Regarding Hlp I am a Fish. The movie will premiere in Denmark on Friday, but it is planned for international release. My copy of the CD is a double CD with the international English songs on one cd and localised Danish versions on the other. I therefore have two versions of Intelligence one with AR and the other with the Danish actor doing the Danish voice over (This actor is known in Denmark as Mr. Voice, I do not think he delivers this number as well as AR, but I might be partial). I know that the CD has to sell at least 100.000 copies to reach break-even. It includes leading Danish pop artist like Cartoons, Creamy and the Olsen Brothers (The winner of the European Song Contests). It is planned as a big national film and CD. There is a lot of talk in Danish media regarding the fact that Disney releases no less than three childrens movie on the same day as Fish.So the film is considered competition by the leading childrens movie producer.

Hello all: fyi---"D" is spending a nice weekend with her sister--she is doing well--she was a bit insulted over certain emails that she received after the death of her friend--but she has fotten over it--she's a fighter and won't let anything keep her down for long--including poor health. I'm sure she'll be back, she's having a really good time with her Dance Hard. Everything is good with her. I'll pass along your concern I know she'll appreciate it. Della

The trials and tribulations that afflict us in this vale of tears that we call life are many and sometimes they do indeed seem to be overwhelming or insurmountable. During those times, we need the support of a group who can give us guidance, advice, concrete help or simply a willing shoulder to cry on. The best people to offer this support are friends and family or trained professionals such as ministers, therapists or medical personnel. Many of us probably know this from personal experience already.
The Internet can leave an impression of intimacy that is more apparent than real. A large group of people with one strong interest in common suddenly find themselves confronting something they have not bargained for and have no idea how to respond. Such a group is not a stable source of support or comfort in time of intense personal stress. The potential for doing more harm than good, albeit with the best of intentions, is great.
Compounding this situation is the very real danger of revealing too much private information on the Internet where anyone can see it. Let me stress the word anyone. This forum is not the place - for a poster's own sake - to reveal too much or to indicate a need for help. Such support as may be possible to give is best and most safely given privately.
It's not a matter of sympathizing with someone's troubles or callously disregarding them. End of lecture.

Eva, is "Help! I'm a Fish" in Danish or English and where did you get it, please? Their web site has not changed in ages, and the IMDB still lists this film as being released in Scandinavia only.

I am glad to hear that "D" is doing well, and has found a support system during her time of need. I also think it was not appropriate for someone to send her a nasty e mail anonymously-if I were to send a nasty e mail, which I have never done BTW, it would be in my own name. I personally have severe asthma which has limited my ability to work, and a teenager that expects me to pay for her college, and unfortunately, bills, like the poor, whill always be with us. I come here to find a world that is free from such unfortunate realities. I am sure that there are others here that would have equally distressing things going on in their lives, including "D". I trust that all of us here understood, sympathized and related to "D"s hardships, and are relieved that she has found an appropriate venue to express herself and receive support. She will certainly be in my prayers, and if she wants to come to a place that is created for pleasure, happiness and a respite from the cares of the world, I know that we will all welcome her. Cheers.

Would you like to know, what I am playing on my CD right now? A CD with Alan Rickman singing! The CD is the soundtrack to Help I am a fish, and AR is reciting and singing a song called Intelligence. He is getting to be a real rock star these days. I just accidentialy found the CD on my Saturday shopping trip. It is a partly Danish version and I beleive you could probably get a local version of the soundtrack. The label is EMI 5295452. There is a website adress mentioned www.helpfish.net which might give more information. (I have not been there yet as I am hasting to bring you this ground breaking information). Hos does he sing? Very well actually - very seductive. I will now see the enclosed video on the CD and keep you posted..

It would also be nice if people didn't assume they were being insulted when someone teases them or disagrees with them about something. Anyone who's read Georgiana's postings for the past two years like I have would know that she was making a witty play on the similarity of two words when a missing letter allowed either one to have been correct; the point being that AR's smile could be either one depending on the role.
No, "D" hasn't posted here for a while, which is a shame because she brought some good insights to her appreciation of AR's work. But perhaps family and friends are taking up her attention right now.

Re: "sinister." In the BBC Radio1 piece (linked below by Magda, I believe) I noticed he was referred to as a "film baddie." Those villainous roles do seem to linger on, don't they? And on and on . . . ;-) But Sharleen tagged it; he does have that aura of sexy menace.

The video and Sharleen were on Videotech (Carlton tv) last night, and regarding "The Voice" she was asked;
"You personally requested Alan Rickman to star in the video - why?"
"He's gorgeous - he's, you know, a lovely man - but obviously you're not going to know that from our video. He was just someone I felt - when Vaughn and I spoke about the person that would be in the video with me, we needed someone that was really sinister, but someone you could quite easily be totally taken in with, fall in love with. And, not quite knowing the relationship between the two of us was really important for the start of the video, and he seemed right."

Did anyone else think that the Cinematique show seemed a bit "flat"--the audience didn't seem to respond very enthusiastically, except to Haley Joel Osmont--some comments seemed to "sink, like lead balloons" and noone laughed at the jokes very enthusiastically--BTW, why can't Bruce wear a tie? Granted, that shirt probably cost more than my car, but still a bit casual for black tie--I guess we are lucky that he didn't have the baseball cap on.

I had the pleasure to see Alan Rickman host the American Cinematheque Awards - in person. I am a volunteer at A.C. and was blessed to be able to volunteer that night at the award ceremony. Unfortunately, I was so busy with my volunteer duties that I didn't get much chance to see any of the celebrities before or after the show. But Alan Rickman was such a fantastic host. I was so happy when I heard that he was appearing at the award ceremony. I had a seat way, way off to the side - but with a perfect view of the stage - and then I watched it again when it aired on TNT. I am so happy I got to see him in person.

How I wished Alan would have *been* Hans for a moment or two when he first appeared as emcee for the program... and made some comment, in character [after Jeremy Irons' weird little scene], getting back at Simon, his older brother for the comments made in the 3rd Die Hard. While I expect AR never saw the Die Hard series, he might have known that Jeremy's character, Simon, was his older brother... especially if a check came in for that quick little scene.

I enjoyed Mr. Rickman's (less than 10 minutes) time on the Bruce Willis tribute. I had no idea it was her DVD of "Hudson Hawk" that kept the Queen Mother young. Or that the Brits were all ensconced on their little island desparately trying to amass enough jet fuel to bring them here? Or that Mr. Rickman relished the full "buttock-clenching" terror of such an event. Charming.

Also, how exactly does a tango symbolize a fuel crisis? Does it represent Prime Minister Blair dancing around the issue?

Hi everybody, It must be nearly 18 months since I last posted on this site. My wife, Sue, is an avid fan of AR. I have to admit I do admire his acting and characterisation skills. Sue did once have lunch with him when he was touring Hamlet. The reason I am posting is that, having seen the 'In Demand' video several times we have a couple of observations you might like to hear! Firstly we believe the driver of the car is 'Flat Eric' The Tango scene in the Petrol Station is a premonition of the Fuel Crisis that we have just suffered, here in the UK. The ending is surely in Brighton and this signifies that he is a Labour (Socialist) Politician (We all know his political feelings) arriving early for the Labour Party Conference. This would also account for the helicopter and motorcyclists - Security!! Any reciprocal comments would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work everyone - it certainly is a great site. The UK tv programme Celebrity did a nice feature on the Bruce Willis tribute. Nice clips of Alan, plus snippets of interview. Q:(about working with Bruce Willis) So, what is he like really? AR: He's exactly what you might think. Somebody with a well-developed sense of humour but works very hard and cares about the whole film. Q: What is your favourite Bruce movie? AR: I did enjoy the Sixth Sense. That was the last one I saw..I was fooled, I didn't know.... Q: Now, you're hosting the show tonight, are you nervous about it all? AR: Only if the auto-cue breaks down, then I'm in BIG trouble! Q: So you haven't learnt your lines, then? AR:You must be joking! Then there was a clip of Alan staggering on stage with crutches and neck brace. On getting to the mic he said "I just dropped in to say'hello'...!" Sarah not in France.

For anyone still interested in the words to the Texas-In Demand Video were AR sizzles. Many people were inquiring and piecing it together but congrats to Katrina B for the closest to the actual words. A little high tech, and a lot of sifting beyond the singers accent there were two lines left in question. After the drawn out chorus It"s only when I fall asleep I see the SLIMEST smile But when my dreams just MOVE along You've lost that race by miles. Listened to it again and see what you think. It makes more sense to the video. There are many ways to read the story in the video but one thing is for sure. That dance was amazing and too bad hidden by so many obstacles. If you have comments then please post them. I am going to view the Bruce Willis tribute which has been promised for our area this coming Wed night at 8pm. Any glimpse of AR off the Screen or Video will be a treat. The advertisement given on the STAR channel barely shows him but at least he is blonde again. I hope he is given more air time than is usually alotted from Non American actors. However Bruce Willis is a power in hollywood right now and can give AR recognition that he deserves even just as a friend. I am not anti-American before I get that comment. I hope the show is worth watching......Thanks and Hi to everyone

I was able to get the smaller version in total. Fabulous story board. I have seen the gamut of the movie spectrum to triple X and I truly believe that AR had more sex appeal with one stroke of the hand, gesture or moment in that dance than any X+ film could have done better. He can put more into your imagination than what is actually there. It was an amazing video. I wish that I could have downloaded the larger entire version. Hi Suzanne. I have tried e-mailing you but can't seem to get through. I chose to download the (8.7 mb) videogram. Maybe that was too much. Even if it can't be fixed it is still a pretty good image and worth having anyway. Thanks for all your help. Susan

If anyone's interested in reading about what happened at the Willis event, they can peruse this Hollywood Reporter article; there's only a mention of AR's name so I don't think it's really worth printing out in total.

Seems to have been a fun time last night, according to Reuters:
Notable Quotes
September 24, 2000
HOLLYWOOD (Reuters) - They said it -- notable quotes from celebrities.
"If you're going to launch a tribute to a Republican in Hollywood, get a left-wing Englishman to host it."

"I didn't know you were a Republican."

Hello all: I know I'm a little late on this but I've been so busy--sorry--I just wanted to say--I caught the chat with Sharleen the other day and I must say I was bored with the whole thing there was only one mention of AR and nothing on In Demand. I typed in three seperate questions and she didn't get to a single one of them--but some of the questions asked of her were so silly it made the whole thing seem kinda like a waste of time. Would have LOVED to hear her opion of AR, and the dance, and I really wanted to know the signifiagance of the helicopter and the motorcycles---does anyone know????? Well, gotta go---wouldn't it be great if AR would do a live chat? Doesn't anyone have any pull???I'd be willing to beg! Della

Greetings - a plea to our Lucky American Friends... I have called my cable company and they have confirmed they will NOT be playing the American Cinematheque thing at all in Australia, so unless a broadcast station picks it up (unlikely) we will miss out. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could tape it and send me a copy???? Now that I know we can play American format video's on our VCR here, I would love to have a copy, and then invite anyone in Australia over to see it (albeit, I realise it will be easier for people in Sydney to get to my place...)

I'm getting a little worried about Blow Dry. The Miramax site insists that it's "Now Playing" and this article in the Irish Times about Peter McDonald (an actor whose career received a big boost from Paddy Breathnach's I Went Down) describes his role in the upcoming BD with Alan Rickman and EMMA THOMPSON! So now we've got a fantasy movie with a fantasy cast.

And yet another confirmation of Rickman as host of the Willis testimonial or whatever, brought to me by an 'alert' from Yahoo Saturday, Sept. 23 + LOS ANGELES - The American Cinematheque, a nonprofit film group, will hold its 15th annual Moving Picture Ball fundraiser at the Beverly Hilton. BRUCE WILLIS will be honored for his TV and movie contributions. JULIA ROBERTS will present the award. Hosted by ALAN RICKMAN. Other celebrities to appear include CATE BLANCHETT, BILLY BOB THORNTON, HALEY JOEL OSMENT, MATTHEW PERRY, PAUL REISER and CHRIS TUCKER.
I guess Rickman and Willis must have bonded during the making of Die Hard. When I went to see 'Tango at the End of Winter' in London in 1992 (?) I saw Willis coming out at the end of the show. He was somewhat conspicuous in the London theatre crowd by virtue of the baseball cap he was wearing. He may have thought it would make him anonymous. Not!

Anyway, here's Excite's new snippet:
"HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Julia Roberts will present the American Cinematheque Award to Bruce Willis on Wednesday night at the 15th annual Moving Picture Ball. Alan Rickman will emcee the event from the Beverly Hilton's International Ballroom. Among those set to appear are Cate Blanchett, Glenn Gordon Caron, Haley Joel Osment, Matthew Perry and Chris Tucker. The event will be aired on TNT."

Hi all! I managed to get into the chat after much fiddling around and the only thing that I saw about AR was Ali from London asking: "How did you end up working with Alan Rickman?" Sharleen: "He's a friend of Michael Kamen, the string arranger, who did the strings when we performed at the UN. When I thought of Alan Rickman, I asked him to make the phone call."
I had actually plugged in a question which was put in the lineup but it never came up. Shame!

Susan, so glad you finally get to see the video! If you keep the Videogram in the Restored mode (as opposed to Maximized), it shouldn't be fuzzy. However, there is a slight jumpiness, which is how it plays on my VCR, so I guess that was a result of the conversion from PAL to NTSC. (??)

Gosh, it's been ages since I posted anything here, but I found this cute little tidbit from Sharleen Spiteri on the Official Texas Website. I hope it hasn't been posted here before...
“I put in two days of tango lessons with Alan for that dance scene,” says Sharleen. “Still, now I’m sorted for weddings, christenings and bar mitzvahs for life. I just need Alan Rickman to turn up everywhere with me.”

