Many thanks, Lisbeth, for your updates. I've been trying here in the boonies to find copies of the Daily Express, to no avail. The closest place is NYC, which is a bit of a trek, but if I knew where it was sold, I would go and try to buy up a few copies for interested parties. If anyone has any leads to distributors in the New York/Connecticut area, please post or email me. Thanks!

Hi ya'll. Lisbeth, my thanks to for your summaries. Wonderful addition to the morning cuppa. I ordered my copy from Blackwell's and got a confirmation today. I even splurged for the air mail so it would come in a timely fashion. Heck, Had I know I would have told my parents to keep an eye out for it as they are over on that side of the pond at the moment. OH!! All PBS viewers. Truly, Madly, Deeply will be on PBS Sunday night At least here in the Northwest. So you might check your local channels for details. I could make about four copies as I have four VCR's (It's a long story.) so, if anyone needs a personal copy and can't get it. The first four who ask win! ta ta mates Andrea C.

I've just returned from a wonderful holiday in the UK bearing in my very hot little hands THE BOOK. YES, the AR Biography!! I'm so excited that it was issued while I was in London. It was in stock at the National Theatre Bookshop. The cover is a gorgeous black and white photo. I've not had time to read it all but it is very informative though not beautifully written (it won't win a writing prize but what do I care). Some interesting photos from the seventies and of course a photo of AR with Rima. Lots of info on her. I won't go on but just give you the phone # of the National's bookshop which does mail order 011-44-171-928-2033 x 600. The cost is 15.99 pounds which is about $25.00. Hope you all get your copies soon. Cheers!

Lisbeth, Thanks so much for the frequent updates on the book review of AR's biography. Has anyone in the US found a dealer that is selling the book? My local bookstore can only identify books published in the US, so every time I give them the ISBN number they tell me it isn't in print.

Let me guess...AR perpetually complained of being cold and kept his overcoat on at all times, and Ruby Wax always felt like she'd come down with a tropical disease.

Me again, with an update on the biography of Alan Rickman, as summarized in the Daily Express. Apparently, he is artistic in more than his acting: they mention he is a very talented water-colour painter, and has an extremely wonderful handwriting. He has a very wide circle of friends, and female friends love him because of his ability to listen, as well as being very loyal and protective. He is very caring, kind and proper (talking to fans at the stage door). He shared a flat once with Ruby Wax (where they quarreled about the heating level), which was the start of a lifelong friendship and professional association. (They have a production company together). He lives now in the West of London, not far from his mother. he wmnes a maisonette (does someone know what this is ??) cost: £250.000. And keeps it in perfect tidy condition. Apparently, he is a lot like the character he played in TMD: a bit of a pessimist, critisizing government, untidy flats, red bills etc. ... Well, it's nice to know a bit more personal things about our man isn't it?

Just read comments on AR. AR has an inner quality that needs %0%0to be admired. He trully becomes the person he portrays. First%0%0saw him in Die Hard, but really started to admire him in Robin%0%0Hood. Thought he was a fantastic villain. Loved him in Sense%0 nd Sensibility. %0%0

In the Daily Express of today I saw the first part of a review of the biography of Alan. According to this, Rima has been Alan's first and only girlfriend. They have been together for 30 years. They've always lived together until Alan decided to buy a house somewhere else in London (after his Die Hard success). She is obliged to live or work in the district she is a local councellor for. So, they live apart, but are still very much together. The rest of the article focuses on his sexual attraction and his faithfulness (in comparison to his colleagues). I suppose tomorrow they will talk more about his career. I promise to keep the articles and to send them to Karina, so you all can read them!

I was also wondering about ClosetLand? Someone told me it was made into a play. I'd be very interested if it were. I also like the debates on the page. A difference in opinion is the spice of life. ( As long as it is not a stupid opinion .) I missed this page while I was in Texas . I'm rambling...I'm sorry . Anyway I thought Alan looked ummm.... Yummy at the Emmy's and I really didn't care who he was sitting with. I hope no one found the other quote to crass. I do agree that he has an intense mentally arousing sexuality. But he also appeals to the .... animal side of the female of the species. That was fun to type.

At Chris' suggestion, I have found today that Blackwell's now has THAT book in stock. On another subject entirely, is there a UK politico out there who might know if Rima Horton has taken, or is planning, another stab at running for elective office? Would a NEXIS search pull this up?

OK, I'll join in, why not. I first noticed Alan Rickman as a direct result of his acting ability. Sense and Sensibility was the first role I'd seen him in that made me sigh...I had not seen many of the other movies until after Sense and Sensibility. I was delighted, however to discover that I really enjoyed his other performances as well. Each one shows me an actor who cares for his craft. In Rasputin I NEVER saw Alan Rickman, I saw Rasputin. His Hans Gruber was chilling and amusing in a criminal sort of way. Pity Bruce Willis won the day IMHO. TMD....Ahhhh, Jamie has his faults and I loved the character all the more for them. It was AR's ability to bring out those faults that seduced me. As a result of the characters he plays, I have grown to sincerely love the man although I've never met him. Now, perhaps I would think differently if I did meet him, but through the AR grapevine I have good reason to believe I would probably enjoy his company when he is OUT of character too. But I grew up in a theatrical family and actors hold little illusion for me. I think he is sexy because he portrays that sensuality so bloody well...it just leaves me...well, Dead Chuffed!

