a single category. He resisted the "star image" because that's putting him into a category, and he says journalists are often interested in summing things up in short descriptions. He's said that to him, two people stuck together in one place (like in Closet Land) would be awful. He's been in many different theaters and the movies he's in present whole worlds, like politics, space, theater, criminal worlds, period films, etc. Who knows exactly where he lives - so he seems not to have commited to a single home. He's lived with different women, and he resists the trap of being to well-known. He says he likes to travel and see new places. I'd say AR is a real adventurer, and just doesn't want to settle down in one place, physically or mentally. That's a whirlwind life, cherishing what is new. He seems to really enjoy his freedom. What is truly behind his unmarried state, not being married to Rima? Only he knows, but if he told us, he would probably feel pressure to explain himself, another trap.

Yes, "Love Actually" rated "R" for 'sexuality, nudity and language.' You have to recall, in the US flying body parts is viewed as suitable for children, love is not.

Off topic - troy08 - and others bothered by all the pop-ups. I strongly recommend using Zone Alarm, which I found out about on a BBC World program . The personal use basic version is a freebie and the only pop-ups I now get are those of sites I am visiting. Plus Zone Alarm tracks all the 'pings' that I get from entities trying to send pop-ups. And blocks them, of course. Several a minute, you would be amazed. A great firewall. Google it and you should find it.

Don't mean this to sound sort of nosy to the point of rudeness, but I really wonder why he has not married his long term partner. I wonder if it's because they have an open relationship, or because they just don't believe in marriage (conforming with society's rules etc). Because 31 years is a REALLY long time. Any thoughts?

At lunch time today, I saw a commercial for Love Actually. Did I see correctly that the film is rated R?I guess my question is-Why would a film that is billing itself as THE funny, breezy, romantic comedy of the holiday season need to carry an R rating.?
Wouldn't a movie with a PG13 rating appeal to more people and practically guarantee a hefty take at the box office? So what's in LA that warrants the R rating. I'm taking a wild guess here thats it's NOT AR in the buff????

I was excited as the LA trailer had "Coming in November" plastered over the screen. I was sad when I found out from the booking office that Melbourne has to wait like the rest of Oz for Boxing Day (as Aussiegirl had said). The Mr. groaned when I said "Guess what we are doing Boxing Day dear". Untill I pointed out that he should not complain, he likes the romantic movies where as I tend to like the action movies.

Check your local sources! Having hunted hither and yon over the weekend seeking those elusive 'preview' showings of "Love Actually," I just got email from one of our local film gurus offering free passes for a showing this Wednesday, October 29th. Which is apparently the second local preview showing. So they are clearly willing to hand out freebies to get some advance word-of-mouth going on this film, not to mention that it is advertised about every 15 minutes on BBC America.

ACC - Yes CME was certainly low budget, many locations are very close together within London, ie the restaurant where Sinclair eats breakfast is opposite the ice rink where he chats with Richard. The *big house* in Marlow is subdivided into apartments in reality, hence the small kitchen I assume, although as the conservatory was actually a house in North London, it could be that the kitchen shots are same North London house.

Unbelievable: I've never seen so many mistake in only a few lines. How did you get to understand my story (maybe with a little bit of imagination LOL!)? Chandra: yes I'd loads of question to ask him postpone, however I thought about only a few one at the moment (completely tart I am). I was more thrilled to talk to Alan's interviewer (Paul). He's one of the presenter of the "Night Waves" on BBC 3 radio. He's doing a great job there and in Sheffield as well for theatre. However I'll tell the rest at another moment with less faults I hope !!!