At the risk of being redundant (that's not possible here, is it? *grin*), here they are (thanks again to Claire and Georgiana!)! The "In Demand" Videograms.
I imagine those who are having trouble with RealPlayer will be most interested in these. Or perhaps you'd just like to have both types. This one has a little more advertising stuff than the RealPlayer version. But it also has a few extra seconds at the end.
And I know everyone has different preferences, so I made three sizes. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages:
The large one has obvious advantages (all the better to see...), but it has the least amount of frames per second.
The small one is... well, small, yes, but has the *most* frames per second. And every frame of that Tango makes a difference, believe me!
The medium one (which is the size I make most of my Videograms) is a cross between the other two.
And in case you didn't know this already, once you have downloaded and double clicked the file to play it, you can play it again (and again and again and...) by double clicking the picture. One click will pause it.
Since the RealPlayer works on Macintosh Computers, I'm not going to mess with AVI files right now. UNLESS... there are any Mac users who are having trouble with RealPlayer also. If so, please let me know.

I calculated what time the Sharleen Spiteri interview would be in a timezone which is either yours or near yours (although I missed western Asia as I have few subscribers there - sorry!), so hopefully most people can calculate the time from this:
The interview is at 5.30pm British time, so it will be at the following times in your time zone:
America (EST - e.g. New York): 12.30pm (Friday Afternoon) America (PST - e.g. Los Angeles): 9.30am (Friday Morning) Western Europe (e.g. Paris): 6.30pm (Friday Evening) Australia (EST - e.g. Sydney): 3.30am (Saturday morning) Australia/Asia (e.g. Perth, Singapore): 12.30am (Saturday morning)

Thanks to all for lyrics and analysis! What do you all think of "I see the genie smile"? Have no idea what it might mean, but I think that's what I hear--though it's definitely muffled, at least through my speakers. And what do you think of the idea that this affair with the Sexy Older Man could be just a dream...? It's in the dream that "you lose the race by miles." Maybe that's why she's troubled at the end--she has to wake up and get back to real life, the intrusions of which might be represented by the motorcycles and helicopter??? Argh! To Laura--so glad I could help--the thought of any AR fan being deprived of this experience is distressing in the extreme. :)

I obviously had time to kill at work. Here are the lyrics to “In Demand” (as heard on my tiny PC speakers). Things I couldn’t hear clearly (or that are mumbled or varied in the chorus) are in parenthesis.
In Demand
(When) we were together I was blown away
Just like paper from a fan
But you would act like I was just a kid
Like we were never gonna last
CHORUS
But now I’ve got someone who cares for me
He wrote my name in silver sands
I think you know you(’ve) lost the love of your life
And you say I was the best you’ve ever had
Because I’m in demand
You’re thinking of the way(s) you should’ve held my hand
And all the times you say you didn’t understand
You never had our love written in your plans
But now I’m in demand
Don’t ever think you saw the best of me
There’s a side you’ll never know
’Cause love and lovin’ are two different things
You set your sights far too low
CHORUS (and partial repetition of chorus)
It’s only when I fall asleep
I see that (??) smile
But when my dreams just (melt/move?) along
You’ve lost the race by miles
CHORUS (partial, with variations)
You know I’m in demand
You see I’m in demand (etc.)
I’m not a huge fan of the lyrics, but there are some nice moments in the editing as when AR’s smile is timed to fit “there’s a side you’ll never know.” In the opening shots when AR seems a bit aloof (and since he’s older), it seems that he might be the one she’s singing about, but then the lovely shot of him reaching around her and stretching his arm out slowly coincides with the chorus about having found someone. I think the helicopter and general hubbub of motorcycles is meant to connote celebrity (being “in demand” in general and by the guy). I think the end, when AR gets out, is supposed to make you think the car is hers (celebrity), whereas you might have assumed it was his (but he seems to just have a duffle bag). Of course music video narratives are rarely very clear. . . . Thanks so much for making the real player version available. I’m anxious to see the actual video.

Fausta, here's a first pass at the lyrics. Perhaps someone with better ears than I (Claire?) can fix what I've mucked up or fill in the blank where I can't even make a stab at it.
"In Demand"
Sharleen Spiteri
We were together I was blown away.
Just like paper from a fan.
You would act like I was just a kid.
Like we were never gonna last.
But now I’ve got someone who cares for me.
He wrote my name in silver sands.
I think you know you lost the love of your life.
You said I was the best you ever had.
Because I’m in demand.
You thinking of the way you should have held my hand,
And all the times you say you didn’t understand.
You never had our loving in your plans.
And now I’m in demand.
You never think you saw the best of me.
There’s a side you’ll never know.
Love and Loving are two different things.
You set your sights far too low.
Now I’ve got someone who cares for me …
….
It’s only when I fall asleep
I see the __?___ smile
When my dreams just move along.
You lost the way five miles.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah …
Because I’m in demand…

Well... Thats interesting - the Searching For John Gissing website has been pulled down and is now back 'under construction' - guess we'll have to keep checking back now to see if they eventually put up something a bit more informative than the last one (although the last one was fine for telling someone where to hang out to see the shooting...)

Fausta, I didn't hear the word "hand" on the Texas In Demand video but that means nothing since I can barely figure out what she's saying!! LOL At one point, I think she may be saying, "wrote my name in silver sands." Anyone else hear that? Also, does anyone know if the lyrics are available online anywhere? Welcome Leslie! Glad you got the video downloaded!!

Back again... Empire Online reports that filming has begun on Harry Potter. It also says that Harris and AR are still debating over whether to join the film or not. Another news website, Cinescape, also went on to claim that Harris hadn't officially pulled out and attributed that to Empire online, but darned if I could find that little bit of gossip on the Empire website! Just fyi...

Thanks Mindy for the feedback on the Texas CD! I think I'll wait the extra week for it to be released in Australia (hopefully!). I imagine that someone from Britain will stampede down to their local music store and buy the CD and let others know - particularly our poor American fans who like they will have to buy the CD, right??? Or are all the UK fans sitting cosy at home watching the video they taped from MTV...
Also, thanks Georgiana for the tips on coverting the wallpaper to Mac friendly pictures! I was a bit worried there about Mac people missing out - if they wanted the images!
Susan - puzzled as to why it may be blurry, but you may have donwloaded the wrong image size for your computer desktop. It sounds like you may have downloaded the smaller size (for e.g. 640x480) - and also had the 'Display' pulldown menu set to 'stretch' when really, your computer is set for next size up (e.g. 800x600). You can always verify what resolution you have (on a PC) by going Control Panel > Display > Select the Settings tab. Down on the bottom right, it should tell you what size screen area you have. Hope that helps! I have ordered more Sheriff pictures, and when they arrive, I hope to make/improve on the Sheriff desktop image!
Since according to the "survey" on my website, I probably should make some SS wallpaper since it seems to be everyone's fave movie! If anyone knows where good pictures are on the internet, let me know!

Hi All Nice page and busy guestbook. Congrats. Alan is a great actor and deserves the credit. I ahve 2 questions : Does anyone know the current status/history of Alans involvement on a film of Aleister Crowley's life? I think the xcreenplay may have been by Snoo Wilson. I run a Crowley web site with news and articles spanning the last century of the perception of Crowley in the media. Related to the above is the old rumour that Ken Russell (superb director) has tried for many years to do a film of Crowley's life. Also i know Alan has done an audio recording of Arthur Calder Marshalls "The Magick Of My Youth" a contemporary of Crowleys rather twee account of life in Oxford at the beginning of the 20th Centruy. Anyone got a copy? I can trade for any of the live shows i also collect at http://www.btinternet.com/~dougbrown93/ I sincerely hope someone can help. Best Wishes Doug

Thanks again Sally for the great wallpaper. Like S;), I don't know if I can part with the one I downloaded from you just recently - the very sexy ("in a sinister sort of way") Sheriff. If you do decide to do more wallpaper of the Colonel, there's a great picture, where he looks just dreamy, when he sees Marianne for the first time. (I'm quite sure the pic is from that scene.) The look of instant love in his eyes just makes me weak in the knees! I saw it on one of the sites but can't remember where. It was a very large close up shot.
I went to my local HMV (Canada) and they didn't even have a listing for In Demand yet. I think her look at the end of the clip shows how much she's going to miss him. She's dreading him leaving. Can you blame her after a night like that? It looks like he's going off for a while with his duffle bag thrown over his shoulder. My 8 yr. old daughter came into the room as I was watching it and said, "They shouldn't do that in a gas station. They could get gas on themselves." The innocence of her remark just made me laugh. I mean, I'm sure any one of us wouldn't care if we got gas, motor oil or anything else for that matter on us at that point!

I think Alan is a very talented actor who definitely keeps himself busy. I love Sense and Sensibility - it's my favorite movie. He was also great in Galaxy Quest! With that voice of his and that look on his face - who wouldn't consider him romantic and charming?! I hope I see him in many more films in the future!

Hi KarenB!
I was wondering, too!
1. Don't know about the motorcycles. If I were cuddling in a chauffeur-driven Bentley (is that a Bentley?) with Alan Rickman I would not notice helicopters, motorcycles, or anything short of ground-to-air missiles. Is he wearing his seat belt, I wonder?
2. Don't know the lyrics. All I can make out is the word "h*nd*. Imagine that.
3. Any theory on what it all means is fine with me. I do have a couple of theories myself.
One question, is that building at the end a recognizeable landmark?
And thank you to Mr. Rickman for doing that video!
Fausta <emma-mail@mailexcite.comfoo>
USA - Wednesday, September 20, 2000 at 08:45:21 (PDT)
Hi all-- Perhaps you folks can help me with a few burning questions: just what are those motorcycles and helicopter doing in that video anyway? And does anyone have the lyrics to the song? I think I've got everything but "It's only when I fall asleep / I see the [something] smile." And why, after panting all night over the Sexy Older Man and talking about how much he cares for her, does she look so troubled as he leaves her? (Or is *he* the one she's saying good-bye to in the song, and the video is a flashback?) I know I'm over-analyzing, but, you know, when you watch a video sixteen dozen times you get to wondering about these things. *bg* HUGE thanks, btw, which I neglected to offer the other day, to those responsible for making this available!!!!!

For Mac users re wallpaper: Yes, download (it downloads on my machine as an unidentified file--just save it). I then used shareware GraphicConverter to convert it to a PICT file (but I see Bitmap works just fine, too) and stored it where I keep pictures. You can then choose it as your wallpaper in 'appearance' under control panels. They are lovely, Sally.

Thanks Gilda - if you can let me know its that simple, I can then just post that instruction on the webpage where people download... As for "S", well then (he he he), I shall just have to sift though all the images of Colonel Brandon and create a wallpaper to rival yours - although if you just have that picture of him with the hat, I imagine it would probably end up forming the centrepiece of any S&S wallpaper I created... If you have different wallpaper, I am sure others out there would like to know where you got it so they can have it as well!
I see you can pre-order the Texas single, 'In Demand" at the UK HMV site, but it doesn't say if its the video CD or not. It release date in the UK is oct 2nd according to HMV. Maybe Mindy (it is Mindy isn't it who works in the music store?) can let us know if its a global thing whether its released with the video on the CD. Steep (for Australians) at 4.99 pounds (sorry, no pound sign on my computer)+ shipping. If the previous rumour that it'll be released here on the 9th Oct is true, I think I can wait a week... (After all, I have it on video now!) The Australian music web sites haven't acknowledged the song exists yet (although at least, it is starting to appear on TV, so its-a-coming!)

By the way... Does anyone know what the file extension is for desktop wallpaper on a Mac computer? For e.g., its *.bmp for the Windows computers. I don't know if I can save for the Mac when on a PC, but I do know I can probably save it in Adobe Photoshop for the Mac, and then someone out there can tell me if they downloaded it successfully. Just asking in case the Mac people are missing out here and would like the wallpaper!

Got this quirky little book in at the bookstore today:
"Cinematherapy : The Girl's Guide to Movies for Every Mood" by Nancy K. Peske, Beverly West
Which has very nice things to say about TMD and AR. They have movies to help all your moods and TMD is listed under PMS. Then later in the book it has a little boxed thingie drooling over Alan. A great book for a movie lovers collection.

Sally: CNN confirmed that AR is in "Harry Potter"; the IMDB site is not foolproof and depends a lot on volunteers forwarding or even updating information on the site. So until we hear otherwise, he's in. Of course, you'd think his publicist or agent would send out a press release...

Hello everyone and welcome, Jennifer from Ballarat! How appropriate, a town where GOLD was discovered! I'm feeling very olympic today! I received a call today from Austar in response to my letter about Dogma and Dark Harbor. The person I spoke to was very helpful, and had some trouble finding DH and I explained how difficult it was getting these inderpendent films here in Australia. I was able to tell her when and who had made this film and she has now passed on my letter to Showtime and the Movie network. We are looking at a time frame of 6 months or so - It takes 6 months to get to video after being in the cinema and a further 6months to get to Pay Tv with help from the distributors. So, will keep a sharp look at my Pay Tv. guide and hope for the best. I would like to say , they do like getting letters etc from fans of AR and the more they get the more they will pass on so if there are any fans out there who write here on the GB or who just read these pages - write or phone your Pay Tv. operator NOW! Power to the people I say! bye.

Sally, honey, that's an easy one. Once Rickman is confirmed ("confirmed" being the key term) as Snape, word will get out and he will get credit where credit is due. On the other hand, it could just be a bunch of excited fans spreading rumors with no sources to back them up!