It's nice to see some debate on the page! I admit that his choice of roles has been interesting. A friend noticed CME on our shelf. "This is an intense acting piece," he said. "Is that the torture one?" my husband asked, having heard me refer to ClosetLand that way. "No," I said, "it's the incest one. The other incest one." CME is really the ironic story of a man who makes incredible amounts of money for spotting trends yet cannot see that he has been taking his wife for granted and driven her to find passion outside their marriage. It is true that he hardly touches her early in the film, but contrast this with the final scenes. When he is running his fingertips up and down Natalie's injured leg...well, it made me shiver. As I've said before, this slant is probably more obvious when you have my version: 60 minutes with all the boring bits without AR cut out.

Well, I for one have to admit to being a gushing fan. But, I am also in agreement with Elizabeth and Mary. After all, it was his acting ability that sparked my interest in him. Obviously a great portrayal of his abilities is in Rasputin, which was recognized by winning an emmy. I happen to be a fan of the historical Rasputin and feel that AR made the character as mesmerizing as I have always heard that he was. My praises also go to AR for portraying the character historically correct. It was a good script yes, but AR had to have done some research, not only into Rasputin the character, but the study of hypnosis as well. What do you think?

Thanks to the guerrilla tactics of recent posts, I'm reminded once again how very threatened some men are by real--not media invented--expressions of female sexuality. I'm also taken aback by how easy it is in this technology to launch provocative ideas from behind a screen of anonymity. And I'm struck as well by how vulnerable unmarried, non-parent men over the age of 25 are to presumptions of closet homosexuality. Quick, Karina! Bring on those distracting new press clippings before we devolve into a flame war!

Elizabeth - your comment about the "passion" of Rickman's character was right on the money. After reading the page on Saturday, I swore I would not return because the remarks getting posted were so ridiculous - particularly regarding his passion-less love scenes. My gosh, he did not write the script he simply acted the role, which, IMHO, he played exactly to spects! I won't repeat your comments, Elizabeth, but my sentiments were exactly the same as yours. Had those scenes been played differently (with great sexual passion) the point of the movie would have been diluted. My guess is that AR is drawn to these roles because the characters are complex, the motivation for their actions subtle, which requires skill from the actor to communicate the character's emotions and intent to the audience.

I, too, have no use for instigators. But I have to admit that it was refreshing to see some comments on AR's acting ability, comparison of roles, thoughts on motivation, etc. Maybe sometimes we tend to be too adoring and miss the chance to discuss more complex issues. I happen to think that the writer missed the point in criticizing AR's "romantic" roles in CME and TMD. It seems to me that the bedroom scene in CME is meant as a contrast to the wild eroticism of the brother/sister relationship, and to show how far removed Sinclair is from his wife's true thoughts. And I don't think that Jamie in TMD is supposed to be erotic at all (though he comes close in several scenes). The "ghost" is there to aid Nina in getting past her grief for him, not to satisfy his own needs. OK--if my comments seem inappropriate to any of you, go ahead and let me have it! At least it would be disagreement from within the family rather than from without.

Well it finally happened! Our happy little "family" has been invaded by those internet jerks who go from site to site instigating and trying to get a rise out of people! You know the ones I mean! They never like anyone and they ALWAYS have the inside information on things and people. Trouble is its always ugly and usually wrong! What a bunch of rubbish they have spewed on this guestbook! It would be funny if it just weren't so PATHETIC. Well, all I can say is if we begin ignoring them now, they will go away that much sooner. Andrea

Someone use a spoon on Unbeliever and the like, "No more merciful beheadings", eh? To his choices in "sexual roles", I find them interesting and exciting. He plays parts that stimulate our imaginations and makes us want to think more about them. The man who keeps you wondering is infinitely more attractive than the one you know all about.

Ocala, Fl USA - 09/21/96A at 19:19:38
I think it is really sad when people such as Lisa O., Bernie, and Unbeliever get pleasure in trying to get a rise out of everyone else that enjoys this page. If you don't like the comments being made, please just go somewhere else. We fans of Alan have no use for you! I can't believe the comments that Lisa O. made concerning Rima Horton. That was totally crude and says a lot for a persons integrity and character. I think that the fact that they get pleasure in talking bad about other people they don't even know shows exactly that they obviously don't have anything better to do with their own life, so putting down someone elses makes them feel better. I am a tremendous fan of Mr. Rickman's talents and appreciate that Karina has developed this page for us to come and share things. So please, everyone respect the work she has done and use this for what it is meant to be - "The Alan Rickman Fan Page".