In answer to Juliana's query: "Staging Youth Theatre: A Practical Guide," by Rex Doyle, with Foreword by Alan Rickman. Here is the brief foreword by Alan Rickman. (Otherwise, the book offers no additional mention or any photos of him.):
"I first met and worked with Rex Doyle at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, when he directed me in his own play about the life of the great dancer Nijinsky.
Everything that makes Rex such a fine director and teacher was evident in that production. Meticulous research and great leaps of imagination. But perhaps most importantly it was a production that was guided at all times by Rex's openness and generosity towards the actors and his boundless gift for encouragement. And it was fun. The rehearsal room was by definition a market place for common sense, fleeting instincts, and mad ideas.
This excellent book is fed by exactly the same balance of the creative and the practical. Whether you need information on fund-raising, auditioning, running a rehearsal or making a prop, it is all here.
Youth Theatre continues to prove its worth not only in training young actors, directors and technicians, but also in developing the confidence and self-esteem of young people in a much wider sense. Dedicated youth leaders will benefit hugely from the guidance and inspiration which this book offers in abundance. Alan Rickman"

Hello everyone, I'm new at this and only just discovered the site thanks to my friend A Fish Needing Help. I would just like to pose a question: Can you describe for me in no more than 10 words, what the attraction is to Alan Rickman. The reason I'm asking is that I am intrigued to know if you guys are as potty about Alan as A Fish Needing Help?!!!! I accompanied A Fish Needing Help to Bowness and had a wonderful day as well as being very inspired by AR, who was a very down to earth gentleman and quite sexy too! I am currently going through his films as directed by AFNH. I can see how easily you can become smitten!!

Nathalie - great account - oh to have heard that voice speaking French! So many posts to get through, haven't been able to log on since Wednesday, seems like everyone had a good time. Noticed a mistake in my post though (thanks, Juliet!) His audition was for Richard II not III. I remembered that it was the opposite to the one in That Book, but as I don't have That Book, I can't cross-reference - lol!

Hi Mortiana, hi Nathalie, yes, the exam went well, thanks (if I'd missed the Bowness show to study and still done badly at the exam, I would be very pi..., er, annoyed with myself.) What terrible timing, I missed Harold Pinter in London (same day as the evil exam) too. Anyway... No more exams. EVER! Yeeeeeeeees! *hysterical laughter* My evenings are mine again, aaall mine! *opens bottle of wine* - Thanks so much for your account. Et excuse moi, mais quelle chance de cocue!;)) (a classic -rude- French joke about too-lucky people and their marital fortunes, you don't want to know...). Ah, Beaudelaire... school memories coming back. "Ses ailes de géant"? Let me get this right for everybody: Alan got high on a bag of toffees, tried to walk through a wall but he couldn't because he kept tripping on his own giant bird's wings? Mmmh... *doctor's cough*... I see... now Miss Nathalie, how many glasses of wines had you had yourself before the lucky encounter? ;) Just teasing, that was a... very vivid picture (and a terrible translation on my part). I can just see him. On another subject, I was so engrossed in the new job and the exam revisions, I never noticed Love Actually creeping on us. It's out soon, yepeee. There were pages of the film supplement of the Daily Torygraph devoted to it on Saturday, photos of Curtis, Firth, Neeson, Grant, McCutcheon, Thompson... Nighy... everybody. Well, nearly everybody. Mmph. Will you still be in England when it comes out? By the way, to the Bill Nighy fans here, I was looking up Corin Redgrave filmography yesterday to see if there was something getholdofable I hadn't seen yet and found that he (and Nighy) will be in a new movie soon, still in production. OK, I forget the title. Something about love.
Magda, agreed about the link html instructions on the 'add' page. I never add links because it takes my PC 30 minutes to change pages when I want to check...

Pam, "John Gissing" definitely made it out of the cutting room. It is a finished product that was shown at numerous film festivals, including Toronto's last year. But, as was said, alas, no distributor. Since it is a film pre-9/11, which views 'business' as the battleground of a generation (which it no longer is), I doubt that it ever will. I do believe that "Londinium," the previous film from the Binder brothers (which starred Colin Firth) did finally see a few showings on a US cable channel.