Hi everyone, I haven't posted before but I browse around when I have time and always enjoy it--such good humor and, shall we say, *enthusiastic* appreciation of Mr. Rickman and his work! Anyway, I was having trouble with that mysterious so-rare-we-don't-have-a-file-on-it error with RealPlayer, like others were, but I finally got The Video to play on my computer, and I thought that what worked for me might work for others. (Not the downloaded file, alas, but a streaming version.) First open RealPlayer, then type (or cut and paste) the file name (http://adot.net/03_media/04_videos/id/id.rm) in the Location box, and press enter. That might well work--it did for the friend who suggested it to me. If it *doesn't* work, you'll at least get an *informative* error message--I did, anyway. It told me it couldn't find necessary plug-ins. So, following the directions in the error message, I went to View, then Preferences, then Upgrade. Under RealPlayer Plug-Ins, I clicked Settings and proceeded to download everything that said audio or video (I just sort of guessed on that part, since it didn't tell me which particular plug-in it needed). Also Real Download, which I gather is supposed to rev everything up. I don't know which was the magic download, but now when I type the address in the Location box and enter, I get the video (and proceed to faint, *ahem*, but that's another matter entirely!). I hope this makes sense and is of some use, and not just a waste of bandwidth proving only that I'm not on the cutting edge of anything. ;) Best to everyone! Karen B.

In an article from 13 September London Times, about Tom Wilkinson, opening this week at the Royal Court in David Hare's "My Zinc Bed":
"I had luck, because The Full Monty made a lot of money and what advances your career is being good in hits. But I've been a moderately successful actor for more than 25 years, and that's not been an accident. I'm good at what I do, and I've got better. That's a commodity. Also, if somebody in LA needs a 50-year-old English character actor, and there's plenty of those roles around, then I'm up against five or ten people - Alan Rickman, Bob Hoskins, Jonathan Pryce."

I was looking around at the Virgin Mega site(www.virginmega.com) and discovered that they have a lot of the AR videos that are difficult to find in US online sites. Just search AR. They have TMD, MO(they list it as volume 1), Closetland, and Close My Eyes. I had to get all of these titles from Canada, or used at ebay. CME, Closetland, and TMD are only $9.99, and MO is $14.99. Mindy, I'm a little confused about the info on the CD single. Is it just an expanded version of the song that was used in the video? If not, and it is an Australian import will the video be in PAL format? I'd still want it but I was just wondering. Thanks letting us know about it!

Fausta: Once I get the In Demand CD single in the shop, I will take it home and make sure the video is The Video (the release sheet says it includes the Enhanced Video Track for In Demand. I'm assuming there is only The One). If it is I will certainly be able to help out all interested parties. But, like I said, some of you may have luck obtaining it locally. Suzanne, Thank you for taking the time to try and sort out the Fallen Angels confusion. I'll try to get it on eBay.
Last night I saw Closet Land for the first not knowing anything about it or what to expect. It came as a total surprise! Here was Alan, in yet another completely different role and brilliant as usual! I'm still in the discovery stages of his work which is very exciting! He switched from one personality to another effortlessly in this movie. I liked the format of the film being more like a play, since I've never seen him on stage. Although (to all you lucky ladies who have seen him in theatre) nothing can replace seeing him on stage I'm sure. I wish so much that I would have seen Dangerous Liaisons. I loved the film! Closet Land was disturbing but I enjoyed it.
P.S. He looks great in suspenders!

Hello! I've been in London last week and on Tuesday I was walking with some friends through the city. In one of all these hundredthousand shops I saw somebody looking like Alan Rickman, but I am not quite sure. Before I could ask this mysterious man was gone. So can somebody please tell me if Alan has been to London or England last week on the 12th September? Thanks Doreen

"Babitsky's War" was actually shown on Channel 4 on Monday 4th September. Unfortunately I missed it, so can't say as to whether Mr Rickman provided the narrative.
There isn't much detail regarding the program on the Channel 4 website, but if anyone wants to have a look at some links regarding Mr Babitsky, go to www.channel4.com, and then search for "True Stories" this should bring up a link for you

Thanks to all you kind people who have helped me find another copy of TMD. We are a nice group of people.
I have bought things from Ebay before, but didn't think to look there. After your suggestions, I did and found a sealed new copy for bidding. Well, I have and I will get it, I'm sure. Thanks again.
I wish I could find a copy of MO, I can rent it from my local video store, but it's not a very good copy and as I have only one VCR, I don't have the facilities to copy it. If I overcome this problem and can manage to copy it somehow, I will post here and let you all know.I wonder what a feeding frenzy of AR fans would look like? :))
Again thanks to you all who so kindly pointed me in the right direction.

Sue Zen, the Film Releases site also lists Blow Dry as opening on October 27. The official site still doesn't have a trailer ready or a change in date but hopefully they will make the adjustments next week. This has to be the most bizarre way of promoting a picture with major actors, a script by a writer with a major debut hit and a well-respected director. To paraphrase Tommy Laredo, "With all that make-up, I thought Miramax was supposed to be smart."

I received some information today stating that AR provided the narrative for a docu/film called Babitskys War, which premiered on UK television, Channel 4, on Monday Sept. 11th. Can anyone in the UK confirm this (did anybody see it?)?
Christine, the Fallen Angels (with Murder, Obliquely) cover that I own has no volume number anywhere on it. So I would assume it's Volume 1 (just a guess, though).

Re: the private life and Rima, the life-time partner. I seem to remember that in a number of interviews, AR strongly discourages questions and speculations about his private life and family. So I think the least we can do is respect the man's wishes.
Magda
Canada - Friday, September 15, 2000 at 11:02:07 (PDT)
I have to say that I totally agree with Fausta: I do not think that a public forum is any place for speculation about a person’s private life. I DO consider Ms. Horton a public figure, as she serves in a public capacity in Kensington and Chelsea. I think, therefore, that discussion of THAT aspect of her life is legitimate (although I can’t see how relevant that would be here). Anything beyond her political career, and Mr. Rickman’s theatrical one, as well, I think, is territory in which we would be considered most unwelcome. If Mr. Rickman or Ms. Horton choose to speak about their relationship in public, that’s their decision. But the public shouldn’t take any such discussion by them as an invitation to further public speculation. Now that’s not to say that I’m not curious about who he really is and what his life is like. I’m sure that most of us would love the opportunity to get to know him personally. But I DON’T know him, and most likely never shall, and so I have to come to terms with the fact that I don’t deserve to have that information. I apologize if this came off as rude to anyone, but it just seems like there is too much discussion of AR’s personal relationships and sexual preferences.
By the way, that video is unbelievable! Thank you to everyone who made it available! I’m always impressed by everyone’s quick work and thoughtfulness. Can’t wait to have it on cassette (my computer gets grumpy when I try to play it).
Jen <jelleebaby@yahoo.comfoo>

To me, it's not a matter whether or not Mr. Rickman's current/future/past meaningful other(s) is/are/would be a public person. My feeling is that, just because a person has a public life, their private life is not of the public domain.
We all have public lives: we have jobs and functions outside of our homes. Does that entitle the entire world -- people we have never met, and are unlikely to personally know well -- to discuss in a public forum our relationships, marriages, friendships, or everything else about us? To me, the answer is, most definitely, No.
And, and I said the other day, I'm glad I'm not a celebrity so people don't think my 25+ yr marriage belongs in the public domain.

For those trying to protect Rima Horton's privacy by not putting her picture here, just want to say that she's not a private person. She is in fact an elected official in the Royal Borough of Kensingto and Chelsea. Her picture has been posted on the Borough's Web site as long as the site has existed. Those passing the Town Hall on the King's Road can also see her picture outside along with all the other councillors. Don't know why she's "off limits" here.

Hello all. I haven't posted in a while, but I read every new message, every day.
I have a problem that I was hoping some kind fellow Rickmaniac can help me with. My beloved copy of 'Truly, Madly, Deeply' died a nasty death in the VCR a few days ago and no video store, either locally or on the web, has a copy for sale as the film is now out of print. To add insult to injury there are no used copies available in any video rental store in my area.
I was wondering if anyone had an extra copy or could get their hands on a used one in a video store in their area.
I will, of course pay the purchase cost and shipping cost, if some kind soul can help. Please E-mail me if you can get your hands on one for me.
Thanks so much

GIELGUD'S HAMLET. Ralph Berry.
... There has been a certain Castiglionean quality in the princes of Derek Jacobi and Kenneth Branagh, but that approach has fatal difficulties for most actors today. Ralph Fiennes' Hamlet -- the Danish Patient -- was not universally admired. Alan Rickman probably left it too late. Stephen Dillane's was memorable only for a full-frontal strip-tease. No heir to Sir John Gielgud is now apparent. ...

My sister hovered over me the whole time telling me her video producer ex-boyfriend always maintained you couldn't watch American videos on an Australian TV, I switched the VCR button to NTSC format (or whatever it is...), and voila! I had a PERFECT color image of the copyright info! A bit of fast forwarding revealed sound and all - and my sister was rendered speechless! Then she went off to call up her ex-boyfriend and tell him he was wrong, while I watched MO!!! I shall now be looking to buy the American video of Dark Harbor at eBay- party at my place, Sydney fans when I get it! Doesn't AR look good in MO?!

From 8 September Toronto Star, a review of the short plays (edited):
Do too little and it's boring & semi; do too much, and it's intrusive. Richard Eyre's take on Rockaby falls into the former category. [cut] The final effect is merely soporific.
Anthony Minghella's version of Play, on the other hand, does far more than it has to. Imprisoned from the neck down in large urns, a man, his wife and his mistress are compelled to tell the story of their unfortunate triangle over and over again. Minghella is fortunate in his cast, for Alan Rickman, Juliet Stephenson and Kristin Scott-Thomas all act at a virtuoso level. The problem lies in Minghella's direction, which draws attention to itself with its MTV editing, and three perfect performances nearly get lost in a sea of window-dressing.

Second, on the subject of what Rima looks like--go to the top of this page, click on FAQ, then scroll down to the first answer and click on her name. A wonderful color photo will appear. And finally, going back to the TMD discussion from a couple of weeks ago--I thought the guys were a bunch of benevolent poltergeists, with Jamie as the ringleader. Great site. Thanks! Cheers, Lyn

Sally: thank you so much! I feel so much better. I was afraid it was my chaos field operating, the one that messes up the checkout computer in whatever supermarket line I'm in, that sort of thing. Doesn't help us much viewing, though...I'm still fiddling with it, I'll let you know if it ever works. Gilda: I have Netscape and got the gibberish in the browser window; if you right-click the download link and Save As (or Save to or something), it'll download it to your desired location. This, I can do; I've successfully downloaded it about six times now (although they don't work.....).

I haven't been online for a couple of days and saw someone asking about what Rima looks like. I have a couple of pictures that I took off the TV from the Venice festival, and while they're not perfectly clear, they're good enough. If anybody wants to see them, please email me and don't expect anything back immediately because I won't be on again til Saturday and then not for a week. If you can be patient, you can have the picture.

BTW, thanks to everyone for all the latest news; it's really great. For those of you with RealPlayer problems: I think RealPlayer initially was meant for viewing only on the site where it resides; QuickTime video is first downloadable and played from your drive. It's a wonder that Raffaella allowed for an actual download to be played in RealPlayer (you're so wonderful, Raff). I was successful at having it d/l and play, so I'd like to share (esp. for Mac users): Get the RealPlayer 8 basic software (as Claire said) if you have a newer Mac running 8.6 or later and load it. Go to Raffaella's site and download the 4 MB file. On my Netscape browser window, I got a whole bunch of characters on the screen over a gray background. Let the file completely download (you'll see the progress on the bottom of the window in percentage). Then go to the file menu and save the file to your hard drive. Open RealPlayer 8, then open the id.rm file through it. It should play just fine. I don't know if this system works for PCs. If you have any problems, give me a holler.

(delurking) Hi, everyone! Haven't posted in a while but keep up as much as I can. Just a heads up that Bob Roberts is coming out on DVD for $17.99. I understand the release date was 9/12, but stock isn't in yet. Details say it will have the same stuff the special-edition laserdisc has: audio commentary, cast/crew bios, behind-the-scenes footage, prod. notes, photo gallery (as I put up on my page) and a trailer. I can't remember if my laser has the trailer, though. Nonetheless, a good buy for all that stuff! (relurking)

Amanda - DON'T TELL ME THAT!!!! I finally decided that to really enjoy the Texas clip, I better download it onto my home computer (its currently backed up in 3 locations on my work computer...). I got the same message as you. When I asked it to connect to RealPlayer online to see what the error message was, I got a web page telling me Real Player so rarely get that error, you'll have to email them about it. Honestly! If you are going to take the time to put together a web page with that message, how much longer can it take to add a few lines on how to fix it??? Anyway, I then started to download Realplayer 8, and got a third of the way through when I lost my connection and decided that rather than pursue it, I would load it off a CD I had at work. Now that may not work??? Anyway, I'll let you know, because if it does (...) it may be worth going out and buying a computer magazine of the CD Rom on it. As said, will let you know...