While I do think Rickman is very sexy and a wonderful actor, I also have noticed his lack of sexual chemistry with his leading ladies. In CME, the bedroom scene is about as sexy as watching cows chew grass and he is certainly passive in that one. Also there are no sparks between him and the woman who plays his wife AND he barely touches her with his fingertips. The feeling between Juliet Stevenson and him in TMD was lovely but not particularly erotic - more like mates or best friends. In fact, while I have seen him in a number of stage productions, the only one where he had sexual chemistry with his leading lady was in Les Liasions Dangerous - and even then, that was very uneven. I read a review by a theatre critic which stated that Md. Tourvel's footmen were more in danger from Valmont than she was and although one accepts stage mannerisms (esp. British stage mannerisms) as OK on the stage, at times they do come across as very camp. And he does seem drawn to very dark subjects; even in his stage work, he seemed to chose roles that emphasized sadism, cruelty, ambivalent sexual behavior, etc.

Yes, Lisa O., Colonel Brandon was a bit stuffed--that was the point of the character, wasn't it? (Armand Assante?? Please!?) And to lovely Bernie and Unbeliever, if we need to get out more, why are you wasting time on the fan page of someone that you obviously don't admire?
Marie
USA - 09/21/96A at 02:05:45
I don't think he's gay, but I do think he's sexually passive, and let's face it, he's gained a few pounds since TMD, which prevents, I think, the subtleties of his emotional expression from registering as purely in his frame and face as they did five years ago. Forgive me (my loves), but doesn't Colonel Brandon seem a bit stuffed to you? It's true that there were no women in the gang in Die Hard; it's also true there was no sexual tension between AR and Madelein Stowe in Closet Land (think of how Armand Assante or someone like that would have played it), but maybe that's what they wanted. It's quite possible that Rima Horton is a man, or AR's sister, but can't we just regard it aa a challenge to the ingenuity of the fantasy life? I'd still like to see him in a romantic leading role (but a bit less thick please . . . ), and I still turn to squish at the depth of his emotional and intuitive resonance. (P.S. Good point about the necrophilia. You're right, there is something convoluted going on.)

Did anyone else catch the caricature of AR in _The Critic_? The main character (whose voice is supplied by John Lovitz, of SNL) is reviewing a movie, and the movie happens to contain a scene with Alan Rickman and a couple of other "baddies" from _Die Hard_, all in cartoon form! Hi gang. Well, we HAVE been busy! Thanks for the Michael Collins review Laurie...god knows if little old Moscow, ID will ever get the movie. A word on The Moon and Sixpence...the novel. (I, alas, have no further info on the movie.) It is a story of a man, Charles Strickland, who basically gives up everything he knows in life in an attempt to become an artist, a pure artist with no agenda except to produce art. Strickland is one of those people who although you might hate, you can't help but admire a little, Why? Because he TRULY does NOT care what people think about him. He leaves his wife and the narrator asks him how could he do that. He says "What? I gave her everything I had for 20 years, what more does she want?' Don't you care what people will think about you? "No." And he means it. "Rafe" as Charles? nawww, say it isn't so. Alan is Charles...gotta be!! Now Rafe could play the Narrator who is certain a main character, but not the central character. Hollywood...who knows what they'll do next. It is not a long novel and it is unlike anything else out there. A classic for sure. ciao Andrea---who manages a bookstore, can't you tell.

A friend and I did an Allan Rickman film festival on video and noted a rather odd trend in his choice of rolles -- specifically, there tends to be alot of paraphilias represented. For example, incest in CLOSE MY EYES; necrophilia in Truly, Madly..; and of course, pedophilia and sexual sadism in CLOSET LAND.

I did get to see *MC* at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday. Neil Jordan and Aidan Quinn were there but, alas, no AR. A very worth addition to the AR canon. If you don't believe me, wait for Roger Ebert's review. He was there also. I must say that those in the UK may have to wait some time. Here's my review. *Michael Collins* is a story of Ireland and therefore a story of bravery, betrayal and brutality, both casual and systemic. It is also therefore a story of song, laughter and romance. Michael Collins (Liam Neeson) is 'Minister for Mayhem' in the shadowy Sein Fein government of Ireland. Eamon de Valere (DEV a'leera played by Alan Rickman) is the President. With his beloved 'Chief' either in jail or in America most of the time, Collins starts a campaign of political assassination directed at the legion of spies, informers and government agents that have always doomed the Irish freedom movement. When these tactics finally force the British to negiotiate for peace, Collins brings home a treaty to partition the country into the current arrangement of Ulster and the Irish Free State. This causes the final break for Collins with De Valere and also with his former blood brother, Harry Boland (Aidan Quinn). Did De Valere fear Collins' rising personal popularity as a threat to his own political position or did he see the Free State as another British yoke that would forever prevent a full Irish Republic? Any story of Ireland must have many sides but director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) has exercised his prerogative as storyteller and presented only one. In his story, Michael Collins is a martyr to the Irish dream of freedom which is forever racked by infighting and secret plots. Rickman is rock solid as the man who has been fighting with words, guns and patient suffering in a country where the most deeply held political beliefs can be swayed by a song, a fiddle and a pint. Consequently, Rickman comes across as colder than he might in a part that never really takes full advantage of his talents. Although on the purely physical side, after a comic jail break Collins says, "He'll have to go into hiding; there's no mistaking that nose." The story is lushly filmed with many finely drawn supporting characters. We see Collins' softer side through his romance with Kitty Kiernan (Julia Roberts). Was the extra funding worth using her instead of Natashia Richardson? Roberts has been working on her accent since *Mary Reilly* but it still comes and goes. However, Neeson is powerful enough to carry the scenes for both of them. Shephen Rhea is once more superb and has a terrific cinematic moment of bravery in the face of utter hopelessness. Without going beyond the personal time frame of his protagonists, Jordan gives the flavour of the Irish struggle and the depth of feeling in the people. Although the movie initially seems pro-IRA (one early car bombing caused someone in our audience to shout "Up the IRA."), Jordan paints today's IRA as the descendants, not of Collins' incisive hit squads, but of undisciplined and uncontrolled thugs who haven't the sense to put the gun down when political ends are won.