Very enlightening articles Magda, thank you. I do hope that this brilliant director, Richard Curtis, hasn’t shot himself in the foot by bringing too many political statements into a perfect romantic British comedy. He has been blessed with a dream team of talent and hopefully has kept his focus pure. I love his previous work, but don’t give a toss about his personal views on politics while I am watching his film-no matter which way he swings.

Another review up at the Rotten Tomatoes Review Page for Love Actually. Here is the relevant (to us) section of the latest review (from something called The Film Hobbit):"For instance Grant's Prime Minister character spends a lot of time off the subject, doling out anti-American political fodder that seems to have been included more because the Director wanted to slip in a political statement rather than having anything to do with the film itself. Maybe that time could have been used to wrap up a few unaddressed plot points? Most threads are tied up in a suitably satisfying fashion, but some, such as the status of Rickman and Thompson's marriage are simply left hanging. Good though it may be, in some ways, I get the sense that Love Actually wishes it was P.T. Anderson's much better Magnolia, set as it is on bringing so many disparate stories together, right down to doing so with unifying musical cues. In the end, despite Curtis' absolutely heroic efforts, Love never seems to have the necessary deftness to reach that high a plateau."
Suzanne: a suggestion. Why not take that part of the HTML Guide that describes how to do a link and copy it to the ADD page? Not the whole guide, but it would be nice to have the link info right there on the page where you're posting.

CME is one of the most unintentionally funny movies I've ever seen. Who could like either of those losers, in bed or out? (Funniest line: "And just think, when we were kids we didn't get along.") The scene where they return to the party after their wrestling match and all heads turn as they try to look like nothing's wrong...priceless. The only redeeming feature is AR's performance. And you pick up the info that you can add paprika to tuna salad and it tastes quite good.Anyway, Newsweek review of LA up:Newsweek review. It's not that good, frankly. Here's the AR/ET portion that answers the burning question about whether his character commits adultery or not: "The P.M.’s sister (Emma Thompson) is grappling with the wandering eye of her husband (Alan Rickman), whose saucy secretary (Heike Makatsch) is doing her best to seduce him. This triangle doesn’t really resolve itself, it just peters out."
So we can watch happily knowing that he only takes his pants off in the right bedroom.

I liked CME, but did notice that it was definitely a low budget movie. Saskia Reeve's outfits were not flattering or well fitting, including the shoes LOL, and one could plainly see the microphones. Although I admire the chap that played Richard, I saw way more of him than I wanted and way less of Rickman than I wanted! Also, did anyone wonder why the kitchen was so small in such a huge house? Houses of that era had huge kitchens and butler's pantries. I have always wondered if it was one of the cast's kitchen, or the director. The VHS was even worse, and despite all of that, I have also ordered the DVD. No need for "three guesses" on why, is there...

Just got the DVD of CME in the mail and saw about half of it so far. I didn't realize that you got to see ALL of Clive Owen. But, who in the heck did the sound for this thing? The mixing is horrible. Half of the scenes that Alan's in have classical music playing so loud that you can't hear most of his conversation. Then, in some scenes, like where the brother is invited to lunch, the microphones were placed so poorly on the set that the sound is just terrible. Married to a broadcaster. Know a lot about sound. Had to grumble. Sorry.

Lupin tells Neville that when the boggart comes out, to picture snape in his grandmas dress and vulture hat so that snape looks stupid and funny rather than menacing. Could the DoC please put paragraphs into the two large blocks of text that have been posted within the last week so that they're easier to read? It's really very hard otherwise. Also, here's the relevant portion of the Daily Record article, such as it is:
PIRATES of the Caribbean beauty Keira Knightley is Britain's sexiest female film star. The 19-year-old won more fans in Bend It like Beckham before starring with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in the swashbuckling Disney hit. But dishy Bloom lost out as Britain's sexiest film star to Bridget Jones hero Colin Firth, who won female hearts as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
More mature sex symbols Alan Rickman, Sean Connery and Sean Bean also made the top five in the poll of 4500 people by internet provider Tiscali.....