Argh. I am going into an Official Sulk. I figured out how to download the video so that it wasn't a page of gobbledegook. But I got a "General Error" message when I tried to play it. So I spent half an hour in front of the computer last night twiddling my thumbs downloading RealPlayer 8 (I had 7). It still wouldn't play. So I re-downloaded the video clip, thinking perhaps it had to be downloaded after my computer knew it had RealPlayer 8. And it STILL doesn't play. Same General Error message. I am Officially. Giving. Up. And. Sulking. AAAANNNNNDDDD---somebody stole, from the video rental place, the only copy of "Mesmer" that I have been able to find, BEFORE I got to see it. Poop. Poop. Poop. I was in such a hurry to download it that I didn't see who owned the site--is this the band's or a big-time fan's? Somebody needs to be congratulated for giving us something to slobber over! Joanne - purty simple (assuming you are on a PC computer and not a Mac):
1. Double Click on the My Computer on your desktop
2. Double click on the C-drive icon
3. Double click on the Windows folder. Scroll down the infinite amount of folders Microsoft thinks you should have, and near the bottom, you will find the folder labelled, "Temporary Internet Folder".
It is important to drag the file, id[1].rm it out into some other folder (I tend to store all my downloaded AR stuff in the My Documents Folder) as your browser will delete all files in that folder on a regular basis... But, you have about 20 days to do it in (unless you changed the defaults!)

Fausta, hopefully you won't have to wait that long. I still plan to make Videograms, etc. The more options the better, right? Besides, you can never have to much of AR on your computer! :-)
Thanks, Claire, for the RealPlayer tips! Today I was able to play the entire thing without stopping! Didn't have time to try playing it from a saved file in a different folder, though. Hopefully tomorrow. Again, I did this on a different computer. RealPlayer on *my* PC still isn't working (yes, even after upgrading it).

Real Player and In Demand Hints to get it working - so sorry this is a long post.
I gave an idea of the problems in my post yesterday. This is a massive file 200 times larger than one of the great photos enlarged on the same site. Download it first, if you can't do that it will not run anyway. You are storing it on your computer, to play repeatedly, not streaming it from a site each time you load. The speed it downloads depends on the speed of your Internet connection, took me 40 minutes. If you can do that great! Now close the computer down and completely reboot, do not reopen anything else except Windows Explorer.
The clip takes up a large amount of the working memory, the RAM, so if you have say 32RAM machine, it cannot cope with too many other applications open at the same time, especially an internet browser.
Find the file in your Windows, Internet Temporary folder - it's called id[1].rm, double clicking on the latest modified date will bring it to near the top of the pile. It should have the Real Player blue oval symbol next to it and the size of the file 4,212KB. If it is not that size you will need to download again.
Download basic Real Player from link that Sally has posted if you do not have the blue symbol. Alternatively if you know you have Real Player installed but no symbol you need to associate the .rm file to Real Player (look in Help under Associate files.)
Running programs direct from Internet Temporary destablises my computer (it freezes and crashes) so I copied it to another place, anywhere you like so long as you remember where you left it to put in a shortcut later. Once in its new home a double click from Windows Explorer, a short pause as Real Player opened and then it ran, and still runs when I open it the same way this morning. Saving as Target may shortcut this process, but check via Windows Explorer that you have everything and it is correctly associated.
Technical note if the clip stops. I had to change the Real Player View preferences to buffer only 60 seconds not the whole clip - you can change that on the Real Player screen itself under View, Preferences, Connection. If you already have that, try buffer up to limit of memory.
The clip sample is the WHOLE VIDEO, minus a few seconds - he goes up the steps of the building at the end. Stick with it ... will be worth the frustration!

Solving the real Rima Horton picture problem for owners of *that* book.
If the lady is standing to the right of the photo, as per the original hardback, that is NOT Rima despite the text. If she is standing to the left of the photo, as per the later amended paperback edition, that IS Rima.
I could clarify by posting a picture on CPP but the lady is a private individual and I prefer to leave it that way. Check the book out at the local library if you do not own a copy.

And, er... Casting our minds back to an issue discussed earlier about "is that Rima Horton or Alan Rickman's sister, Sheila in the photo?" I have to admit, I haven't checked out the picture on KelClancy's site, but I do know I checked Suzanne's (the one who owns this guestbook) and it said Sheila. When I went to my 'Unauthorised Biography of Alan Rickman" book, it said that same picture was Rima Horton. Just throwing in my 2c worth!

Wow! What a bummer you people having so much trouble! I get to see the entire video - full lenth from MTV summer starter to MTV summer ender. Its a little bit stacatto, but I'm assuming that is the Real Player compressing it. Still, its excellent quality. It also downloaded to my computer and I have copied it to 2 other locations and it works fine in both of them, so... Now I am worried about what will happen when I go home and download it onto my home computer...
Are you sure it isn't just a matter of upgrading Real Player? This link is the user-friendly way to upgrade, or you can go to the Real Player website and download the latest player. I just mention this in case the problem is just that you have an old Real Player. Other than that, I can't help - I'm quite useless with Real Player - it plays my Chilean radio station, the GQ interview and Texas, so I'm happy with it....

Aakkkk! Fausta, looks like we're in the same boat. My RealPlayer isn't working! My computer has already crashed twice while trying to play the video. I finally went in search of somebody else's computer to to play it on (hey, desperate circumstances call for desperate measures!), where it works off and on until it stops completely after three minutes. It was a fairly fast computer (500 MHz) with vr 8 RealPlayer, so I think it must be the slow Internet connection causing the problem.
A-M, I saved it by right clicking on the link, and it downloaded the entire 4.11mb. But I, like Darlene, get an error message when trying to play the saved file. For those of you having no problems, the link says "clip sample," so how much of the video actually plays?
Anyway, the pics and what I saw of the video are fantastic! Thank you!!!
I must figure out what's wrong with my RealPlayer so I can play it on *my* computer!

Five weeks away from a computer and what do I find on my return? AR doing the tango in a video that I can actually see right away!! If I hadn't been sitting down I'd have fallen. It woke me right up after my 1300 mile drive. I actually have an earlier Texas album that my store got as a promo. Have to say I was never all that impressed. Nice pop but not amazing. The new song is really very nice though. The video may be swaying my opinion--just a little anyway!!!He is just so damn sexy.
Wouldn't it be a lovely tie in if "Blow Dry" actually opens on time? Crossing all my bita and pieces in hope.

Darlene here,
I have aol with Real Player. What I did was I went to the site let the file download and when Real Player came on with the video I saved it in my Fav's file. Then when I go to it on that file an error or unable to find page comes up but I can hear the music. I close the page and right behind it is the real player showing the video, and I can play as many times as I want while the window is open. I don't know if this will help anyone, but maybe you can try it. And yes it depends on how fast you computer is weather or not you get that stop moion kind of thing with the pictures. Your not actually seeing a Video but more a seirse of pic's going so fast that it seems like a real moving video sort of like a cartoon. Love and Peace Darlene

So correct, Sue Zen... Article from L.A. Times:
SEPT. 22
Blow Dry
Comedy Miramax
With: Rachael Leigh Cook, Natasha Richardson, Alan Rickman, Hugh Bonneville, Rachel Griffiths, Josh Hartnet.
The idea: Skullduggery at a national hairdressing contest inspires a retired champion (Rickman) to form an alliance with his estranged wife (Richardson) and her new partner (Griffiths). Paddy Breathnach.
So?: Interesting cast might discover surprises in familiar territory

From my local newspaper: the independent film-maker Robert Altman will start auditions in November for his new movie, "Gosford Park," which will "explore the end of an era of English upper-class life." He's looking for "terrific actors willing to work for a pittance." Sounds like a perfect description of Mr. Alan Rickman - who has said that he admires Altman greatly. Fingers crossed, everyone!

One cannot deny that "Play" is thought-provoking, which is probably the best compliment one can pay to the creative agents involved.
Fly across the country I did. Mercifully, and for which she earns my undying gratitude, it was Gail who did the time in the ticket line.
"Play" is like "Closetland" only in being a virtuoso performance. One either enjoys Beckett-style theater, or one does not. I came of age on the stuff in the 1960s, and do. It is miles removed from usual film fare. I found Minghella's cinematic insertions (film leaders, whirring cameras) served only to remind me this was a film rendition, not live theater. Although the lines were repetitious--virtually the entire play repeats from the beginning--they were delivered differently each time. The most obvious were the two versions of the 'boating on the lake' part from Rickman's character. It was very slowly stated the first time through, not so deliberate the second time. The horror of the piece is that these people are doomed to perseverate for eternity on these particular ill-advised personal choices, remaining side by side, never interacting.
--Those unhappy with Mr. Rickman's lower dentition will not enjoy this piece.
--I found Ms. Scott Thomas difficult to understand in parts--hers was the most staccato delivery.
--Having read the play, it still took a bit to figure out which was wife, which was lover.
--Looked to me like these characters were mouldering, not ash-covered. I think they are in burial urns, like the South American vasija de barro.
I'm truly looking forward to seeing it again. Mr. Rickman is such a unique thespian talent, with such a singular voice, that it seems always time well spent, rewarding in some sense or another to one's soul.

Re: the premiere of Blow Dry. There are lots of places where Blow Dry is still listed as opening on September 22. Entertainment Weekly included it in their Upcoming Films issue some time ago. The question is, why is Miramax changing their minds now?
I don't buy the "he's not a big enough draw" argument. You don't cast somebody, shoot the movie, pay everyone's salary, schedule the opening and then make that kind of a decision. It's just too weird.

Thanks, everyone, for your reviews! Yes, sounds very interesting and provocative, to say the least. And I'm enjoying the discussion. I kind of doubt I will ever get to see it in a theater deep in the heart of Texas, but I'm certainly looking forward to watching it on video.

Georgiana: "In the theater, Beckett's vision was that each speaker would be highlighted with spotlights. ... The rapid succession of close-ups were a film director's substitute for this technique."
Lee: I get it. Interesting. Thanks.
G: "Unlike you, I thought the film leaders, which occurred multiple times throughout the film, along with sounds of whirring lenses, were quite effective in shifting focus."
L: For me, the emotional power of the film came from realizing all these people were spending eternity hopelessly trapped in their own messed-up personal lives, repeating the painful moments over and over. That would be a good definition of hell for me. The effects (leaders, camera noise) that pointed out that "this is a movie" made the repetition into a consequence of the medium -- oh, we're just looking at a film loop, the characters aren't really re-living things again and again -- and so for me the effects negated the emotional power of the movie.
G: "I think only such gifted actors could pull this off well ... The vision would give a would-be adulterer pause."
L: I agree ... certainly gave me pause.
G: "And, yes, the hiccups are in the play!"
L: AR did his usual excellent job with this part. It would be really easy to make a laughingstock of yourself hiccupping in an urn. But he didn't.
Rafaella: :"BTW, my best pal, who's a film student, says that strange colour effect was made with a blue filter."
L: Oh good, I thought it was some kind of horrible makeup. I was feeling sorry for them all not because they were dead but because they were blue.
A rickman admirer: "Is this like Closetland, which could be described as interesting, provocative and meaningful, but not the sort of movie one would "enjoy" exactly?"
L: Never saw Closetland tho my Rickman-admiring sister-in-law says it's great. It sounds too creepy for me to be able to watch without having bad dreams. Re enjoyment: I enjoy something interesting, provocative and meaningful as long as its intelligently done, and Play was.
are: "especially if one had to ... stand in line for three hours."
L: Standing in line is an unfortunate fact of life at the film festival. (That's the Toronto International Film Festival for those of you who aren't here. Here, it's just "the film festival".) I know folks who get the catalog as soon as it comes out, would camp in line on the sidewalk to get first choice at tickets, and then still stand in one line after another for two weeks to see one film after another. Not me, uh uh. It is a testimony to my admiration for AR that I actually took my body downtown and shuffled through the hall in an underground shopping plaza for two and a half hours to get a ticket to see this 15-minute film.
I must be nuts.

who is annoying? People in urns talking in monotones and hiccuping would be one of my definitions of annoyance!!!!!!! Although artistically speaking, the play may very effectively capture the emotional tone of "hell", I don't think going to hell would be very entertaining or enjoyable, especially if one had to pay for a ticket, fly on a plane, and stand in line for three hours. Is this like Closetland, which could be described as interesting, provocative and meaningful, but not the sort of movie one would "enjoy" exactly?

Thank you to everyone who posted a review of "Play"! I's interesting to read what people thought about it. BTW, my best pal, who's a film student, says that strange colour effect was made with a blue filter (sp?). To the prophane (little old me :-) ) it looks like b/w, but in fact -as Georgiana noted- there's some pink.

Ann, your post uploaded while I was composing mine--was very funny to read it! Yes, I thought it was worth the trip. But, then, I thought it was worth flying to London in June for 6 minutes at the Royal Court. Lee, I read the play in May or June shortly after we found he was filming "Play," and it has specific stage directions. In the theater, Beckett's vision was that each speaker would be highlighted with spotlights. Since theater is always a full shot, this would be a workable technique. The rapid succession of close-ups were a film director's substitute for this technique. Unlike you, I thought the film leaders, which occurred multiple times throughout the film, along with sounds of whirring lenses, were quite effective in shifting focus. The rapid delivery is also specified in the stage directions, as is the monotone delivery. I think only such gifted actors could pull this off well, and I agree it was the best of the lot shown (although I quite liked "What Where" also). I especially liked all the multiple murmurings of all those 'urned' at the end of the film. The vision would give a would-be adulterer pause
And, yes, the hiccups are in the play!