On the subject of Rickman as Baritone: On The Return of the Native tapes, he manages to get through several traditional folk songs (in English and French) without embarrassing himself. Of course, he does everything with wonderful vocal agility there (a frightened little boy, weeping and arguing women, the come-hither Eustacia Vye and an assortment of men, but no snakey villains). He doesn't attempt sound effects or animal noises, though. Thanks to the generous and community-spirited person who first informed us of the existence of this book-on-tape. Incidentally, I had to make a long and boring 12+ hour driving trip over the past weekend and kept my sanity by listening to a BBC Radio Drama (on tape) of Hamlet performed by Derek Jacobi, Kenneth Branagh, Sopie and Emma Thompson, et al. I'd be glad to look up the particulars of it for any Shakespeare fans who'd also like to buy it. Being read to by vocally talented people has to be one of the great pleasures in life.

In reference to *The Moon and Six Pence* It's loosey based on the book of the same name which is loosey based on the life of artist Paul Gaugon (sp) Does anyone want to help me out here? He will be co-starring with Emma (Love that Woman) Thompson and *It's Rafe, actually* Fiennes (gotta love those nicknames).Unfortunately, I started the book about a month back (to page 20 to be exact), but due to other commitments, I had to put it aside! It's set to be filmed in France, Germany, and some other tropical setting, Tahiti perhaps. I don't think Rickman has the starring role of the artist, Mr. Fiennes has dibbs on that. I'm just thrilled at the idea of seeing them both together again and top it off with Em! Regarding the hair. The light hair would be from bleaching in sunlight, it does happen and not necessarily evenly, that would account for the gray on the sides. I believe it's what's called a summer look. I think it's rather *cool*!

To Gina in Prospect, CT, for Return of the Native: Have your local library to a search of all the libraries in the area for that stuff. That's how I found a copy of Return of the Native to borrow. If you can get there, go to the Wilton Public Library, which is the only one in Fairfield County that has one. I was so in love with AR's voice, I invested in an unabridged set (it was $95! ouch) from Chivers. I also had ordered a copy of Blind Corner from Chivers, and just today I checked in on it. The people there said it would arrive to me next week (it's been on back order for a couple of months). So, both books on tape are available from Chivers if you want them. The Blind Corner book on tape is $55. Hope this helps! And for the life of me, I can't find the 800 number for he compn rih nw. They are located in Hampton, New Hampshire, so you could try calling directory assistance. Sorry about that!

Ladies, ladies! I think we're still a bit giddy over the awards night. I was so proud of our AR; my neighbors, however, were less than thrilled. I was screaming, my phone was ringing, my television was blaring... When we were all under control we thought about the Karina page and how it was probably exploding right then. I was right! Three asides: There is some website that offers autographed photos of AR for @$30. I don't know how reputable the company is, but it's a source. I found it by searching for "autographed photos"; they seem to concentrate on sports figures in these companies. Secondly, What is this "Spirit of Man" where AR is supposedly singing? Did I miss something? Where is the AOL site where the party was held? I have searched their crummy indexes and have never hit a room or a file dedicated to him. Clue me in!! TMD,

In "Sense & Sensibility" I couldn't figure out why Kate Winslett's character didn't turn into a quivering puddle of chocolate pudding the moment she laid eyes on Rickman's; oh, well! That's acting, I suppose! What do expect from the only woman on Earth who would've chosen Paul Henried over Bogey in "Casablanca"? I dearly hope this wonderous person sings; with pipes like his, it would be a crime else . . .

To Lisa in Ocala: Two audio cassette publishers, Chivers Audio Books and G.K. Hall Audio, released "Blind Corner" (date: 1986). There is no ISBN to be found. My local Barnes & Noble couldn't order a copy; they insisted it was out-of- print. My local library, however, was able to get a copy from another library: Guilford Public Library (CT). Make friends with the librarians in Ocala and see if they can do the same. They should be able to order from other states as well. Keep after them... it's worth it!