Nathalie, that is truly an evening to remember - sounds overwhelming. Did you have a question for him in conversation? or one you would have liked to ask in retrospect? I have a question or two if I ever meet him - that is why I ask you. Great encounter, thank you so much for sharing!
I'm going to read it again.....

More marure sexsymbol Alan rickman has made the top 5 in the poll of internet provider Tiscali, he became number 3 after Orlando bloom and before Sean Connery, Colin Firth was the number 1.That's what i call good news, isn't it?

Hi there, It's been a long time since but what a terrific time I had those months in London - a must be done experience-
(Au fait, Nice to hear about you GML, I really hope that your exams was a success).
Well, I've decided to take a little time to share with you some experience you would surely like to hear. I'd nearly forget about Alan Rickman when suddenly someone has reminded me about him and the fact that he would be in Bowness (many thanks to this person). Well, that's wonderful because I wanted so much to visit the Lake District, Northern England and Scotland. I needed a little vacation before going back to Paris so I've decided that it would be a wonderful occasion to meet AR and in the meanwhile visiting the North of England so that's what I've done!!! So I've been to Bowness-on-Windermere for the Festival and then headed off to Scotland... I know that you are more impatient to hear the story of our encounter with Alan.
(Mille excuse for my english but Alan's french is not better...Oups I didn't mean it Alan, I like your voice when you speak French, I really do, I promised...)
So let's start...
Friday morning in London, my journey has begun with an espresso (or more) and heading back to my office as usual. I was both exciting and impatient to finish my work and going back home. I've never seen the morning pass so quickly before and soon arrived the lunchtime that I've taken at the office (you know French meal always on the need for such a journey!). Afterwards, I went back home, my luggage ready for departure and so began my WE off, headed out of the flat to take the Picadilly line to Heathrow. On arrive, nearly missed the closure of the gate (Ouf). Taken my fly to Manchester and arrived on scheduled time. At the train station somebody has told me that there was a direct train to Windermere (well, that's great) but what a liar!!!! (Roger has told me never to trust the National Railway: I never had a better advice). However, after having waited for nearly I don't remember how many hours I finally got a train to Preston from Manchester Picadilly and then (after a while) to Oxenholmes. There, on the platform I've met two wonderful women (I'll call her L and H) who were also going to the Festival. So after having waited a couple of minutes (hours?) we have decided to take a taxi to Bowness. The landscape was really nice even in the darkness and soon we had arrived in Bowness. Me and H ( I'd rather not telling her name unless telling otherwise by her) went directly to the Old Laundry to take our tickets and see if we were on time for the evening performance and yes we were ( L was too tired to come with us), super I'd always wanted to see the BELCEA quartet, marvellous violonist, violoncellist playing Mozart, Bartok and Beethoven with an electrifying impulse.
The women at the Old Laundry told us that we even had enough time to go to our hotel and head back to the theatre. so I went to my hotel and headed back to the theatre but too late, the performance has already began but a very nice woman at the box office allowed me to listen to them from behind the stairs, what a funny place to listen to such a beautiful live music but I had enjoy it whatsoever. After a few minutes and my head full of Mozart, I was allowed to get into the studio (or theatre but more like a studio because it's very tiny inside). At the interlude, I met H again and we had a nice conversation. We decided to return to our place for the second part and what I really didn't expect came: Monsieur Alan Rickman en personne!! I was so shocked I didn't want to stop to say bonjour or whatsoever... I ask H if I really had seen him even if knew it perfectly so she turn back her head and Alan and another man(Roger Glossop) were waving at us, she waved back and we went back to the studio. Alan and Roger also took a seat