Well, I see we were out in force today at Play in beautiful downtown Toronto, in the lovely but insanely over-air-conditioned Elgin Theatre. Here are my thoughts on the film, essentially uninformed, since I've never been attracted to Beckett and today didn't do anything to change that.
Play was by far the best of the five shorts shown and judging by the volume of applause at the end, the audience agreed. The extreme speed of the actors' speech and the quick cutting gave it real momentum and tension, two qualities I've never associated with Mr. Beckett. Not knowing what the stage directions are, (Georgiana? you seem to know about this) I'm assuming the film direction was to compensate for what would otherwise have been a bit of a snore, since all we see are three heads sticking out of large urns, doing nothing but talk.
AR rating: I found it hard to separate him from the film as a whole. It was all really excellent. The two women (Kristen Scott-Thomas and Juliet Stevenson) had I thought more lines and played more interesting characters. (Could be that's because I'm female and would identify with their feelings as wife and mistress.) I thought the male character existed largely as a foil for the two women. Stevenson gets my award for the most punch. Bottom line: even if you aren't an AR fan, Play is worth seeing because of her performance. I'd recommend this to my friends.
If you're looking for AR as romantic hero, this is not the film for you. (Are we following this here? In his previous outing, he plays the Goat-Headed Creature, and in this latest one, he's dead, all over steely blue, and stuck down with fake ashes. I really suspect that after Sense and Sensibility he made a conscious decision not to do leading-man roles any more. As I recall he's not fond of fans going all drooly over him. He seems to be choosing roles that emphatically make that impossible.)
Incidentally there are several closeups of just his mouth. So if you are really interested in the state of his teeth, which has been the subject of some discussion in the GB in the past, here's your chance.
Putting on my film critics hat, I can't understand why Minghella included the obvious references to the fact that "this is a movie." Georgiana noted the rapid changes in focus; one could also hear the sound the camera makes when when doing this. The film leaders appear at the start, and then half way through, before the entire dialogue is repeated. I found them obtrusive and distracting. On the one hand the movie is a powerful portrayal of a bleak afterlife, in which an entire graveyard of people obsesses, ruminates, rationalizes, and justifies their lives, without any evident salvation or healing. They get to the end of their stories and then they start over, and they do this until the end of time. On the other hand, the leaders make the whole effort seem like a just a tape loop, and I found them and the camera effects distancing. I'd like to know more about the why these choices were made.
Are the hiccups in the play as written? I recall the gentleman who spoke at the beginning said the directors weren't permitted to cut a word, so perhaps Beckett wrote the hiccups. What is the suggestion here? Hell is bad enough but real hell would be hell plus hiccups?
To sum up, I spent two and a half hours in line to buy a ticket to this, and it was worth it. Thanks to the GB for making it possible for me to know about it.
If you're interested in the Beckett on Film project, note that two films in the project by Canadian directors will appear at the same theatre later in the week. The first is Krapp's Last Tape directed by Atom Egoyan (Calendar, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter.) The second is Happy Days directed by Patricia Rozema (I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, Mansfield Park.)

I can only add one thing to Georgiana's comments on 'Play' - what it conjured up for me was Beckett's idea of Purgatory, or even Hell. Every now and then the camera would pull back momentarily, and you would see that the three urns inhabited a larger area of similar urns in a graveyard-like landscape. At the close, it became clearer that all these urns had their inhabitants who were simultaneously endlessly reliving key portions of their lives. A truly chilling foretaste, if that's what the Hereafter turns out to be. As Georgiana said, we found plenty to admire in three of the five productions. One (Rockaby) was somewhat boring, another, Words in Theatre I (or was it Theatre in Words?)was what might be called a 'traditional' Irish staging. We saw John Gielgud in his last, if wordless, performance in Catastrophe, with Pinter as one of the two speaking actors. One of the producers of the Beckett series, who introduced the films, noted that this playlet was directed by David Mamet, and commented on the continuity as playwrights of Beckett to Pinter to Mamet.
Ann - we enjoyed our brief conversation with you in the lineup. If you didn't feel that Play was worth Georgiana's flight from Seattle, I hope that at least you felt it was worth your three-hour lineup to get the ticket. I certainly did.

Saw the first showing of the five short Beckett filmed Beckett plays this afternoon (after being up all night on the 'red eye' from Vancouver--why *do* they think they need to feed you at 2 am?). Sorry, Raffaella, but it was not filmed in black and white--only seems so because of the preponderance of blue-black in the scenery, settings, urns, and, alas, moldy make-up. But the edges of eyelids and what is seem of gums are clearly pink. It was an actor's tour de force, with punctuated staccato delivery from the three, side by side in their urns, with Rickman a bit in front of the other two. Many close-ups, many profiles. No spotlight, as specified in the stage directions. Rapid shifts of focus. Parts were very amusing ("Lipton"), with the verbal 'painting' of boating slowed for impact. Only three such fine thespians, expertly directed, could have pulled it off so well. Effective technique of film leaders scattered throughout. It is a very exciting piece to see. Whereas some of the other short plays shown had an awkward moment or two (we quite liked three of the five), this one sang. Will look forward to the promised release next year (not to mention another viewing on Tuesday).

Not every movie is a big studio blockbuster. Here are some of the many independent and foreign films due before year's end.
"BLOW DRY" (sept.22);The British National Hair Championship pits estranged couple (Alan Rickman, Natasha Richardson) against each other.
So far that's all I've seen I have to go into NYC today, and I will check out the mags' and weekend paper. And, there's always the Sunday New York Times.
Lets keep our fingers crossed everybody. Well, better cross you legs and anything else too. (Smile)

Squawk! Don't hide those picture of AR in the Texas video too deeply for another week, Claire! I just sent everyone on my newsletter list off to your website to check out the pictures!!!! Other than that, luv-ley pictures of AR in Robin Hood... I don't care what all you people out there think about AR with blonde hair, I think he looks best with dark hair as in his earlier films (and after all, it was the shock of discovering after Dogma that he was blonde that introduced me to this talented actor!
Amanda - I'm with you... I've asked around on KelClancy's website, but obviously, nothing has been fixed on that home page. The only way I keep accidently getting into that site is when a page has been indexed in a search engine. Very frustrating!
Thanks, Barbara - not quite sure what I have done, but if its just the keeping an eye out for AR's films down here, I'm just a huge film buff and in strong competition with a friend in Denver (who does have the unfortunate advantage that most films are shown there before here... But I like to keep up on the gossip when emailing him...). Its just become 2nd nature to keep an eye out for any of AR's work! I'm asking film buffs around here about the Sam Beckett films, but suspect that the film festivals are so far off.. Maybe I should start lobbying the Palace cinema's...

Hmmmm...details about Play. It's in black and white; some nasty persons kept on saying it looked like a Calvin Klein commercial, but in general people seemed to appreciate it. The three characters are talking, but not to each other, they're talking to themselves, telling their version of the story. Lots of close ups, on their mouth and eyes. I loved this short film because Minghella succeeded in making Beckett dynamic. I mean, Becett's plays, or at least some of them, might be a bit static: the characters don't move (see Happy Days), they just talk. Yet Minghella, with his rapid camera movements, made Play a lively, fascinating experience. Hope we will see it on DVD. Love from Raffaella

In the next photo, the woman on his right in a V-neck dress is not Rima, but has been identified elsewhere as AR's sister. Well, in the "mixed signals" category, MSNBC came out with its list of fall films and guess what was there:
"In a related comedy, “Blow Dry” (Sept. 22), Alan Rickman is a stylist after the title of England’s National Hairdressing Championship. The script represents another fresh and fertile field for Simon Beaufoy, whose script for “The Full Monty” was Oscar-nominated."
A plea is hereby sent out to the media gods for some kind of consistency in reporting.

From 4 September Canberra Times' review of "Judas Kiss":
ONE OF the many pleasures of this film is seeing British actors Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman together, playing a shambly pair of New Orleans cops who have the full measure of each other, but still enjoy each other anyway.[cut]
Thompson plays Sadie Hawkins, a scruffy detective who's always dipping into packets of munchies and reading Jim Thompson crime novels on the job. Rickman, as Dave Friedman, has a dishevelled air, too, and he'd rather be home reading. This unlikely couple share a bit of banter about their driving, their relative hierarchy in the force (she is his superior) and the sexual chemistry between them and then get on with the job.[cut]
Rickman and Thompson are no Bogart and Bacall here, though I wanted them to be. There's little tension or chemistry and it's really Coco' s story (Gugino, also film co-producer, is terrific).

To "A Rickman Admirer in the USA": That was a really wonderful part in Dark Harbor when Alan spoke about "putting in the time". He wasn't acting. He was speaking from experience. It's certainly true that years spent together through thick and thin creates a bond that no one can take away from you (especially if you have children) but people have been known to grow apart. I mean just his fame alone could put a wedge between them. Maybe when Alan's with Rima he can truly relax and forget the pressures of his career because she's not involved in it. She seems to want to keep her distance. We don't see her on his arm very often. I think it's wonderful that they've remained together through his rise to fame with all its distractions. I'd hate to see him with some Hollywood Bimbo splashed all over the magazine stands!

Absense makes the heart grow fonder, or so they say---if you have seen Dark Harbor, listen to the "youve got to put in the time" scene-any of us who are happily married or unmarried to a wonderful person in a long time relationship can understand his reluctance to succumb to the pleasures of "sin for a season". I think that she is a wonderful person with a very fine mind and she makes him laugh. The way to a man's heart is not thru his stomach, although good cooking does help, but the ability to make him laugh and have fun--and no, I am not Rima and I don't know her, but I do admire her too. Cheers

To "A Rickman Admirer from the USA": I can't help but think that one day AR will meet someone else who he will not be able to resist, who is in the movie/theatrical milieu. Look at all the beautiful actresses he meets! Honestly, I think if I were Ms. Horton I would feel a little insecure. It's hard to imagine that after all those years together they still don't even live in the same house!!!

Why use fictitious names? It's fun, as long as one doesn't use the opportunity to someone else's disadvantage. One would hope that an anonymous compliment or well thought out opinion would not be taken amiss. Well, there's no doubt I use psuedonyms when I have no idea what sort of environment I am in on the net! True, this guest book reveals itself as a rather warm and cosy place, but there are plenty of other places on the net where I would rather people did not know I was walking, if nothing else for fear of being exploited in the marketing stakes. Just depends. With privacy becoming increasingly scarce, I can understand some people wishing to remain anonymous or mysterious - because somewhere, Big Brother has their details...

Gail, You could be right on you're point about Miramax waiting to see the out come of certain movie chains. Here in NY alot to the people seem to be going to the Sony Imax theathers and theather who accept passes. There was a big problem with sony for awhile because the company has free passes to see movies but the indiviual theathers where telling the patrons that they couldn't use the passes for certain movies. Of course they were the movies that every one wanted to see. From what I can gather the employees and management had a meeting about this and sony got on the theathers and now you can see what you want except the Imax in which you need a special pass.
I also asked my brothers best friend (who works for sony) If he would find our anything for them about BD. I will inform you as soon as he gives me any news.
As for my other friend, says keep your fingers crossed, they may just want to wait until after the rash of really dumb holiday crap has passed. He says they may not want AR to have to go head to head with Keanu Reeves as a Seial Killer...
Can you say joy and yummies...I knew you could. As if Duh...KR could even come close to AR. Love and Peace Your Fellow Alan Rickman Fan Darlene a.k.a. "D" PS. Why is it so damn hard to find Barchester Cronicals and Benafactors in the US. I find that rather madding. I would love to have copies of both.

Re: Galaxy Quest "junior novelization." As it happens, I'm in the middle of reading it myself. I have the regular novel as well, but decided to start with this one; Yes, the pictures attracted me! :-) Here's a few of them:
Following on Magda's comment about the theatre owners - this is just a wild theory, but does anyone know which chain usually shows Miramax movies? In fact, could one of the insiders let me know if companies such as Miramax usually favour one chain or another? I understand that the Cineplex-Odeon chain is in financial difficulties - may even be in or near Chapter 11 (bankrupcty protection) in the States. Could Miramax be waiting to see how that pans out? And, on a totally different vein - can anyone tell why people like to use fictitious names, or other aliases, at all on guest books such as this one? Really - this is a genuine question! I've always used my own and, particularly on this site, can see no reason to do otherwise.

Who's a paid up member of the Hollywood Reporter? There are 2 articles there that might be worth seeing if anything is buried in them - one on Miramax and who they plan to step up distribution of some movies after a lack-lustre summer (apart from Scary Movie) - and then cut to the 'full story 'link before going on to describe what they were planning, and an article on the Venice Film Festival - just wondering if there was anything on Play in there... I see Rafaella has already seen it!

RE: Blow Dry Openning Date,
Spoke to my friend who works in SOHO this afternoon. He said that he heard that Miramax was unsure weather this was a good time to release BD because of the wave of end of summer films that are about to hit the movie theathers. But, he said he did know it that was the real deal or not. He said he would keep an ear out for us and Like I said l'll keep everybody posted on any news we get here in NY. I complimented the writers of both FOF sites for their writing skills, defended a heartbroken member who was reaching out to this chat in times of trouble, informed a few why unsolicited manuscripts sent directly to stars are seen as potential plagiarism suits, and wanted to talk AR films with Magda, who said I can't use my nickname since day one online here. The header said you'd love for people to sign the guestbook, but I can understand why you want to guard it from the off-topic, which was not clear at first. As for the "no porn" tag in FOF, that mysteriously disappeared last year while I was in the hospital (I wonder how, too!). :-) However, the rule *does* still stand, as Mary Anne so tactfully states. That being said, if a racing heart is what you seek, FOF will likely provide. For there are ways of writing juicealy without being graphic, as our wonderfully gifted writers know. Romance, adventure, suspense, humor -- you'll find it in Flights of Fancy!
End of disclaimer/commercial. :-)

Is FOF juicy? Yes, I'd say so. But it may depend on what gets your juices flowing . . . I saw the GQ novel two days ago as well--it does have some photos in the middle, including at least two of AR, in poses which are familiar to us. And yes, the lines are amusing to read, since the writer uses shortcuts like "so and so was not amused" and the like. Harry Potter it's not.
If you're looking for a bookstore purchase, an audiobook of The Little Prince is said to be newly available, at least in the UK, read by Kenneth Branagh. My local Borders had *no* clue whatsoever about it, though. Finally, many thanks to Georgiana and Suzanne, even from us Mac-users.