Hi, Last night we had a Rickman Emmy Celebration Party on America Online (AOL). (So you're thinking:"Why do we care? "We don't subscribe to AOL and the party's over anyway.") The reason that I mention it is that with the invatition I sent out a .JPEG collage of six Emmy pictures which I called the "Rickman Emmy Scrapbook". So if anyone would like a copy, email me and I will forward it to you ( I just love the shot of him with his mouth hanging open). Yours TMD, Ellen KelClancy@aol.com "Well, I'm dead chuffed too"

I was flipping channels and happen to catch AR on the E channel fashion review about the Emmy's. In case you missed it, it was hosted by Joan Rivers (who looks like she's had one too many face lifts!) She and her daughter Mellisa and two designers went through a play by play of the fashins at the Emmy's. Our boy AR was on a segment entitled "Guys who goofed". Joan thought that his tux looked stupid with no tie but everyone else thought his tux looked great. The only thing they did agree on was his hair. It was a little on the messy side. I only wish I could have heard what he was saying. You couldn't hear the audio portion of the interview. Oh well it was great to see him. 9/16/96

From Reuters this evening:Director And Actor Defend New IRA Film As Accurate By Paul Casciato TORONTO (Reuter) - Dublin-born director Neil Jordan defended on Friday his heroic portrayal of Irish nationalist Michael Collins in his new IRA movie starring Liam Neeson. ``I did see a heroic element to Collins that I wouldn't make any apologies for,'' Jordan told reporters at a press conference one day after its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Jordan shot down critics of the film who called it historically inaccurate and who said it perpetuated the mythical stature of Collins. ...Jordan and the film's producer, Stephen Woolley, said the movie was filmed entirely in Ireland and under the watchful eyes of people who are intimate with the people and the story. They said English actor Alan Ryckman (sic), who played Irish Preident Eamon Devalare in the movie had to act his first scene in front of thousands of spectators. ``His first performance on the film was reviewed the next in the Irish Times,'' Woolley said. ``Michael Collins'' won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival and captured the best actor trophy at Venice for Liam Neeson's protrayal. First of all, I saw Closet Land, Close My Eyes and An Awfully Big Adventure just recently. I was disappointed in the first because it was not romantic or sexual. I'm not really interested in seeing AR in a role that doesn't turn me on in that way. I also thought the movie said nothing about torture that Orwell's 1984 didn't say better. He was more charming in Close My Eyes: overflowing the dishwasher, sitting on the floor to tie his shoe like a little boy in the supermarket, personifiying the voice of reason at the end, but his part was too small. In Awfully Big the movie grounds itself emotionally when he makes his appearance; I think his scenes with Prunella Scales are even more sexy (more deeply emotional) than the bed scenes with the young girl. He reminded me a bit of Alan Bates. I won't give away the end, but it's heart rending . . . The second thing I wanted to do was convey some astrological information. AR has Sun, Mercury and Venus in Pisces. Here is Venus in Pisces, according to Grant Lewi, one of the older astrological gurus: "Your response to eomtional stimuli is a good deal deeper than you are able to get across to those you love. What you feel is difficult for you to express, and frequently you are misunderstood and imposed on because of this. Your muscles react to eomtional stimuli--your impulse is to do something for the loved one, to run errands give presents; and you get genuine joy from the giving." Another book says: "Loving, caring and unselfish, this placing gives sensitivty and compassion in relationship. The partner is everything, almost to the total denial of the self, and sometimes this can lead to escapist indulgence in sensuality, but always love is there." He's also got Moon in Scorpio: "Your emotions are intense. . . . You regard the senses as instruments of pleasure rather than knowledge, responding intensely and passionately to life and sex. Your ability to observe is unlimited." There are negative things, of course, but he seems to combine Pisces loving (watch him waking up Juliet Stevenson in Truly Madly and covering up Cates in Awfully Big) and Scorpio intensity ("Darling, what are you doing?" "Warming my lips.") I'll post more if people are interest. Meanwhile, I look forward to Mesmer and Michael Collins.

Amazed and delighted to find this site! Almost as amazed as when I found a very young Alan Rickman's incredible reading of Dornford Yates' mystery, "Blind Corner" at a local library. Twelve hours of that voice! I'm sure the novel must have been very suspenseful and riveting, but I have to admit that I was a bit too distracted by the reader's voice to have paid attention to plot or character development. I'll just have to hear it again! The recording was made roughly 15 years ago; surely the die-hard (and Die Hard) fans at this site have heard it already. (His bio on the case listed only Les Liasons and some television work.)I'd love to read some comments.

Since I was "dead chuffed" like all the rest of you,(it's great to have this guestbook to share our enthusiasm) I called HBO yesterday (I live in NYC so it was easy) and spoke to the home video folks. They and the HBO webmaster were thrilled to hear AR has a web site. (oh dear, I didn't give them the URL but they may find it) The anticipated release date of Rasputin to video dealers is OCTOBER 8, price not yet set. The week before the Emmys, AR was in Glasgow casting "Winter Guest". He certainly does fly around!