at the highest row. I tried to concentrate on the musician and succeed well enough because I thought it was weird to have Alan in the same room when didn't expected, however I must recognize that I was really aware of his physical presence and from time to time I couldn't help myself looking at him, It was a curious feeling because my head simply wouldn’t admit that he could be here while I was expecting to see him the next day. After the performance, I went to the "ladies" and at my return H presented me to Roger Glossop, the director of the festival. It was nice meeting him; really, I daresay I admire the work he has done for the people who leave here and his devotion for the theatre.
- Roger if ever you read this I really wanted to tell you that I had been really pleased to meet you and Paul as well and I wish you all the best for your Festival, I really mean it. So if one day you and your family come to Paris I would be very pleased to escort you or simply give a very warm welcoming as you did for me and the same goes for Paul -
(If ever you have the chance to go Bowness go and see the Old Laundry and the fantastic world of Beatrix Potter especially during its festival. There are always nice plays to see and a lot of other cultural attraction. This year I think it was the new version of Antigone by Blake Morrison which is worth seeing and I have missed it, what a shame!)
Well back to the story--- So I speak to Roger and I don't how and when suddenly came Alan again but this time straight to us, no need to say that I was completly shocked and that has resulted to my being completely tart (well, that what I was thinking at the time). Roger presented me to Alan and Alan replied in French "enchanté de vous connaître" in a quite funny way but nice (I wonder how did he knew I was French, maybe my accent). But I didn't remember having said anything, maybe a quite shy "nice to meet you, Alan" but full of this frenchy pride; I wouldn't dare recognize that I was totally thrilled to meet him and I don't exactly remember when he did it but he gave us caramel toffee that I couldn't refused!! I’ve noticed that he seemed to like sweet quite much as he was eating nearly all the bag. At the time it didn't make me feel anything special to be next to him, I was just thinking that he was a man like everybody else, quite charming but just a man and I behaved myself like I always did in the presence of a man, always pleased to make new acquaintance. I believe now that I couldn't realised that it was the same Alan Rickman I've seen many times in the "In Demand" clip and a lot of other nice movies. I don't really know what he was thinking at the time but he was just here wandering around us trying to look at the various posters surrounding us and moving in a quite funny way that made me wondered if he wasn't a little bit drunk or if it was really his way of moving, you know like Baudelaire's "Albatros":
L'acteur est "...semblable au prince des nuées
Qui hante la tempête et se rit de l'archer ;
Exilé sur le sol au milieu des huées,
Ses ailes de géant l'empêchent de marcher."
I asked him if he‘d be there all day the day after, he mustn’t have really understood what I asked because he answered in with famous tone that he wouldn’t be here all day because he would mostly be at the Royalty Cinema to present the movies and that he would only be there for the interview. However, maybe I didn’t say what I meant because I simply wanted to know if he would be with us all-day or only during the interview so I laugh and he smirked at me. I hope he didn’t think I was laughing at him because I was only laughing about the misunderstanding between us and maybe also a little bit about the way he was moving his back (drunk or not?). Then I told “see you tomorrow then” and I return to H and roger to tell them goodbye because I suddenly wanted to go back to the hotel to swim at the hotel swimming pool ( I know I’m quite strange sometimes even for me) so that what I did even if I had that they might be quite surprise to see me going so quickly. In fact, I wanted to leave him alone because it was too weird for me to be so suddenly in his presence that I couldn’t stand it no more…
I think that it will be enough for today. Maybe I‘ll tell you the rest of the story another time. I hope you have enjoy it as much as I did, maybe more…
Sheers to you all,
Nathalie