Amazing AR times, indeed.
Amusing Rickman-related incident during my trip to Barnes & Noble this evening: I was browsing the children's section and there was a "Junior Novelization" of Galaxy Quest! Yes, they had written up the film story for an audience of, let us say, ages 10-14 or thereabouts. It was fun to go through and read that version of some of my favourite scenes from the film, and there was a photo section included of scenes from the film. For those of you who are into "collectibles," it would be an interesting item to own. (Not as much in demand as the Sheriff of Nottingham action figure, true, but you take these things as you find them. *grin*)
Speaking of the Sheriff, that was my first viewing of an AR performance, if memory serves. I can't remember whether I saw him first in RH:POT or DH, but it was as a villain that he caught my attention--which was why Colonel Brandon was such an utter and very pleasant surprise. *siiiigh* As to the inquiry about Flights of Fancy next door and whether the stories are "juicy," there is an understanding of "no porn" (though SOMEHOW that tag was removed from the page--I wonder how?) and the narratives range from "PG-13" over into "sort of R." If that's not clear enough, step next door and read to your heart's content. And feel free to ask questions. *chuckle*
For those who know that I am usually incapable of being in a bookstore without buying a book, tonight's purchase was by Mike Thaler--The Librarian from the Black Lagoon. But I'll probably go back and get the GQ book, too. ;-)

Stararchive considers the ICM address as valid. Seems like the turn around time has improved because until recently, they had some person who had verified it and it took 5 months to get the autograph. However, they have a later person who verified that it was the one, and it only took about 2 weeks as well, and they didn't even use the SAE... They were impressed...
FYI - star archive is THE website for autograph hunters, and I have a friend who is a huge autograph hunter and practically worships this website, and he gets LOTS of autographed stuff from the stars. He has sent something to Alan Rickman recently at the ICM address (getting fed up with me saying, "I'm gunna, but worry about my lack of address stability" - trust me, 5 months is a bit long when you move every 6 months...). I can certainly let you now how that goes...

Mindy, is the ICM address you have different than the address listed in the FAQ? Claudia and I have been trying to verify it, so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Re: TEXAS video. Georgiana is correct. As soon as I have the video in my hands (thanks to Claire and Georgiana!), you can be sure I'll make & post a Videogram the same day.
As for Mac users, I'll do my best to make an AVI, depending on the length of the video. So far, I've had no success making an .avi file over two minutes long. However, I could split the video into two AVIs, if that's what it takes.

Hi all: If anyone is interested in getting AR's autograph, you can try writing to him in care of his agent/management ICM. I wrote a very short, sincere note saying how much I enjoyed his work and how much an autograph would mean to me. Within two weeks I received a photograph of AR, with a personalized "Best Wishes" and a lovely note from a Ms. Parker (the person who handles his mail, I suppose). Judging by the AR autographs I've seen elsewhere, this seems like the real thing. I have read that he is more than happy to sign. If you would like ICM's address, please send me an email and I'll be happy to comply!

If you want to see Kevin Costner at his best, watch "Field of Dreams" (the screenplay is based on a book by Canadian author, W.P. Kinsella), "Bull Durham" and "The Untouchables", even though the last is not everyone's cup of tea. When he decides to display a sense of humour, he can be a very engaging actor.
Magda
Canada - Wednesday, September 06, 2000 at 14:07:10 (PDT)
I'd like to say something about Costner too. In Silverado and Fandango, he made me laugh and I appreciated him for that. Dances With Wolves was a masterpiece of beautiful cinematography, some very special characters and very good direction. And I find RHPOT very watchable because it "feels good"... but that could be partially due to director Kevin Reynolds (who also directed Fandango) and the other good actors in it. What I RESENT Costner for is stealing some of Alan's best scenes, in which he "really shined" (a quote from Reynolds), from us; and thus I've never been able to look at him the same way since then.

Hi Cindie! Thanks for answering. I did actually like Costner in Bull Durham too. (My boyfriend's all time favorite movie.) I haven't really checked out the Flights of Fancy pages. If I'm not mistaken, it's stories using characters that AR has played? Do they get juicy at all? You are so right about the Colonel.

Christine, Hi there! I agree AR is wonderful to watch in RHPOT. Kevin Costner is o.k.--I enjoyed him in Bull Durham and some other things but Alan is such a force in that movie and Costner is so ineffective the contrast is all too apparent. You might want to check out the Flights of Fancy page if you haven't already done so. Magda has written some terrific stuff for George. S&S is still my favorite. Colonel Brandon is hard to beat.

Hi everyone! I've been reading this guest book daily for a while now and enjoy it so much. You ladies that come up with all the news and photographs are just amazing. I just saw Dark Harbor and Close my Eyes on the weekend and loved Alan in both. But to me he was most amazing in Robin Hood! That was the first time I saw him and he stuck in my mind from that day on. Not only was his acting fabulous but he was SOOOO SEXY!!! (I couldn't believe how horrible Costner was). No wonder he wanted to cut Alan out of the film as much as possible. My next favorite is S & S and third AABA. I would like to know who out there likes them in the same order as I do. I'm dying to see the Texas music video but don't know how I ever will. It's just impossible for me to be in front of the tube all the time waiting for it. (I would if I could)Do they sell CDs of music videos for the computer? Or will we be able to download it eventually? I can't miss it! I'm glad Naomi Campbell didn't get the part of the stripper/girlfriend! I don't see Alan with her at all! I've ordered the tapes of The Return of the Native. Just the thought of listening to his beautiful voice for 12 tapes no less! So as you can see I'm also really turned on by our dear friend. Bye for now!

It sounds as though many are eagerly awaiting a sighting of the Texas video clip - and yes I agree Sally that the music video shows in Australia are pretty ordinary. However, if any Aussies are prepared to stay up one Saturday night and watch "Rage" (music video show (ABC) old Channel 2) the ABC web site at least has a link that lists all the new releases to be shown on their next show (no times given unfortunately). At least you would know it is going to be shown sometime that Sat night/Sun morning and by the sound of it, it will be well worth staying up for.

Oh WOW!!! As I was jotting down that last missive, Radio 1 was playing Texas's new song (only I didn't know it) - and at the end, the DJ mentioned Sharlene in the new Texas video and her smooching with AR!!!! He went on to babble some of AR's credits. Then the DJ reckoned Sharlene was smooching with someone else in their previous video, and ergo, she's making a habit of going up to famous people and asking them to be in her video! AAAGGHHH! Now, I need to find an internet radio which broadcasts video clips simultaneously and live... Guess thats a way off. Too intellectual for me, Magda... Although I enjoyed CBC when I lived in Canada (and became one of those annoying fonts of trivia...), at work, I need music with a beat as I can't listen and focus on the mind-numbing tedious stuff I have to do... Must say, it is fun - start the day with the evening in London, then when it goes downhill, spend the evening in Chile (spent time there and they have a great radio station...), and then back to London to 'wake up', (or in my case, wind down...). Got my ears peeled for goss on AR, thats for sure! But Leonardo diCaprio is the flavour of the day today [gag]. Love it -when will internet through cell phones/palm held devices become cheap???