Well, I had a feeling the rest of my comments never made it out the other day, so here goes: while living in Virgina, as an ex-New Yorker born & raised I still get the Sunday NY Times - here's a blurb from last Sunday about his role in "Michael Colllins" - due out in October in U.S.: "Alan Rickman plays Eamon de Valera, Collins's canny ally turned vicious enemy." I suspect we'd all go nuts if he played a romantic lead, as in "Truly..." in a big, commercial release. But, please, let's see it! Also, as to the speculation about why he didn't mention Rima Horton in his Emmy acceptance speech: Please -- he was caught off guard as is & probably barely managed to say what he did. And, consciously or subconsciously, since he tries to keep his private life private, I don't think it means anything that he didn't mention her. (not that I wouldn't mind trading places, you understand.)

I've also seen a pic of Rima Horton and it certainly could have been her the other night. So she did her hair etc......that doesn't mean it was a different person! And I don't think she looked too young - it's marvellous what a bit of makeup and glamour can do! If you were with AR and were going with him to the Emmys, wouldn't you ditch your normal look?

I was so happy to see AR win that Emmy! I hate to say it, but I had forgotten that he had been nominated, so I nearly jumped out of my seat in surprise! I haven't seen Rasputin yet...but it is exactly the kind of role that he do so well. I don't think he could do any role half-hearted. I do have the (at least the part he's in) Emmy show on tape. I rolled over part of the show today, but I am saving his acceptance part forever! My biggest complaint about the show is that everyone is under such tight time constrants that you can't really enjoy the moment with the actors. They're too frantic trying to get the names out in 30 secs, let alone anything else. Perhaps, he wouldn't have talked any longer anyway, but it would have been nice he if he had the chance! I caught a few minutes of that new entertainment show "Access Hollywood" (by accident about 1am). They had an after Emmy party that AR attended, I didn't have the tape going so I missed a very quick shot of a smiling Rickman with his Emmy! I was hoping they would have interviewed him, but no luck! Well, Emmy today....Oscar tomorrow! TMD Tami

I only thought fast enough to hit the record button AFTER AR was on stage about to speak! So for those who wanted to have a transcription of the short, spontaneous, but well spoken acceptance HERE IT IS: "Mmm, Well, I-I"m dead chuffed too. Thank you Helen for that line. (Audience laughs and AR smiles and chuckles) I really wasn't expecting this. Ummm, thank you to everybody at HBO and David Kirkpatrick. Umm, I'm nowhere without a script so thank you so much Peter Pruce. Thank you Uli Edel for directing and tolerating me, and particular thanks to all the people of St. Petersburg and Budapest for tolerating the whole shabang. Thank you so much. So if that woman wasn't Rima Horton and he didn't thank her, that kind of begs the question: 'What's up with that?' Anyone know?

I first fell hard for Alan Rickman after seeing Truly, Madley, Deeply, & Sense & Sensibilility only sealed my fate. I have a confession to make! I was very surprised to see Mr. Rickman win the Emmy! Not because he doesn't deserve to or doesn't have the talent! We all know he does! Given how schizoid Hollywood and the film industry can be at times, who would have thought, they'd come their senses! Pass the party hats, cheese doodles, and the margaritta mix! Now maybe the Oscar folks will come their senses. One can only hope!

Well, now WE'RE all dead chuffed, too! He certainly wins the prize for Most Visibly Shocked. For those who missed this priceless moment, each of the five actors nominated for the Best Actor Award was singled out on camera in the audience as the presenters fiddled around with the envelope. AR had a rather bemused expression as he (and we) waited. When HIS name was announced, his face kept the same expression for several seconds, and then this look of complete surprise came over his face. He looked like he'd been struck. The cartoon balloon over his head would have read "My God, that's MY name!" For me the whole show would have been worth sitting through if only to see Helen Mirren win for Prime Suspect and deliver up such a gracious speech, but the AR award immediately on the heels of that is more than a girl can bear. He also gets points in my book for his acceptance speech (clearly unprepared) which thankfully did NOT include love and kisses to every person he has ever worked with, ever known, etc., etc. Did anyone act fast enough to transcribe his off the cuff remarks?

I am new to this web sight. I too thought that I was the only AR fan. I purposely watched the Emmy's last night in hopes of catching a glimpse of AR. He did indeed seem TOTALLY shocked by winning. As much as I enjoy his acting I think he is in need of a new "do". I was also surprised when he won that he did not kiss his "significant other". Only to find here that it wasn't her. Anyone have the scoop on her? Hopefully this award will inspire him to do more American t.v. and films.