Hi everybody! Super pics! Could you please tell me those who have met him if his eyes are hazel-blue or hazel-green. It looks to me like they are not 100% golden brown, are they rimmed in green (like I always thought when I watched his movies). Thank you.

From the San Jose Mercury News: ``Love Actually'' -- It would not be saying nearly enough about this touching romantic comedy from Richard Curtis (``Four Weddings and a Funeral,'' ``Bridget Jones' Diary'') to call it a feel-good movie. ``Love Actually'' -- shown here as a work-in-progress -- is actually the feel-fantastic film of the fall. And even when it's trying too hard to be all of that, it remains so luminously bathed in the light touch of Curtis' writing, and the beguiling performances of Hugh Grant, Firth, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman, it is rarely less than wonderful.

And yes......those hands!! Can't wait for Love Actually. I just watched Closetland for the first time. I was nervous at first because I know the content is very heavy. AR was incredible. Have never seen an AR movie where he wasn't incredible. sigh..... L.

Hi Joan, I wasn't exactly being sympathetic in my Elliott Marston post. My focus was on smothering Alan with kisses if I recall correctly ;D
Actually I found Marston to be a most detestable character. Out of the roles I've seen Alan in (true I haven't seen many) Marston infuriated me the most. His contempt for others and I don't mean when he simply shot two men to death without blinking (that would be too obvious) but when Marston spat his cigar end onto the floor for his servant to pick up, I wanted to smack him across the back of his head and make him pick it up. Something for me to meditate on. Who do you think would win the prize for most detestable?

Hi All, I've just discovered the Guestbook over the weekend (led to it by a link in Greasy Git's website)and I wanted to say how thrilled I am to finally be able to meet other AR fans. I am so impressed and moved by the willingness of all you ladies who maintain websites and those who send in pics and give accounts of meeting AR. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to be able to search the web for all those tidbits about AR and I thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for sharing. I appreciate it so much. I wouldn't be such a big fan if it weren't for you guys. I am sure that the best part of being an AR fan is simply the wonderful group of people that admire him. The wonderful qualities we all admire in AR are there present in his fans also. I wonder if he realises what a bunch of lovely people represent him? Sorry for gushing on so but its truly how I feel. Whoa, great great photos! Thanks so much Juliet and Sue!Ali-pat, I asked my British friend about the tomato and she said it's for ketchup. She didn't know why a tooth would be in there, though. As for the Cleaning Woman, it's hard for me to make out all the words and my Italian isn't that good anyway, but I think I hear her saying first that she's sorry, she didn't know the room was occupied--then I can't make out the words--and at the end I think she's saying she can clean up, if Natalie wants. As for the tea room, I think someone posted a while back where that was--some National Trust place, a bit out from central London I thought?

Ali-Pat, Would love to discuss CME, but unfortunately find myself at a loss for most of your questions myself! Spoiler space follows:

1-4 As an American, I'm ignorant as to the locations and the vocabulary, sorry.
5 I thought she was being a bit more reserved, as if she was a model lounging around for window dressing and was only supposed to be speaking very softly and carefully. (Perhaps this comes from Richard's derisive description of the party later). Or, conversely, she is closed in, not speaking of much because as soon as she opens her mouth, Sinclair jumps into either correct or agree with her and then goes off on one of his tangents?
6 I took it that she meant to grab the dress and trample it or tear it as a final symbol that it was all over
7 I'm having to go on memory, as I'm still waiting for the DVD to come, but my feeling (as someone who speaks Spanish rather than Italian) was that she was asking her not to come in and maid said something about 'your husband', meaning Richard, being asleep. I'll probably be corrected on this, or if no one else comes up with the answer I'll be sure to listen for it when I watch
8 Well, I guess I put this in the 'suspended reality' of the film experience. For the same reason that people have conversations and dialogues that go somewhere-it's required for the film as compared to how real life works. Either that, or the legendary 'English reserve' is more substantial than I thought (So sorry, noticed that you were bleeding all over the floor, but didn't think it was my place to intrude).
9 You know that's a very interesting question (hear Sinclair?) Hmm, maybe she has 200 pairs of the same shoes-maybe there was a scene relating the shoe fetish of Sinclair and/or Natalie that regretabbly ended up on the cutting room floor? ;-)

Thank you to everybody for their reports from Bowness, Cumbria, and the wonderful PHOTO'S!!!! Such a beautiful part of England!! Good on AR for going there. He never stops thinking of his fans, does he. It shows what a generous spirit he has. That, I think, is what we should remember.