Hey Amanda--Not only am I also from Texas, but I'm a James Mason fan also. There are some real similarities between JM and AR, not only the voice but the tendency to play endearing bad guys as in the 1953 A Star is Born. I was thinking the other day what a great role that would be for AR, but I kind of doubt they will remake it a 5th time (even as a non-musical). So, I guess I'll just have to anxiously await the Texas video.
Oh, and to all the people talking about Peter O'Toole recently, I loved him when I was a kid. Also, I bet I'm the only one on this guestbook who has the soundtracks to both his "musicals": The Ruling Class and If anyone would like to listen to one of the finest public broadcasting stations in the world, you can check out Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio Canada and listen to some excellent shows. I lie, I found Radio 1 - just lots of dead links on their site. Problem though - its 1 in the morning there and the music is very different to what they play in the day... Ah well! Bliss.... Decent music.... Ok, this is vaguely off-topic... For all you tech-heads out there who have nothing better to do than sit at work all day and stare at a computer screen (i.e. me...), then maybe you should try online radio... I have been checking out some of the British ones, although I am bummed that Radio 1 is not streaming on the web... Anyway, a list of online radio stations can be found at: Darlene, you can buy the TMD screenplay, and I recommend it for someone who likes to read as much as you do! A bonus: nice pix from the film. I ordered mine from Amazon. I wonder if the actresses trying out for the naked-stripper role get to screentest with the man himself? In which case, I'm sure a lot of us would be willing to try out! Greetings from the oven once known as Texas. Watched a wonderful old James Mason movie last night, and was wondering--is anyone else in Rickman-land also a Mason fan? I can't be the only one who loves an older generation's velvet voice, too.... I must also bemoan the postponement of the Blow Dry release date, although, I think, we must all be used to such things by now. My husband had finally agreed to actually go to the movie theater and watch an AR movie with me, and that was going to be the one. With the exception of Die Hard and Sense and Sensibility (during which I had to keep a good hold of him), he has steadfastly refused to watch the films I have suggested. He has, however, stated many times that AR would be terrific as The Master in a film version of Dr. Who (which, by the way, his wife watches WITH him). While I am computer-challenged and not good at linking, I would point out that there are many other excellent sites on the web for chatting about grief and mourning-related topics which should be easily located. It looks like Darlene needs to get this off her chest, and the appropriate forum should not be hard to find. Just a suggestion. Darlene, TMD was Antony Minghella's first film. He both wrote it (specifically for Juliet Stevenson) and directed. It was planned for British television but blown up from 16 mm for theatrical showing when they realized how good it was. Can anyone tell me it TMD was a novel originaly amd if so who is the Author. Thank you. If I'm not jumping the gun, then phew! Thanks Della! I was wondering if anyone had the patience to download the wallpapers... Didn't matter how I tried it, images that size were just HUGE! Anyway, got one more project (not AR related) to finish this week, and then I am going to start creating more AR desktop wallpaper (more because I just enjoy creating them and thanks to Suzanne for sending me some super photos!!). Got to do something during the Olympics since there won't be much on TV (could there be a better time to have an AR-fest with the videos - particularly with GQ and Dogma recently released in Australia - and may I add Dogma has been completely off the shelf now for 2 weeks! Just to popular...) Sally, thanks for reminding me. I recently purchased Mesmer, Dark Harbor, and Big adventure--I have all the others---I loved them all--was very surprised by the ending of dark harbor---WOW--that's all I'll say incase anyone hasn't seen it yet--it's worth buying and watching over and over again. My two favorites are Robinhood and Closetland---he was so awsome (in everything he does) but esp. in those two. I adore him--just finished downloading wallpaper of him so I can look at him all the time. 'd love to hear from anyone that's as taken with him as I am--I'll email, im, whatever--anytime. By the way---he used to personally answere fan mail--bout 5 years ago I wrote him twice and got two personal replys--awsome. LOMG LIVE ALAN RICKMAN..... On the bright side, all you scandanavians AR fans are in for a treat - expanded dates for Help! I'm a Fish! Denmark 6 October 2000 Yowser! The International Movie Database has also stopped showing Blow Dry as being releases on the 22nd September! Now they just have the Netherlands in March 2001! Looks vury vury grim here. folks - like Miramax really DID send out something saying it was not going to be released... Piffle! In today's (4 Sept--still that here) "Mirror": 3 AM: NAOMI CAMPBELL NAOMI Campbell lost the chance to writhe around naked with British screen villain Alan Rickman. The tempestuous supermodel had a screen test as his stripper girlfriend in The Search For John Gissing, only for her acting skills to let her down. I like your summary there, Suzanna - well put! Tis true, without the internet, we would not know eachother at all! And since I don't have a single friend who appreciated Alan Rickman the way I do (or maybe, they would be telling me I need to get a life so I am not so focused...?!), its nice to communicate with others from all over the world! As Kramer would say, "I'm luuuuuvin' every minute of it!" Well, I've done my troll of the news and movie websites and there ain't any news on AR. Although, I did stumble across a brief mention at Empire Online where they confirmed AR as Snape on the 20/8/00 - 3 days before CNN, so makes one wonder where they got that from! OK, Empire are british, so maybe they are closer to the source?! And Claire - I don't know how you do it! Pictures from a video that will taunt all of us overseas until Texas releases it on the web (I hope)...! You are amazing! I have to admit tho, music TV in Australia is shocking, so I am confining myself to watching Channel 10's 'Video Hits" on the weekend only. If its new, they'll show it, I'm sure! Right? Fingers Crossed???!!!! Off Topic, (sort of) I'm sorry, but I've just got to brag-- My boyfriend gave me a Chapters.ca coupon, and thanks to him, I will now be the proud owner of Judas Kiss and Bob Roberts. Yeees, support and love are a GOOD thing! Thank you Claire, Suzanne, Raffaella, Claudia, and everyone else who's been providing so many wonderful ways for all of us to get together and discuss our various interests outside of the GB! As Julia mentioned below, Aung San Suu Kyi is once again, sort of, under "house arrest" by another name. Anyone wishing to read more might find this article rewarding: The Globe and Mail. All right, I have a lot of topics to cover, so let me get started To add to Claire's and Sally's posts about e-mail lists & chat rooms, I agree that these are fantastic ways to communicate about off topic subjects and personal feelings at greater length. *I* do quite often. In fact, I'd be delighted to chat with all you Newbies (and oldies!) in the IRC #Rickman room, about anything & everything AR related and unrelated. We now meet every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern (if you need help joining, please write me). Claudia also has a wonderful chat room. Which reminds me, the Chat Options page is in dire need of updating, so aside from going there for IRC instructions, please check the FAQ (which Claudia is doing an incredible job keeping up-to-date!) for more chat options. As for the GB, yes, occasional personal and off topic posts are fine. Really! We just try not to go overboard. This is a public forum after all, and I don't believe in censoring (except for three reasons which are stated in the FAQ). However, it is Alan Rickman who brought us all together in the first place and, therefore, the Guestbook is first and foremost a place to discuss AR's work and to relate & catch up on the latest news. In doing so and because of our related interests, many of us have become very close. So I don't just consider us a community, but more like family. And like a real family, we can sometimes get on each others nerves, right? But that doesn't mean we don't still care for each other. It amazes me how easily it is to offend the worlds sensibilities. But we are a kind and a civil lot. Let's try our best to keep it that way. Thank you SO much, Claire, and also Georgiana, Sally and Mindy, for all the info, reviews, photos, etc. of the TEXAS music video! Re: Shakespeare in Performance. FANTASTIC book. The two photos in the book, mentioned earlier, can be found in the Theatre/Stage section of the Photo Gallery. For your convenience, here's a couple of direct links: I did a bit of updating, and made a few additions to the Photo Gallery. Please check the What's New Page for more detailed. Welcome Karen, Joan and Lee, to the Realm! I'll delurk to say that the AR/Snapes news has just sunk in (I've been catching up since the start of August.) This is just so PERFECT! An AR fan's dream come true! How often have we wished for something like this! Better get the GB ramped up for massive hits from instant fans all over the world, I hope xoom's servers can take it. I have concerns about the director though if he was responsible for Home Alone. In the last year I took a job that requires me to commute by car about an hour and a half a day. Thanks to this GB I had acquired the tapes of The Return of the Native narrated by AR and have listened to the whole thing three times. I am in awe of the talent displayed. He maintains a different voice and the different accents for each character, and doesn't so much read as he does act the
entire book. I enjoyed it so much that I got the tapes of Sense and Sensibility from the same company (Audio Editions, Cover to Cover Classics), read by Sarah Badel. Her perfectly deadpan dry delivery, perfectly enunciated, combined with Jane Austen, had me cracking up in the car several times. I recommend it. I had been saving up the Harry Potter books as good things to listen to on tape, to prolong the (assumed) enjoyment rather than zipping through them (I'm a fast reader.) Now I definitely will get them on tape to be able to look forward to the films. Also saw GQ at Christmas and regretted reading subsequently that a lot of scenes had been cut to make it more of a kid's film. I would have loved to see the whole thing. I might try for Play at the film festival but this year I'll have to physically present myself at the ticket office to buy a single ticket instead of piggybacking off a friend's mass purchase, I dunno. Before relurking I'll express my thanks for the work put in by all who maintain AR sites, which I continue to visit. Your good work is much appreciated even by those of us who are silent. I am a Canadian woman newly taken-aback and captivated by the actor Alan Rickman. I have seen him in several movies the latest being "Sense & Sensibility" and his voice, face, demeanour and acting ability so unique in each separate character that he portrays. I belive that the movie viewing public will see a lot more of Mr Rickman in the future. It would be a waste if such talent were not made internationally a house-hold name for those who like film as much as I do. His portrayal of "Sheriff of Nottingham" in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was the opposite of the very endearing character he played in Sense & Sensibility. His talent stands out but you have to see at least two of his varied characters to understand such a wide range of talent this man has. His voice is unmistakeable. Like James Earl Jones his voice is as outstanding as his portrayals. He does not play a character he becomes that person for the role to make the character take on a life of it's own. This is a credit to such a fine actor as Mr Rickman. I wish he were not such a private person so that we could no a little about the man himself. To be a true talent, head above the rest you must be willing to give that extra 10% to the audience you are playing too. That 10% is the man behind the character. Keep up the fine performances Sir and I shall be on the look out for any future performances in movies so that I can witness your varied talents. I am proud to be an admirer. There seems to be a years difference in our ages and that makes me realize that I have probably seen you in so many roles but did not single you out as one and the same. My only question would be as follows: How tall are you really? As a comment you have very small and delicate looking hands and yet that is one more facet of your mystique. I do wish you great success and hope to see much more of you on the international screen....JTWinterblue This is going to be a great week! Dogma just out on video and now GQ is released on Wednesday! I have to say, that I did prefer the latter, and hopefully JK will be showing here soon(Thanks Sally for this info). I must say, that in the time I have spent on this GB, I have really enjoyed talking to you all via this new world on our computers, and sometimes we agree or disagree, who cares? We are all different in our lives and personalities and some of us like to share our innermost feelings and others don't. I Just like to read ALL your comments and news, werever you are from and build on our shared interest on the career of AR. If AR does read the GB, I hope he would agree with me. So lets celebrate this GB for without it, none of us would have had a chance to talk to one another, about this worthy actor, or ourselves. Bye. Further to Claire and my comments, for the new fans out there: Black Rose has a pretty darn comprehensive list of all the egroups and websites for Alan Rickman etc out there Re: Political affiliations--- From what I've heard trickling down the media pipe, the Labour party seems to be going a little wacko. They actually published a booklet denouncing the children's game of Musical Chairs because "it encourages bullying". I don't know about you guys, but I rather liked that game all those years ago... The booklet goes on to say that a game where everybody wins would be better. Now, who's right? ;) Also in the news, Aung sun thingamajiggedy (the political leader that stood up for democracy-- AR attended a benefit for her recently) I'm sorry I can't spell her name, has been arrested, and British diplomats are not being allowed to see her. *This* is a cause that will rouse our man!!! I will not be posting my personal feels any more. I am sorry it I offended any one. I think I will take some time off and morn my loss alone. This is not meant to make anyone feel badly...I'm sorry, feel to emotional to go on. I will post again when I here from MTV about my letter. to them. Love and Peace, Darlene Uh Hum. I kinda agree with you Magda! Apologies if I offend people with that agreement! Claire, you forgot, in addition to the ways to get in touch with other Alan Rickman fans, I now have a regular newsletter and an email list to discuss news (yep, thats in addition to Rafaella's, but its meant to discuss and share news items more than a general get together, so it has a different tone...). How strong are AR's political affilaitions these days??? An article in the Daily Telegraph has the British Labor Party boasting his support, but I thought I read somewhere that he was kind of a bit disillusioned by politicians over the last few years (and I have to admit, I am THOROUGLY disillusioned! You can't even vote for the 'lesser of two evil people' anymore - case in point - the next British, Australian and American elections at the national level all involve parties and leaders who I would deem incompetent and unable to enact the significant changes necessary, although I think the Australian party with its Year 2000 resolution to start endorsing discrimination against women is guaranteeing themselves a 1-way ticket out the door...) Thanks for the clarifications, Magda. I agree--we always want more of Mr. Rickman. But, unless he gives up sleeping, I don't see how he can work much harder. As always, I do appreciate your comments Let me be counted as one who has been finding it difficult to find the news or, alas, lack thereof, amongst the lengthy personal musings. We all experience painful losses--some more tragic than others, for some, both professionally and personally--but perhaps a word or two will suffice to alert one's friends in the Rickman world. Many of us have been blessed with close friendships arising from these pages; most have taken those heart-felt sharings into the realm of private e-mail. Claire, as always, we are in your debt. Many new names, have arrived at this page since Dogma, looking for Alan Rickman news and friendship with other Rickman fans. Well they have come to the right place. This is a thriving, diverse community who would wish it otherwise? However, perhaps now is a good time to highlight additional posting opportunities apart from the GB. Raffaella has kindly provided an alternative posting forum for Rickman fans via email on her one1list and there are numerous Chat options linked from Suzanne's Unofficial Fan Page. Three years ago, when the news aspect of the GB became cluttered with wonderful stories, another separate home was opened Flights of Fancy and there it thrives. Thus, the GB has remained easy to read for mainly news information and project discussion which, according to the header on the page, is it's primary purpose. Oh, and one more thing: if anyone else would prefer that recent personal postings take place privately, they should not be intimidated by fears that they will be accused of harshness or meanness. I am sure that GBers will not use such emotional tactics just because they disagree with someone. I received a private email from someone whose opinion I respect who indicated some surprise at my earlier posting regarding Darlene. Looking it over again, I realize that my concern for Darlene's period of mourning caused me to be less clear than I should have been and that it might have left the wrong impression of my feelings. So here's the revised and expanded version. 1. Anonymous posters should be ignored; if they don't have the guts to sign their names, it's the equivalent of throwing a snowball and running away. 2. The GB is a place to discuss Alan Rickman and his projects, as it states very clearly at the top of the page. Some leeway is given when the news is a little slow and we all post Off-Topic occasionally; this isn't a big deal. But multiple lengthy postings several times a day about intensely personal matters are not appropriate. 3. My posting should not be seen as an encouragement but rather as a resigned acknowledgement that if someone choses to make personal postings, there really isn't much that can be done about it. Rather than get into a sweat, ignoring them is the best option. However, I would prefer that those people who wish to offer sympathy would do so via private email. Georgianna: yes, it's been a very active year but we've already heard about that stuff. We want more. Like when's Blow Dry coming out? "AR isn't doing much lately"? I beg to differ, Magda. He was just on stage at the ROyal Court; we are awaiting the release of a film shot less than a year ago; he rejoined old friends to do a little Beckett soon to be seen, just finished another no one had even heard of; and, if they can come to terms, he is likely to begin filming one of the most awaited films of all time--"Harry Potter"--scheduled to begin in one month. In between, he cut his vacation short to do a music video which sounds like an absolute gift to his fans; has been brushing up his French for another film (well, this night happen), voices a character in a cartoon, and we don't know what all. This after a year when he's been in two very popular films and we've seen the video release of two others it looked like we'd never see. I find these heady times indeed. Okay, now I absolutely MUST see that video after seeing those photos!!!!!!!!! Thanks Claire! And thanks for contacting MTV Darlene!! Also Darlene add my voice to those who DO NOT Feel that it was inappropriate for you to talk about your loss on this board!Sometimes it's a cold world and we need to reach out and express our pain! Darlene, a forum that regularly discusses Truly Madly Deeply is not inappropriate to mention actual loss and all its complexities. You also have the benefit of like-minded individuals here, good for the consolation dept. Loss is terrible, and its acceptance is always too long in coming. Watching Alan Rickman movies will have an extra poingnant dimension for you for having shared them with your friend! Suz, Thanks for getting me out of the centering pickle. Hello everyone, I don't think it's a good idea to pay attention to anonymous messages. Since AR isn't doing much lately, people can discuss other things if they wish. If Darlene derives some comfort from her postings and if her late friend's family is comfortable with having such detailed information posted in a public space, then it really isn't anyone else's business and those of us who aren't interested can just skip over them. Katrina: You have to scroll down to the very bottom of Claire's page; she like's to hide things sometimes. Hi, it's been a while. ;-) Darlene, my deepest condolences on your loss! I've been there... It's no comfort, I know. Although, Ann's suggestions sounded very comforting! ;-) Take care and never stop being who you are, Darlene! A cru for help, Claire! Have I understood this right: you have pictures from the new Texas music video?! Where? I only find the TMD pics, which are lovely! But I must admit that my curiousity is piqued! *understatement of the year* Thank you in advance! For anyone in the UK, "Eco Challenge, Argentina" is on the Discovery Channel at the moment (11am) Its on again this afternoon (repeat? part two?) so if you miss it you can have your "The Voice" fix then. No hands though. *sigh* Hey Ho.... Ann and Darlene, As someone who grew up in a socialist country I do not believe in repressin, censorship, or snobbery. So, I'd just like to join in condemning that person who said that sharing personal grief is inappropriate. The comment was insensitive to say the least, and I hope that if any one else (God Forbid) should experience a loss as tragic as Darlene's, they will find a community of caring individuals ready to listen, no matter how mushy it may be. It never fails to shock me that sending *virtual chicken soup* to someone is OK if they say they have the flu, but providing support if they have lost someone isn't. Call me dense, but I don't see a difference.... *shrug* Darlene Dear, "It was a dark and stormy night, . . ." Correction made. Sorry about the centering, don't know how to change it back...HELP!!! Darlene, here, Claire, RE: TIMES ARTICLE/MINGHELLA: I take it you're not a Gere fan, Renie. I laughed when I got to the bottom of the page and saw the real link. Oh, Claire. H*nds. Medics, please. Thanks for the Times link. Follow-up story on the link-- "Film scripts attack Gere's low standard of acting" As Pink Floyd sings. "IS THERE ANYBODY...OUT THERE!!!" Darlene here, The Times Has an article on Minghella and Beckett's Play at the Venice Film Festival. Melissa, I've finally managed a copy of Wetherby. Could you say again where in the film you thought there was a possibility? Thank you. Can we say "music video"? They do lots of anatomically impossible things on those. Aaargghhh !! Just seen that video. On one of those Saturday morning kids programmes (CDUK). They didn't show all of it but just enough to turn my legs to jelly. Definitely cannot wait for the single release now 8-D Thigh?? Can we say anatomically impossible? By the way, "Play" is showing at the Toronto International Film Festival! Claire, once again, wonderful pictures! I think TMD has some of the most touching and beautiful scenes and pictures of many of the movies i've ever seen! Err ... not quite Magda, the thigh is actually part of the petrol pump!! Yes the lady is the lead singer with Texas. Amanda, *usual place* is just a click on my name in this Guest Book. Nice pics Claire but I don't think the sideburns are the Jaime look. It's the same look he had during Tango at the End of Winter (or whatever it was called). What a wonderful in-joke! Very clever. Since I'm not familiar with the band, is the woman in the pics the actual singer? She must be very athletic if that's indeed her thigh on his shoulder and up against his ear in the second pic. Um, can someone enlighten a lurker with what "the usual place," is, Claire? Also, on TMD: my husband and I have had much debate about Jamie's motives, and something I pointed out was that all the other ghosts (and Jamie) were all people who had obsessions or fixed loves: movie buffs, musicians...lovers. Too attached until they were released by the other party, which is a problem for movie buffs and musicians and the like, which is why they were lurking around available to help Jamie (a) help Nina get a handle on their past reality instead of her fantasy of their past, and (b)get her to let him go. He said himself, he's very sensitive to pain, so he wanted her to stop hurting for *both* of them. Interesting interpretation with the homosexual thing, and supportable from a literary analysis point of view, but I think it's a "meta" message if it's there at all, not really a part of the characters or the story. Lovely pics as usual Claire-thanks for sharing! Well said Nacy R. As always, thanks ever so much, Claire! I see he's returned to Jamie's sideburns! Lovely photos! Can hardly wait to see the video. Cool! Thank you, Claire. STOP PRESS Alan Rickman and Sharleen Spiteri Texas Tango pictures in the usual place. If you have checked CPP in the last hour you may need to do a *Ctrl+Refresh* on your browser to force the page to reload. Apologies in advance for a long post. Oddly enough, I was thinking about TMD this morning before I switched on my computer. I'm a writer myself, currently struggling to rewrite a novel, so I try to analyze good stories. In particular, I wondered why Anthony Minghella chose to add the other ghosts to his story and why they're all male, a fact which he considered significant enough to have Nina mention it. And now here's Josephine's theory (which, for the record, doesn't concern AR's own sexual orientation, but Minghella's script). My take on the ghost friends is this: something has to happen to break up the romantic idyll between Jamie and Nina. If it were just the two of them, they could go on forever, unless Jamie started to behave so badly that Nina told him to go. And if Jamie were given to behaving badly - which he isn't, aside from being a tease and a bit controlling - why would she love him so much? Or she might eventually break up with him because he can't leave the flat or allow himself to be seen by anyone else. (Minghella never says that he can't, but it's implied by the way Jamie hides whenever anyone comes calling, and by the presence of the ghost friends. Jamie, unlike Nina, can't exist outside the flat, and needs company for the hours when she's away.) But breaking up with him for those reasons would make Nina seem heartless. So, enter the ghost friends to come between them, which they do mainly by pointing up the obvious: Jamie is dead. They serve another purpose at the end by helping us to accept Jamie's situation: he's lost Nina forever, but at least he's not alone. He's got his friends ("great guys"). As to why they're all men, I suspect that Minghella wanted to rule out any hint that Jamie might have another romantic interest. His return to set Nina free is meant to be purely selfless. That's what makes the story so touching. Josephine's theory is interesting, and of course it's impossible to know what was in Minghella's mind when he wrote the screenplay, but having read it several times, I don't find any support for a submerged homosexual theme. Oops, the "Times" snippet was 3 August. Sorry. From an article in today's London "Times": One of the few ways for a British actor to get work in Hollywood is to play the villain in a thriller, but not every actor from these islands can follow in the prissy footsteps of Rickman and Irons. Christopher Eccleston is a considerable performer, but his stock-in-trade in films such as Jude and Shallow Grave has been idealism or at least scruple. In the spectrum of negative character he can get as far as bloodymindedness, but menace is beyond him. The article is up at the Mirror site ('3am' then 'Texas Two to Tango') but, alas, no pictures. Perhaps one of our UK readers can oblige? From today's "Mirror": 3 AM: IT TEXAS TWO TO TANGO AS UNLIKELY pairings go in music videos, this one has to be up there with Tammy Wynette and KLF. Sharleen Spiteri's greatest fantasy came true when her film idol Alan Rickman jumped at the chance to slither all over and tango with the Texas singer in the band's new video In Demand. Director Vaughan Arnell asked Sharleen who she would most like to appear with and she shyly said Rickman - who will be starring as the sour Professor Snape in the Harry Potter film. Arnell, who also directed Robbie Williams' freaky Rock DJ video, asked Rickman if he was up for it. The actor was so keen he cut short his summer holiday so he could cuddle up to the Glaswegian singer. In the video, Rickman hugs Sharleen in the back of a car and then they perform the sensual tango. "I really wanted to have Alan Rickman in it as he is sexy in a sinister kind of way," Sharleen tells us. "Who wouldn't want to tango in a petrol station at midnight with a sexy, older man?" Who indeed? GRAPHIC: GREAT MOVERS: Sharleen and Alan do the tango; CHEEK TO CHEEK:; Getting up close and personal in the new Texas video Sally, the photo of AR on p.46 is a side on shot of him holding up the couple (the lady being Juilet Stevenson), on the far right with a purple sash across his chest. Not one of the best, I know, the one's as Achilles are better!I really enjoyed this book and have learn't a lot. It was good to see the photo's of all his friends too.For what it is worth, TMD is still my favourite movie and AR did put in, what I think is his best performance, here. Who cares how we see the story line working here- we all see screenplays and books differently don't we? bye . First of all, Maxine, I wasn't Josephine. On TMD, from what I've read about AR and watcjing TMD "50 million times" (you must picture the grave yard scene in Beatleguise), the gaggle of Guys..."..and why are they all men?" Because in real life almost all AR's friends are women and you know that AR and JS wre using their real relationship as the basis for the charaters.. I don't think its a Homosexual reference, in fact I think that homosexual references would be more or less, except dark harbor.. where its germaine to the plot, not desirable. Having said all that, I must agree with Sally, it doesn't matter one bit. Would we be us if it mattered? Would we be the most intelligent, decerning, talented, ( come on whats some more good stuff?) committed (any day now) wonderful fans if it really mattered. I'm sorry but if left in a room, alone with AR.. I'd be wanting the conversation. "What is the nature of the universe.." and stuff like that there. NOTE: AR- doing harry potter means that you won't be playing Merlin. I'm on page 78, and its as good as ten years of thinking about it can get you. Unless youd play two black haired wizards in one lifetime? No, huh? Ouch. whats one more thing? Note to everone else, don't let the sexual thing matter, communication is the real prize. From "D,