I'm here in Dublin for a couple of weeks to do some work. There are numerous reports about 'Michael Collins' in the papers. Every day in fact. But, never a mention of Alan Rickman. The others: Jordan, Leeson (of course), Quin, Roberts,... get mentioned all the time. But they seem to forget our Alan. The closest they get is an analysis of de Valera, without mentioning Alan who plays him ! Frustrating! Another question: Does anyone in Britain or Ireland know if a review of the Emmy's (or interviews with the winners) will appear on TV here? On what channel? I really would like to watch Alan accepting his Emmy. For the next week, I've got access to cable TV here in college. Bye for now, Lisbeth

Rickman looked shocked, wore his tuxedo with distinction but the woman sitting next to him is NOT Rima Horton. I've seen her and she is in her 40's, very petite, only moderately attractive (IMHO) with a page boy bob rather like Diana Rigg. In fact, looks like Diana Rigg. The woman sitting next to Rickman at the Emmy's is much younger and the hair is all wrong; Rima's hair is very fine and straight. But what a treat to see him!

Copyright © 1996 The Associated Press VENICE, Italy (Sep 7, 1996 6:54 p.m. EDT) -- "Michael Collins," a film that stirred opposition in Britain for its depiction of the short, bloody life of an IRA founder, won the best picture award Saturday at the Venice Film Festival. Liam Neeson was named best actor for his performance in the film. Although "Collins" has yet to open in Britain, politicians have objected to it -- contending it would portray the Irish Republican Army with sympathy and possibly touch off more violence in Northern Ireland. Director Neil Jordan, a 46-year-old Dubliner previously acclaimed for "The Crying Game" and "Interview with the Vampire," defended the film's depiction of Collins as a complex figure capable of violence and peacemaking. Accepting the Golden Lion award, Jordan praised Warner Bros. for backing a film that "deals with difficult subjects and gives rise to arguments." Later, reporters asked if he thought the movie would help peace efforts. Jordan replied, "I made it with this hope in mind, because of the history of my country." Collins led the IRA against the British, taking part in the 1916 Easter Rebellion. In 1921, he signed the treaty dividing the island between an independent south and British-controlled north. Extremists outraged by his support of the treaty assassinated him. Aidan Quinn, who portrays Collins' best friend in the film, accepted the best actor award on behalf of Neeson. The Irish actor, acclaimed for his role in "Schindler's List," is being treated in nearby Padua for an intestinal blockage.

Mr. Allen Rickman, I have been a fan of yours for a long time, and was wondering if you ever plan to take a trip to Vancouver,BC. It's a really nice place to visit and I'm sure you might like it. I think (along with others) that you are a GREAT actor and I would like to see you in more films. Keep doing what you do best. Your beloved fan, Bella Drygeese.

Hello! :) I remember reading, way back when Prince of Thieves first hit theatres, that Alan had turned down the Sheriff's part; I'm not sure who the second choice was but he backed out, and alan was approached again. He finally said yes, because he thought it would be a movie his two nieces culd go see. Did anyone else read that? It was in some kind of Robin Hood movie-accompanying magazine.

To Lisa from Boston: Thank you for the tip on the Barchester Chronicles! I am breathlessly awaiting my copy, which I purchased a mere 12 hours after reading your post. (A girl does need to sleep!) To Kristina from Hermosa Beach! Hi I live in California, and was also enthralled by that particular scene in A.B.A. I was kind of thinking, Boy she got lucky her first time! To everyone else. Keep up the good postings. I am so glad that we all help each other out on out mutual interest: Alan Rickman. See you all soon. Andrea

So ther I was, in a doctor's waiting room passing the time reading W (you know, the big glossy Women's Wear Daily monthly). The featured article in the Sept. issue was "London Booms.' It states that London is hotter than hot, hot, hot and THE IN neighborhood where everyone who is anyone is going is Notting Hill Gate. Celebs and would be celebs are flocking to buy. If I'm not mistaken, certain articles so kindly put on this site by Karina have a certain AR revealing (back when he did that; he learned) that HE has lived in NHG for years! Before it was Oh so trendy (what was the quote? "I still go to Portobello for the veg") Better watch out, Alan. Johnny Depp & Kate Moss have just bought a place. There goes the neighborhood!

I think I'm over my snit about the Maureen Paton unauthorized biography. I jumped to the conclusion that any bio written without his express permission and co-operation would necessarily by shallow and silly. I also came across a reference to AR in an unexpected place, a book called *The Motion Picture Prescription: 200 Movies to Help You Heal Life's Problems* by Gary Solomon (Aslan Publishing of Santa Rosa, California, 1995). It includes Closet Land (partially underwritten by Amnesty International, apparently) as a vehicle for facing a history physical and/or psychological abuse. The author says of it "Without a question of a doubt, Closet Land is the most emotionally difficult movie I have ever watched, bar none." And with that ringing endorsement, I plan to leave it to gather dust on the video store's shelf forever. The book does not include Truly, Madly, Deeply, which I would have thought was a pretty obvious candidate. So now we can justify our infatuation for Alan Rickman on the grounds that it's therapeutic!

Yureka! Finally found a place to deposit all my lust/admiration for AR. I hate to be crude, BUT: the scene where AR "deflowers" G. Cates in "An Awfully Big.." left me BREATHLESS! I had to watch it over and over...and deal w/my envy. AR is talented, sensual, and obviously comfortable in his skin...which is REALLY sexy. Any AR fans in California. I'd love to chat with you. I guess we're not crazy after all...

ACK! I can't believe I paid $45.99 for Barchester including a transfer from Laughinghouse Video! Was it done in SP mode on two tapes?? Mine was, and I thought it was a good buy, but I am sorely wrong. I feel so cheated! Hey, guys, go to Best if that one gives you the better price.

Regarding the Barchester Chronicles: I bought an authorized transfer from Best Video (1-800-RAREVID) several months ago for $29.95. This saves you the hassle of converting the tape yourself (and is considerably cheaper). Considering that the series is 6 hours long and AR is featured in a substantial portion of it, the video is certainly worth the price!

Hi! I've been reading and downloading your wonderful posts for the past few months and loved them all! I've learned so much and have found some incredible things from your leads! Thank you! Now it's my turn to try to help. It goes without saying I love Alan, have since Robin Hood though I took a long break. When you don't see much on an actor and other things in your dull life get in the way, you sort of lose touch with those wonderful people. I got back on the wagon with Rasputin and caught up in a flash! Now it's my turn to see if I can help. I think the movie company that released TMD is closing out the laserdisc. Seems like they're popping up on clearance racks in several areas. I grabbed the few that I could from one store in case any of you need one. It's $19.99 (plus tax and shipping). I also don't know if there are NTSC and PAL discs or if it doesn't make a difference, so those of you who are overseas on PAL, do your research first. If anyone is interested, please e-mail me soon. I am also happy to do trades! Again, it's great being on the boards and being with you all. Gives me the warm fuzzies that we share interest in such a talented man!

I think I will hold off on any critique of the unauthorized bio until I read it. Actually, the unauthorized bio's are often far more interesting; it's the authorized ones that are usually sugar coated, PR pieces. The writer is a very well known and respected theatre critique; I have pieces of her's on Jacobi and Jeremy Brett which were perceptive and very well written.

He's great... a man who knows his own mind and what he wants..yet shows a great sensitivity to those around him. Great actor who doesn't act like he's acting. He's the right age, too.... if he ever becomes "single"... I'd be interested. Intelligent and sensitive men with a sense of humor are hard to find.

*UNauthorized* biography? Uh oh...this is sure to fuel Alan Rickman's contempt for journalists, but I guess it's the price he pays for a blossoming career. I for one can't imagine it will include a critical analysis of his political outlook or a discussion of his professed commitment to feminism. If this Maureen Paton argues that he has tried to hide his non-U background (in spite of his many comments about his working class origins we've seen here from a variety of print media), one wonders what else she'll distort. I hope he's got entertainment lawyers ready to pounce.

Now if the publisher of this aforementioned biography wants to see the books fly out of the warehouse, they should drop a brief how-to-order message here. And if they don't, someone in Alan Rickman's retinue should. SURELY there is someone on his agency's staff who has been listening in on this continuing conversation for the past few months!

Great news about the bio of AR - I was hoping that somebody in the UK would write a book on him. However, I didn't think his lower working class background was or is particularly secret; it's been mentioned in several articles and interviews. What I hope she goes into is the mystery of his relationships. And - I have a JPEG of AR as Michael Collins; e-mail me if you want a copy since I know that Karina is swamped with work.

Are all Rickmaniacs reading this seated? If not, please do. From Aug. 24's Independent: "That most private of actors, Alan Rickman, will be stripped of a little of that privacy in the first BIOGRAPHY of him, written by theatre critic Maureen Paton and published in OCTOBER. It will claim that Ricman has carefully shielded his working class background from the media. He was a scholarship boy from a West London council estate and went to Latymer School where he was taught by Colin Turner who also nurtured Hugh Grant. Rather unromantically the book also reveals that Rickman's sensual drawl is in fact caused by a speech defect. Who wouldn't kill for such a defect?" There are also many reviews out about the Venice Film fest and AR is getting super notices for his De Valera. It will premiere in Toronto on Thursday nite, Sept. 12. Now to figure out how to get a copy of the bio the minute it is off the press!

Hi all,
Sorry it's been so long since I've done anything. My kids have gotten old enough that there littlesocial lives are taking over my free time at an alarming rate. Anyhow, today was the first day of school so I get a portion of my life back.

Today I rest, but over the next week I will be updating all my web pages (well, maybe over the next 2 weeks, I've acquire many web pages). I will be catching up on my pictures, reviews (poor Nancy has been waiting so patiently for all that stuff she sent me to show up). I will also break this guestbook up into more manageable chunks (actually, that will probably be the first thing I do).

Sleep Deprived Director - Dublin-born director Neil Jordan says he never lost more sleep over a film than ``Michael Collins,'' his epic about the IRA which had its premiere Saturday at the Venice Film Festival. The film, starring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts, recounts the life of the IRA director of intelligence who fought for Irish independence from 1919 to 1921. Some politicians say they fear it will fan sectarian tensions in British-ruled Northern Ireland. Jordan defends his decision to make the film, saying it was ``more about history than any political statement.'' Jordan's 1992 film ``The Crying Game'' also came under fire for what was perceived as a sympathetic portrayal of the IRA.