I have been keeping an eye out on all the NY papers for the opening date of "Blow Dry" (Sept.22,2000), so far I have seen no news that it will be showing on that date. I will be getting a copy of the Villiage Voice, which comes out every Wed.. I will let everyone know weather there is any new, news or not. I also have a friend who works for one of the theathers in SOHO, he usually knows what going on in the theathers there and in the Villiage. He says if he hears anything he will let me know. I've met some wonderful and supportive friends who share my interests this way. AR has good reason to be proud of his fans.

I was at the CD-Now site, listening to the music clips from their various albums and I actually remembered one from back in the '80s (I used to watch a lot of MTV back then!). Here's hoping the video crosses the pond!

Darlene here, Again I must tell you how greatful I am to you for being so understanding of my loss. I have a great deal of respect for all of you. I know that we come from different places and background, but it's nice to know that people can get together weather it be face to face or on line and discuss things and share the love and admiration of a very talented actor. Some of us make joke around and get kind of mushy about our feels for AR, but thats what makes him a fine actor too me. I'm not a person who is easly impressed. There is alot pain in the world today and living here in NY where there are a lot of problems with race in certain factions, I understand the need to have freedom of speech, and the freedom to be who you are with what ever opinon you have. For those of you who do not like the fact that I shared my feeling about my friend, all I can say is...I hope you never have to go though what my friends family and I have had to. I wouldn't wish this feeling on my worst enemy (not that I have any enemies). I did ask Ahmees parents if it was ok for me to post how I felt and they comeing from a country where saying what you feel can get you killed , told me that they were honored that I loved there child so much that I want to share my feeling about her. I wish you all could have gotten to know Ahmee on GB. She was a great old girl(smile). I also want to say that I enjoy reading all the post from all of you. Even though we have never ment I feel like I at home. Can't you see us all crowded up in the living room (like Jamie and his friend in TMD), eating popcorn and watching Alan Rickman movies and discussing which one is the best and in which one did he have the best hair. I hope I do get to meet some if not all of you great people in the near future.
Love And Peace,
Your Fellow Alan Rickman Fan,j

P.S. I wrote a nice long letter to MTV about not showing the Texas, Tango Video so that we all could enjoy the band and AR. I will let you know what I get back from them as soon as I hear. I mean what do they think we don't like Brit-Pop. And oh yea...sorry about the spelling I've got a great college education but my spelling sucks, always have to have a dictionary next to me...HA,HA,HA...smile.

Do you remember the Peanuts cartoons which depict Snoopy as a mystery writer? Ooops! There's another creative mind who's gone to the Great Inkwell above. ;) Ahem. AR movie suggestion: Sense & Sensibility. Did you write that you couldn't stand Marianne? I would also suggest Micheal Collins or TMD. The fact that Liam Neeson joins AR is sufficient reason for me to like MC. As for TMD, what can I say? I was raised with Doctor Who and Monty Python.:)
Re: the insensitive "commentators": my, my, my. One dare not share any experience of loss or suffering. :( This *is* a public forum, and yet, who are they to say what you've written is inappropriate, provided it's in lanaguage that's safe for your nine-year-old niece?
May Alan comfort you, Darlene, and sleep in tomorrow!

Before I go to my room and fall asleep watching AR and cying myself to sleep.
I was reading some poetry and came across this one. I wanted to share it with all of you. It's one of my favorites and since the subject of being old has been spoken of about AR I think I will deadicate this poem to him.
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, an of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false of true,
But one man(Woman) loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
I hope I got all the HTML right. If not sorry. But the poem is still just as beautiful. I know that's how I will always think about AR.
Have a good night all.
Love and Peace,

Forgot to mention the TMD photos. I think the Johnny Mathis song goes:
"And,I say to myself it's, wonderful,wonderful,...Oh so wonderful, my love."
Love the photo of JS and AR at the kepboard. What wonderful hands AR has. Got to go back and look some more. Don't know which are better. Tango or TMD...Oh,hell, it's all good as gravy...that's if you like gravy, Or should I say sauce. In america we call it gravy.(Smile)

I read the acticle on Anthony Mingella. I must say as talented as Mr Minghella may be, I read Michael Ordaajes' book "The English Patient" Long before the movie. I must say that in a lot of ways I was very diappointed. I loved this story and the idea that thestory between the two main charactors, Kip and Hana, was so totally changed at to make the relationship seem almost unimportant, was very upsetting to me. What was wrong with leaving the story intact. I have nothing agaist Screenplays persay, but to me that is why I don't like going to the movies that much anymore. It's like when Anne Rice's "Interview With The Vampire" came out. First off who the hell thought of Tom Cursie as Lestat...Geez, give me a break. The the way they smashed all the stories together. And, TC ain't no rock star so what is the next picture,Dear,God...,going to be like.
"The English Patient", is a lovely book. Micheal Ondaatje, is an incredible writer. The way the book flows is so magical. It takes you with it and makes you feel like Kip and Hana. Makes you feel their love, their pain. Makes you feel the suroundings and the situation. I don't feel it needed any help. Sometimes a book should be a book and not changed around. But, that's just my opinon. I have never read Highsmiths book,"The Talented Mr. Ripley, nor have I seen the movie, but now I shall do both. I will of course read the book first.

Hey it's me, Darlene,
Kinda slow today...huh. That's ok. Just wanted to know it anything new was up. The funeral was short and sweet. Ahmee would have been quite happy with it. She always said, "Except for A good glass of wine, An Alan Rickman Movie, and Good Sex nothing should take forever. You certainly don't want fokes snoring at you, do you? (Smile).
My eyes are still red and puffy. I certain am going to have that glass of champain though. Maybe one of you can suggest which AR movie I should watch in Ahmees honnor tonight...huh. I hope, don't sound really wishy washy. I got some email back about spilling my guts about this. And sufice to say some of it was not so nice. And, not only that the person didn't even give a name. Made me cry even more. Sorry if I'm causing any problems for anyone. Part of me isn't making much sence right now. Ahmee let me all her AR stuff. I'm sitting here looking at the box, writing to you and lessoning to the thunder and lighting crash. Great setting for a movie script...don't you think?

Getting ready to leave for the funeral. Feeling rather sad. Took a look at Clairs' Texas, Tango photos. My God what a man. Made me feel a little better. Going to stare at them some more when I get back. I know I'm going to need it. Bought a bottle of champain. Going to pour me a glass, look at Alan and make a toast to Ahmee my friend and AR, two really great talented people. See you guys later tonignt. Thats if I'm any shape to do so. Thanks for all your support.

Just to make you laugh or smile a little.
A friend of mine, who does trouble shooting for a software company, told me that he got a call for a woman this morning:
My Friend: "Hello may I help you?"
Woman: "Oh, yes, I seem to be having a problem with my computer, and I can't seem to fix it."
My Friend: "Well tell my the problem. Maybe I can walk you though it, and help you fix it."
Woman: "Well every time I turn on my computer and go on the internet I hear it say "You've Got Mail."
My Friend: "Ok...well what the problem with that? I don't understand what you mean."
Woman: "Well, it says you've got mail, but every time I go to my mailbox there is nothing in it."
My Friend: "OOOOOOOOKKKKKKK...!!! (smile)
I must say he made my afternoon. Study for my Medical Terminology test is giving me a headache. Well...I did take a little break to watch AABA. Shame, shame on me. (laugh). Just trying to keep my mind ocuppied. Got the Fuerual on Sat...
